"PLC provides us all with the opportunity to create and follow whatever path we choose."

"PLC provides us all with the opportunity to create and follow whatever path we choose."

Thefamouswriter and feminist Louisa May Alcott once said, "Far away there in the sunshine are my highest aspirations. I may not reach them, but I can look up and see their beauty, believe in them, and try to follow where they lead". These words inspired the theme for this year's Kookaburra: 'imagination'. Imagination is about having a goal or a dream and then developing the skills and having the passion to make it happen. PLC provides us all with the opportunity to create and follow whatever path we imagine.
We wanted this Kookaburra to be a reflection of the multiple areas that PLC girls strive and succeed in, both in and out of everyday school life. Through the pictures and reports from members of the PLC community and Student Council, each aspect of the journey of PLC is displayed within these pages.
The cover of this Kookaburra encompasses the idea of leaving but remembering what has passed and using it to make good decisions in the future. While all of us may not be worldclass athletes or scholars, we can each achieve in our own way. Whether success first reaches us within or beyond the boundaries of PLC, the School provides us with skills to flourish in whatever field interests us. While leaving another year behind can be a daunting thing, it is important to appreciate what we have gained and what we can still hope and aim for in the time ahead We wish all Year 12s leaving PLC the best of luck for future studies and life paths, trusting that you will remember the years we have spent here at PLC.
At Founders' Day this year, it struck me the number of Old Collegians who still come back, some thirty to sixty years later, to recall the origins of PLC and their time here. To me, this speaks of the importance of remembering PLC whilst also striving in whatever circumstances we may find ourselves.
Imagination is a powerful thing. It drives us to our goals and allows us to experiment in areas that may not have occurred to us before. Albert Einstein said, "Imagination is more important than knowledge. For while knowledge defines all we currently know and understand, imagination points to all we might yet discover and create". Have the vision to use what you know and do something special with it.

Early this year I attended a leadership course in Singapore, having chosen Singapore over Melbourne because it seemed to offer the opportunity to learn alongside leaders from the Asian region rather than perhaps being confined to leaders from within Australia. My decision was justified as I joined a group representing Thailand, Malaysia, China, Singapore, India, Indonesia, United States, Netherlands and one fellow Australian.
English was the common language although it took me several days to 'tune into' the various accents and pronunciations of my mother tongue. Imagine my surprise when familiarity and friendship allowed the group to share that it took them several days to 'tune into' my version of the English language! As always I was humbled by the fact that I was the only mono-linguist in the group. This conversation prompted what I call a 'light-bulb moment'. What was an unusual situation for me was perhaps a taster of what the world of work and friendship is, and will continue to be, for the current and future generations of PLC students - international, multi-lingual and multi-cultural.
I was challenged to consider what opportunities the School offers PLC students to truly experience collaboration, learning and friendship with a range of different cultures and languages, especially those of the Asian region. I do not mean being a tourist in a foreign country for that does not necessarily lead to understanding another culture in a meaningful way.
Dr Merry Merryfield in The Importance of a Global Education interview claims that a "monocultural, monolingual school is one of the most difficult places to teach global perspectives." Such is the challenge for us at PLC! However, introducing the International Baccalaureate curriculum was a significant step in ensuring that what we teach is representative of other cultures in content as well
as being academically rigorous in an international arena. At present we are planning for the introduction of the Diploma course for Years 11 and 12 to be offered from 2011 onwards - our current Year 9s will be the first to have the option of choosing this pathway. IB has offered our teaching staff professional learning experiences within the Asia-Pacific region where they are working, planning and relating with educators from around the globe. IB has also made us more aware of the literature and information available within our Library Resource Centre and the past five yea rs has seen a growth in literature from cultures other than our European and Australian origins. Entering into the IB world has also highlighted the number of students in our School for whom English is a second language and, where possible, we have encouraged and supported the maintenance of literacy in their mother tongue.
A number of School tours now offer an opportunity to understand cultures, to learn about their historical and political context and to share in a venture with their people. The tour to Cambodia is one example. Our second group of girls and parents travelled to this destination in July to meet villagers for whom they had raised funds to build houses through the Tabitha Foundation. A group of Year 10 Drama students also travelled to Dubai in March to partake in an ISTA (International School Theatre Association) Festival alongside students from schools as far flung as Russia, Oman, Zambia, South Africa, China and Turkey. In March 2010, PLC will host an ISTA Festival for over 100 international school students and teachers.
This year also saw PLC host 15 Year 8 students from Beijing Huijia Private School for seven weeks of second term. The girls spent half the school day in English as a Second Language classes and the other half immersed in PLCsubjects with their Year 8 buddies. It was a wonderful opportunity for the
students from China to experience an Australian education, learn a language and forge friendships. Likewise it provided a window for our girls into a different culture, particularly an Asian culture. The latter is important as Australia will increasingly conduct its business in the languages of the big Asian powers and possibly be shaped by their mind-sets and preferences.
PLC continues to welcome exchange students while building reciprocal opportunities for our own students. This year we have had Year 10 students spend time with host families in South Africa, Japan and Austria. We have welcomed students from Germany, Austria, Japan, United Kingdom, China and France.
Technology also offers the opportunity not only to learn about the world but also to interact with it. 2009 marked the launch of a PLC Scotch College presence on iTunes U that provides access to information and our learning environment anywhere anytime. We are trail-blazers in being the first independent schools in the world to deliver content through iTunes!
However, there is no substitute for authentic learning and this year Liana Tay, Student Overseas Representative, has been exceptional in building familiarity with Asian cultures into the school experience with events such as the Diversity Party, celebrations for Chinese New Year and food festivals.
I thank our Head Prefect for 2009, Madeleine Watts, for role modelling and also reminding us of the commonalities all humans share including the need for community, compassion, kindness and dignity. Such traits will always support our endeavours to understand perspectives of people of different backgrounds in different world regions.
BETH BLACKWOOD PRINCIPAL

