What You Need to Know About Open Enrollment in Colorado

Photoscourtesy: BoulderValleySchoolDistrict

For as long as there’s been a housing market, “great schools” has been a family neighborhood’s top selling point but does it really drive a sale? Not necessarily We all appreciate and support our excellent schools without question, but proximity to them needn’t determine where student educational journeys take place

Since 1994, Colorado families have had the option to request attendance at any state public school for free, even across district lines. Also known as Open Enrollment, the Public Schools of Choice law states that resident pupils may enroll in public schools other than that for which they are officially zoned according to home address, provided certain criteria is met. In other words, choices abound. But what does this really mean, and how does it work? Here, school officials answer popular questions

WHY OPEN ENROLL?

There are many reasons families may wish to consider open enrollment it all comes down to individual circumstances An anticipated move or schedule constraints may impact

decisions A school’s specific focus or unique educational model may hold strong appeal. Whatever the pull, families can rest assured that their choices all their choices are good one Locally, we couldn’t be in better hands, with Boulder Valley School District, St. Vrain Valley School District, and Adams 12 Five Star Schools all offering the utmost in extensive, top-quality, rigorous and diverse programming.

HOW DOES OPEN ENROLLMENT WORK?

Each district offers online applications that can be submitted within specific timelines, shared in detail on their respective websites Charter schools, public schools run by independent boards of directors as opposed to the district school board, have their own systems, and should be approached directly

How submitted applications are handled varies between districts. In St. Vrain Valley School District, students are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, with exceptions made for students who have a sibling already attending the

school of choice In contrast, Boulder Valley School District’s selection is based on a lottery process during the designated window, with transparency being top priority in efforts to accommodate all “We produce board policies so all families can see our dates, preferences, and how we are completing our lottery,” says Mike Wilcox, BVSD Director for Student Enrollment “We further keep our window open for a long time, trying to maximize opportunities ”

In Adams 12, three rounds of choice are offered, with the first round encouraged for priority consideration. Here, applications are considered on a lottery basis in rounds one and two, with the third round being processed on a first-come, first-served basis dependent on space.

WHEN CAN SCHOOLS DENY ENROLLMENT?

Schools can deny applications for a couple of reasons, explains Amber Muir, SVVSD Student Data Manager. The primary reason this happens is when capacity is reached in the requested grade level or as a whole school The open enrollment law also allows for requests to be denied in instances when an issue is determined to be a concern through Safe School Legislation, when a school does not offer services or facilities to meet a student’s needs, or when the students has been expelled Typically in these cases, recommendations will be made for a school placement that can better meet student needs, says Muir.

Raised in the Rockies

tours and events,” Wilcox says. “All schools post info on their own and district websites, and staff are always available to talk with interested families on site.”

All three districts offer tours, and work to be as accommodating as possible when it comes to supporting families in their research.

WHAT FACTORS SHOULD FAMILIES CONSIDER IN FINDING THE RIGHT FIT?

One factor families should consider carefully is whether or not students can reasonably get to and from schools once accepted. Transportation is not provided. Outside of that, it comes down to personal preferences. So many options can be overwhelming, but they don’t have to be. Take heart in knowing, all the choices truly are good ones. What’s more, students are always welcome at their neighborhood “home school”.

“You cannot make a bad choice,” says Robbyn Fernandez, BVSD Assistant Superintendent of School Leadership.

WHERE SHOULD I BEGIN?

Start by exploring. Individual school websites are replete with vibrant, thorough information across all local districts The St Vrain Valley School District Communications Department puts together a great catalog of schools and their programs, Muir shares All 5th grade and 8th grade families receive a Middle and High School Options publication in the mail showcasing the variety of school and program options available to them.

Once you’ve gotten a sense of what’s out there, go visit. “We offer plenty of

“We are far more alike than we are different. All our schools ground instruction in state standards, share the same dedication to our students and families, and have the same driven instructional purpose.”

