A Precious Child EMPOWERING KIDS TO SUCCEED Every Child Deserves a Backpack

For the past 15 years, A Precious Child, a local nonprofit in Broomfield, has helped provide children in need with opportunities and resources to empower them to achieve their full potential. In its initial year, the organization provided basic essentials to only 51 children. To date, A Precious Child has served hundreds of thousands of children throughout the Denver Metro Area who are challenged by poverty, abuse, neglect or crisis situations with the resources and opportunities they need to thrive.

A Precious Child distributes basic essentials including clothing, toiletries, school supplies, gifts for the holidays, educational opportunities and access to extracurricular activities often unavailable to children faced with their family’s economic hardship and other difficult life challenges. These resources and opportunities help provide a sense of normalcy and allow children to focus on their education and personal growth

This year, A Precious Child will be hosting its 15th Annual Fill A Backpack Drive which will begin June 26 and run through August 4. The organization works to collect new backpacks and school supplies for children in the community who are the most in need. Each backpack is filled with grade-appropriate school supplies and is distributed to children through A Precious Child’s Resource Center and Agency Partners, including schools, human services organizations, at-risk youth centers, homeless shelters and foster care organizations

The main objective of their Fill A Backpack program is to give every child the opportunity to be empowered and equipped on the first day of school. Providing children in need with brand-new backpacks

filled with grade-appropriate school supplies, A Precious Child ensures thousands of Colorado kids can start the school year feeling confident, prepared and eager to learn.

“There is a continual increase in the need for our services,” explains Carina Martin, CEO and Founder of A Precious Child. “We rely so much on our community to help make our goal of providing backpacks to over 22,000 children in need. Every child deserves a backpack and seeing how our community rallies around preparing children for school is amazing They understand that education is key to breaking the cycle of poverty. ”

Carina explains, “You can see the determination of our community from the hundreds of hours spent volunteering to fill the backpacks. Corporations challenge each other to bring in the most supplies and donations, and individuals make financial gifts and supply donations to ensure every child returns to school with the tools to learn.”

The Fill A Backpack program is vital to the public education system.

With over 250,000 children living below the Colorado Self-Sufficiency Standard within the Denver Metro Area alone, the cost of school supplies is a financial strain on the families served by A Precious Child This struggle has only increased this year with the rising costs of essential goods due to inflation, making high-quality supplies out of reach for so many families. Fill A Backpack offers relief to struggling families so they can focus on other costs such as housing, food and gas.

Misti Martinez, the Programs Director at A Precious Child, reflects, “Seeing the impact that receiving a brand-new backpack filled with new supplies has on a child is remarkable. They show such a sense of pride and relief in taking their own supplies out of the packaging, labeling and organizing them for the first day of school. These brand-new items provide children in need with confidence and help improve mental health as they head into the school year excited to learn.”

The Fill A Backpack Drive does more than supply children with the tools they need to maximize their academic potential; it helps

bring individuals, corporations and community organizations together with the common purpose of helping Colorado children in need. Community members who would like to support the Fill A Backpack program have various options, including hosting a general supply drive, hosting a virtual supply drive, donating funds or volunteering their time.

The community can also drop off new backpacks and school supplies at A Precious Child located at 7051 W. 118th Ave., Broomfield, CO 80020, Monday – Friday from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Please visit APreciousChild.org/What-We-Do/ Fill-A-Backpack/ for more details or contact the Programs team at Programs@APreciousChild.org.

Champions for the underdogs

Post-pandemic Broomfield nonprofits balancing growth, increasing need

Broomfield Fellowship in Serving Humanity, known as FISH, has been serving Broomfield residents for 60 years. What started as a simple food pantry has transformed into a large nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing all factors that contribute to need in the community

“We really want our participants to thrive in our community so we want to address all the factors we can that contribute to that instability,” said Maggie Sava, communications and media manager for Broomfield FISH.

FISH offers a variety of solutions to those factors, including assistance with food, housing and emotional support and well-being. Since the start of the pandemic, FISH has grown from serving 7,000 unique individuals each year to 12,000 and the need for support isn’t slowing down.

“The number of people we’re serving and the needs have grown so much over the pandemic,” Sava said

“At the beginning it was a lot of triage, addressing immediate need and immediate crisis, but once we adapted to that we had to get back to deeper growth ”

For FISH, growth has come in the form of expanding programs and larger pools of resources. One of the ways the nonprofit has changed the most, recently, has been with the surging need for housing assistance.

“We had to grow and adapt to the growing needs in our community that hasn’t slowed at this point in the pandemic,” Sava said. “Our team has grown and our services have adjusted.”

Alongside FISH, other nonprofits in Broomfield have seen growth

and growing needs as well, including Conscious Alliance, which has been helping to stamp out hunger for the past 21 years through its unique services

“Conscious Alliance is an iconic movement of bands, brands, artists and fans on a mission to awaken compassion,” Executive Director Jusin Levy said.

The group has a unique approach to food assistance, partnering with artists and musicians to gather donations. At many concert venues around the country, Conscious Alliance is on hand gathering non-perishable food donations and selling limited-edition posters whose profits go to ending hunger.