In her final 'Reflections' in our PLC Links newsletter Rev Elke said that during her time at PLC she had tried to create space for reflection and stillness within the community. This, she said, was quite difficult in such a busy school where goals in teaching and learning are achieved through diligence and hard work. It is not until we stop and take the time to reflect on the year that we realise how true this is.
It is hard to believe that we have reached the end of another school year, and for the Year 12s, the end of our high school life. It would be an understatement to say that the year has been busy. Every minute of every day has been action packed, whether with 5.30 am rowing training, pipe band practice, lunchtime Service Team meetings or school play rehearsals.
The importance of trying absolutely everything that PLC has to offer helped us to choose our motto for the year, 'Alohomora', the spell from Harry Potter that opens doors. This year 'Alohomora' has served to remind us to ta ke adva ntage of the ma ny opportunities waiting behind every door here at PLC and to continue to open the doors of our hearts to both the PLC and wider community.
When looking back over the year we can see that so many girls and staff have integrated this theme throughout the various aspects of PLC life; I will always have fond memories of Jesus blessing us with his presence at the 2008 Year 12 farewell (thanks Mr Leach !), the magical Year 12 ball, Olivia Gamble performing ballet in a pink tutu, Mr Mac wearing a Dockers hat for the day and Mr Anderson ghosting! ! ! Also fondly remembered, the Harry Potter puppet pals, our very own Hannah Vermeersch, a world champion rower, and Lady GaGa's live performance at the student assembly.
Something immeasurable felt within our
that is but strong Iy community is
the opening up of our hearts. This is evident in the numerous community service projects, in which we have all participated throughout the year, and filters down to the individual small random acts of kindness that can be seen every day. These can be as simple as helping a student from a younger year with their homework or waving to a PLC girl as they walk down the street. This year 'Alohomora' has made us more aware of the importance of opening up our hearts to those who need it most.
I would like to express our gratitude to Ms Blackwood for her wise counsel and example to all of us. Of course, this year could not have been the same without the enthusiasm and hard work of our staff and teachers. Thank you to Mrs Flint for her never-ending support and guidance, and to Ms Dorrington and Mr Yates for all their advice and encouragement as Year 12 Coordinators.
A very big thank you also to Ashleigh McCloskey and the Student Council for their leadership, energy and ideas. We achieved many things together this year, from the introduction of House recess to some great student assemblies. One thing I am certain will not fade from our memories is the awesome win against Scotch College in the annual netball game -a first ever!
To those of you whose PLC journey continues in 2010, the Year 12s will miss your smiling faces and we wish everyone the best of luck for the remainder of your school years, in particular to Kimberley Benjamin, Head Prefect for 2010; we know you will do a fa ntastic job!
Most importantly, thank you and farewell to all the amazing Year 12 girls who helped to make our final year so successful, memorable and so much fun. We will miss each other in the years to come but hopefully the following colourful pages of our 2009 Kookaburra will preserve a little something from each other to cherish.
As our time at PLC comes to an end, a new and exciting journey begins. Good luck on whichever road you decide to travel, and wherever it may lead. Whether it is continuing your academic pursuits, training on the sporting field or enjoying the sunshine on the beach at Cottesloe, I hope you take every opportunity possible by trying every door. So throw off your panamas and let the wind that rustles th roug h the PLC pi ne tree carry you on to your next destination.
Thank you for an incredible year.
MADELEINE WADS HEAD PREFECT