Choosing a Private School for Your Child

“Once you’ve started to answer these questions and have narrowed in on what you are looking for, start to research schools,” says Hoops “Ask as many questions as you can during the process It is important to make sure your prospective school values partnership with families, can support your definition of success for your student, and will commit to your student’s academic, social, and emotional growth ”

WHAT CAN YOU AFFORD?

For many parents, choosing the right private school for their child is difficult. Boulder County is fortunate to have numerous quality private schools but narrowing the choice down to one isn’t’ easy When you consider your child’s preference, your preference, and a school’s values, academic performance, curriculum and reputation, there is much at play. There is also the fact that unlike a public school, you may have to apply and your child’s enrollment isn’t a given That’s stressful! We’re happy to share some wise thoughts here from a private school administrator and a parent of kids in private school that might help clear a path for your family’s journey into private education

IS YOUR CHILD FLOURISHING?

“There are so many wonderful educational opportunities for students and families in Boulder,” says Payton Hoops, Director of Enrollment Management at Watershed School The best place to start is by asking questions about your student: Is my student flourishing in their current educational environment? What is working well, and what is not working so well? When are they curious, engaged, interested? What does success at school look like for my student? What environment will they thrive in?”

Don’t rush through these answers

Conversations with your student’s current teachers or principal might be in order to get a well-rounded view of how your child is really doing in school. How about class size? Is your student more at ease and better able to focus in a small class? Generally speaking, private schools have a lower student-to-teacher ratio. It’s reasonable to ask about enrollment numbers and class sizes. A smaller school may lead students to feel more closely knit

It won’t surprise anyone to read here that private schools can be very expensive Before you get too far down the road of choosing schools, consider what’s doable in your budget. In a commentary on educationcorner.com, Becton Loveless asks, “How much money is available per child? Are there any expenses the family is willing to give up to pursue private education? What are the quality schools in their city that are realistic choices for their budget? Many families can’t approach the averages listed above and need to look for schools with tuition rates below the average ” Need-based scholarships may be available and it’s never wrong to ask!

FIND AN IDEAL EDUCATIONAL PARTNER

Jessica Lyon, a former public school educator and mother of three with two kids enrolled at Summit Classical Academy, notes that school preferences can often be a reaction against or a continuance of how we were educated as children. “Because these formative years are crucial in the development of young people, there are steps that parents and guardians can take to give their child the best chance at thriving in and beyond these, nearly, first few decades of life. As the primary educators in their children’s lives, parents and guardians should first seek out an educational partner a school that has similar values and core beliefs as the family,” she says. “Choosing a school that will come alongside the family and has a mission and purpose beyond developing children that can retain knowledge is imperative While location, reputation, and curriculum should be considered, children are heavily influenced by their peers, educators, and the community that surrounds them, so families will want to be thoughtful that the partner they choose aligns at the core level Choosing a partner in the education of your child is also not a decision that is permanent for the extent of the journey.”

Preparing Your Child for Middle and High School Transitions

Transitioning from elementary to middle school and middle school to high school are some of the most stressful experiences in our children’s young lives The transitions usually mean bigger school buildings, larger student bodies, more choices and more freedom

We spoke with several veteran middle and high school educators who gave us the following advice for parents to help their children make a smooth transition into middle and high school.

Lori Kran, pedagogical director for Kindergarten through 12th grade at Shining Mountain Waldorf School, says parents need to do their research before their child makes those transitions.

“Do your research, visit and plan. Look at websites, open houses and school fairs. Also acknowledge that middle schoolers and even more so high school students are gaining more independence and need to be brought into the conversation,” Kran says. “That doesn’t necessarily

mean kids are making the decision A lot of parents go down that road where the kid rules the roost, but a child’s prefrontal cortex isn’t even fully developed until the age of 21 ”

To physically prepare, Kran recommends parents think about their child’s “habit life,” such as how many hours they are sleeping a night and their nutrition She also says to get to

12 RAISED IN THE ROCKIES SCHOOL CHOICE
Get to know the school’s culture and, especially in middle school, make sure your student has the opportunity to try everything from art class to cross country and world languages. (Photo courtesy: Shining Mountain Waldorf School) Often times it’s in middle or high school we see students identify a strength or passion and dive deep into them. (Photo courtesy: Shining Mountain Waldorf School)

“The number one thing for this age group is their relationship with their peers. As a parent, don’t be angry about it. They’re where they are developmentally for a reason. If you see that it’s a good thing.”

know the school’s culture and, especially in middle school, make sure your student has the opportunity to try everything from art class to cross country and world languages Start thinking about electives and your child’s passions

Kran says in 6th and 9th grade they actively help students learn to use their planners They even have a specific course for students to learn to fill out their planner and use it to manage their time.