“What we have found over the years is that it’s a really wonderful, easy entryway for folks to

The Gallery at Broomfield: Resort-Style Amenities with a Priority on Wellness

At The Gallery at Broomfield, a Stellar Senior Living Community, wellness specialists, experienced clinicians and lifestyle enrichment members “aim to partner with residents every single day to create a vibrant community that is intellectually and physically engaging,” said The Gallery’s wellness director Amy Wronikowski, RN. The Gallery at Broomfield, on track to open this summer, is currently welcoming families to tour at the separate leasing Showroom, and exclusive Founder’s Club perks are available to those who reserve an apartment now.

An ‘active and joyful senior lifestyle’

The latest offering from Stellar Senior Living Community, The Gallery at Broomfield is a luxurystyle retirement community featuring a broad spectrum of independent living, assisted living and memory care services. “We have not one or two levels of care but eight, which is one thing I love about The Gallery’s philosophy of care, ” Wronikowski said. “Families can choose the exact level of support, ensuring care is tailored to the resident and that you ’ re not paying for services you don’t need ” The Gallery’s wellness mission is to “provide a continuum of care that encourages an active and free senior lifestyle and supports residents’ privacy and dignity,” explained Bryan Sanchez, director of sales at The Gallery at Broomfield Wronikowski meets one-on-

one with residents to craft a customized wellness plan based on health needs and goals. “Our apartments are fully licensed, so someone may stay in their apartment if they move from one level of care to the next, ” Sanchez said Residents can easily move through a full continuum of Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Memory Care. “As needs change, our staff will be right here to help with care resources ”

Wellness inside and out

For all residents, an appreciation of physical, mental and emotional wellness is the foundation for The Gallery at Broomfield’s many brainboosting activities, lectures, and performances. “What sets us apart is our packed schedule of thoughtful, mind-engaging events, from guest speakers to a wide variety of groups and clubs, including the history club, music appreciation club, gaming clubs and book clubs,” Sanchez noted.

Wronikowski said, “We’ll go where the residents want to go and do what interests them, while also providing a full line-up of activities from day one, ” she said “We know a healthy mind is linked to a healthy body, and it’s important to us and our residents that we stimulate and support both ”

A fitness center like no other

To support physical health, the fitness center at The Gallery at Broomfield was designed “much larger than any gym you’d usually find in a retirement community,”

Wronikowski said Treadmills, ellipticals and stationary bikes, plus weightbearing equipment, line the fitness center, with space for classes, training or therapy sessions Near the fitness center, at the salon and spa residents may book appointments for haircuts, perms, pedicures, manicures and more.

Resort-style conveniences for lifelong joy

Also essential to health and wellness is “the ability to enjoy life,” Sanchez said Thus, The Gallery at Broomfield “brings a higher-end retirement experience to Broomfield that is not otherwise available within the area, ” he said, adding, “The Gallery will feature the amenities of a resort, including a concierge and a transportation service, to give residents a unique senior living experience.” Indoors, community rooms and apartments are designed to promote mental and physical wellness. Apartments are swathed in natural light, and apartments cater to the distinctive desires of residents, from basic kitchenettes to full kitchens in

select floor plans “My favorite is the spacious bathrooms,” Wronikowski said. “As a nurse, I’m mindful that most falls happen in the bathroom. At The Gallery, they combine luxury finishes with the safety of grab bars everywhere.”

Wronikowski’s second favorite highlight at The Gallery at Broomfield might be Milo’s Creamery, an ice cream shop that will be managed by local residents with special needs. For Sanchez, the Firefly Lounge balcony, with breathtaking views of the Front Range, is a beloved spot for morning coffee with friends.

“We are what a lot of families in the north Denver metro and Boulder areas have been looking for but haven’t been able to find, thanks to our resort-style amenities and differentiated levels of care, ” Sanchez said.

The Gallery at Broomfield is located at 1450 W 169th Ave , Broomfield. To schedule a tour, visit the Sales Showroom south of the community, or check out stellarliving com and search for The Gallery at Broomfield or call 720-698-3103.

Exploring the Benefits of Heat Therapy:

A Comprehensive Study by the Integrative Physiology of Aging Laboratory

The Integrative Physiology of Aging Laboratory, led by Distinguished Professor Dr. Douglas Seals, has been conducting groundbreaking research on the effects of lifestyle interventions on healthy cardiovascular aging for over 35 years. With continuous funding from the National Institutes of Health and more than 300 publications under its belt, the laboratory is dedicated to improving human healthspan through translational research. Currently, the lab is recruiting participants for a heat therapy study aimed at evaluating the efficacy of hot tub use in lowering blood pressure and improving vascular function in adults aged 50 and above

The laboratory’s mission revolves around conducting original research and providing highquality research training to the next generation of scientists The focus of their studies includes the physiological changes in function with aging, particularly those affecting cardiovascular health; the modulation of cardiovascular function by biological factors and lifestyle behaviors; the efficacy of interventions in reversing adverse changes in cardiovascular function with aging; and the integrative biological mechanisms that mediate these changes.

In recent years, passive heat therapy, or the chronic use of hot baths and saunas, has emerged as a potential treatment for elevated blood pressure and vascular dysfunction. Studies have shown an association between chronic heat therapy and a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease The

Integrative Physiology of Aging Laboratory has completed a small study on healthy middleaged and older adults, which demonstrated improvements in blood pressure and vascular function following passive heat therapy. This improvement may be attributed to the stabilization of essential proteins in the cell, particularly those involved in reducing oxidative stress, and alterations in the amount and types of microvesicles in our blood.

