A
NEW CLUB! It was shortly before 7 p.m. on the night of Thursday August 8, and just as all forms of life near the waterfront in downtown Kingston thought they could begin making preparations for a (good) night’s rest they were awaken by shouts of “we made it” “we made it” from 21 newly inducted and excited members of the Sunrise Optimist Club of Newport.
Yes fellow optimists, a new club with 26 fully paid up members has dawned in the Caribbean District led by President Michelle Bryan.
After
several weeks of meetings, deciding on bylaws and selecting the team to lead the club, the sun has risen and yes they’ve made it. Please make them welcome!
It
was a very proud Governor Lynden Buchanan (Mammee Bay) who in his remarks urged the newbies to “go forth and make optimism your philosophy of life”. He said members should deepen their optimism by being aware of the problems yet recognize the positives, as they let the sun rise on downtown Kingston.
President
Michelle
spoke passionately in her acceptance speech, stating that “the decision to be here is an easy one because I have lived (experienced) the need to have someone to even just ask you, ‘have you done your homework?’”. She called on members to help each other as it is only by working together that they can build the Sunrise Optimist Club of Newport.
The club organization was presided over by Past International President Theo Golding (Kingston) who welcomed the new club members to the movement, noting that this was their opportunity to “give back to the society from which you draw your daily bread.”
A beaming Lieutenant Governor Maxine Francis-Riley inducted the Board of Directors and called on all club members to reach out to children, especially those who were not being impacted by any social services.
Many
thanks to Optimist Jessica Belle as this new club would not have been a possibility without her input.