“This is a great opportunity for parent cooperation. Are they bringing home their planner and accessing it? A parent could have their child keep a planner for summertime to encourage independence and accountability. Things significantly ramp up in high-school with AP classes and other opportunities Take this time to talk to your child about their options and the longterm application of them. Take your child seriously and engage them in the conversation,” Kran says

Adam DiGiacomo, high school principal of Prospect Ridge Academy, says it’s important for parents to understand the developmental progression of their students between elementary, middle and high school, and the behaviors and motivations you can expect to see change.

“While some of these things are absolutely developmentally appropriate, parents sometimes aren’t ready for that,” DiGiacomo says “As parents we have expectations that create a disconnect.”

DiGiacomo says that in elementary school kids are very driven and motivated by the adults in their lives In middle school, an imperative shift happens. Previously, influencers in kids’ lives were only adults and now they have peer influence

“It’s very normal and healthy We want this to happen Students start forming these strong bonds and relationships with their peers that become more significant as they come into high school,” DiGiacomo says “The goal at the end is to have well-adjusted young adults who are independent, motivated, driven and able to sole challenges in their own life. We need those things to happen ”

Reiterating what Kran says above, DiGiacomo says middle school is a time for children to say ‘yes’ to trying everything. “Think back to some of the passions you have as an adult You probably started some of those in middle school It’s a fantastic time and age to really try a lot of new things. Oftentimes it’s in high school we see those students identify a strength or passion and dive deep into them,” he says

Kara Crossland, school counselor at Holy Family High School, says her favorite group of students to work with are ninth graders

“It’s so fascinating to me to work with people in that transition,” she says. “The most helpful thing is for your child to get involved with many things at school ”

Crossland says the counseling department at Holy Family works hard to make sure students always have someone to eat lunch with

“The number one thing for this age group is their relationship with their peers. As a parent, don’t be angry about it. They’re where they are developmentally for a reason If you see that it’s a good thing,” Crossland says “It can be hard as a parent because you feel a kind of rejection once they’re in ninth grade. But it’s good. It’s exactly what they’re supposed to do.”

Adams 12 Five Star Schools

Community and opportunity draw families to the Five Star District

Community and opportunity draw families to choose Adams 12 Five Star Schools as a place for their children to learn, grow and excel As a child, I called the Five Star District home, and as a parent and the superintendent, I continue to value how our district and schools welcome our students and ensure no matter their strengths or needs, there’s a supportive community here for them

One of our guiding goals in Adams 12 Five Star Schools is to know every student by name, strength and need and to ensure access, opportunity and a sense of belonging for each student This is the foundation to elevating student success

Whether your child is just beginning their learning journey with us, or is embarking on their final years before graduation, there’s “a place for you” in Adams 12 Five Star Schools

This school year, we’re making additional investments in several key areas, including: the return of competitive

sports in grades 6-8, expanded career and technical education opportunities, staffing for three new programs in special education, and additional support for gifted and talented students. All of these investments align to the district’s strategic plan ELEVATE, which includes the six focus areas of 21st Century Learners, Diverse Learning, Outside-the-Classroom Learning, Safe Schools, Social Emotional Learning and World Class Staff

Competitive Sports in Grades 6-8 Our families have expressed a strong interest in competitive sports returning to our middle and K-8 schools, and we’re pleased to share that this year’s budget provides funding for this to happen The district offers cross country for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students in the fall and boys and girls basketball later in the school year.

Expanded Career and Technical Education Opportunities

Career and Technical Education, also known as FutureForward in Adams 12 Five Star Schools, continues to expand in both programming and access.

