INTRODUCTION 57th Annual Colorado Farm Show Written by Eric Brown, Colorado Farm Show

A CELEBRATION OF AMERICA’S ESSENTIAL BUSINESS

I

n addition to serving as a setting for education and great dialogue, the Colorado Farm Show each year is as much as anything a celebration of the people in agriculture.

That being the case, our state’s farmers, ranchers and other ag industry representatives are as worthy as ever of praise this year, following a 2020 and 2021 that saw so much of the world forced to shut down, while our food and fiber producers continued answering the call. While so many other staples of normalcy were riddled with uncertainty over the past couple years, there remained enough to eat on people’s plates during these precarious times. We learned a great deal about which businesses and industries are truly “essential,” and our ag producers rightfully took their place alongside healthcare workers, law enforcement officers and others in this extremely select group.

It pains us that it took so long to deliver this gratitude in-person, as we couldn’t do so at a 2021 version of the Farm Show, since that event, like much of the world, fell victim to COVID. But here we are now, so “thank you.” And it probably goes without saying; It’s so nice to see you all again. As part of expressing our appreciation for what you do and our excitement for having you all back under our roof, we’ve assembled a 57th edition of the Colorado Farm Show we believe will be well worth your while. We’ve developed educational seminars that will dive into some of the most pertinent issues

and the latest innovations in an ever-changing industry.

This year’s breakout sessions will cover topics such as commodity and market outlooks, weather and climate forecasts, and policy updates to help you better prepare for the rest of 2022.

Experts from various ag sectors will be on hand to examine innovations, technologies, production techniques, changing demographics, supply-chain trends and evolving consumer preferences to provide a window into the industry beyond this year. Ongoing Colorado River challenges and regional supply projects and collaborations will be discussed to keep farmers up-to-speed on the most critical of all resources to the industry: water.

And to make sure farms and ranches can be handed down to the next generation – so those operations can continue driving the state’s $40 billion industry that employs about 175,000 people and helps feed and clothe millions more – sessions will address sustainability, stewardship, support programs, and risk-management and planning tools. In addition to our breakout sessions, we also encourage attendees to engage with the hundreds of vendors who will be on hand – many of whom come from miles away but still place the Farm Show on their annual “must attend list.” The Colorado Farm Show Board would like to thank all of you who are attending or participating in this year’s event, and ask that you join us, as we always do, in embracing all things ag, and in also saying “thanks” again to those help make up one of America’s truly “essential businesses.”

WINDOW ON AGRICULTURE LONGMONT DAIRY FARM not only brings fresh milk to the doorstep, but also will provide much of the perishable grocery list for its customers. “By delivering these items, it helps customers have their staples on a regular basis, so they don’t have to go to the grocery store,” said Katie Herrmann, co-owner of Longmont Diary Farm with her brother, Dan Boyd.

Herrmann and Boyd are third-generation owners of Longmont Dairy Farm, a homedelivery company founded in 1965 that serves the Front Range and parts of the Denver metro area. The milk comes fresh from the 500 cows on the farm and is delivered overnight, so that customers get their milk within roughly 48 hours. The cows are fed locally grown, high-quality feed that doesn’t have any supplemental rBST growth hormone. Their milk is bottled at the local dairy in glass bottles, giving it a fresh, old-fashioned

The farm makes a long list of other products that includes whipping cream, orange juice, and flavored milks such as chocolate, strawberry and orange cream, as well as brews tea and cold brew coffee through a partnership with Silver Canyon Coffee out of Boulder. The farm has additional partnerships with local vendors to deliver items like bread, eggs, yogurt, bagels and cream cheese, meal kits and cookie dough. “With declining milk consumption, we started adding more and more products,” Herrmann said. “We’re trying to be innovative and continue to grow to provide customers more options if we’re going to be stopping at their doorstep anyway.”

AG OUTLOOK & STRATEGY FORUM Events Center Room A 9 - 10:45 a.m. Crop and Livestock Outlook Dr. Steve Koontz, Colorado State University Stephen Koontz is a Professor in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at Colorado State University. The outlook for grain, forage and livestock commodity prices are strong for 2022 and there is evidence that the strength will persist for several years. Shocks to supply in the last half of 2020 and strong international demand into 2021 have created an opportunistic market for Colorado grain and forage producers. The outlook for cattle and beef markets suggests a longer road to recovery but there is also substantial optimism in the long run for protein product markets. An assessment of the commodity markets will be offered, as well as macroeconomy, and practical strategies for price risk management and forward pricing will be discussed.