"Being socially connected and involved in meaningful activity is a fundamental need of all people."
(UnitingCare West)
PLC's service focus for 2009 invited us to actively contribute to people living with disabilities, through our partnership with UnitingCare West. On our free dress days - one of my personal favourites - we have dressed in alternative, fun and interesting outfits and it is on these days that it is clear that the students are always keen to be involved in service.
Over the past year PLC girls have taken on over one hundred fundraising projects, extending from the Cambodia tour to lunchtime cake stalls. Through the service appeals each term, we have donated books, care packs, blankets, food and Christmas gifts for many marginalised groups across Perth. The interest in service in the PLC community has quickly become a fundamental part of PLC life and I feel honoured to have congratulated many students for their efforts with Service Leadership Awards over the year.
One of the key areas of focus this year has been the PLC Service Teams: Amnesty, Environment, Reconciliation and Overseas, and 2009 saw the inaugural 'Make A Difference (MAD) Week'. Student and staff awareness about many issues was raised with the opportunity to listen to various guest speakers. Together, we see great potential for this week in the future.
Thank you to Rev Elke, Ms Bahen and the PLC community, for your time and assistance in our various projects, including Bandanna Pancake the athletics sausage sizzle, the 40-Hour Famine and HTG and lunchtime activities. Sharing with you my passion for helping the global community and to have encouraged your service projects has been an absolute blessing. This is truly a community of which I am proud to be a part.
Congratulations to the 2010 Service Captain Georgia Westbrook.
"I was taught to consider the person before I notice the disability that they have a need for others to show interest and care that they love laughs and games and chats it has taught me not to judge by what I first see that we are all people with hearts and feelings that we all share the same human spirit about the need for belonging."
- Year 11 Student
KIMBERLEY BRYANT SERVICE CAPTAIN
In last year's Kookaburra, the 2008 Deputy Head Prefect, Calypso Haggett, wrote a message to me that in part said, "the more you put in, the more you get out". In terms of energy, this reminded me of ads I had heard for the breakfast cereal Nutri-Grain so I tried to figure out which breakfast cereal would best represent the 2009 prefecture. I decided it had to be 'Cheerios' - cheery, colourful wholegrain loops. Like Cheerios, this student prefecture was cheery, often a bit 'Ioopy' and certainly 'colourful', especially with such an array of personalities and opinions. However, it was our differences that allowed us to undertake so many exciting and challenging tasks with determination and humour. I have never worked with such an enthusiastic and energetic group of people in my entire life; so cheery that they could brighten your day and give you the energy to face any challenge.
Our motto, 'Alohomora', reflects not only the Harry Potter craze of our generation, but also the notion that magic need not be cliche or unrealistic. We sought to promote virtues of compassion, perseverance and community in every girl's pursuit of excellence.
I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished this year and I believe this is partly a result of the direct involvement of our Year 12 peers in our many tasks. Beginning with a farewell to the 2008 leavers, including a dance routine and a special appearance from 'Jesus Christ' (Mr Leach), we then put on a thoroughly entertaining student assembly, still following the theme of 'magic' with plenty of strong messages and hilarity. Our triumph over the Scotch prefects in a competitive netball game solidifies the belief that there is something about the '09 leavers that is truly magical.
I have learned that PLC is the perfect environment in which to challenge oneself because there is something to be gained from every experience. Thank you to Mrs Flint, Mr Yates and Ms Dorrington for their support

and guidance this past year and a special thank you to Maddie Watts for her unrelenting hard work and optimism.
To the 2010 Deputy Head Prefect, Phoebe Carre; for a while I felt like I was being replaced by a shinier model but I have realised that there is great beauty in this.
I hope we as a student prefecture have inspired you to seek out those locked doors with determination and homemade paper wands.
ASH LEIGH MCCLOSKEY DEPUTY HEAD PREFECT

At PLC we are privileged to be part of such a diverse and multicultural environment and, as overseas representative, I have had the opportunity of working with the international students to increase awareness and appreciation of the beliefs and values of other cultures.
This year, PLC's appreciation for diversity has been reflected by the many activities in which our students participated, such as our inaugural Harmony Week celebrations. Harmony Week commenced with food stalls during long lunch when a variety of dim sums, patisseries and cakes from all around the world were sold. The food proved popular with both students and staff, especially Mr Anderson, who came back for several helpings of barbeque pork buns!
The celebrations continued on the Friday with a lion dance performance during assembly, including a routine performed amongst the crowd of screaming girls and the traditional ritual of the scattering of lettuce symbolising good luck and fortune. During lunch time there was a cake stall run by the service team, singing performances and a combined Middle and Senior School Greek dance that has recently become part of the Harmony Day celebrations.
The 2009 Diversity Party marked the end of Harmony Week celebrations and was a night offun with Eurovision songs, a buffet of international cuisine, and friendly competition between the girls and even the staff. The quizzes, dance-off and performances revealed hidden talents within the PLC community, particularly in Rev Elke, who made her rapping debut as 'Rev-E', entertaining
us with a multilingual rap that was so popular that she even made an encore performance at assembly. From this reception, it would be fair to say that the spirit of Harmony Week was truly conveyed through the enthusiasm for all events!
I would like to thank Ms Lukin, the staff and students for all their support and friendliness, which truly contributed to my enjoyment of my role as overseas representative. Next year, our Overseas Student Representative will be a School official position and will be working as part of the Service Team to enrich the PLC community. I wish our next overseas representative Amelia Spackman the best for 2010 and say for now; sayonara, au revoir, zai jian, selamat tinggal, arrivederci, farewell.

the same length as the outgoing Year 12 subjects. This allowed the school to teach courses in the first three terms of Year 11, and then allocate almost four terms to studying courses in Year 12. This change also brought forward the second semester examinations to October. This significant increase in time will better prepare the girls for the university entrance requirements that are based only on the Year 12 results.
The lives of students outside of school involve major digital components, often downloading music from the Apple iTunes store. During Term 4 PLC (with Scotch College as a partner) was one of the first Schools in Australia to be featured on the iTunes U site worldwide. iTunes U provides a means of distributing academic material to people around the 12 world and is used by Universities such as Harvard, Cambridge, and UWA.
PLC has been using iTunes U to deliver course materials to the girls. Staff prepare podcasts of relevant parts of a lesson and then upload them to the Apple site. The girls then download the relevant podcasts into iTunes, often automatically every time they open their computer. This process means that girls can often receive the pod cast the same evening it was produced.
Girls in Year 11 and 12 also received their iPod touch late in Term 4. This access device provides another option for viewing and listening to school podcasts and curriculum materials. Having a highly portable device has enabled the girls to further experience school as part of their normal digital life.

The lives of students outside of school involve major digital cOluponents., often downloading music from the Apple iTunes store.

