Und Turin steht für Auto und Fiat. 1899 wird die Marke gegründet, die die Stadt im Namen trägt: Fiat ist das Akronym für ‚Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino’. Und es wurde eine atemberaubende Erfolgsgeschichte für die Stadt. Hier steht eines der weltweit eindrucksvollsten Monumente der Industriearchitektur, die 1923 erbaute Fiatfabrik Lingotto. Auf fünf Etagen wurden bis 1982 Autos produziert. Zum Testen fuhren die Modelle über spiralförmige Rampen auf das Dach des ein Kilometer langen Gebäudes mit seinen zwei spektakulären Steilkurven an den Stirnseiten. Heute besticht das Gebäude durch die An- und Einbauten von Stararchitekt Renzo Piano. Dem großen Baumeister ist die gläserne blaue Blase mit angedocktem Hubschrauberlandeplatz zu verdanken. Innerhalb einer Steilkurve brachte Piano in einem streng quaderförmigen Aufbau die «Pinacoteca Giovanni e Marella Agnelli» unter, die große Werke aus der Sammlung des verstorbenen Patrons ausstellt.

The brand was founded in 1899 and incorporates the city in its name: Fiat is the acronym for Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino. And it was to become a breathtaking success story for the city, which is home to one of the world’s most impressive monuments of industrial architecture, the Fiat Lingotto factory built in 1923. Cars were produced here on five floors until 1982. Models were driven over spiral ramps onto the roof of the kilometer-long building with its two spectacular banked turns at either end for test runs. Today the building impresses with its extensions and additions by star architect Renzo Piano. The blue glass bubble with helicopter landing place bears his signature. Inside one of the banked turns Piano incorporated the starkly square structure of the “Pinacoteca Giovanni e Marella Agnelli” in which major works from the collection of the deceased patron of the arts are exhibited.
