CHRISTOF KÜNG (EDITOR-IN-CHIEF & CHIEF CREATIVE DIRECTOR ) Schon immer war Christof Küng fasziniert von Werten und von «Echtem». Er las Bücher, sammelte Magazine und interessierte sich für Design und den technologischen Fortschritt. Aus seinen Interessen wurde schliesslich seine Berufung. In den 20 Jahren seiner Selbstständigkeit gründete er mit der nach ihm benannten Unternehmensgruppe, eine Branding- und eine Marketingagentur, einen Verlag mit diversen Magazinen sowie eine Private-Equity-Boutique. Christof Küng has always been fascinated by values and »authenticity«. He read books and collected magazines, occupied himself with design and technological advances, and these interests finally evolved into his calling! IVA MIRBACH (PHOTOSHOOTING CREATIVE DIRECTOR) Nach einem erstklassigen Abschluss, begann Iva Mirbach ihre Karriere als Modedesignerin. Als Gastdozentin an verschiedenen Universitäten und Fachhochschulen, erreichte sie durch exzep­ tionelle und tiefgründige Vorträge den Status eines Opinion Leaders innerhalb der akademischen Modewelt. Dies ermöglichte ihr einige der exklusivsten Aufträge, vom Entscheidungs­­­­­träger über neue Werbegesichter für renommierte Modemarken bis hin zu Castingberatungen von exzentrischen Modedesignern. Im Zuge der digitalen Expansion der Modewelt, bekleidet Iva einige der höchsten Positionen von diversen Modeunternehmungen und Publikationen. After a top-notch graduation, Iva Mirbach started her career as a Fashion Designer. Through the praise for exceptional lectures at serveral reputable universities across the globe brought her the image of an opinion leader within the educated fashion scene. This brought her to some of the most exclusive actions, from face picking for big brands to the casting consultation of eccentric designers. On the rise of fashion’s new digital audience, Iva is in some of the highest positions of top fashion companies and publications.

SUZANNE SCHWIERTZ (PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE COVER) Die in Hamburg geborene Österreicherin lebt seit vielen Jahren in Zürich. Sie begann ihre Karriere als Fotografin des Opernhaus-Balletts und hat dann von 1991 bis 2012 die Ära Pereira an der Zürcher Oper als Hausfotografin begleitet. Sie hat dabei unzählige Diven und Weltstars von ihrer besten Seite festgehalten – manches CD-Cover zeugt davon – und sich mit ihren einfühlsamen Porträts einen Namen gemacht. Heute arbeitet sie freischaffend als Reportage- und Porträtfotografin; ihre Bilder erscheinen regelmässig in den Zeitschriften «NZZ Folio», «Schweizer Monat» und «Landliebe». Suzanne Schwiertz of Austria was born in Hamburg and has been living in Zurich for many years. She started out her career as a photographer for the Opernhaus Ballett and from 1991 to 2012 accompanied the Pereira era at the Zurich Opera House as the in-house photographer. As such, she has captured the best side of many divas and world stars, as featured on various CD covers, and has made a name for herself with her sensitive portraits.

JULIA PELZER (ILLUSTRATORIN) Julia Pelzer gehört zur Crème de la Crème der Illustratoren und hat sich international einen Namen gemacht. Ihre Karriere startete kometengleich: Direkt nach dem Kunst­ studium landete sie ihren ersten Auftrag bei der VOGUE. Arbeiten für internationale Mode- und Lifestyle-Magazine folgten kurz darauf. Julia Pelzer is amongst today’s finest and exceptional talents in illustration. She emerged on the scene straight after having graduated from arts school in her native Hamburg, one of her first assignments being for German VOGUE. In a short span of time, her work was found in international fashion and lifestyle publications. The valley is flanked to the west and north by the Maya­ ca­mas Mountains and to the east by the Vaca Mountains.

It rises slowly from San Pablo Bay in the south to a height of 110 metres at the foot of Mount Saint Helena in the Mayacamas Mountains. Oakville and Rutherford are virtually in the middle of the valley, which follows the Napa River. The southern part of the valley has sedimentary soil, deposited in San Pablo Bay during various floods.