The laboratory is now conducting a larger study on adults over 50 with high blood pressure to confirm and expand upon these initial findings. Participants will be divided into two groups, both of which will undergo water immersion for 12 weeks, with hot tub sessions occurring approximately three times per week. One group will be immersed in hot water and the other will be immersed in warm water, and blood pressure and vascular function measurements will be taken before and after the intervention. Participants will be informed of the results of these measurements

By conducting this heat therapy study, the Integrative Physiology of Aging Laboratory aims to contribute valuable insights into the potential benefits of passive heat therapy for mid-life and older adults with high blood pressure If successful, this research could pave the way for more accessible, non-pharmacological interventions for individuals seeking to improve their cardiovascular health and overall well-being.

Individuals interested in participating in this groundbreaking study can learn more about the project by visiting the laboratory’s website at sealslaboratory.com. To express interest in participating, potential candidates can call 970-460-8970 or email

cvstudy cuboulder@gmail com

As our understanding of the human body and the aging process continues to evolve, the Integrative Physiology of Aging Laboratory remains committed to exploring innovative ways to promote healthy aging and improve cardiovascular health With the heat therapy study, the laboratory seeks to unlock new possibilities for a better quality of life for mid-life and older adults through accessible and effective lifestyle interventions

give back,” Levy said. “They’re already going to the concert, they get something in exchange for donating which is really kind of a badge It’s also memorabilia, right? It’s a reminder of that connection that they had with their friends, that they had with the music that night, and that they gave back to something to make sure that kiddos and families have access to healthy food.”

The group opened its national distribution center in Broomfield in 2021 and has continued growing ever since.

“What we’ve found is an incredibly welcoming community with really passionate leaders and heartfelt organizations, and there’s been so much collaboration to further support this community here, and the greater Colorado community,” Levy said. “We felt so welcomed in Broomfield and such a part of the community and feel very lucky to be woven into the fabric that makes Broomfield and the greater

Colorado area so special.”

One organization that contributes to growth in Broomfield is the Veterans Museum. Open since the early 2000s, the museum was started by a group of World War II Veterans who wanted to honor the role that veterans played in start-

ing the town. What started as a collection of memorabilia from World War II has grown into the flourishing museum open for visitors today.

“It slowly grew to include more than just World War II, it eventually grew and included Vietnam

and Korea,” said Megan Huelman, board member and lead of the marketing committee. “Now we’ve gotten to a point where we’ve really covered every branch of the military, as well as every conflict that the U S has been in since the be-

A Community Well Fed: Thanking Food Pantry Volunteers

Volunteer schedules are flexible, as in no set schedules – and it works better that way, Decker said.

foods, meats and maybe some sparkling water, it’s a dizzying assortment of foods.

five 20

How about a big shout out to North Denver Cares Food Pantry, a non-profit dedicated to feeding Broomfield families and seniors for the past years Demand for groceries has nearly doubled since last year, said Bryan Decker, founder of North Denver Cares Food Pantry

“We were in the neighborhood of feeding 450 families a week in 2021, and now in we ’ re providing meals for about 500 families per week because of the pandemic and the economy. ” Decker does not take a salary, nor do his nearly 200 volunteers – for whom he is thankful. He hopes more volunteers sign up so he can run a full crew of 250

“I don’t make schedules, I let people come when they can If I run low on volunteers, I put the word out and they come in,” he said “Some people work two-hour shifts, others work eight hours.”

“Our goal and purpose is to help people in any way we can.”

By day’s end, somehow, all work is complete –despite the sheer volume of food moving through the facility. From cartons of milk, packs of cheese, boxes of peanut butter, cannedveggies and fruits, fresh and frozen

“We pick up about 25 to 30 pallets of food each week If we get a lot of produce, it’s heavy, about 17,000 to 33,000 pounds of food,” Decker said Then it’s up to volunteers to fill grocery carts and banana boxes for the recipients to choose from – which is pre-determined by family size. A full-sized grocery cart feeds eight to 12 people per week, while banana boxes feed seniors and singles

Decker started this operation

with his wife, Marilyn, many years ago. She passed away years ago, he said. Despite his loss, Decker continues his mission of keeping Broomfield residents fed

When asked why Decker carries out the tradition of giving back to the community, here’s what he said:

“It’s very rewarding I started it years ago with my wife, I do this in her memory. It’s ingrained in my life because I want to serve people.”

Behind the scenes with Chief Ramos

Fire Chief David Ramos has been fighting fires for nearly 40 years with the North Metro Fire Rescue District, where he was hired while still perusing his business administration degree at Metro State University in 1984. A bachelor’s degree and nearly 30 years later, in 2014 he took the reins of the district that oversees seven fire stations that serve the residents of Broomfield, Northglenn and unincorporated areas of Adams, Boulder, Jefferson and Weld counties.

“I have worked my way up the ranks,” Ramos said “I have had the privilege of serving as the fire chief for over nine years ”

Ramos was born and raised in the area, went to high school in Thornton and enrolled in fire science courses at Red Rocks Community College after a stint in construction.