WINDOW ON AGRICULTURE Weather doesn’t have to hinder hobbies or work, anymore. Local family-owned and operated M AND M HEATING AND COOLING, PLUMBING AND ELECTRICAL, has been serving Longmont and surrounding areas since 1998, keeping Coloradoans working through the heat and the cold.

called a mini-split, the Carrier Ductless System splits off the from the main furnace to a smaller, ductless one on the wall. It’s another, more cost-effective option to heat and cool spaces.

Whether it’s a shop, work space, outdoor building, garage or warehouse, M and M’s Modine Hot Dawg and Carrier Ductless Systems can create the perfect climate-controlled environment for all your endeavors, agriculture based or otherwise.

“We’re the first company in Northern Colorado to offer a test drive. If you’re not satisfied, we come in, take it down and provide a refund,” says Lucarelli.

“We’re an in-house, one-stop-shop solution for all your heating, cooling, plumbing and electrical needs,” says Chris Lucarelli, vice president. “We offer a variety of solutions for our customers’ needs.”

“We know work doesn’t stop for the cold,” says Lucarelli. “Animals have to be cared for, equipment has to be worked on and hobbies are still our hobbies, even on the coldest days of winter and the hottest days of summer.” M and M’s varying sizes and BTU output in Modine Hot Dawg and Carrier Ductless Systems means it’s likely there is an application to fit your need.

“From a single car garage to a large space, we have something for you. With these systems you can position them almost anywhere you want. There’s no duct work required. We just hang it and go. It’s generally a same-day, oneday install and not a huge process. It’s a cost-effective option compared to running duct work,” says Lucarelli. If trying to heat or cool smaller, more split-up rooms, the carrier ductless system may be a good option. Also

Not sure you’re ready to make the purchase? If you think you’re fine wearing two pairs of gloves while you work in your shop, think again. M and M offers a one-year test drive on qualifying equipment, so you can feel comfortable test-driving equipment without getting stuck with it if it turns out you miss your gloves.

M and M carries top-of-the-line equipment, working with preferred brands, including being a Carrier Factory Authorized Dealer and Presidents Club Award Winner. Beyond great equipment, M and M has a quick-response time, working with a fully-staffed, year-round crew of NATE Certified technicians, including an emergency service technician available 24/7. The company provides services in the agriculture industry, working with shops, work spaces, outbuildings, garages and warehouses, offering heating and cooling services, ductless systems, electrical panel upgrades and landscape and exterior lighting, as well as custom packages. “We have developed a loyal following because of our attention to detail, quality, customer service and training, which is something we never want to lose sight of,” says Lucarelli.

“We don’t just build to meet minimum building codes. We have our own standards and our own engineered designs that make for a sturdier building rated for heavy snow and wind conditions,” said Linda Young-Vap, coowner of Vap Construction. “And we take the time to design the building with our customers so that they are aesthetically pleasing as well.”

Based in Atwood, Kan., Vap Construction is a family-owned, general contracting company specializing in post-frame and steel-frame buildings for agricultural, commercial, equine and residential use. With more than 25 years in the industry, the company works with farming and ranching communities in Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska and Kansas, constructing anything from calving barns and riding arenas to farm shops and residential garages. “We can literally build just about any type of building, but what we’re really known for is the quality of our buildings,” Young-Vap said. “We aren’t intimidated by the strict building codes in the Front Range, because we only build the highest quality buildings anyway. Our structures often use up to 25 percent more lumber than our competitors because of their design, and we don’t cut corners.”

Vap Construction works with each of its clients to make sure the buildings it designs and builds are both functional and beautiful, either matching the other structures on the customer’s property or designing a statement piece that will stand out all on its own. VAP CONSTRUCTION, INC. 605 North 10th Atwood, KS 866.492.1978 vapconstruction.com

Accredited by the National Frame Building Association, the company is continually investing in training and education to stay up-to-date on the latest trends and building practices. The company also is licensed to build in areas that some other builders are not. “Our work speaks for itself, but we have lots of customer testimonials on our website and on Google that we invite property owners to read before they shop around,” Young-Vap said. “We have a strong reputation, and we stand behind our work.”

WINDOW ON AGRICULTURE RANCHERS CAN REJUVENATE THEIR RANGELAND FOR THE LONG-HAUL WITH BAYER’S REJUVRA More than 10 years ago, BAYER RANGE AND PASTURE, part of Bayer AG, set out for a solution to combat devastating invasive plant species like cheatgrass. These parasitic invasive annual grasses result in reduced forage quantity and quality, cutting significantly into the bottom line for ranchers in the western United States.

of desirable perennials are present. This tool provides the first opportunity to target the invasive grass seed bank and take back your rangeland.”