To the north the soil is of a more volcanic origin. Around 4.7 million visitors stay overnight in Napa Valley and come here for the wine. After Disneyland, this is the most popular tourist attraction in California. Highway 29 and the Silverado Trail further east are popular access roads to a number of the famous ­wineries. Thanks to the Mediterranean climate, the Napa V ­ alley grows wines that have been ranked among the best since the 1960s and which are produced mainly from Cabernet ­Sauvignon, Zinfandel und Chardonnay grapes. In terms of area it covers over 3081 square kilometres along the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada. It attracts over three million visitors a year. In 1984 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as its impressive granite cliffs, waterfalls and clear streams, giant tree groves and diversity of fauna are known around the world. The park is one of the largest and least fragmented habitats in the Sierra Nevada and is home to a wealth of plants and animals. It ranges from 600 to over 4000 metres above sea level, and – because of the different altitudes – features five different eco-systems. Of the 7000 plant species native to California, around 50 % can be found in the Sierra Nevada, and over 20 % are within the area of the park.

The route continues through Death Valley National Park with its extreme temperatures, right across California and on into Nevada. The valley lies in the Mojave Desert, east of the Sierra Nevada, and lies on one of the few roads that lead to Las Vegas. On the way through Death Valley, you notice that you are surrounded by a number of mountain ranges. The highest range is the Panamint Range, which culminates in Telescope Peak (3366 m). The view from this or one of the other mountains over an endless landscape is simply fascinating and completely silent. But the calm soon comes to an end. After driving through the dark, you suddenly come across an enormous sea of lights on the horizon, even in the middle of the night. Welcome to fabulous Las Vegas!

ark Hyatt Zurich was a proud partner of one of the final highlights of the 2014 tennis season: Roger Federer versus Stan Wawrinka at Zürich’s Hallenstadion, dubbed the »Match for Africa«.

The match was held on 21 December 2014 and benefited the Roger Federer Foundation. It was the second time Park Hyatt Zürich had partnered with the event.

Park Hyatt Zurich and the Roger Federer Foundation both celebrated their tenth anniversaries in 2014, a great opportunity for the two organisations to collaborate for a second time on the »Match for Africa« to benefit the Roger Federer Foundation.

The Roger Federer Foundation supports children living in poverty and helps them to realise their potential. The foundation supports education projects in six countries in southern Africa and Switzerland. This year it is already reaching out to 136 000 children.

What is your personal travel style?

Meine Frau und ich schätzen dabei sehr, dass wir mittlerweile als Stammgäste in einigen der wunderbarsten Hotels weltweit willkommen geheissen werden. Nach so vielen Jahren auf der Tour ist es schön für uns, an Orte zurückzukehren, die wir kennen und wo wir persönliche Beziehungen mit dem Personal und der Direktion aufgebaut haben. Als Profisportler und insbesondere als Tennisspieler kommt man nicht drum rum, rund um den Erdball zu reisen. Da ist ein Ort, an dem man sich wohl fühlt und der einem geliebte Annehmlichkeiten bietet, etwas, was das Leben unterwegs sehr viel angenehmer macht.

My home away from home has to be different hotels around the world. One of the things that my wife and I really enjoy is being a returning guest at some wonderful hotels around the world. After so many years being on tour, it’s nice for us and our family to come back to places that we know and where we have developed relationships with the staff and general managers. Being a professional athlete and specifically a tennis player requires you to travel the globe.

So having a place you feel comfortable with amenities you love really makes life on tour that much more exciting.

Your next private journey?

Hoffentlich in mein Chalet, da wir momentan sehr gerne in der Schweiz und insbesondere in den Bergen Zeit verbringen. Dort können unsere Kinder die Wunder in der freien Natur erkunden und erfahren.

Hopefully my next private journey will be to my chalet as these days we love spending time in Switzerland especially in the mountains, so our kids can learn the wonders of being outdoors.

Are you a light traveller?

Ich reise mit einem grossen Team und mit der Familie und somit auch mit einigem Gepäck. Da wir zudem für die unterschiedlichsten Klimazonen packen müssen, ist manchmal eine gewaltige Menge davon erforderlich.

Da haben wir über die Jahre hinweg so manch einen Gewichtszuschlag bezahlt.

I travel with a large team including my family and thus we are certainly not light travellers. As we need to pack for different climates it sometimes requires a tremendous amount of bags. Needless to say we have paid some extra baggage fees to the airlines over the years.