“My interest in a fire service career developed when I got an insider’s view into the job from my brother, Mike, who became a firefighter 18 months before I did,” Ramos said. “It was the first time I learned about the all-hazards aspect of being a firefighter. I was drawn to the variety of the job, the ability to serve and help others, the ongoing training involved and the opportunity for growth.”

We caught up with Ramos for a Q&A and he talked about his passion for teamwork and collaboration, safety and serving the community and what he does to wind down after a long shift

QWhat does the average day look like for the fire chief? What about the firefighters?

AThere is no average day in the fire service, especially for our firefighters who run emer-

gency calls 24/7 That’s part of what makes the job so appealing.

My days as fire chief are very different from when I was a firefighter. I spend a large amount of time collaborating with local and

regional partners to enhance the delivery of emergency services to our community.

For example, we helped launch an integrated 911 hub last year involving three 911 communications centers and six fire departments.

It shortened response times in certain areas of the fire district, and it allows us to get more resources on scene faster. It was a multi-year project, and it took a dedicated group of people across multiple

Founded by Coach Nevin Reid just a year ago, PSTA has quickly become an integral part of the Broomfield sports scene, working to ensure athletes can play the game they love while minimizing injury risks.

At PSTA, safety is the top priority. The academy teaches Leverage Based Tackling, a technique designed to keep athletes’ heads out of the tackle and reduce the likelihood of

injuries With a combination of drills and calisthenics, PSTA helps athletes develop muscle memory over time for sound tackling. Ultimately, the academy aims to promote a safer yet still aggressive tackling style by emphasizing proper technique

“Our motto is: Tackle everything in life with Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Discipline, and Excellence,” says Coach Reid. “No matter what one ’ s goal in life, one must take P.R.I.D.E. in order to achieve their goals. At PSTA, we want to instill P.R.I.D.E. in the athletes so they can not only be successful on the field of battle but off the field in all walks of life.”

PSTA stands out as the only camp, clinic, or academy in the area that focuses solely on the

tackling aspect of football Their competitive advantage lies in promoting the sport through safer tackling techniques.

With Broomfield’s rich football history, from youth football programs like Broomfield Blitz to high school teams like 2A Prospect Ridge Academy, 3A Holy Family, 4A Broomfield High School, and 5A Legacy High School, PSTA has found the perfect community to call home. The academy’s coaches have played or coached for Broomfield Blitz and high schools like Broomfield High and Holy Family, further strengthening their connection to the local football community.

Power Step Tackle Academy is a testament to the importance of safety and technique in football.

In just one year, PSTA has made a significant impact on the Broomfield sports community, instilling P.R.I.D.E. in athletes and ensuring they can tackle safely and effectively.

WHY TRAIN TO TACKLE? THE BETTER QUESTION IS WHY NOT TRAIN TO TACKLE?

• Does a baseball player go to the batting cage?

• Does a basketball player work on their free throws and ball handling skills?

• Does a soccer player work on their kicks and dribbles? The overwhelming answer is YES!

Family Hearing

Cutting through the Noise

The sounds of summer are just around the corner. In Colorado that means reunions with friends at our favorite Red Rocks shows and chatter with family during backyard barbeques This fun is often accompanied by noise that both creates the scene we enjoy and challenges our ability to communicate The effort to understand speech through the commotion reveals that listening is a mixture of hearing, attention and participation. This is true for all listeners, but becomes more taxing for those with hearing loss.

“Our ability to focus on the signal we want is a skill that can be tuned with the right devices calibrated to meet the needs of a unique hearing profile and anatomy, ” says Georgianna Hearne, Au.D., CCC-A. “A partnership with a hearing professional who can provide an evidenced-based, personalized treatment strategy is the key to unlocking each listener’s maximal potential.” This year marks

Family Hearing’s 60th year in practice and it’s safe to say that their dedication to the science of hearing care is why they have stood the test of time

Part of that commitment means continually updating clinical equipment and procedures to meet the best practice standards of the day Most patients visit with the objective of highlighting

a particular voice over the din of competing sounds which is why Family Hearing regularly conducts sound field testing. “We simulate a complex listening environment and test how well a patient can pick out the speech over the noise with their hearing technology,” explains Jennifer La Borde, B.A., BCHIS. “We compare these results with how they perform without amplification to verify the improvement.”

Noise not only exists in the settings people find themselves in It is also generated in the hearing devices Some level of noise in electronics is expected, but too much can diminish sound quality Moisture for instance, can cause static Because hearing technology is cooler than the ear canal it resides in, condensation is naturally created This means that regular use of hearing instruments impact performance This is why Family Hearing schedules routine check-up appointments to mitigate moisture accumulation and test that noise levels in instruments are within

manufacturer specifications. There are a lot of options to improve hearing today which makes deciding where to start difficult. Since 1963, Family Hearing has demonstrated that finding the right professional to work with is the most important step. “Most people focus on selecting the right device,” says Chelsea Walters, B.S., BCHIS. “While the technology is essential in enabling access to sound, it’s critical that it be accurately programmed to the listener’s prescription and regularly analyzed to ensure that it’s performing appropriately.” The team at Family Hearing’s promise to its patients is to support their listening beyond the hearing device itself. It’s why they are able to help the people they serve cut through the noise so they can tune into the sounds that matter to them

After 23 years, BHS principal still loves her job

Ginger Ramsey approaches her work with compassion, kindness

When Ginger Ramsey walks past a group of students playing hacky sack in the hallways, they don’t bristle at her approach. They don’t all scatter for fear of getting in trouble or cringe as they await punishment. Instead, Ramsey asks them to take it outside, and they do.