“With this new tool you can get up to four years of cheatgrass control with just one application, allowing you to deplete the invasive grass soil seed bank and increase long-term restoration success,” said Dr. Derek Sebastian, Bayer Range and Pasture field territory manager covering Colorado and Wyoming.

• I ncreased forage quality and quantity: Areas treated with Rejuvra have demonstrated on average a 3.5x increase* in perennial plant production compared to nontreated areas.

The result? Rejuvra, a restoration herbicide designed for the long haul. It features a unique mode of action that provides long-lasting control of invasive annual grasses and broadleaf weed species including cheatgrass, medusahead, ventenata and Japanese brome.

Over 100 unbiased research trials for Rejuvra took place at more than eight universities in the west, including Colorado State University and University of Wyoming, said Sebastian, who has been involved in the research and development of Rejuvra beginning as a doctoral student at CSU. Launched in 2020, Rejuvra not only controls cheatgrass — which covers 50 million acres in the western U.S — but other invasive winter annual grass and broadleaf weeds as well. All with one application.

BAYER RANGE AND PASTURE Derek Sebastian 970-646-2816

derek.sebastian@ bayer.com

“The issue in the past was that a lot of ranchers and agencies were giving up hope in preventing cheatgrass because other products available for control were inconsistent and often provided only a single year of control,” Sebastian said. “There was no tool that gave longevity.” Until Rejuvra that is.

“Restoration activities such as reseeding are expensive and difficult. The best time to control invasive annual grasses is when viable populations

50 | COLORADO FARM SHOW 2022

What are the benefits of rangeland restoration with Rejuvra?

• I mproved utilization of natural resources: Every year, cheatgrass and other invasive annual grasses grow rapidly in late winter, stealing precious water and nutrients while the perennial grasses, forbs and shrubs are still dormant. Rejuvra removes these grasses, freeing up resources for the more desirable perennial plants.

• I ncreased forage quality: Removal of cheatgrass with Rejuvra results in improved forage quality. With improved quality, less forage is consumed per pound of gain. This greatly reduces the grazing pressure on the entire ecosystem and increases overall rangeland health.

• I ncreased ranch efficiency: Improved forage production and quality promotes better livestock distribution, extends the grazing season and reduces supplemental feed costs. With the removal of moisture-robbing annual grasses, cattle can now increase their water consumption by two to three gallons per day through the perennial forage they consume. • D ecreased wildfire risk: Every year, cheatgrass dies in late spring into summer, adding fine fuel at the same time that wildfire threatens. Rejuvra stops the cycle by targeting the annual grass seed bank. This greatly reduces the threat of wildfire. • F orage response is variable and dependent on individual site conditions. Individual investment results may vary.

WINDOW ON AGRICULTURE As NORTHERN FEED AND BEAN celebrates its 70th year in business it is bridging the gap between the strength of the past and growth for the future. Northern Bean and Feed is dedicated to helping local bean growers and livestock producers in Colorado, Wyoming and Nebraska. “There are two sides of our business. And it’s in the name: feed and bean,” says Jay Ewald of Northern Feed and Bean. “I came in when the business was turning a chapter. We’re leveraging 70 years of legacy while moving on to the next chapter. We’re revamping our corporate image from yesteryear to something fresh.” The company has spent decades perfecting operations to provide the best feed and bean for grower’s operations. Their bean services included certified Pinto and Mayocoba bean seed, contracting for new crops, field advisory services, processing, storing and marketing. Northern Feed and Bean provides feed, not only for large scale rancher and producers, but also for companion animals and show livestock. The feed program is a full-line Purina dealer, has on-site feed specialists, serves all species of livestock and is dedicated to providing quality and value.

Ewald says he discovered the three pillars Northern Feed and Bean was built on when he joined the business. The first thing he noticed was quality. “Whether it’s the quality of our beans or our service, quality is in the fiber of what we do. We provide quality service and seed to our growers, quality feed and quality service to customers,” says

58 | COLORADO FARM SHOW 2022

Ewald. “There’s quality when it comes to the people we deal with, too. Our employees, customers and growers are all quality.” Secondly, Ewald says he saw trust in every business relationship the company had. “Trust is the basis of the relationship with our growers and customers. It’s a handshake. It has been and will remain that,” says Ewald. “We have very little employee or grower turnover. Our retention is incredibly high because of the tremendous level of trust between everyone.” The third pillar of the business is its family culture. “We’re a company that feels like family,” says Ewald. “I came in with one more pillar, and that’s growth. We’re going to grow organically and in a smart way. We’re looking for additional highquality growers. We’re solidifying and taking care of existing customers while growing each year.” Following that growth mindset, Northern Feed and Bean is moving to a new retail location at 230 1st St. in Ault. “It will help better meet and exceed the customer expectations for fast and friendly service,” Ewald says. The company is also launching a new website in January that will be a full e-commerce site. “It will create additional reach for our retail feed and bean customers,” he says. “This will allow a customer to order product online, stop in and pick up their order with super-fast and friendly service.”