As the girls were enjoying their last few weeks of summer holidays, I journeyed to Geelong Grammar School to attend a sixday 'Positive Education' course. This proved to be an empowering and enlightening week, with long lasting impact and relevance to girls across PLC.
Not surprisingly then, the Middle School has had a focus on positiveness and on optimistic thinking in particular. To this end, across Middle and Senior School, we began our 'Three Blessings' project. This involved each girl and staff members, noticing three wonderful things each day, noting how these things make them feel and why they are important to them. Sharing what is good can help to emphasise the positive feeling and in Tutor Group, girls had the opportunity to share their blessings, doubling the positive emotion! We also created 'awe walls' with girls bringing in images, sayings, news clippings, poems and so on that inspire a sense of awe and wonderment, in order to foster positiveness.
I thoug ht it fitti ng to ask the girls to reflect on their three blessings for 2009 and I was truly blessed to know that they had difficulty confining their blessings to just three!! What they came up with were three categories of blessings, which I have pleasure in sharing with you.
Our Three Blessings (as told to Mrs Sharon Anderson)
Blessing 1-a stable 'launch pad'
We have many people in the School who provide us with the stability and security we need. Mrs Rodoreda, our Middle School Counsellor has lots of strategies for us to use to help us through tricky times and lollies for when we visit! Our Year Coordinators, Ms Anderson, Mr Green and Ms Fitzpatrick, are the people who keep us organised and looked after. Finally, we have Mrs Scott, the friendly face at the front desk who knows everything there is to know! We know that we feel cared for - and that is a real blessing!
There are so many opportunities that PLC gives us; one is the opportunity to make friends. In Year 8 it was great to be mixed up in classes with girls we didn't know before, because that gave us the opportu n ity to make more friends. We have the opportunity to learn from lots of different teachers and to learn new things. The Arts, and Technology and Enterprise give us opportu n ities to experience subjects we have never done before and to learn and apply new skills. Interschool sports allow us the opportunity to make new friends with our teammates and girls from other schools, to try new sports and to be a part of the PLC community - and to have fun doing it! We have the opportunity to meet people from overseas - such as our Chinese friends from Huijia International School in Term 3, to go on camps and excursions and for lots of the Year 9s, to go to Canberra and the snow. We have opportunities to make a difference by being involved in Community and Service - making cakes, knitting squares and even dressing up on free dress days to raise funds and awareness of other people and situations that need our help. Some of us have the opportunity to be involved in Speech Night preparations and to be a part of the evening itself. We are blessed by the opportunity to listen to guest speakers at assemblies who share their inspiring stories with us, and to be entertained by our Year 12s at their student assemblies. Last but not least, we have the opportunity to wear the best school uniform in Perth!
Having choices helps us to prepare for our future, which will be full of choice l We have the choice to do one or two Language Bs. We have choices that come after experiencing all the fantastic subjects, like textiles, computing, music and drama; which one should I continue or should I try something new?
We have lots of great places to sit and have our lunch and that involves choices. We don't HAVE to sit in anyone space - the choice is ours. We have the choice to be involved in the co-curricular programme; which musical instrument will I learn, which sport shall I play, shall I do debating or shall I learn to row? So many choices that make me a better person.
Being at PLC makes me feel lucky, glad and special. I just love being here!
As Charles Dickens once said, "Reflect upon your present blessings, of which every man has plenty; not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some."
I was gratified to know that our girls do feel blessed to be at PLC - blessed because of the stability that the staff provide, blessed because of the opportunities available and blessed because of the variety of choices they have. For me, one of the biggest blessings for 2009 was knowing and working with the girls themselves!
SHARON ANDERSON HEAD OF MIDDLE SCHOOL

it is an opportunity for the two schools to socialise. Ms Watts did a wonderful job in her first year as a Year coordinator organising all the details. The Year lOs survived their camps and confronted their fears of heights, dirt and bugs. It was also the first year the girls in Year 10 were able to participate in the Internationa I Schools Theatre Association Festival in Dubai, where they met students from all around the world.
None of the social events would be possible without the wonderful support of our parent body so remember to also volunteer when you are older, girls. I always feel that the entire PLC community gives in many ways and the gift of time is the most precious of all so thank you to all parents who helped at all our events this year. You are a blessing!
40 The Senior School girls have enjoyed the many opportunities the School has provided in the Cambodia tour, Relay for Life, the Personal Project, the Kate Reilly cake stall, the many opportunities to contribute to Service Learning, wonderful dance showcases and the school play, The Bald Prima Donna, just to name a few.
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." Margaret Mead

with many amazing tackles and interesting kicks that led the team to the semi-finals. With our great team effort and talent we had the honou rof playi ng thecurtain-ra iser for a Fremantle Dockers game at Subiaco oval. Congratulations to Kimberley Benjamin (Year 11) and Grace Dempster (Year 11) who were chosen as WA All Stars. It was great to see Grace go on to represent the state. Thank you to our coaches Mr Mac and Mr Jones for your patience with the team and passion for the game.
The fabulous Year 8s, 9s and 1Os are always getting involved in the Boarding House. They raid the dress-up box to find the greatest, most hideous outfit to wear to a social and can be relied on to have a cheeky, cheerful smile on their faces. To the Year 11 s of 2009, you have a busy and exciting year ahead and we all wish you luck.
Thank you Mr and Mrs Mac, Ms Robey and Mr Eddy, for everything you do for us. We appreciate the laughs we have together and all the activities that you make possible. When the 'sock murder game' begins, the whole Boarding House is alert and plans of attack are made. Screams are constantly heard, but sadly the game always comes down to one last boarder. To all mistresses, we thank you for your friendship and putting up with our messy convo.
To the Year 12s, we have created many great memories together and I hope you all have lots of adventures and fun next year. A big hug to the prefects who have supported and worked with me over the year, I love your positive attitude. To every boarder, remember the dress-ups, the sneaking from room to room (past lights out), the socials, outings and all the special moments spent together. Congratulations to Hannah Tunstill who has been appointed Senior Boarder for 2010. I'm sure that you will do an amazing job.

