During the 1880’s, at the onset of the pearling industry, Chinatown was a bustle of activity, with its opium and gambling dens and corrugated iron sheds tacked together to house pearling crews and noodle kitchens. Chinatown became a multicultural melting pot and this spirit still continues today, with its unique architecture providing a glimpse of days gone by.
Today, Paspaley Plaza is your one-stop shopping destination, and is home to Coles, Best & Less and Australia Post, plus more than 25 specialty stores on site.
For those interested in Broome’s unique pearling history, the outdoor Colonnade displays a pearling timeline, showing the journey of the Paspaley Pearling Co. from 1935 through to today. Paspaley Pearling Co. are pioneers of the South Sea Pearling Industry, and the pearls they produce here in Broome are known as the world’s very best.
Just as Chinatown was full of noodle houses in its early establishment, today the Plaza embodies this culture hosting a vast array of different eateries from diverse backgrounds — with Haven Broome a bustle from early in the morning with Broome's best coffee and brunch all day, and with establishments such as Ginreab Thai, DMK The Kitchen (Indonesian), Sweets & Koh (Singapore), Subway & Land of Pharaohs (Egyptian/Kebabs) offering meals through to late at night. One of the most beautiful stretches of beach in the world. Cable Beach takes its name from the cable which linked Broome with what is present day Indonesia. Stingers may be present during the months from November to May. Always check by asking the Broome Visitor Centre before swimming.
Broome owes its early beginnings to the discovery in 1861 of the giant pearl oyster Pinctada Maxima which led to the establishment of Broome’s pearling industry.