The kids know that Ramsey doesn’t rule Broomfield High School with the iron fist of a dictator, instead, her approach as principal marries compassion and kindness with a genuine love for her job And if 23 years of success is anything to go by, her approach works, and it works well.

“I still, after 23 years, think that we’re built as a unique community which cares about its school, not that other districts and other communities don’t care about the school, but Broomfield High School just has a hometown feeling,” Ramsey said.

Ramsey grew up in a small town in West Virginia, and is intimately familiar with the feeling of a small town. A feeling that, despite its size, Broomfield manages to maintain.

Ramsey is finishing her 42nd year teaching with Boulder Valley School District, which began at Boulder High School In her time in Broomfield, she’s gained experience and a unique understanding of the dynamics of the community

“We have a relationship with the city government, and you just don’t always see that in other schools,” she said. “We have an ongoing conversation with the city and they’ll call and ask us for things and we’ll

Vision Of Veterans Museum Founders Lives On, Thrives

In 2000—55 years after the end of World War II—a small group of veterans had a “ crazy ” idea: Start a museum honoring local veterans

The group— John Atkinson (WWII, Navy), Vic Boccard (WWII, Marine), Bob Davenport (Korean War, Army), Paul Murphy (WWII, Navy), and Bob Seeber (WWII, Navy), plus Bill Humphrey, a lawyer and nonveteran—had enthusiasm, a love of country and military history, and a few artifacts—but no money, no building, and no experience operating a museum.

But there was support within Broomfield. The Evening Rotary Club donated $10,000 so that Omni Media Services, a local video-production company, could interview and videotape dozens of local veterans and preserve their military memories for posterity.

Many of these veterans offered to loan or donate artifacts from their time in service.

In 2001, Broomfield built a new library and space in the old one was offered rent-free to nonprofits. With the support of the Mayor and the City Council, the museum founders were granted 500 square feet.

As more artifacts began to come in, members of the woodshop at the Broomfield Senior Center volunteered to make display cases, others were acquired from retail stores.

The museum celebrated its grand opening on June 6, 2003, and continued to garner support from national and local sources.

In 2008 the City offered the museum the entire upper floor of the building—enlarging the space from 500 to 2,700 square feet.

Then, in 2017 the museum expanded into the entire building, increasing the number and size of its exhibits.

Besides the nine rooms of permanent exhibits, within the past couple of years the museum ’ s rotating exhibits have featured displays on Boulder’s Admiral Arleigh Burke, the 20th anniversary of 9/11, 80th anniversaries of the attack on Pearl Harbor and Jimmy Doolittle’s raid on Tokyo, and Colorado’s contributions to the Civil War and the victories in World Wars I and II.

The museum continues to reach out in many ways: off-site displays; programs for schools; senior centers, and service clubs; Coffee & Conversation presentations by veterans, authors, and historians twice a month; plus Memorial

Day, Veterans Day, and Broomfield Days events.

The museum received History Colorado’s prestigious MilesBancroft award in 2021.

Today the museum has over 6,200 artifacts in its collection, but the focus remains on Colorado veterans, including 26 Coloradans who were awarded the Medal of Honor—from the SpanishAmerican War to the Global War on Terror. A sign over the entrance says it all: “Where the heroes live on. ”

The museum, at 12 Garden Center, is open Tuesday and Thursdays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, visit the museum ’ s website broomfieldveterans.com or call (303) 460-6801.

Windo VanGo

The Genuine Art of Professional Window Coverings

Windo VanGo has a name as memorable as the locals behind this longtime Broomfield window treatment business. Andrew Redenbarger’s father, Ned, started the niche company 28 years ago “My older daughters have joined me in the showroom some Saturdays to help learn about the business and help out. ” Andrew says “It is fulfilling to see the family business growing.”

While Windo VanGo’s business has doubled in the last 9 years, Andrew says it’s because of the strong establishment his father created. “I just built on a tremendous foundation, and feel really fortunate right now to not be codependent on things, such as new construction. We have really strong business relationships that can help us endure financial challenges in the world right now. ”

All in the family: They’ve got you covered “About 45 percent of business is local,” Andrew says “That’s why our slogan ‘ your hometown

dealer’ rings true We ask people where they hear about us and they say they just know us or we went to their neighbor’s house, things like that.” It’s a common sight to see Windo VanGo vans around town, the expert crew is ready with a friendly wave. “It’s a fun place to do business and it doesn’t really feel like work,” Andrew says. “Eighty percent of the time I’m talking to people about life ” More of the “life” conversations have been happening regularly. Windo VanGo has been helping victims of the Marshall Fire who have smoke damaged window coverings by offering a 25 percent discount for replacement blinds.

