In Loving Memory Adam Rozell

Adam arrived home January 10, 2018, he was greeted by his Lord and Savior Jesus, his older brother Nathan, grandpa’s Frank and Richard, his Aunt Lila and Uncle Louie along with many other family member’s including his pets Ginger and Tiny.

Adam always loved the morning sunshine with a cup of coffee it was his favorite time of day. His favorite hobby was bowling and had learned a lot from his friend Ector Rodriguez about the sport.

Adam took great pride a few years ago in working toward his apprenticeship in Iron Working and had always hoped to follow in his dad and grandpa Rozell’s footsteps. Adam worked very hard to always be the very best at anything he did and would excel in doing so.

Adam had a heart bigger than this world could hold. The world is a better place because of him and heaven is rejoicing in his arrival. Adam had faith in our Lord that was unwavering even in the most difficult times. His hope was in Jesus and he shared that with many that knew him we can only hope to have the kind of faith that he had in Jesus.

Adam always was the kind of person that would give you the shirt off his back and his very last dime never expecting anything in return. He loved his family with all his heart and would always say “I will love you forever.” Adam we love you, your memory and your light will shine here on earth and in heaven forever. No words can describe the love, happiness and joy you brought to our lives.

Until we all meet again there is no doubt that Adam will be preparing a place in heaven for his dad Kay, his mom Tina, brother Aaron & (Sierra) and sister Tahnee & (Mike) along with his grandma Carol and grandparent’s Wayne and Beverly and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Adam had just became an uncle to baby Nathan born December 14, 2017 who will have a very special angel watching over him always.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Harwood Chapel, 516 N. 10th Street, Cañon City, Colorado on Wednesday, January 10th, at 10:00 A.M. Arrangements entrusted to Harwood Funeral Home.

Ruby Irene Connors (Horner)

Ruby Irene Connors (Horner), 66, of Cañon City passed away while visiting family in Germany on December 25th, 2017. She was born in Cloquet, MN on May 25th 1951 to Maybelle and James Horner.

Ruby ventured to Colorado in 2004 with her loving husband Robert N. Connors, after living in Alaska for over 25 years.

While in Alaska she was the proud owner of Ruby’s Café and several other businesses.

She is survived by her loving children, Holly Connors, Terry Connors, Robert K. Connors, Candy McCall, Wayne Eacker, and Jimmy Eacker; several grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, brother (Carl Horner), and husband.

Graveside service will be held at Lakeside Cemetery on Friday, January 19, 2018, at 1030.

Arrangements are being made by the family.

Donald Leroy Welch

Donald Leroy Welch of Boulder, Colorado, formerly of Cañon City, Colorado, died December 30, 2017, at Boulder Community Hospital, of heart failure.

Born January 8, 1947, to Jessie Mae (Chandler) Welch and Ulysses Michael Welch of Cañon City, Don grew up in Cañon City, graduating from Cañon City High in 1965.

After graduation Don moved with his twin brother David to Boulder to attend the University of Colorado.

Don married Cindy Ingalls (deceased) in 1968 and in those tumultuous times enlisted in the Army. He served for three years, including service in Vietnam. He was discharged in 1972, whereupon he moved to Minnesota and he and Cindy had two children, Stephen and Nacole.

In 1979 Don moved back to Boulder, where he worked with his brother and sister-in-law, Cheryl, operating a restaurant called “The Royal Gorge.” In 1983 Don married Karen “Kelly” Keatley of Boulder; they were happily married for thirty-three years.

Upon the sale of the restaurant in 1984 Don went to work for Boulder County. Later he and his wife owned and operated a commercial cleaning business, D&K cleaning, until his retirement.

Don is survived by his wife, Kelly Keatley, his sons Stephen Welch and Octavian Keatley Welch of Boulder, daughter Nacole Wagner (Frank), of Longmont, stepdaughter Sheri Anderson of Boulder, mother Jessie Mae Welch, of Cañon City, currently living in Boulder, brothers David Welch (Cheryl), of Boulder, and Dan Welch (Mari), of Broomfield, Colorado, sister Colleen Lewis, of Centennial, Colorado, grand-children Keyllan Bearss, Trey and Raegan Anderson, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his father, Ulysses Michael Welch, and his sister, Catherine Welch.

