Born to Perform
Since then, Pigram Productions has facilitated numerous opportunities for local talent, including helping rapper Jacob Gregory perform in Djarrinjin and Broome, and supporting songwriters such as Damar Kentjana and Luke Puertollano, leading to their debut at the ‘Taste of Broome Soirée.’
Naomi’s own children, Taj Pigram and Tehya Makani, are also among the next generation of performers managed by Pigram Productions, currently on national tours with Ilbijerri Theatre and Wesley Enoch's ‘The Sunshine Club,’ respectively. Proud of their success on the national stage, Naomi says it’s her aim to show the same guidance to all artists engaged by Pigram Productions, ensuring they reach their full potential.
Meanwhile, under Pigram Productions, Naomi herself has big things underway in collaboration with the Black Swan State Theatre and Goolari Media. This project, slated to showcase in Broome soon, will feature a mix of emerging and established local creatives. “Last year I was brought on board by The Black Swan State Theatre as an Associate Artist and have been working on a new piece of work which is reflective of a Broome kid who grew up in my time,” says Naomi.
“The show will be somewhat reflective of what it was like to grow up in the 80s when original music, theatre, and tourism were in full bloom — how these things provided a sense of pride for the local kid and how we all identified as Broome people.” The show will be a part of A Taste of Broome this year, with plans to bring it to Perth in 2025.
For Naomi, many lessons learned as a child can be attributed to her greatest influence, her grandmother Agnes Pigram, a constant source of inspiration for her creative endeavours.
“This incredible woman taught me what it felt like to be loved and made my childhood in Broome exactly what it should feel like,” says Naomi. “I remember her reef walking, lifting (catching) fish one after the other, and the smell of her cooking could fill your belly before it even passed your lips. As I got older, the lessons she taught will forever live on. If I am one day half the woman she was, I will be a happy one.”
Incredibly talented creatives, the Pigram family’s musical prowess knows no bounds. While the Pigram Brothers are no longer actively touring, Stephen Pigram, Naomi’s father, continues his solo music career with Pigram Productions’ support. The company recently promoted his upcoming show, keeping the Pigram musical legacy alive and thriving.
Naomi invites visitors to experience the spirit of Broome through innovative productions showcased through Pigram Productions. While Pigram Productions' website is currently under construction, you can follow their journey on Instagram and Facebook @pigramproductions to discover updates and upcoming events.