“We recognize that our community is working through a difficult time. Our desire to help is stronger than ever Listening to the myriad of stories of what was lost, how customers escaped and even the guilt of having a home to come back to. ” Andrew and his team feel it’s the least they can do to help. Many customers are now coming to Windo VanGo as they rebuild, even updating their original design aesthetic.

“We find solutions to people’s problems”

But besides being genuine, there are some other reasons that Windo VanGo is Broomfield’s hometown choice: “We find solutions to people’s problems,”

Andrew says “They tell us what they want to have done, we listen to their desires, and we find the best products for their homes ” The customer-centric approach is not always common in an industry driven by sales numbers “We’re not the $150-an-hour designers, we don’t have certain quotas to sell, and all we do is window coverings.”

And in a state with 300 days of sunshine, there’s a huge demand for covering windows and repairs – and endless ways to combine function and fashion in window décor. Windo VanGo exclusively sells Hunter Douglas coverings, with about 40 percent of its products made right at the American-made brand’s manufacturing plant in Broomfield.

These days, Andrew says many

Colorado customers are opting for “cellular” or honeycomb-style blinds, but Windo VanGo sells it all: sheers, shutters, rollers, roman shades, outdoor patio shades and more. “We sell anything and everything with which you can cover a window,” he says. “With how much sun and how little natural shading we have here, customers are mostly interested in light control and energy efficiency.”

Windo VanGo is assisting customers with selecting products which qualify for both the Federal Tax Credit and Xcel Energy Rebates The new, updatedshowroom is currently open for customers to view how the shades look in a window, try the lifting mechanisms, and take a look at various fabrics and colors

For more information about Windo VanGo window décor and services, visit windovango.net, call 303.420.3788 to make an appointment to visit the showroom.

North Metro Fire Rescue District has served its citizens since 1946 with a high level of care, compassion and professionalism. When the fire district was formed over 75 years ago, it consisted of 30 volunteer firefighters, one fire truck and covered a sparsely populated area of farmland

Now it consists of over 170 professional firefighters, administrative, training and fire prevention staff, seven fire stations, a training center and its headquarters Different from city fire departments, North Metro Fire is a special district governed by an elected board of directors who help establish policies and budgets.

Today, North Metro Fire responds to nearly 13,500 emergency calls annually and serves a population of approximately 123,000 people, including the City and County of Broomfield, the City of Northglenn and unincorporated areas of Adams, Boulder, Jefferson and Weld Counties

The district covers over 60 square miles, including residential and commercial development

Charlie Charbonneau has worked for North Metro Fire since 2020 as a firefighter and EMT He said, “I find a lot of gratification through the variety of things we are asked to do. Sometimes people just don’t know who else to call It’s important to me to be able to find a solution to a problem regardless of what it may be. Our citizens depend on us to deliver high-quality service all the time no matter what is

needed People often ask if we ’ re awake the whole time when we ’ re on shift We work for 48 hours at a time. We work out together, train together, eat meals together and try to get sleep at night It’s a home away from home for 48 hours at a time.”

North Metro Fire is an allhazards agency equipped and committed to ensuring public safety through fire suppression, emergency medical services and patient transportation, hazardous materials response, technical rescue and wildland firefighting

In addition to responding to emergencies, the fire district proactively works to build a safer community through education, outreach and prevention. Community programs include CPR training, ambulance membership program, smoke alarm distribution for lower income families, safety presentations, a Citizens Academy and other services to help prevent fires and injuries. Through training, program development and interagency collaboration, North Metro Fire continues to be a strong fire service organization dedicated to providing a high quality of service and leadership.

Charlie said, “The North Metro firefighters LOVE their jobs and the citizens we serve Our goal is incredible customer service 24 hours a day, no matter if it’s a life-threatening situation or helping someone up off the ground.”

Bal Swan Children’s Center Where Children and Families Belong

Bal Swan Children’s Center is deeply embedded in the Broomfield community. A longtime advocate for young children and their families, Bal Swan’s mission remains unwavering: to build a socialemotional foundation and nurture an inclusive learning community where children and families grow and belong.

Core services include inclusive education and therapy services; individualized education for each child; and an emphasis on socialemotional development.

Bal Swan was founded in 1963 to fill an unmet community need for inclusive preschool education for Broomfield children. There were no programs for early childhood

intervention and education at that time. So five dedicated Broomfield families approached a teacher at Kohl Cottage and invited her to be the teacher for their children. She agreed and used space at the Dance Arts Studio to provide preschool education.

The pioneering teacher also invited parents to leave their neurotypical children with her, learning in action what is now best practice: an inclusive, peer-oriented

Mission Statement: Bal Swan Children’s Center builds a social-emotional foundation and nurtures an inclusive learning community where each child and family grows and belongs!

environment is most motivating for children.

The first Bal Swan teaching facility was built on land in the Northmoor Park neighborhood thanks to funds provided by community philanthropists Bal Swan and Fred Spallone. But a fresh space is soon coming to fruition: a new facility that will serve families with children from birth through fifth grade

“This decision is a commitment to families who will now be able to

spend 10 years at Bal Swan, growing as a family and learning about the power of individualized, social-emotional education,” says Executive Director Debbie Kunz. Classrooms will remain small, with low teacher-student ratios, inclusive therapy offerings and an emphasis on age-appropriate learning With a facility that will carry Bal Swan into the future, the community organization has re-empowered its original vision: To create an inclusive world by imparting lifelong skills of acceptance and respect Bal Swan Children’s Center, 1145 East 13th Ave., Broomfield, 303.466.6308, balswan.org.

ask them for things and we just work it out It’s just been that way forever, which is unique ”

For Ramsey, what’s more important than the money the city might give her school is the ways in which its relationship with city government allows for the continued support of Broomfield students.