Don will be held close to the hearts of all who knew him as an honorable, intelligent, gentle, and loving man.

There will be a private grave-side service at Fort Logan National Cemetery at a later date.

Joseph Gerald Iacobelli

Joe transitioned from this life

January 10, 2018 at his home, in the care of his sister and an amazing group of caregivers who became like family to us.

Joe was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on October 30, 1933 to Josephine and Emilio Iacobelli.

He was stoic on the outside but had a heart of gold and an open door to anyone in need, fourlegged or two-legged. Joe was truly one of the “good guys”.

Thank you to Sangre De Cristo and Fremont Regional Hospices and to all those who came into our home to care for Joe, especially Edwina and Cassie, who stayed with us until the end. I will miss my big brother.

Alberta L. Lennox

Sept. 3, 1937 ~ Jan. 15, 2018 Alberta L. Lennox, 80, of Florence, passed away January 15, 2018. Alberta was born to Albert Snyder and Cora Mae (Acton) Snyder on September 3, 1937 in Elkton.

In 1944, when Alberta was 7 years old the family moved to Florence. Alberta graduated high school in 1955 and on Jan. 25, 1958, she married William L. Lennox Sr. Alberta loved to read, do crafts and play bunco. She was a bookkeeper, working at the Army Depot, Saint Joseph Hospital in Florence and Hildebrand Care Center in Cañon City for over 20 years.

She is survived by her daughter, Cindy (Jim) Oliver of Grapevine, Texas; son, William (Brenda) Lennox Jr. of Florence; brother, John (Doris) Snyder of Cañon City; sister-in-law, Peggy Snyder of Florence; brothers-in-law, Jim Lennox of Florence and John Lennox of Rockvale; grandchildren, Corey Oliver of Dallas, Texas, Daniel Lennox of Fort Collins, Michael Lennox, and David Kragovich of Cañon City, dear friends, Pat Lungren and Vola Yeomen of Cañon City along with numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Albert, Wesley and Ivan; sisters, Virginia, Alta and Dorothy.

Jan. 3, 1950 ~ Jan. 14, 2018 Carolyn Kay Hargrave, 68, of Cañon City, passed away Jan. 14, 2018. She was born in Yakima, Washington on Jan. 3, 1950, to Robert and Hertha (Winslow) Archer.

She is survived by her children, Rene Veenstra, Robert (Carrie) Hargrave; grandchildren, Laine Radford, Brittany Veenstra, Randen Hargrave, Ashelen Hargrave, Daniel Adams; siblings, Barbara (Neal) Hargrave, Dale (Carol) Archer; numerous extended family members and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, five siblings and husband of 25 years, Michel Hargrave.

Carolyn’s family would like to extend their most sincere gratitude to Michelle with Argus Home Care, along with Loriann and Kim with Frontier Hospice for their loving and compassionate care.

Nov. 5, 1956 - Jan. 15, 2018 Jeff passed away unexpectedly at home. He is survived by his companion of 16 years, Patricia Smith, her children & grandchildren who knew him as Papa Jeff; mother, Loetta Kennedy, Siblings: Janet Christmas, Tom (Roberta) Taylor, Barbara (Jim) Ottino, Beverly (Jeff) Bernard & Carolyn Taylor.

He was adored and admired by numerous nieces and nephews as well as being a faithful, endearing son to his mother and father.

He was a man of few words, but when he spoke, he spoke volumes. Jeff took great pride in all his endeavors. He was respected and looked up to for his strong work ethic and numerous talents including carpentry, machinery, and mechanical ingenuity. He was employed at the Chemical Weapons Depot as an Air Monitor Technician in Pueblo.

Jeff was preceded in death by his father, Herbert Taylor and brother-in-law Gerald Christmas. His family and friends will miss him deeply.

Bunk House Burgers celebrates fifth anniversary Bunk House Burgers celebrated its fifth anniversary Jan. 15 and it continues to offer quality burgers seven days a week.