Mr Thomas for his hard work as Head of Music.
The exhibitions this year were fantastic, presenting the visual art of our students. The beginning of the year saw the introduction of the media exhibition, entitled 'When I Have a Camera in my Hand', and the photographs taken by students were extremely creative and eye catching. The Art Exhibition for this year was entitled 'Illumination' and was another fantastic exhibition by our visual arts students.
Now to the best day of the year, Arts Day, and this year was definitely unforgettable. Not only was it on my birthday, but also had my fabulous opening and the amazing staff dance, which sawall teachers (including those with no dance training) perform an amazing routine. Arts Day presented the diverse talents of so PLC girls in the performing and creative arts and was easily one of the best Arts Days because of the large amount of participation in all areas. The House choir competition was wonderful this year and congratulations go to Carmichael House for taking out first place. Well done also to Summers House for winning the overall Arts Day trophy.
Being Arts Captain this year was a dream come true for me. The talent and enthusiasm from all students really brought a smile to my face. A special thank you goes to Ms McKeever for all her help.
Congratulations to Tamsin McLinden, Arts Captain for 2010. I know you are going to be amazing, but just a little advice; don't be afraid to put on a variety of wigs and costumes - it always gets the crowd excited!

Eviscerated
The teacher didn't care that we had given up on percentages. She had other things slowly crucifying her mind.
She marched down the row of desks with Pine-a-Clean and tissues, starting at the spare desk on the end.
The spare desk had been stagnant and numb for a long time. A crane had dropped half a tonne of cement on the girl who used to sit there. I had watched her die.
She sprayed half a bottle of Pineo-Clean on the desk.
The smell was hospital-y, police station-y, like a reminder to call 000 in an emergency.
She went down the row of desks systematically: Spray, wipe. Spray, wipe. Equations, love hearts and stickfigure drawings melted away. Histories of past occupants vaporised.
She sanitised all the tables in the room until they were clean and innocent, Eviscerated.
I noticed the ring she always wore on her left hand was gone.

The beginning of the year saw the introduction of the Inedia exhibition" elltitled 'WIlen I Have
a
Call1era in Iny Hand"" and the photographs taI{.en by students were extrelllely creative and eye catching.

Fergo won and took out the A great sports captain you have shield found.

It is impossible to say how proud I am of everyone who was involved in PLC sport this year. Whenever and wherever there were PLC ath letes, there was sportsmanship and modesty, which is a tribute to our coaches and staff. Thank you to the PE staff who made it so much fun and easy to be sports captain this year. Congratulations also to our sports coordinators who led the Houses in a variety of events and whose organisation and commitment was outstanding.
I believe that the depth of our PLC sporting programme was shown by how many sportswomen we had competing at state and national levels this year. Special mention to Gabriella Robson (Year 12) (equestrian), Catherine van de Walt (Year 11) (athletics) and Malindi Haggett (Year 12) (fencing) who excelled in their sports at a national level.
May I also offer another commendation to Hannah Vermeersch (Year 12) who went to the Junior World Rowing Championships in France, winning gold for Australia in the Junior Women's Coxless Four. With the help of our sporting excellence programme Hannah managed to balance four TEE subjects and a hectic rowing schedule, which is a great example of what we all can achieve, especially at PLC.
Another big change this year has been to our sporting facilities both at PLC and at IGSSA. It all started with the inter-school swimming competition being moved to Challenge Stadium, which created a very different atmosphere from previous years and saw many records broken. Even more exciting was the move from Perry Lakes Stadium to the new WA Athletics Centre. This brand new location was exceptional and our girls were excited to race on the track where hopefully Usain Bolt will run next year. Amazingly, this new mondo track resulted in everyone stride being equivalent to 1.5 strides on the old track, and the girls certainly felt the benefit. I also had the privilege of playing on
the boarders football team, which was not only some of the most fun times I have had all year, but also gave me the opportunity to play on Subiaco Oval. Our team played in the curtain opener for the Fremantle Dockers and this was an experience many will never forget.
Well done again to Catherine van der Walt, Sports Captain for 2010. I am sure that she will be a great leader for you all and I wish her well in all her endeavours.
Jokes I told at assembly this year:
What sport do you have with jam and scones?
Tee-ball
What sport do the rolling stones play?
Marbles
What did the tennis ball say when it got hit? Who is making all the racquet What sport does Mt Everest play?
High jump
What sport do you play on a plane?
Cross-cou ntry
What is the difference between the Dockers and a football field?
The field has two goals
OLIVIA GAMBLE SPORTS CAPTAIN

May I also offer another comlnendation to Hannah Verlneersch (Year 12) who went to the Junior World Rowing
66 Championships in winning gold for Australia in the Junior Coxless Four.

