@pratt magazine JUN-AUG 2015

I love the way Seattle celebrates summertime. It’s as if we are awakened with a solar-powered blast of energy, suddenly celebrating the light and refusing to waste a single minute of it. Endless hours of sun, sea, food and friends. And, of course, the festivals! It feels as though there is a festival every weekend and more often than not, you’ll find art at the center of it. You can bet that I’ll be out and about all summer long, nourishing my soul with celebrations that highlight art and artists. Here are few of the fairs and fests I’ll be checking out: JUNE 13

Georgetown Carnival

JUNE 19-21

Fremont Fair

JUNE 27-28

Urban Craft Uprising

JULY 24-26

Bellevue ARTSfair

JULY 30-AUG 2 Seattle Art Fair AUGUST 15

Central Area Community Festival

I always seem to come away from these events charged up and inspired to get back in the studio. Let’s get out there and get inspired together! Cheers,

Steve Galatro Executive Director

Work together as a group to design and assemble either a stainless steel garden trellis, chair, or sculpture using the tools and techniques associated with the metal inert gas (MIG) welding process. An extraordinary and collaborative experience for corporate groups, consider incorporating a company logo or other custom design for an additional fee.

Interview with

LeslieUlrich BY HEATHER OLSON

Leslie studied papermaking and printmaking in St. Louis at Webster University, where she grew up. After graduation she studied and worked at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina and met her husband, Scott. Leslie attended the Appalachian Center for Crafts in Tennessee in the Emerging-Artist-in-Residence program in the Fiber Arts Department. In 1993 she made the journey west to attend the masters program in Fiber Arts at the University of Washington in Seattle. In 2001 she moved to Toyama, Japan and became a mother of two children. During that time she was influenced by the Asian culture and aesthetics. Now she is back in Seattle with her family and making as

much art as possible. Leslie’s current series of work is entitled Patch Worked, which is an exploration and celebration of color and pattern, created from an everyday object. Patch Worked is painted paper, cut and sewn together in interpretive and traditional patterns that hangs and undulates like quilts or blankets. She uses recycled paper bags that she can reuse and paint any color. It is a happy challenge to take an ordinary object and make it into something a little more interesting. It is a contemporary look at the traditional craft of quilt making, “making something out of nothing.” @PM: What inspired

you to want to make art? LU: My mother is a quilt maker, and she really inspired me. I love color and pattern, and I would often organize color and pattern in my head. After high school I felt a little lost, but then got into a small liberal arts university in St. Louis, Webster University, and things really took off from there. I realized making art was what I wanted to do. @PM: When did you decide to pursue art as your career? LU: I made that choice as an undergraduate. I started taking printmaking and realized that I could make prints on fabric. I got into surface design, pattern making, and dyeing mate-

P R A T T rial. It all started to click. I realized that instead of using store-bought things, I could make my own fabric, and that was exciting. @PM: What challenges did you face when making that decision? LU: I think we all ask ourselves the same questions out of art school: where am I going to work? How do I get paid? How do I keep making? One of my professors from Webster recommended that I go to Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina, so that part was smooth. Going to Penland was very helpful, and then I started working for Harvey Littleton a Vitreographer and Grandfather of the Glass Studio Movement, and things started to fall into place. I had met my husband Scott at that point and he was in a similar place, so that worked well too. From there I went to the Craft Center in Tennessee, and that catapulted me further. Of course there are still the daily challenges—motivation, money, materials. @PM: Tell me about your current art projects—what materials do you use and what is your process? LU: I feel pulled in a few directions right now—I’ve been working in a quilt shop with all these amazing designer fabrics, and that’s very seductive. But, using fabric can cost a lot of money. I go back and forth between fabric and paper, and I started using

paper because it’s such an economical material, and I can make my own colors instead of dyeing fabric. When I had my kids, I didn’t want the chemicals in the house, so paper was a great choice. I can sew paper, and in 2008 I started doing that and really developing it. I use different materials, scissors, and rotary cutters. I am very lucky to have a studio in my house where I can spread everything out. I’ll paint and then let things dry, and then move on to another project. At times it’s a bit of a battle, deciding how to work with both fabric and paper. I think about paper a lot and how to present it as a textile, making it flow and undulate. I like sewing small pieces and collaging onto scrap wood that I’ve paint-

ed, and putting wood pieces together and forming a larger patchwork. I love the idea of patchwork— different textures and colors and values coming together into a whole. @PM: Your work strikes me as very joyful, and you describe it as a “happy challenge.” What inspires you most and how do you use that inspiration as you create new work? LU: The “happy” part didn’t always go down so well in grad school. Some of my professors wanted things to be more dark and sad. My experiences were often positive and happy, and people don’t always take happy work seriously. But look at the Japanese: lots happy images and smiling faces. I’m at an (continued on page 27)