“It’s not just because of money, but it’s the relationships that we’ve built, that we can work together to support our kids,” she said.

Ramsey believes that it’s a combination of those relationships and the school’s reputation that makes so many students proud to be Broomfield Eagles. From seeing young children wearing the school’s blue and white colors, to community members showing up in blue and white to support the school’s state champion football team that, Ramsey said, is what shows the community’s support for her kids.

Many of those same community members keep returning to Broomfield High, enrolling their children and grandchildren into the same school they attended.

“Another thing that’s unique about Broomfield is the number of teachers that I have that went to school here that chose to come back and raise their families in this community,” she said. “That says a big thing to me, it shows they enjoyed how they were raised and that they want their children to have the same experience ”

In over two decades at the school, Ramsey has seen Broomfield grow And although much of that growth has occurred outside of attendance areas, Broomfield High is still growing right alongside the city.

“All of the growth we’ve seen in the last 20 years typically wouldn’t be impacting our numbers,” she said. “We are attracting kids from Legacy and Stanley, or Horizon and Northland and even further…and I attribute that to our reputation and that it’s a good place to go to school.”

Broomfield High’s reputation is largely as an athletic school, something Ramsey is very proud of But the school is more than just athletes, she explained

“I expect my athletes to be good

students first,” she said. She expects excellence from her students on and off the field.

In the Eagle gym, you can find evidence of that excellence in the form of state championship banners. Many schools will hang league or second-place banners, but Ramsey said that she only hangs state championship banners and still has an entire wall full of them.

“And it’s state championship banners in winter percussion, and cheers, and everything, we really want to showcase all of our students,” she said “It’s an entire

wall full of that, and that gives me pride.”

Outside of school, Ramsey spends most of her time with her family.

“We lost our house in the Marshall Fire, and we had that house for almost 30 years,” she said. “Now I spend my time with my husband and five grandchildren, watching them grow up.”

Even time spent outside of school is still full of the Broomfield High community, Ramsey said She can never leave the house without running into someone who recognizes

her.

“My children have lived through this,” she said. “It’s now my grandchildren living through this, joking with me that I can’t go out in public without someone knowing me.”

Much of her role as an iconic figure in the community comes from her involvement with students, and she explained that she spends very little time in her office.

“I try not to be in my office,” she said. “I love being out interacting with kids in the hallway.”

That hands-on approach has given her an immense sense of pride and love for her job

“I just want to continue to work with students and teachers to continue to make this the best place,” she said. “We can always improve, but I’m proud of the work that we’ve done so far. I’m proud of our students and how they handle themselves and I’m passionate about just continuing to give them the opportunities, the experiences of what high school should be about.”

Above all else, Ramsey explained the immense love she has for her job, which doesn’t even feel like coming to work anymore. Instead, it feels like coming home.

“I feel like I’ve died and gone to heaven to come in and get to be in this community, and work with these kids and families,” Ramsey said

Helping Families Say Goodbye

Kelsi Tesone Mathews, MSP, owner of In Memoriam, has two priorities: family and community.

She said, “Broomfield is certainly a city unlike any other and I’m thrilled I can share my experiences with my husband and our children here We truly consider ourselves fortunate to be a real family taking care of real families.”

She grew up here and was a member of BHS class of 2006. Mathews has served as a funeral director for many years. She explained their start: “In Memoriam started in 2017 when we began to see a necessity for Broomfield to have a choice when it came to end-of-life providers. Not every funeral home is the same, just as not every person we care for is the same. ”

In Memoriam is a family owned and operated funeral parlor and crematory located here in Broomfield “We believe in having the difficult conversations and navigating planning ahead, but we understand that isn’t always the reality for a lot of families we serve, ” she said. “Death is already a subject a lot of people have a hard time talking about, but we want you to feel comfortable asking anything.”

In Memoriam is a fullspectrum funeral service provider Mathews said, “We offer simple cremation all the way to traditional burials. We are unique in that we have our crematory on-site and specialize in unique offerings like witnessed cremation, home funerals, and private visitations. We are happy to answer any questions about our services and even offer our services to Spanish-speaking families.”

She is also a licensed advancedplanning specialist, which allows In Memoriam to put together unique prepaid funeral plans for families wishing to plan ahead or even families up against Medicaid spend-downs. They are proud to serve any and all religions, cultures, and beliefs “We want our families to know that once your loved one enters our care,

they never leave and that funeral prices between providers can vary greatly so we can ensure you know who you ’ re working with,” she said.

In the last year, In Memoriam has been focused on getting their name out to anyone who may need their help. Mathews said, “We are so proud of our continued commitment to serve

the people of our community

At Embracing Hope, we will honor and celebrate the ways we have come together as a community this past year to help our neighbors in need

agencies to bring it to fruition To see its benefit to the community is a great feeling, and it shows the impact of teamwork and collaboration. Strengthening relationships among our city, county and law enforcement partners is something that’s important to me.