Ich reise immer mit meiner Familie. Zusätzlich habe ich immer meine Tennis-Rackets, die Bekleidung für auf und neben dem Platz, eine Uhr und Lindt-Schokolade dabei. Letztere als kleines Geschenk aus der Schweiz für Freunde, die ich eine Weile nicht mehr gesehen habe.

When I travel I always take with me my family, my tennis rackets, clothing for both on and off court, a watch and Lindt chocolate as I love to give a little gift of something from Switzerland to friends that I haven’t seen for a while.

What can one find in your home from your world discoveries?

Tennis-Trophäen, Kunstgegenstände, die wir in verschiedenen Ländern rund um die Welt gefunden haben, und den roten Umschlag, den mir meine Fans auf meinen Tournieren um die Welt immer schenken.

Es wäre in den Schweizer Alpen gelegen und würde über viele verschiedene Restaurants verfügen. Dazu gehören würde sicherlich ein traditionell schweizerisches, ein italienisches und ein Gourmet-Restaurant mit Gerichten aus den verschiedenen Ländern, die ich im Laufe meiner Karriere besucht habe.

MY PERSONAL PERKS THAT I LOVE WHEN I’M AT A HOTEL ARE THE COMFY AND FLUFFY BATHROBES.

My personal perks that I love when I’m at a hotel are the comfy and fluffy bathrobes that some hotels provide their guests in the room. We also really love when a hotel has a strong and sturdy umbrella for walking outside.

If you were to open a hotel or restaurant it would be …

If I were to open a hotel or restaurant it would be located in the Swiss Alps and would have many different restaurants including a traditional Swiss restaurant and an Italian restaurant and a fine dining restaurant with dishes from the different countries I’ve visited throughout my career.

Ihre Lieblingsstadt und warum?

Your favourite city and why?

Basel ist meine Heimatstadt und daher wird sie für mich immer etwas Besonderes sein. Als professioneller Tennisspieler geniesse ich das Privileg, um die Welt zu reisen und viele verschiedene Städte zu besuchen. Es gibt sehr viele wunderbare Orte – und ich entdecke immer wieder neue. Dieses Jahr habe ich zum Beispiel zum ersten Mal in Istanbul gespielt.

Basel is my hometown, so this city will always be special to me. As a professional tennis player I have the privilege to travel the world and visit so many cities all around the globe. And there are a lot of great places. I still discover new ones. This year for example I will play for the first time in Istanbul.

Wie verbringen Sie Ihre Zeit an Flughäfen?

How do you spend your time at airports?

Wie jedermann und mit der üblichen Prozedur: Check-In, Sicherheitskontrolle, Passkontrolle, Boarding. Da ich ein Abkommen mit NetJets habe, geniesse ich manchmal das Glück privat zu fliegen und dadurch weniger Zeit am Terminal verbringen zu müssen. Für einen professionellen Tennisspieler ist diese Zeitersparnis sehr hilfreich, da wir immer unterwegs sind und dieser Zeitverlust an Flughäfen manchmal von unserer Zeit auf dem Platz «abzieht».

Actually as everybody, the usual procedure: check-in, security check, passport, boarding. But sometimes I’m fortunate, as I have a deal with NetJets, to fly privately and therefore there’s not that much time in the terminal.

But as a professional tennis player these timesavings are quite helpful as we’re always on the move; and wasting time in airports is sometimes frustrating.

… bin ich in der Schweiz und ich wandere mit meinen Kindern in den Bergen. Für mich ist dies eine wundervolle Möglichkeit, dem Chaos des Alltags zu entkommen und die natürliche und wunderschöne Landschaft ­m eines Heimatlandes mit meiner Frau und meinen ­Kindern zu geniessen.

If I don’t travel I’m in Switzerland and I’m hiking in the mountains with my kids. For me it’s such a wonderful opportunity to escape the chaos of everyday life and enjoy the natural and beautiful scenery of my home country with my wife and kids.

You have not been to … yet, but would like to go because…

Ich würde gerne noch verschiedene Länder Afrikas besuchen, wo ich bis anhin noch nicht war. Da meine Mutter Südafrikanerin ist und meine Stiftung, die Roger ­Federer Foundation ihre Wohltätigkeitsbemühungen auf den südlichen Teil Afrikas fokussiert, würde ich sehr gerne mit meiner Familie dorthin reisen und weitere Länder des Kontinents besuchen. Die Schönheit der Natur und die Menschen sind so wunderbar. Das ist etwas, was ich mich freue zu tun, nachdem ich mich vom Tennissport zurückgezogen habe.