FutureForward at Bollman has added an additional Behavioral and Mental Health teacher because of high student interest and requests for the program. FutureForward at Washington Square has launched a new Sports Medicine program with science integration, as well as English courses and a Construction in Mathematics course. The Washington Square campus is also expanding staffing in their Firefighting and Welding programs in order to accommodate more students.

Special Education Staffing

The Five Star District has expanded services for students with significant impacts of autism who require more frequent and intense specialized instruction in order to meet their individual needs This includes the addition of teachers, related service staff and paraprofessionals to support students at the elementary and middle school levels.

Additional staff has also been added throughout the district, and at each level, to meet the variety of instructional, behavioral, and mental health student needs presented post-pandemic.

Additional Support for Gifted and Talented Students

With a commitment to providing equitable access to programming, the district has added Gifted & Talented Advocates (GTA) in most schools GTAs focus on accelerating student growth in the academic content areas, supporting social and emotional needs, and fostering a positive school climate and culture regarding gifted services

Advocates collaborate with principals and teacher leaders to develop and implement school-wide structures and initiatives in relation to the school’s specific GT Program Plan The GTA serves as a capacity-builder, engaging with teachers to support their instruction and classroom environment.

We’re glad to offer these opportunities for our students We look forward to welcoming you to the Five Star District We can’t wait for you to join our family!

Preparing students to Soar

Dear Prospective Students and Families,

First and foremost, thank you for considering the Boulder Valley School District!

We know that choosing a school is a big decision There is a lot to consider and we always encourage prospective students and parents to explore the many options available in our district and choose the best fit for a student

The best part in BVSD, you really cannot go wrong. All of our schools are outstanding,

You don’t have to take our word for it. According to Niche, BVSD is the best school district in the Denver Area and Northern Colorado, plus three schools in Colorado’s top 25 according to US News and World Report)

While we are proud of these accolades, our track record of preparing students for success speaks for itself. BVSD students attend the best colleges or universities in the country and are leaders in their industries and our communities. In fact, we are proud to now have three

alumni who have been to space as NASA astronauts, including Jessica Watkins (Fairview ‘06) who recently returned to Earth. We send our congratulations to her for her successful and historic visit to the International Space Station.

There is no question – BVSD is an excellent launchpad for students who want to achieve their dreams

What truly defines the Boulder Valley School District is our commitment to Excellence Through Equity. We believe that we haven’t fully succeeded until

every last BVSD student has those same opportunities to strive

That is why equity is built into GradPlus, our program that aims to ensure every student graduates from high school in BVSD with more than a diploma We are working to expand opportunities for students to earn college credit, industry certifications, work experience and bilingual certification while in high school This will ensure students have the skills and confidence to keep learning and remaining flexible throughout their careers – so they’re ready to compete in an ever-changing, evolving future.

Join a school district that is All Together for All Students.

How Family Engagement Leads to Student Success

A lifelong love of learning doesn’t begin or end in the brick-and-mortar confines of a classroom.

No matter a student’s specific interests, skill sets or learning style, they all need the right kind of encouragement and stimulation to grow. Whether it’s a kindergartener, an elementary school student, a middle schooler or a high school senior, their success in the classroom depends on support outside of the physical school building

Staff at some of the most highly rated and successful private schools in Boulder County are well aware of this key to student success Administrators, teachers and staff know that rigorous curriculum,

extracurricular activities and a full class schedule can only go so far For students to truly connect with a love of learning, they need to see a model in the behavior of parents and family members

At institutions like the Friends School, a private PK-8 school in Boulder, parent and family engagement means more than just helping students with homework. Parent Council Co-Chairs Jess Torbin and Annie Youngman help foster a culture that involves parents at all levels of learning across grade levels.

“I wanted to get to know the wonderful teachers and staff and give back to a program that has given so much to us,” Youngman said.