This year the stadiums shook to the chant of the Baird girls: "Harder! Bairder! Faster! Stronger!" and, throughout the year, this is what we proved to be!
Swimming harder in the first event on the Inter-House calendar made a fun-filled day when all the new girls became part of our enthusiastic Baird team. Congratulations to Iso bel Payne (Year 7), Alexandria Hynes (Year 7), Alice Dormer (Year 10) and Georgia Rakich (Year 10) for their standout performances in swimming and diving.
Next on the agenda was public speaking and debating. Typically, Baird is bairder (better) in academic fields and this was proved again this year with Years 9, 11 and 12 making it to the debating finals. The Year 12 team won, while Elizabeth Alderson claimed Year 10 public speaking champion. Massive thanks to Jennifer Alderson for her efforts as Public Speaking and Debating Coordinator.
Our Performing Arts Coordinator, Eliza Kavanagh created an exceptionally witty team for the Inter-House theatre sports competition, while girls from all Year levels brought a little style to the stage with Beyonce inspired cheerleading.
Cross-country went by with a blur of orange as Baird girls ran faster than ever to place us an amazing third overall. Catherine van der Walt was Year 11 Champion Girl -a wonderful personal achievement.
At the athletics carnival the Baird spirit was not the least bit dampened by the bad weather as we pushed our limits, sprinting through the downpours and heaving the shot-put against the gales. Yet again, Catherine van der Walt was Baird's pride and glory breaking numerous records to win Year 11 Champion Girl, while Baird placed fourth overall. Thanks to our dedicated Sports Coordinators, Rachel Hoey and Katherine O'Mahony , for all their work at the swimming, cross-
country and athletics carnivals.
We were feeling stronger for Inter-House academics, as it always emerges as Baird's area of expertise. The brains of the House took to the floor with an average up in the 90s for most subjects. Baird held a strong lead until the final round, when we slipped to second place. However, we were over the moon with thisamazing feat as it was our highest placing for the year!!!
Arts Day lived up to its expectations and was a fantastic fun-filled day. There was sewing, baking, woodwork, dance, singing, music, photography and more, all topped off by the clash of the choirs. Congratulations and thanks to Georgina Carr for creating our choir and conducting ou r rend ition of Clocks by Cold play and the hymn You Are Mine.
Arts Day also saw the announcement of Baird's 2010 House Captain. Congratulations and good luck to Sophie Clapin, who I am sure will bring Baird to even greater heights next year!
CELIA THOMPSON BAIRD HOUSE CAPTAIN

We pushed our limits sprinting through the downpours and heaving the shot-put against the gales.

In 2009 the legendary Carmichael girls once again outdid themselves. Their commitment to doing their best and participating in anything and everything was astonishing.
Neverwastherea dull moment with the 'blue army' around, whether it was their thundering cheers of support in the sporting stands or the general sense of fun they exuded around the School. No matter the playing field, the swarm of girls in blue never failed to live up to the Carmichael motto 'Play The Game'. When asked to cheer, they cheered; when asked to scream they shook the stands!
The year got off to a flying start with the Inter-House swimming carnival, with girls throwing themselves wholeheartedly into the daunting Challenge Stadium pool. Every girl embraced the spirit of the day and their positive energy and sportsmanship was astounding. The day ended with a solid fourth place in Middle School and fabulous sixth place in Senior School. A thousand thanks to Brittany Cole and Emma Rogers, our Year 12 Sports Coordinators, for their incredible organisation and leadership on the day. The amazing number of participants and words of encouragement at this event epitomised what Carmichael House is essentially about.
An overall fifth place at the swimming carnival was notto deter the girls of the mighty Carmichael House when they were faced with their next sporting challenge, cross-country. The participation rates and the willingness of the girls to exert themselves physically and mentally on the intimidating 1.5 or 3 km ru ns deserved a standing ovation I The effort of the girls was rewarded with a first place in Middle School and fourth place in Senior School. We were on our way up!
The next major event on the calendar was the Inter-House athletics carnival. Blue paint was out in force and was our shield against the terrible weather' Our spirits were not dampened and the girls outdid themselves with yet another great team
performance. Brittany and Emma must once again be thanked for the tireless effort they put into organising and running our day with such fluidity.
The year came to a close with Arts Day, when Carmichael showed off its impressive creative prowess. Our House Arts Coordinator Matilda Sebire ensured that blue artwork, musical ensembles and dramatic monologues were spread allover the School and at the end of the day the sports centre was filled with the melodic 80s tunes of Jefferson Starship. Our House Choir Coordinator Isabella Woodhouse led Carmichael to a magnificent first place in this event!
House meetings every other week provided an opportunity for all the girls to bond and spend more time together. These meetings were a highlight for me and I looked forward to being able to share my sometimes terrible sense of humour and my hyper, often overly enthusiastic personality with this outstanding group of girls.
The entire Year 12 House Tutor Group, our tutor Ms Tholet and House Advisor Ms Robey, also deserve particular mention. Our Year 12 cohort has developed over five years into a marvellous 'bunch of gals' and I look forward to hearing of their contributions to society in the coming years.
PLC has been shaken by the thunderous screams of "C-A-R-MI-C-H-A-E-l:' this year. Carmichael House radiates amazing positive energy and, without everyone's individual support, the House (and me) would not be where we are at the end of this momentous year. You have brought immeasurable pleasure to my final year at PLC and I am forever grateful. I cannot begin to describe how proud I have been of each and every one of you. Well done this year, you have been fantastic; keep up the energy!
Congratulations to the 2010 Carmichael House Captain, Prue Batchelor.
EMIKO CARTER
CARMICHAEL HOUSE CAPTAIN
Although Fergo lllay not have gold., we still felt we won • •• In spIrIt., to the alllazing
atlllosphere the girls created.