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR 57th Annual Colorado Farm Show Written by Eric Brown, Colorado Farm Show

RONNIE ACKERMAN

S

etting up one of the biggest draws each year at the Colorado Farm Show requires a great deal of planning, collaboration and steady hands to steer it all into place.

Enter Ronnie Ackerman, who plays a critical but behindthe-scenes role in helping navigate and place the millions of dollars of latest-and-greatest farm equipment put on display at the event. “It sometimes takes a couple tries to get everything staged just the way each of the vendors wants it, but we get it done,” Ackerman said of himself and the rest of the Farm Equipment Committee that unloads and sets up the Farm Show’s dozens of tractors, combines and implements, as well as the outdoor exhibits. Moving all of that equipment into place with precision and attention to detail comes naturally to Ackerman, who, in addition to farming in the LaSalle area, runs an excavating company, installs irrigation lines and ponds, and sells center-pivots. It was his background and involvement in the bigmachinery world that first brought him to the Farm Show, where years ago he began setting up shop as a vendor to promote his various businesses. Then about 10 years ago, he was approached by Farm Show organizers about putting his hands-on experience and expertise to use for the event, and he’s remained onboard in his Farm Equipment Committee capacity ever since. In addition to volunteering his time to handle and maneuver the display equipment into place, Ackerman also contributes his own machinery to help get the job done. While donating such resources could be tough for a time-strapped owner of numerous business enterprises,

62 | COLORADO FARM SHOW 2022

Ackerman said volunteering for the Farm Show is something he’ll continue penciling in on his calendar. “I make it around to a lot of other shows, but this is just one of the very best,” said Ackerman, who grew up around Loveland, where his parents used to farm, before moving to the LaSalle area to start up his own operations. “It’s just a really well-run show,” added Ackerman, who has ancestors that first arrived in Northern Colorado from Russia back in 1904 to provide labor for the local sugar beet industry. “People really care about it, and you can tell. It’s something I definitely enjoy being a part of and plan to stay a part of.” And Farm Show organizers are plenty content to keep Ronnie around a while. “He’s just a great guy, and always the first one to jump in and help if there’s ever a problem,” said Brad Craven, who serves as chair of the Farm Show’s Farm Equipment Committee. “He’s always willing to do anything.”

TRIBUTES

57th Annual Colorado Farm Show Written by Eric Brown, Colorado Farm Show

W

e sadly had to say “good-bye” to a few close friends of the Colorado Farm Show in 2021. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with their loved ones, and we once again thank the families of Brian, Jack and Audrey for allowing them to contribute their time and energy to the Farm Show during their lifetimes. This event is no doubt better because of them.

BRIAN ALLMER devoted his life to a wide variety of causes that benefitted Colorado’s agriculture industry, and the Colorado Farm Show was incredibly fortunate to be on that list.

Prior to his untimely passing on Aug. 26, 2021, Brian had served as the Colorado Farm Show’s Marketing Committee Chair, a role in which he went above and beyond to promote our event through his own BARN Media radio channels, as well as through numerous other print, digital and person-toperson collaborations. In particular, Brian was an adamant supporter and promotor of the Farm Show’s scholarship program. And Brian’s contributions to the Farm Show go beyond even that, as he was always willing to take on any “other duties as assigned” to support the event he loved so much.

In addition to his Farm Show involvement and being an ag radio trailblazer with BARN Media, Brian, who spent most of his 55 years on the family farm near Briggsdale, devoted his life to numerous other ag- and youth-focused causes, such as the Colorado FFA Foundation, Colorado 4H Foundation, Denver Ag & Livestock Club, Weld County Fair Board, Briggsdale FFA Advisory Council, and the Briggsdale 4H Club, just to name a few.

BRIAN ALMER

66 | COLORADO FARM SHOW 2022

The only thing Brian might have had as much passion for as agriculture and his faith was people; you could always count on the warmest of greetings when bumping into Brian at the Farm Show or elsewhere.

www.coloradofarmshow.com

The presence of the Colorado Young Farmers Educational Association at the Farm Show dates back longer than many of the event’s organizers and attendees have been alive, and the foundation of that partnership is owed to a dear friend we lost in 2021.