At schools across Boulder County,

parents and families are showing a similar stake in creating a culture of off-the-hours learning designed to encourage academic and personal success

For example, at Flagstaff Academy, a tuition-free charter school in Longmont, that modeling comes in the form of parent engagement as part of the school’s broader culture. Flagstaff’s Parent Teacher Organization was founded to ensure that students see learning and involvement outside of the school day. The PTO helps organize and operate events ranging from community dinners to parent/teacher community get-togethers.

By making sure that the entire community has a chance to get together, communicate and encourage learning

50 RAISED IN THE ROCKIES SCHOOL CHOICE

outside of the typical school day, Flagstaff Academy helps support the broader mission of the school

“Our mission is to serve the school community and promote open communication and understanding between parents and staff at Flagstaff Academy,” PTO spokespeople point out on their website. “We carry out this mission by organizing events that provide a sense of community, by providing educational outreach and experiences and by fundraising to support supplemental education and materials ”

That same kind of work has an impact at Dawson School, a private college preparatory school located in Lafayette. While top-notch academics are a big part of the philosophy at Dawson, an admission-based institution that stresses college skills and preparation, parent engagement is a key part of making that emphasis approachable for students.

According to members of Dawson’s parent association, the school’s rigorous academics are only possible because of buy-in from parents and family members. They have chances to mix and mingle with students on campus, to help find resources for teachers and staff and to show kids that learning takes place in and outside of the classroom.

Raised in the Rockies

“(Parents) are an important and valued part of the Dawson community,” Dawson association members pointed out “Being a parent or guardian of a current Dawson School student means you’re a member of the active DPA community and a welcome participant in all we do to make Dawson extraordinary.”

At Bixby School, a private school located in South Boulder, parents have a stake in many parts of the school’s operation, from read-a-thons to game nights to new parent welcoming events. All of these events supplement inclassroom learning and teaching by showing a model of engagement and investment that extends to adults and kids alike

“Volunteer parents organize fundraising and community-building events throughout the school year for Bixby,” school officials said “This enriches the learning experience for both students and faculty.”

Boulder Country Day School, a private preschool, elementary and IB middle school in Boulder, takes that philosophy a step further, offering parent/child classes for kids 2 to 4 years old and their parents, family members or caregivers These classes aim to forge that love of learning between adult and child early, featuring

story-time, hands-on art and other elements designed to build those links at an early level

Such classes, and such involvement, sets a promising foundation for future learning, one where a basis for language, literacy and lifelong learning is strong at an early age

Therapy

Ahome atmosphere can bring comfort and practicality, especially when it comes to therapy services for children.

Dan McLellan, owner/therapist with McLellan Homecare, explained that offering physical, occupational and speech/ language therapy in a natural environment offers plenty of benefits. His company serves clients from birth to age 21.

“In Colorado, especially for birth to age 3, (child therapy) services are required to be in what’s called their natural environment, which can be their home, a preschool or a church All children who qualify for early intervention services receive their services in that ‘natural environment,’” McLellan said.

Children don’t have to be homebound to receive home care services. Clients can range from those who are fully functioning who receive speech therapy to those who may need more extensive services, such as augmentative or computer-assisted therapy Although he doesn’t necessarily identify trends, McLellan said the need for varied levels of speech therapy and services for children on the autism spectrum have increased.

When therapists visit homes, children learn to complete exercises and build skills using tools and other items that are already familiar to them And sessions occur in a relaxed environment

“We use items in the home for exercise programs. We use furniture and blankets that are in the home. We use the children’s toys, their books as part of the therapy,” said McLellan.

In turn, therapists can teach parents and caregivers how to help children with those

same familiar items The idea is to ensure that the therapy provided matches the individual child and continues beyond the 45 to 60-minute weekly session

For example, McLellan shared a story where a child had been taught to use a pegboard in prior therapy, but his mother said he had never learned how to put quarters into a vending machine, which was more useful and needed for that child.

“We can work on functional activities

If a child is learning to walk with a walker in their home with their carpeting, their stairs and their rugs, we work on that We help them with balance; we are working with their couch, their bed. It’s about reallife opportunities to help the child.”