For me, red symbolises passion, loyalty, love and motivation, and throughout this year Fergo ladies have continuously reflected this through their participation in all activities.
Ferguson got off to a flying start, with an epic last place in the Inter-House swimming carnival, but we did achieve this in style, with many individual high achievements on the day. Although Fergo may not have taken gold, we still felt we won in spirit, thanks to the amazing atmosphere the girls created.
Luckily the tables turned at the Inter-House cross-country, which once again proved to be our forte, with Fergo taking home first place for the fourth year in a row. Phenomenal talent and huge participation allowed Fergo to tear up the track and win our first event for the year.
When it came to Inter-House athletics, Ferguson once again brought out their roaring spirit, battling through the rather inconvenient weather. Be it running, jumping or eating lollies (provided by yours truly), the girls did it with true enthusiasm and their energy proved that nothing could rain on our parade. Even when it actually did rain and the highly anticipated marching competition was cancelled, we managed to pull through and were awarded third place for the carnival. Huge thanks go to Mary Bowman and Georgie Saggers who did a fantastic job coordinating the Fergo clan on these sporting occasions.
Fergo's array of talents did not stop at sports as girls continued to work their magic in arts and academics. The public speaking and debating competitions generated some fantastic results with outstanding achievements from the Year 11 debating team, winning for their Year group. Thank you to Jade Bates who, as Public Speaking and Debating Ccoordinator, ensured that these events ran smoothly.
Once again the theatre sports competition was a great night full of laughter. Fergo pulled out some priceless performances, and the cheerleaders produced the goods with our personalised version of 'Fergalicious', a crowd favourite on the night.
Inter-House academics ended Term 2, and although our intellectual skills were not as crisp as our cross-country, the event was a great way for girls from varying Year groups to work together and have a good laugh.
With the much anticipated Arts Day creeping up, it was time for the girls to get creative. Whether rehearsing a song, creating a masterpiece or baking a cake, Fergo ladies were determined to shine on Arts Day, and this is exactly what they did. Tremendous thanks go to Laura Humphry who took on the daunting task of coordinating and motivating everyone to sing their hearts out in a rendition of Life is a Rollercoaster by Ronan Keating. Thank you to Alexandra Charleston who successfully coordinated both Arts Day and theatre sports.
Tothe lovely ladies in Ferguson; there are no words to describe how grateful I am to have led you through this year. My thanks go to all of the Year 12 Fergo girls, to our House tutors, Mr and Mrs Williams, who have proven to be the most amazing group of people, and to the legend of the House, Mr Saunders. It is no surprise that we now resemble an exceptionally large family. Congratulations and good luck to the 2010 House Captain, Sarah Clapin.
Always remember, there are two types of people in the world: those in Fergo and those who wish they were! Peace and love!
SALLY SMIRK FERGUSON HOUSE CAPTAIN

McNeilians are well known for their fiery competitive spirit in all aspects of House life, and this year was certainly no exception. We dived headlong into the new school year, ready to tear up the track, cheer from the stands and power through the water.
For the first time in 2009, the yellow finery emerged as McNeilians packed the stands of Challenge Stadium for the InterHouse swimming and diving carnival. We swam with great enthusiasm, taking out the Senior School trophy and coming an impressive third place overall. Congratulations go to all our individual champions, of whom we are very proud.
Next on the House calendar was the much-anticipated comedy sports and what a fantastic night it turned out to be! The actors and cheerleaders gave us an entertaining sample of some of the artistic talent of the McNeilians. Big thanks to Zoe Cole who organised the teams, and gave us an amazing performance.
We had some brilliant public speakers and debaters this year. To all those involved, you did an awesome job. Special congratulations go to all those girls who made the final and to Jacinta Benetti, our public speaking and debating coordinator.
In Term 2 we had the InterHouse cross-country at Perry Lakes, an event that often attracts a lot of helpers rather than runners. But not this year! We had a record number of girls taking part! I applaud all those girls who gave it a go, whether they or danced their way over the line. Special congratulations to our speedy Ella Newton (Year 7) who turned in a stunning performance, winning the Middle School race against Year 8s and 9s.
The vibrant glow of yellow did not go unnoticed at the athletics carnival. It rained all day and was the coldest day of the year, but that was not enough to dampen our spirit. The girls
battled through the day, with amazingly high spirits and a sense of determination, and it all paid off, with McNeil achieving a clean sweep, winning all three trophies. Thanks to both Indianna Swanson and Isabella Stewart who coordinated all the sporting events this year; you could not have done a better job.
Our final event for the year was Arts Day, which went off with a bang! The McNeil girls lit up the stage in both the creative and performance sections. Special thanks to Zoe Cole- you did a wonderful job as arts coordinator, with everything running according to plan. The excitement of the day was topped off with a spectacular House choir performance of the hit Mercy led by our wonderful House choir coordinator Kara Joshi. It was great to see so many girls participating and getting into the House spirit.
The McNeil family would not have been the same ifit were not for our devoted parents and our tutors, in particular our Year 12 tutors Mrs Stewart, Mrs Saffen and Mr Yates. Thank you so much for your constant support and guidance throughout the year. Further thanks go to our House advisor Mr Hinchley, who has been at the heart of McNeil's spirit. Last, but not least, thank you to the wonderful McNeil Year 12s. It has been a pleasure to lead such a talented bunch of girls. I admire you all for the fantastic effort and enthusiasm you have displayed this year.
Congratulations to Sarah Cole, House Captain for 2010. I wish you all the best, and the 201 0 Year 12s. You have a fantastic year ahead of you - don't waste a minute of it.
MAUNDI HAGGETT
MCNEIL HOUSE CAPTAIN

