Beyond the bite

In memory of the legend Malcolm Douglas, his aweinspiring crocodile park lives on sharing captivating experiences.

In 1964, 23-year-old Malcolm Douglas and his friend David Oldmeadow left their jobs as stock and station agents in New South Wales and set off on a six-month journey around Australia. Before they knew it, six months had escalated to four years and left quite the impression on Malcolm, shaping his future to come.

Along their journey, the duo filmed their outback adventures, which was later used to produce their inspiring documentary, Across the Top, reaching record-breaking ratings for Australian television. Bursting with talent and a taste for adventure, Malcolm went on to become a conservationist and rescuer, as well as produce more than 50 documentaries and films for Channel Seven and Channel Nine.

In 1983, Malcolm transformed his experience with Australian wildlife into something accessible for travellers to Cable Beach — the Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park. Opening with six large crocodiles, over the decades to follow the park grew an became an internationally renowned tourist attraction and home to some of the biggest beasts from the Kimberly’s waterways.

Fast forward to 2007, the Douglas’ moved from their Cable Beach location, out onto the Broome Highway 15 minutes out of town where it resides today.

Visit the park and enter another world through the jaws of a giant saltwater crocodile. Constructed over several months in 2005, the giant fiberglass head is already recognised as the best example of its kind in the world.

Once inside, the park features 2,500 crocodiles, including some of the largest in Australia and a variation of five species of crocodile and alligators.

Run by Malcolm’s family, the park is open seven days a week, 2pm to 5pm, hosting its famous feeding tour at 3pm, daily. You might even get the chance to hold a baby juvenile saltwater crocodile.

The shop onsite is a treasure trove of unique memorabilia. The shop’s museum showcases an extraordinary display of Malcolm’s forty years spent during his famous adventure films. These famous films can be purchased in the shop, as well as a range of saltwater crocodile products including wallets, belts, hatbands and crocodile teeth jewellery.