I’ve not been yet but I would like to go to some different countries in Africa. As my mom is South African and my foundation, the Roger Federer Foundation, focuses its efforts on charities based in the southern part of Africa I really would like to go with my family and see different countries on the continent. The natural beauty and the people are so wonderful and this is something I look forward to doing when I retire from tennis.

Ich habe so viele Lieblingsrestaurants rund um die Welt, dass ich nicht weiss, wo ich anfangen soll. Aber es gibt einen besonderen Ort in Rom, der Taverna Trilussa heisst und der ein Muss ist, sollten Sie einmal in dieser Stadt sein.

I have so many favourite restaurants around the world that I wouldn’t know where to begin. But there is a special place in Rome called Taverna Trilussa and it’s a must go if you’re ever in that city.

Was bedeutet die Stiftung für Sie?

What does the Foundation mean to you?

Die Stiftung bedeutet mir sehr viel. Ich hatte schon von früh an den Wunsch, etwas zurückzugeben, indem ich jenen helfe, die weniger privilegiert sind. Und Südafrika ist für mich mit besonderen Emotionen und Gefühlen verbunden. Ich habe eine grosse Leidenschaft für Afrika.

Mangels qualifizierter Bildung können jedoch nicht alle Kinder des Kontinents ihr Potential entfalten. Ich fühle mich verpflichtet und bin höchst motiviert, dass ich mit meiner Stiftung dafür etwas bewegen kann.

The Foundation means a lot to me. I had the wish to give back from a very early stage helping those who were less privileged then I was. And it was for me an emotion from South Africa. I have a passion for Africa. But not all children in the continent can really use their potential because of lack of quality education. And I feel humbled and I am really motivated that with my Foundation I can make a difference in this regard.

At the hotel this year, your Foundation had its 10 years’ anniversary in 2014. Which is your biggest achievement so far?

Jedes einzelne Kind, das heute Dank unserer Unterstützung eine bessere Bildung erhält, macht mich stolz und ist ein Erfolg, der betont werden muss. Letztes Jahr erreichten wir 146 000 Kinder. Jedes Mal, wenn wir vor Ort gehen und unsere Programme besuchen, ist es überwältigend, welche grundlegenden Veränderungen möglich sind, wenn Sie den richtigen Ansatz wählen, und wie entscheidend das im Leben eines Kindes ist.

Every single child who receives today thanks to our support a better quality of education makes me proud and is an achievement to be underlined. Last year we reached 146 000 of such children. It is hard to imagine what this really means if you are sitting at home in your comfortable home. But each time we go to the field and are visiting our programmes it is overwhelming what kind of fundamental changes are possible if you choose the right approach and how decisive this is in a child’s life.

Zukunftswunsch für Ihre Stiftung?

Future wish for your Foundation?

Obwohl die Stiftung bereits 11 Jahre alt ist, stehen wir erst am Anfang einer langen Reise. Es gibt so vieles zu lernen, so vieles, was wir erreichen möchten. Unser nächster ambitiöser Meilenstein ist es, dass wir mit unserem Programm bis 2018 eine Million Kinder erreichen möchten.

Und wir möchten sowohl Champion in unserer Wohltätigkeitsarbeit werden als auch ein Vorbild für Qualität und Effizienz sein. Schliesslich möchten wir für das Potential von Afrika einstehen und es sichtbar machen.

Aufgrund der vergangenen Erfahrungen glaube ich wirklich, dass wir die Dinge in Afrika zum Besseren verändern können, wenn wir es richtig angehen. Wenn wir diesbezüglich ein Vorbild werden, so würde mich das sehr stolz machen.

Although the Foundation is already 11 years old, we are at the beginning of a long-term journey. There is so much to learn, so much we want to achieve. Our next ambitious milestone is that we want to reach with our programme one million children by 2018. And we want to become a champion in our philanthropic work as well as be a role model of quality and effectiveness. Finally, we want to advocate for and make visible the potential of Africa.

Based on past experiences, I truly believe that we can change things in Africa into better if we do it right. If we could become a role model in this regard that would make me proud.

errari LaFerrari, McLaren P1, Porsche 918 and Spyder are there and Tesla has shown that it can be done. On the one hand, alternative drive-train options ensure a quantum leap in the increase in driving range and speed; on the other hand they guarantee a considerable image gain in personal use of these special motor cars. And now another player is joining the game of speed combined with sustainability. While it used to be rich heirs, racing drivers or engineers – all of them visionaries – who designed and promoted new cars, with the QUANT models it is the artist Nunzio La Vecchia.