Stewart has had a fantastic year in 2009 with the girls showing limitless enthusiasm when participating in the numerous Inter-House events. We had a great success at the first event of the year, the swimming carnival, placing second overall by a mere three points. This was an excellent example of the importance of getting involved in order to achieve success. Congratulations to Brittany Pethick (Year 9), Indiana Read (Year 10) and Jana Harvey (Year 8, diving) who were each awarded Champion Girl.
This year saw the introduction of 'off the cuff' comedy to the Inter-House events. Girls from all different Year levels were able to demonstrate their improvisational skills and their abilityto embarrass themselves to keep the audience amused. This was coupled with the entertaining chants concocted by the House cheer squads who kept the atmosphere lively and helped contribute to our overall third placing.
Although, our cross-country results were a little less pleasing, there were still lots of individual successes. We finished in sixth place overall but had some excellent runners, many placing within the top ten. These included Sophie Forrester (Year 10) who gained first place and Annabel Watts (Year 7) who was runnerup within her Year group.
Another successful event for Stewart House was the athletics carnival. Though the day itself was wet and miserable with rain, this did not dampen the House spirit. Girls ran, threw and jumped as best they could, given the conditions. The large participation led to another second place for the House. Among these were Jessica Pleydell-Bouverie (Year 10) and Hannah Vermeersch (Year 12) who were runner-up champion girl for their respective Year groups, as well as Eleanor Edwards who was our Year 12 Champion Girl.
Though only a small House event, the Inter-House rowing
regatta proved to be Stewart's most successful. With only six girls participating, we managed first place, a fantastic achievement for those involved.
Public speaking and debating were run throughout the year, allowing girls to showcase their opinions and wit in entertaining speeches and debates. None of our teams made the finals in debating, but Phoebe Carre (Year 11) gained a first place in public speaking.
Over three afternoons in the last week of Term 2, girls were able to exhibit their brainpower in the subjects of mathematics, science and humanities that made up the Inter-House academic competition. Everyone pulled out their calculators to puzzle over the various questions and the Stewart team efforts resulted in an overall fourth placing.
Arts Day was a huge success, with hundreds of entries in each of the categories, ranging from beautiful artworks to gifted performances. Everyone participated and joined in the spirit of the day, which ended with the traditional House choir competition.
A big thank you to Mr Greg Jones, our House Adviser, and Mr Keith Neale, our Year 12 House Tutor, of whose support I am extremely appreciative. Their encouragement, along with that of the House coordinators and the rest of Stewart has led to the success of the House this year.
I wish all the best to Madelyn Milne in her endeavours as Stewart House Captain for 2010.
TESSA DEMPSTER
STEWART HOUSE CAPTAIN 91

'Aim High' is the Summers motto and in 2009 the Summers girls continued to strive for their very best. There were some great moments of wins and losses, but no matter what, everyone was always having a go.
In the Inter-House swimming carnival, purple caps popped up out of the swimming pool all day long. Whether in diving, novelty relays or single events, everyone gave their best effort. Summers did extraordinarily well taking home the first place trophy, as well as the diving and Middle School trophies; it was hard for me to hold them all! Well done to Year 7 champion girl Lucy Jenkins and Year 11 champion girl Anna Williams, who both showed their true Summers' spirit.
We ended Term 1 by taking out first place for comedy sports, which was a great night with lots of laughter and giggles. Artistic talents shone through, as competitors improvised their hearts out. Thank you to all of the girls who participated in the event for you r energy and performances. The Summers' rendition of Womaniser was also a top hit by our cheerleaders, who I would also like to congratulate. A special thank you goes to our two Year 12 contestants, Arianna Verios and Sophie Joske, who led with style.
Purple shirts raced continuously over the finish line at the cross-country event. Placing fourth on the day, all of Summers tried their hardest. Inter-House athletics was next on the calendar and the Summers' girls braved the cold conditions to participate on the track. The girls aimed high in sprinting, jumping and throwing. Congratulations to Charlotte Lane who broke two records! Well done to all of you for living up to 'Aim High'. Coming last overall was a slight set back, but the Summers' girls were not going to let that affect their enthusiasm for the rest of the year. A huge thank you to Arianna Verios and Charlotte Lane for your
organisation and coordination in sport over the year!
Public speaking was also an exciting point for Summers, under the coordination of Amelia Brown. Special congratulations to winner, Sophie Joske (Year 12) who always seems to dazzle us with her humour, and the Year 9 debating team who came first!
Arts Day was our final event, coordinated diligently by Maddison Gale. The day was a great success, with girls singing and dancing until they were purple. House choir had big shoes to fill, which Camilla Golding did with ease, doing a great job in always encouraging and motivating the wonderful girls.
Whether it was painted head to toe in purple at athletics or cheering from the sides, I have enjoyed every minute of leading this House in 2009. I would like to thank all Years 7 to 11 for your enthusiasm and a massive thank you to the Year 12 HTG, for your encouragement and support. You continue to amaze me. HUGE thanks to Ms Hodges, our house tutor from Year 8 who has always been there to give a helping hand, and to Ms Lange, for always being so organised and positive. Without you I'm not sure we would have made it!
Congratulations to Zoe Barham and good luck for the coming year. I know I am leaving the House in very capable hands. Thank you Summers, for amazing me by always participating and smiling. Enjoy your years at PLC, as they don't last long. It was a memorable experience leading Summers and I will never forget it.
