Pigram Productions breeds creativity among local youth under the helm of artistic director and Yaruwu woman, Naomi Pigram-Mitchell.
By TORI WILSON
For the Pigram family, music is in their DNA. Born and raised in Broome, national musical icons the Pigram Brothers make up seven of the talented 12 Pigram siblings, three of whom feature in the Western Australian Music Hall of Fame. With music in their blood from both sides of the family — ranging from country singing bands to classical piano — the family name has become synonymous with the town’s artistic heartbeat.
So, for the Pigram Brother Stephen Pigram's daughter Naomi Pigram-Mitchell, a talented singer and songwriter in her own right, nurturing artistic talent within others was a natural progression. This year, in 2024, Naomi founded the creative production company Pigram Productions with the vision to support the next generation of artistic talent within Broome. She has plenty on the horizon for both visitors and locals alike to look out for.
“I want to support, nurture, and develop another generation of local performing artists who represent the rich, multicultural, musical heritage that belongs to Broome,” says Naomi. “It is a distinct sound that can be heard in the backyards of many local families. Families that have been here for many generations.”
Naomi's first professional foray into the arts kicked off at the age of 17, imparting invaluable lessons and opening her eyes to the challenges of the industry. “My performing arts journey commenced at 17, debuting in Jimmy Chi’s acclaimed musical ‘Corrugation Road,’ on a national tour from 1996 to 1998,” says Naomi.
“Being the youngest in the cast with limited professional experience, I realised the absence of support for creatives plucked straight from the regional and remote areas of the country being launched onto the national stage.”
Further on in her career, in 2019, Naomi co-directed the revival of Jimmy Chi’s hit musical ‘Bran Nue Dae,’ employing local talent and bringing the vibrant sounds of Broome to audiences in Parramatta and Perth. Although the production was sadly cut short by COVID-19, it reinforced Naomi’s commitment to fostering young, regional creatives and providing a supportive platform for their growth.