Born in Switzerland in 1965, he has made several disc recordings, reported a breakthrough in solar technology and claims to have found a solution to a problem which many car manufacturers have racked their brains about in vain to date.

Und wir waren exklusiv dabei, als das Fahrzeug vom Park Hyatt Zürich aus kommend seine Runden durch die Innenstadt von Zürich drehte. Dies erinnert uns an die Anfänge der e ­ rsten batteriebetriebenen Elektrofahrzeuge.

Der Erfolgsgeschichte von Tesla nicht unähnlich ähneln in unserer heutigen Zeit die Wasserstoffautos einer Fata Morgana. Seit Jahren wirken sie zum Greifen nah, doch Starttermine wurden regelmässig ver­schoben.

Nun machen gleich mehrere Hersteller ernst. Mit dem Wasserstoffmodel Mirai geht Toyota in die serienmässige Produktion, Mercedes und BMW stehen vor der Einführung – aber so spektakulär wie Prof. Jens Ellermann, Präsident des Board of Directors der nanoFlowcell AG treibt die Entwicklung von elektrischen Sportlimousine keiner voran. Und was sich nun geschmeidig und leise durch Zürich bewegt, kann sich sehen lassen: Statt herkömmlicher Akkus versorgt eine Flusszelle die vier E-Motoren mit Strom. Durch die Zelle wird ElektrolytFlüssigkeit gepumpt, die dort Energie freisetzt und dann verdampft wird.

A true sports car powered by fuel-cell technology – now German-registered – is now on the road for the first time in the form of the premium model QUANT E. We were there to see it exclusively when the car did a few laps of Zurich’s central city from the Park Hyatt Zurich hotel. And just by standing on the side of the road, the car’s exciting design guaranteed the first rounds of applause from passers-by.

This reminds us of the beginnings of the first batterydriven electric cars.

Similar to Tesla’s success story, the hydrogen-powered cars resemble a Fata Morgana In this day and age. For years they looked as though they have been within reach but start-dates were regularly postponed. Now several manufacturers are getting serious at the same time. Toyota is starting series production of its hydrogen-powered Mirai and Mercedes and BMW are about to introduce their own models but no-one is pushinging the development of electric sport saloon cars as much as Prof. Jens Ellermann, President of the Board of Directors of nanoFlowcell AG. And moving smoothly through the streets of Zurich it is a sight to behold: instead of conventional rechargeable batteries, a flowcell supplies the four e-motors with electricity. Electrolyte liquid is pumped through the cell which releases energy there and then evaporates.

Die Leistungs- und Fahrdaten, die die Nanoflowcell für den viersitzigen Flügeltürer ausweist, sind beein­ druckend: bis zu 1090 PS Leistung, ein Spitzentempo jenseits von 300 km/h und über 800 Kilometer Reichweite pro Elektrolyte-Tankfüllung. Die beiden Tanks für die ionische Flüssigkeit zur Energiegewinnung fassen je 250 Liter, das Auftanken soll nicht länger als bei Benzin- oder Dieselautos dauern. Damit will man zeigen, was technisch machbar ist. Mit dem 5,25 Meter langen Quant F, der an den 2014 in Genf vorgestellten Quant E anknüpft, strebt Nanoflowcell die Homologation für die Serienproduktion an. In direkter Nachbarschaft zum Entwicklungszentrum eines deutschen PremiumSportwagenherstellers entwickelt die nanoFlowcell AG in Weissach/Baden-Württemberg mit ihren Partnern die aktuelle Version des Quant, den Quant F, eine Weiterentwicklung der 2014er Version der Quant e-Sportlimousine mit nanoFlowcell® Antrieb, kurz Quant E. Am Aussendesign soll sich wenig ändern, dafür soll es drinnen etwas geräumiger zugehen. Ein neu entwickeltes Monocoque aus Carbon mit schmalerer A-Säule soll den Passagieren mehr Platz und mehr passive Sicherheit bieten, teilt uns Nunzio La Vecchia wieder zurück im Park Hyatt Zürich mit. Neu wird auch ein zweistufiger Heckflügel sein. Dieser schaltet sich bei 80 km/h automatisch zu und soll so einen zusätzlichen Anpressdruck auf die Hinterräder bringen. Das aerodynamische Design liefere «herausragende Luftwiderstandsbeiwerte», so La Vecchia. Ein weiteres neues Detail befindet sich in den Frontscheinwerfern des Quant F: Dort seien Kristalle eingebaut, die – von hinten beleuchtet – ein «Q» projizieren, sobald die Scheinwerfer eingeschaltet werden.