JACK ANNAN, who passed away in April at the age of 87, was instrumental in organizing the Colorado Young Farmers Educational Association back in 1970, and he made sure from the get-go that the group had a booth at the Farm Show. Going on to serve as the CYFEA executive secretary until 2015, Jack would be a Farm Show fixture for decades to come. It’s believed by many that this is the first Farm Show Jack will have missed in about 50 years.

JACK ANNAN

Born and raised on an irrigated farm near LaSalle, Jack devoted his life to numerous agricultural and educational purposes. After serving as a vocational and FFA instructor in New Raymer and Grover, Jack went to Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colo., in 1966 as an instructor in the agriculture department. Affectionately known as "Mr. NJC," Jack taught in full-time and part-time capacities until 2002, and he remained active in other roles with the college and its alumni association all the way up until his passing.

Jack’s extensive involvement in other ag and educational organizations earned him inductions into the Colorado Vocational Association Hall of Fame, Colorado Agriculture Hall of Fame, NJC Agriculture Hall of Fame, and the Colorado State University Agriculture and Resource Economics Hall of Fame, among many other lifetime honors.

AUDREY BURBRIDGE The Colorado Farm Show family was deeply saddened this fall by the passing of one of its enthusiastic committee members.

AUDREY BURBRIDGE of Greeley died at the age of 66, but not before devoting much-appreciated time and energy to our Special Events Committee during the past few years. The Farm Show no doubt benefitted from Audrey’s contributions.

Aside from her Farm Show role and involvement elsewhere, Audrey – a Greeley-native, who lived in Iowa and other Colorado communities before eventually returning back home to Weld County – operated her own massage-therapy business. Described as a very spiritual person, she also spent a great deal of time outdoors in the mountains, traveling, and spending time with her sons and six grandchildren.

WINDOW ON AGRICULTURE As Greeley-based equipment dealership 4RIVERS EQUIPMENT expanded operations outside of Colorado, its old name no longer was a fit. The company had grown into three other states with major rivers crucial to the agricultural communities it serves— the Rio Grande, the Platte and the Arkansas, plus the Colorado River in its home state.

“After careful thought, the name 4Rivers Equipment became our new name,” as stated on the website.

The company, which has been serving Colorado farmers with John Deere equipment since 1926, started out as Colorado Equipment, then became Colorado Machinery. The company expanded from a local distributor of agricultural equipment to a regional distributor in Wyoming, New Mexico and Texas with 30 locations—two are in Greeley, one is in Fort Collins and one in Longmont.

With that growth came more product lines and more industries, though 4Rivers’ core product line remained John Deere, a Moline, Ill.-based manufacturer of agricultural and other types of machinery. The company distributes more than 200 products for John Deere, alongside equipment and machinery for the farm and agriculture, compact and general construction, home and ranch, forestry, road building and commercial mowing industries. The company’s core specialties though remained construction and agriculture products. 4RIVERS EQUIPMENT 924 11th St. Greeley, CO 970.313.2559

4riversequipment.com

“4Rivers Equipment was built on the principle that partnership is the key to offering superior products and services to the regions that they operate within,” said Hunter Barlow, marketing coordinator for 4Rivers Equipment in Greeley. “The

70 | COLORADO FARM SHOW 2022

combination of their experience, culture and focus on customer service has resulted in 4Rivers Equipment becoming one of the most widely respected John Deere dealers in the country. The steady growth in sales, rentals, parts and service is a direct reflection of the loyalty of the customers they cater to.”

The company operates according to its four values, those of integrity; respect for customers, employees and manufacturers; commitment to being the best working partner for customers and as the employer of choice; and innovation by employing innovative ideas that benefit customers and employees.

“4Rivers has a few core beliefs that help define its culture,” Hunter said. “First, customers are taken care of during the sales process and, more importantly, after the sale. Parts and service support are bedrock principles.” The company also invests millions of dollars in training, tooling and its parts inventory to keep each community it serves as a focal point.

“Perhaps the most critical key to 4Rivers’ success is that they give each location’s management team the ability and authority to make the best decision at the local level,” Hunter said. “They trust that nobody knows the areas they serve better than the citizens that live in it, and they want to live in and learn from those communities.” The company sees itself as a working partner with each of its customers.

“Committed to being your working partner, we work to support you with integrity and respect. Our goal is to provide you with innovative solutions for your home, farm or business,” as stated on the website.