If you look at my work and feel happy, that’s great. I’m fine with that. I am very inspired by other artists. I often look at the work of artists I like to get started again. I love the African-American improv quilts, and Nancy Crow, who revitalized quilt making in the 1970s and is still going strong. Ted Larsen works with wood and metal in a patchwork way and makes 3D and 2D art, and I like looking at his work. I love Asian cultures and find them very inspiring, especially paper art, which is so revered there. I make paper balls and was inspired by the paper balloons in Japan. They are fragile and will break eventually, but they are so playful. How can you not be attracted

to that? They bring out the kid in all of us. @PM: What is your dream project? LU: I’ve made a lot of proposals to galleries for shows I’d love to have and am hoping for some opportunities there. I’d love to create really large ball shapes that are made from paper, and figure out how to use an armature with them. I’d like to make patchworked balls and have three or five huge ones in a large space. Or create lots of small ones and have walls covered with color. I think being surrounded by all of it would be great. @PM: Tell me about your time in Japan and how that has shaped your life and work. LU: Scott and I were living in Seattle, and I was working for Pilchuck Glass School at that time in special events, and making

more glass art then. Scott got the opportunity to teach at Toyama City Glass Institute, so we went. Visiting a place is so different from living there, and when we got there we really started from square one. Japan influenced me a lot by making me feel helpless at times, and I realized I had to open myself up and learn so much. The culture, the language, how to make food, everything. It felt like starting over, like being a kid. I was very inspired by all the paper art and the great history there, as well as the textile industry. In Japanese culture there is something called boro—it’s similar to American quilt making where you collect fabric pieces and patch things together. During World War II there wasn’t money for many people to buy new clothing or fabric, so they were constantly patching what they had. There were gorgeous

P R A T T examples that the emperor had, but most people had to make clothing and bed ware from scraps of material. They used big stitches and didn’t try to hide that or make it perfect. I would go to flea markets and look for examples of boro and I found quilts and old kimonos. I’d take cotton kimonos and cut those up to make my own quilts and artwork. We lived in Japan for four years, and got to know many other artists there through the glass school. @PM: Does being a mother influence how you teach children in your classes? LU: My kids are 9 and 12, and they do less with me in the studio now. When they were younger we’d all go into the studio and make art every day. I miss that! But they are still avid artists, drawing, and sewing. I think if you are making art as an adult, kids will want to try making art also. Showing them through your own example is great.

We can encourage them by making our art and then we can also see how kids have their own ideas and their own vision. Kids don’t have as many limits or fears as we do. @PM: Do your kids love making art? Are they interested in careers as artists? LU: Yes, they do. They know they are already artists. I tell them to keep making art—that it’s something they can always do, but that it’s also great to get a job that pays the bills. My daughter Jessica has lots of ideas about what she might want to do for work, and she says, “I’m already an artist mom.” @PM: What do you most enjoy about teaching? LU: I think it’s the process. I like thinking about what projects will be interesting to students, gathering the materials, and presenting them. I also like to think about what works within the timeframe we have and how to always make more than one thing. Kids

are so interesting in the ways they learn from each other and work together. I feel that you just need to start them off and be there for support. @PM: Which classes will you teach this summer at Pratt? LU: I am excited about Scissors, Tape and Glue Everything. I saw the cool things my kids made in those classes over the last two summers—great 3D pieces that we have in our house. I like the idea of working in 3D and seeing where that will go. I’ll also be teaching What Does Picasso Paint and World Art. All of the classes can be both 2D and 3D. @PM: What words of wisdom or encouragement would you share with a child who wants to make art? LU: I’d say “You’re an artist!” I’d like to empower kids to make many things, and not feel like they need to get things right the first time. Keep going, try things out, and see how things develop.