The performance and driving data provided by Nanoflowcell for its four-seater wing-door car are impressive: up to 1090 HP performance, a top speed of over 300 km/h and over 800 kilometres range for each refuelling of electrolytes. Both tanks of the ion liquid used to provide power each hold 250 litres; refuelling should last as long as for petrol or diesel-powered vehicles.

This is to show what is technically possible. Related to the linked to the Quant E which it exhibited in Geneva in 2014, Nanoflowcell wants to use its 5.25 metre-long Quant F to achieve homologation for series production.

Directly adjacent to the development centre of a German premium sports car manufacturer, nanoFlowcell AG and its partners are developing the Quant F, the current version of the Quant, a further version of the 2014 version of the Quant e-sports saloon with nanoFlowcell® drive Quant E for short - in Weissach, Baden-Württemberg.

Little of the exterior design is to be changed but the interior is to be roomier. A newly-developed carbon monocoque with a narrow A-pillar is designed to give passengers more room and more passive safety, says Nunzio La Vecchia back at the Park Hyatt Zurich. A twostage tail-plane is also new: it closes automatically at 80 km/h in order to put additional pressure on the rear wheels. The aerodynamic design provides »excellent airresistance drag coefficients«, La Vecchia says. A further new detail is located in the front headlights of the Quant F: when illuminated from behind, built-in crystals project a »Q« as soon as the headlights are turned on.

GARDEN GATE, NAPA VALLEY

Das Napa Valley steigt von der San Francisco Bucht im Süden – welches auf auf Seehöhe liegt – ganz langsam auf eine Höhe von 110 Metern am Fuss des Mount Saint Helena an. Die kleine, äusserst beschauliche Hauptstadt Napa, ist – obwohl man sich jetzt mitten in einem Weinbaugebiet befindet – eine «Hafenstadt» am Napa River und liegt am Anfang des Tales. Younthville, Oakville und Rutherford liegen dann versetzt in der Länge, praktisch mittig, innerhalb des dem Napa River folgenden Tals. Im Süden des Tals herrschen Sedimentböden vor, die während einiger Überschwemmungsperioden der Bucht von San Pablo abgesetzt wurden. Im Norden hingegen findet man Böden vulkanischen Ursprungs.

Napa Valley rises at San Francisco Bay to the south – located at sea-level – very slowly to a height of 110 metres at the foot of Mount Saint Helena. The Valley’s small, extremely picturesque capital of Napa, is a »port« on the Napa River – although you are now in the centre of a winemaking area – and lies at the entrance to the Valley.

Yountville, Oakville and Rutherford lie off to the side in the elongated, almost centrally-located valley which follows the Napa River. South of the valley, sedimentary soils, which were left after some flooding periods of San Pablo Bay, predominate. By contrast, the soils to the north are volcanic.

CARNEROS HILLS

Der Highway 29 vorbei an den berühmten, rollenden Hügeln der «Carneros Hills» ist ein beliebter Zubringer zu einer Vielzahl berühmter Weingüter. Viele bekannte Winzer haben ihren Sitz rund um Carneros. Das Klima wird hier besonders durch die typischen Faktoren des Napa Valley beeinflusst: Die geografische Nähe zum westlich liegenden Pazifik machen die Lagen am Morgen kühl.

Durch Einschnitte in den parallel zur Küste verlaufenden Gebirgsketten der California Coast Ranges können kühler Morgennebel und kühlende Meeresbrisen lokal ins Landesinnere dringen. Dieser Effekt erklärt, warum die südlich liegende Gebiete um Los Carneros kühler als die weiter nördlich gelegenen Gebiete sind. Die Tagestemperatur kann später am Tag auf über 35 Grad steigen. Dieser klimatische Wechsel – zwischen kühlem Nebel und wärmender Sonne – macht das Napa Valley in Kombination mit dem über Jahrtausende gewachsenen Sediment zu einem der besten Weinbaugebiete der Welt.