Sisters Kathleen and Joanie Shoemaker opened the restaurant at 2147 Fremont Drive in 2013 and have kept it as a family run business.

The restaurant always has had a country western theme with a variety of options, including local favorites.

The Shoemakers have a long history in Fremont County. The family has run a ranch in the area since 1894.

The owners and operators of Cañon Signature Mortgage are celebrating their 10th anniversary in business this month.

The Lamberts moved to Cañon City from Naples, Fla., after stumbling on the area. Since moving their office to 715 Main St., the couple has been entrenched in community events and downtown activities.

One side of their newly renovated Victorian office is dedicated to their business, and the other side is open for First Friday events and displays by local artists. They host Christmas on Main, Trunk or Treat, the Black Friday turkey hunt, Guitars for Art, Chairs for Art and more.

This year to celebrate their fifth anniversary, the competition was on Bunk House’s actual anniversary, Jan. 15. Contestants battled out whose burger was best and judges selected Little J’s Garlic Burger as the No. 1 choice.

The winning chef Jaqueline Bahu received $100 and the burger will be on the BHB menu for the rest of 2018.

FAR to host Sole Mates Running Challenge Feb. 10

It’s not the glittery, stuffed, or chocolate-filled versions of hearts that Sole Mates celebrates, but rather the opportunity to keep your own heart healthy and happy.

February is recognized as Heart Health month, and Fremont Adventure Recreation invites residents to grab a running buddy and spend the morning of Feb. 10 at the Cañon City High School Track at Citizens’ Stadium.

Challenge yourself to a 30- or 60-minute walk / jog / or run and see how many laps around the track you can achieve.

“We kept this event cost low so that everyone can participate. We hope that entire families, groups of friends, and clubs will come out to spend some quality time together,” said Brian VanIwarden, director of FAR. “Your ‘sole mate’ is anyone you love getting out and being active with, the person (or people) who keeps you motivated and inspired.”

Since the event is at a track, participants will enjoy a more communal event than the average race. Everyone will end their challenge at 9:30, at which point the group will be treated to snacks, hot drinks, and a few fun prizes.

The event is not a competition, and no awards for the greatest distance will be awarded. Finishers of each session, however, will receive a commemorative medal to remind them of their accomplishment and their commitment to healthy activity.

“Everyone is at a different place in their quest for fitness, and this souvenir is to commemorate everyone’s commitment to fitness, their sole mate, and being part of a healthy community,” said Ashlee Sack, coordinator for the event.

The cost for entry is just $15 for adults, $10 for students, and $5 for children 12 and under.

HILLTOP’S CLOSING DAY IS JANUARY 27th

What a great 45 years the Dunn family has had on top of the hill in Canon City.

Ray and Carol started out in 1972 with just a little money and a big dream of owning their own business.

The Dunns raised their family, two children, James and Suzi in the back room.

James, after graduating from CSU, has made a successful career at Raymond James Financial in Florida with his wife, Carol and his daughter Shelby. Suzi married Brian Dieter in 1993 and have two sons, Easton and Cameron. Suzi worked at Hilltop as one of the few female meat cutters in the industry. In 2013, Suzi and Brian joined Ray and Carol as partners in the business. Brian has made many needed repairs and Suzi has taken over much of the day-to- day management.

Brian and Suzi Dieter will be remodeling and revamping part of the Hilltop building to accommodate their new business, Hilltop Custom Processing. They hope to be up and running by mid-summer in time to process 4-H Fair animals. In late summer, as archery and muzzle loading seasons begin, the shop will be ready to receive game animals, deer, elk and antelope. The Dieter family are all avid hunters who know how important the final step in the hunt can be. Each animal will be processed separately from cutting to grinding and wrapping, then quickly stored and frozen. The hunter can choose to have several types of sausage made from their meat.

Through the years, Hilltop has employed many people, including many young people starting their first job. Several generations have put food on the dinner table from Hilltop. Ray and Carol both say they will miss the many customers who have become friends and hope the same friends will wish them a “happy retirement”. “We know the Fremont County community will be accepting and welcome Brian and Suzi in their new venture.”