Benefits of home care extend to practicality, as well. Parents don’t have to worry about parking or finding child care for other children. And staying home can minimize exposure to illness

“A lot of our kids are on ventilators or could have Cerebral Palsy,” he said, explaining the need for limiting exposure to others

Progress is measured individually for each child. A plan of care is developed with measurable goals, and those goals are re-evaluated every 60 days McLellan said therapists always check with parents to make sure the plan of care meets their goals

Referrals for early intervention therapy services come from county community center boards, from physicians, from social services for foster children and from other county programs for children with special needs. Home health agencies often refer to each other to make sure families are served appropriately

Services may be covered by insurance or Medicaid if ordered by a doctor. In turn, a plan of care is reviewed by doctors every 60 days.

“We really try to cater to each child individually Kids might have the same diagnosis, but it could look differently And parents have different goals. We try to fulfill those needs the best possible way”

Moving with Kids?

How to learn about the schools in your new area

Front Range families are lucky to have the flexibility of school choice, but where you live still impacts your school options because of the obvious issue of commuting to drop kids off and pick them up, morning and afternoon “You can pick the school in your neighborhood, or another public school if there’s room (open enrollment) and we also have lots of charter and private school options,” says Cindy Montgomery, Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty in Longmont. All this choice is a good thing – but it can also make the task of learning about your options seem daunting

Here are some tips for collecting all the information you need about various neighborhoods and the schools in them so you can make the best decision about where to move with your family.

WORK WITH THE RIGHT AGENT

When shopping for a new home, it’s crucial that you find a realtor who has the experience and knowledge you need “Work with a neighborhood expert, one who sells more than one or two homes a year in the neighborhood,” says realtor Steve Altermatt “They may have information on homes that are not yet on the open market and have data going back years that can demonstrate the pros and cons of investing in various locations and types of properties.” If you’ve had an eye on a certain area, find an agent who knows that area and can give you honest details about the schools without you having to do any digging or deep research

“Partnering with a well-informed, local realtor and community expert is key,” says Orly Ripmaster, Front Range market president for Slifer, Smith & Frampton real estate. “Often local realtors have children of their own or those of their clients that attend the local schools and are usually very involved with the community and the school districts ”

FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH THE MANY INVALUABLE ONLINE RESOURCES

You’re certainly not alone in wanting to learn about the schools in your area. There have been parents in your exact

shoes before, so answers have naturally cropped up on the internet. There are plenty of online resources for learning more about your area’s schools. Some of the best websites at your disposal are greatschools org, which provides clear analysis and ratings of schools across the US, and niche.com, a similar rating tool with a comparison feature Montgomery also recommends schoolview org and schooldigger.com. District websites like bvsd.org also offer plenty of information to help in your decision making.

IDENTIFY WHAT’S IMPORTANT FOR YOUR FAMILY

Rankings can only go so far in identifying a school that’s a good fit for your child and your family – that’s why it’s important to go into your move with an idea of what you’d like in a perfect school. “It’s important when shopping for properties with school-aged children that you are doing your own research and not solely relying on the online, algorithm-based rankings,” says Ripmaster. “While those are valuable tools, understanding the community, extracurriculars and activities offered and ways to get involved in the community play such an impactful and

positive role in the school selection process that having a local expert to ask questions is a critical component.”

Are language immersion programs important for you? What about sports and extracurriculars? You’ll also want to consider more general factors like class sizes and the education level of teachers and staff. Create a basic list of questions about schools in your area before you get too deep into your search

NOTHING BEATS AN IN-PERSON VISIT

“They should visit the schools they are considering,” says Montgomery. “Talk to the teachers and staff there and other parents ” In-person school visits from prospective parents and students are almost always welcome by the schools, who are eager to expand their enrollment and help families learn about what they offer

“Post-pandemic, tours are available again and highly recommended,” says Ripmaster. “For those moving from out of town, asking the schools for parents who they can contact or making connections via social media platforms is valuable ” Contact the school you’re interested in and schedule a visit or learn about their open houses.

things like quality of interactions, such as shouting directions versus inviting participation, and opportunities for outdoor learning and immersion in nature, she said

“For parents when visiting centers, they should put themselves in the shoes of the child to see the space and interactions,” Benson May said.