Highway 29, past the famous rolling hills of «Carneros Hills», is a popular feeder highway to a large number of famous vineyards. Many well-known winemakers are based around Carneros. The climate is influenced by the typical factors of Napa Valley: its geographical proximity to the Pacific Ocean to the west make the winegrowing areas cool in the mornings. Cooler morning fog and cooling sea breezes are able to make their way inland through valleys cut into the cordilleras of the California Coast Ranges which run parallel to the coast. This effect explains why the regions in the south around Los Carneros are cooler than the more northern regions. Temperatures can rise to over 35° C during the day. This change in climate between cool fog and warming sun combined with the sediment which has accumulated here over the millennia makes Napa Valley one of the best wine-making regions in the world.

CUVAISON – EIN SCHWEIZER WEINGUT

Das eigentliche «Herz» des Cuvaison Rebgutes liegt genau mitten im Carneros-Gebiet. Die dort wachsenden Trauben sind besonders gesucht, weil das Klima von der kühlen Meeresbrise und dem willkommenen Morgen­ nebel der San Francisco Bay beeinflusst wird. Diese bewirken eine langsamere Vegetationsentwicklung und eine Milderung der grossen Hitze am Tag. Im Jahr 1969 gegründet, werden heute bei der ­Cuvaison Napa Valley Estate Company ausschliesslich ­C hardonnay- und Pinot-Noir-Trauben in einem zertifizierten nachhaltigen Weinberg angebaut. Später werden diese in der hauseigenen Kellerei zum eigenen Wein produziert. Die Philosophie zur Herstellung der ­Cuvaison-Weine basiert auf der Block Methode. Dank dieser selektierten Landwirtschaft entstehen schliesslich in Handarbeit die von Steve Rogstad gekelterten Cuvaison Weine. ­Diese sind wegen der speziellen Lage und Anbaumethode besonders ausgewogen und bieten trotzdem sowohl feine Nuance als auch die Komplexität von Kraft und Reife.

The grapes that grow there are particularly sought-­after, as the climate is influenced by the cool sea breeze and welcome morning fog that rolls in from San Francisco Bay. The vegetation thus develops at a slower pace, as the midday heat is lessened.

Established in 1969, Cuvaison is a Napa Valley estate vineyard and winery that produces Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grown exclusively on its certified sustainable vineyard in Carneros, Napa Valley. Dedicated to a philosophy of producing vineyard-driven wines, C ­ uvaison employs block by block farming methods and a handcrafted vineyard-to-bottle winemaking approach. Created from blocks that have been vinified separately by Winemaker Steve Rogstad, Cuvaison wines are consistently balanced and approachable, favouring nuance and complexity over sheer power and ripeness.

Cuvaison wurde von seinen aktuellen Besitzern, der Familie Schmidheiny, die das Weingut 1979 erworben hatte, geprägt. Als Thomas Schmidheinys Mutter in den späten 1970er-Jahren die Gegend von Carneros besuchte, war sie von der Landschaft und ihrem Potential für den Weinbau derart beeindruckt, dass sie eine Bodenprobe mit nach Hause nahm, um sie ihrer Familie zu zeigen.

Ein Jahr später erwarb Thomas das Gut in Carneros, wo heute die Heimat von Cuvaison ist. In den Jahren seither hat die Familie sämtliche Erträge des Weinguts sorgfältig reinvestiert und so ständig die nötige Unterstützung zur Produktion qualitativ hochstehender Trauben und Weine gewährt. Cuvaison wird vor Ort von einem saisonal tätigen Team gemanagt, dem der 2002 zum Vorsitzenden ernannte Jay Schuppert und der im gleichen Jahr als Winzer eingesetzte Steve Rogstad angehören.

Cuvaison has been shaped profoundly by its current owners, the Schmidheiny family of Switzer­land who purchased the winery in 1979. When Thomas Schmidheiny’s mother visited the Carneros region in the late 1970’s, she was so taken with the landscape and its potential for winegrowing that she brought a soil sample home to show her family. A year later, Thomas purchased the Carneros estate where Cuvaison now makes its home. In the years since, the family has thoughtfully re-invested all profits in the vineyard and winery, consistently providing the support needed to produce the highest quality grapes and wines. Cuvaison is locally-managed by a seasoned team that includes Jay Schuppert, named President in 2002, and Steve Rogstad, who was appointed Winemaker the same year.