Apple Tree Christian Preschool and Kindergarten, founded in 1999 and located inside Broomfield United Methodist Church, offers half-day, extended day and flexible daily rate programs for children ages 2.5 years old to kindergarten. The program follows a Christian curriculum and is play-based with a strong focus on social-emotional development.

What to Look For in a Preschool

If you decide to enroll your child in preschool, there are a few key things to consider to find the right program and environment.

Four Boulder County preschools weigh in on what makes for quality early childhood education, so that children are ready to enter kindergarten loving school. Preschool provides children with pre-kindergarten academic skills, but also gives them an opportunity to learn through play, build fine motor skills and receive positive discipline.

“Parents should look for a program that is well-rounded and puts as much emphasis in social-emotional development as academic or cognitive development,” said Amy French-Troy, development and communications manager for the TLC Learning Center in Longmont.

The TLC Learning Center, founded in 1956 as the Tiny Tim Learning Center for children with cerebral palsy, provides educational and therapeutic services for special need and typical students. Currently there are 70 students, ages six weeks up to kindergarten readiness, at all income levels, abilities, races and backgrounds

“Kids are learning how to do school

at that age,” French-Troy said. “They’re learning how to do things in preschool for K-12.”

French-Troy recommends researching a school by checking its curriculum online, asking about the school population and requesting a tour of the building

“Every kid has different needs where school is concerned,” French-Troy said “What might be a good fit for one kid may not be for another. Do your research and make sure you’re getting a good vibe of what the place is all about.”

Treehouse Learning, founded in 1997 in Louisville, offers play-based learning through a whole-person curriculum that incorporates movement, music, art, language and culture with learning happening in the context of relationships and interactions with the world

“These are the experiences that lead to optimal brain development,” said Amy Benson May, owner and executive leader of Treehouse Learning “We support whole-person development and integration through intentional responses and respectful experiences.”

When looking for a preschool, Benson May recommends paying attention to the educational environment and opportunities for children to engage with the learning materials and people around them, she said The environment includes

Sara Godwin, director of Apple Tree, recommends parents ask for a school tour, meet with staff and observe classes in session to see how teachers interact with students. Other things to consider are the level of parental involvement and the operation of the school as a for-profit or a nonprofit, which typically pays higher wages and has lower turnover rates

“Parents need to ask about the school philosophy and make sure the philosophy of the school gels with their personal interests,” Godwin said

Kohl Street Kids, a Broomfield-based nonprofit preschool and before- and afterschool program founded in 1995, has an academic and social-emotional focus with a whole-child approach

“The most important thing is that they should look for a place they trust where everyone is treated with respect and dignity,” said Elizabeth Arneson, director of Kohl Street Kids. “They should look for a center where families can be included and there’s a partnership. … For us, it’s more of everybody’s included in the children’s goals.”

Boulder Valley School District offers a preschool program for children ages 3-4 through the Colorado Preschool Program, the Special Education Program and the tuition program at 19 schools within the district. Early childhood education follows a creative curriculum focused on the whole child, a strong foundation on socialemotional skills and learning academics through play.

“One of the most important things is that there is an environment where the child feels safe and secure,” said Theresa Clements, director of early childhood education at BVSD “There’s positive interactions between teachers and the child and among children Having positive relationships helps them feel safe and secure, so they build that strong foundation by being able to engage in the classroom and being curious about their environment

Fun Ways to Keep Kids Active All Winter

The winter season may bring a reprieve for active Colorado families. But too much unproductive time isn’t what all kids want or need Here are some creative ways to inspire play in your children as temperatures cool down and the holidays ramp up.

TRY,TRY,TRY AT THE Y! The best thing about the YMCA of

Northern Colorado is the fun is up to you. “The Y offers tons of opportunities for kiddos to stay active as the weather gets cold,” says Executive Director of Communications Andra Coberly Webster Court sports are the name of the game this time of year. The Y offers basketball and volleyball throughout Boulder and Weld counties as well as Sports of All Sorts, a mini sports sampler for the littlest athletes “These programs allow kids to get out their winter wiggles, build a foundation of sports skill and athleticism, and learn about teamwork and sportsmanship,” she says.

Better yet, when school is out, the Y is in session. During Thanksgiving and winter breaks, full-day School Day Off Camps for school-age children feature swimming or ice skating, crafts and STEM projects, games and active time, and more Coberly Webster says winter is also a great time for swim lessons. “Lessons in the winter allow swimmers to maintain and build upon skills they learned over the summer”

teaches toddlers and preschoolers and their parents fundamental music skills through interactive games, musical crafts, and voice exploration. “Your child will develop their capacity to work in a team, cooperate, and grow their imagination,” explains Outreach Coordinator Bridget Ryan “Children can explore different instruments, which in turn, primes them for more focused musical study as they get older.”

Class activities range from exploring rhythm and making patterns to learning song structures and dynamics and improving auditory focus and listening skills “You and your child will have the opportunity to nurture both halves of the brain, explore all areas of holistic development, and increase self-esteem in a supportive learning environment,” says Ryan.

The Perfect Fit

Local experts provide expertise and the right gear to help your child excel in youth and high school activities.

If you can get special attention to have your children’s shoes fitted perfectly, why wouldn’t you?

There are two places in the area that do not settle for the one-size-fits-everyone concept. At Brown’s Shoe Fit in Longmont and Boulder Body Wear in Lafayette, fitting shoes for children, youth and high school activity is priority one. The people who work at each of these businesses have the training and take the time to fit each young person’s shoes individually

Jason Wetzel of Brown’s Shoe Fit has the philosophy that “everything starts at the feet ” He said, “If the shoes don’t fit, it’s not a conducive environment for body mechanics ” The Brown’s Shoe Fit Longmont staff is trained to sit down with young people and devote the time and effort to help get them going in the right direction.

“We ask parents to bring their kids in with the socks they’re going to wear with the shoes. We take the age of the young person into the selection of the shoes we recommend If they’re younger, they grow faster so we might offer them a size up It’s very important that we get it right Whether they are in competitive activities or casual, we need to do a really good job of measurement and we make sure the performance of the shoe fits what they need so kids can excel in their activities.” They have a selection of brands like New Balance and Saucony, both really good manufacturers that are reliable and of high quality.

Wetzel and the staff never mind taking time with each young person who comes in He said, “We are always excited to have parents bring their kids in so we can fit them and get the proper shoe for their desired activity”

Amy Kenney, owner of Boulder Body Wear, has developed relationships with area schools to make sure the shop has the shoes that are required for sports and activities. One of their most impressive specialties, though, is fitting pointe shoes.

Kenney said they take fitting very seriously and can spend from 20 minutes to an hour doing a fitting. “There has never been a healthier time to be a ballet dancer,” she said. “Shoes have evolved

immensely over the last 10 to 15 years. There has been a lot of change in how to fit shoes to make sure dancers stay healthy at different stages ”

The box of the pointe shoe, which cups the toes and provides the platform upon which the dancer goes en pointe, is a buildup of layers of burlap, cardboard, and paper glued together The inner sole, or shank, is traditionally made of leather The rest of the shoe consists of canvas, satin, and a tanned leather or suede outsole.

Kenney said that the life of a pointe shoe can be about 30 hours of wear She feels so strongly that it is important for dancers to have healthy shoes that she will even provide discounts or bulk buys to help customers buy them. “We may have lost

a little money by doing that sometimes, but we have gained something somewhere else,” she said. “We have been in business since 1987 and that has given us building blocks to serve customers regionally or fly to do fittings ” They also have added virtual toe shoe fittings. “We share our knowledge and work to meet people’s needs,” she said

Boulder Body Wear has a core group of customers from ages 11 to 17 Kenney sees a lot of students who are finding out where they fit into dance and activities.

“There is so much more to dance than just dancing,” Kenney said. “It’s a wonderful thing to be a part of and we get to enhance that and make what we do something that works for them.”