At a regional level, I work closely with the fire chiefs of our five neighboring fire departments, and together with other chief-level staff, we have developed joint fire academies, multi-agency training and aligned emergency response plans This has not only improved service to the community, it has also increased efficiencies and sharing of resources across the north area. Aside from external collaborations, I spend time working with leaders within our organization on internal priorities and ensuring the fire district’s goals and activities align with the desires of the community.

QWhen thinking about firefighters, we normally think of actually fighting fires, or maybe getting cats out of trees, but what other things do you all do for the community? Anything we might not expect?

ANorth Metro Fire is a true all-hazards fire department. Most people probably don’t know what that really entails. Medical calls account for over 67% of our 911 calls, and North Metro Fire provides emergency transport to the hospital, in addition to providing emergency medical services on scene.

Beyond firefighting and EMS, North Metro firefighters are skilled in a number of technical disciplines to handle the range of emergencies we are called to That includes technical rescue, wildland fires, hazardous materials incidents, auto accidents, ice rescues, aircraft emergencies and a number of other calls, such as assisting someone who has fallen at home and needs assistance, or a carbon monoxide alarm going off at someone’s home. And yes, we do have the occasional cat stuck in the tree, although cats typically come down on their own without our help. We have our

share of animal rescues and treat them seriously, too.

Behind the scenes, our firefighters dedicate a lot of time toward training and fitness to be mentally and physically prepared for any type of incident. Training is an important priority of ours because we want to make sure our firefighters are prepared for anything, especially the less frequent, but higher-risk emergencies. Fitness is also important to prevent injury because being a firefighter is very physically demanding.

Aside from the types of emergencies we respond to, I think resi-

dents may not be aware of the work we do in the community to enhance safety and reduce risk Our firefighters put a lot of time into knowing the district and pre-planning for emergencies

For instance, we map out commercial buildings and neighborhoods, including pinpointing where water hydrants are and other vital information that assists our firefighters when responding to an emergency. Our firefighters and Fire Prevention Division staff also inspect businesses, apartment complexes and partner with developers

and construction companies to ensure they are following the fire code to keep our community as safe as possible.

Last year, our Wildland Team partnered with our cities and counties to do a district-wide assessment of wildland fire risk and helped form plans to mitigate risk and educate the community on steps they can take to help protect their home. Additionally, we dedicate time for teaching the community important safety skills and ways to prevent injuries and fires.

QWe know firefighters help the community, but what kinds of things can the community do to help you and your firefighters?

Any volunteer opportunities for ways to offer support?

AThe best way to support us is to partner with us to reduce risk in our community. We offer a number of safety education programs to equip our community

members with information and skills that can reduce 911 emergencies and positively impact outcomes.

If I had to pick one thing people could do to support us, it would be to learn CPR. If someone receives CPR prior to first responders arriving, their chance of surviving cardiac arrest increases two to three times We need individuals to provide that initial CPR in order to help us save more lives Attend one of our free CPR classes, or request a training for your group or organization.

We do have a handful of volunteers who assist us with community events and other outreach opportunities. Our volunteers are alumni of our Citizens Academy, and if someone is interested in supporting us in that way, I encourage them to sign up for an upcoming Citizens Academy.

QWhat are some of your favorite things about your job?

AThe favorite aspects of my job have changed over time, as I’ve stepped into different roles When I was a firefighter,

the most rewarding aspect of the job was having a direct hand in helping someone during their emergency. Now that I’m in a leadership position, what I love most is hearing stories about the great work our crews and staff are doing, and I enjoy getting to know all the men and women who serve our community

I’ve also really enjoyed planning for our future There’s been so much growth in our community over the past decade, and it’s exciting to help shape our organization and find ways we can continue to be better for the community.

QAny favorite stories from on the job?

AMy favorite memories all involve seeing the change that comes over someone’s face when they’ve been helped. It was true when I was a firefighter, and it still rings true today as I meet community members who share their experiences with our crews.

QBroomfield has seen some immense growth over the past year, in what ways has the

fire department grown alongside the city?

AOur region has grown tremendously in recent years, and so has our call volume. The population in our fire district has risen 21% over the past decade, and our call volume has grown by 82% Additionally, there’s increasing complexity to the calls we respond to

North Metro Fire has responded by adding emergency personnel and resources where needed, increasing our training and finding ways to maximize efficiency through collaborations with our community partners.

I can say with confidence that our ability to handle the increasingly complex calls has never been higher. I’m in awe of the capabilities we have in EMS and emergency response delivery. The dedication, knowledge and professionalism exhibited by our employees makes me proud of the direction we are heading as an organization.

Advanced Urgent Care & Occupational Medicine: Local Health Care with a Family Approach

March 2020 was the time for us all to step up; we were all in this together. As a healthcare provider, Advanced Urgent Care & Occupational Medicine was in a unique position where they could quickly provide services specific to COVID-19.

Mere days after the country was shut down, Advanced Urgent Care made a plan to start offering drive-up COVID testing from a mobile bus parked outside of their Brighton clinic. Once the rapid COVID test was available, they partnered with several city governments to provide their residents free rapid COVID testing. They brought those services to the city of Broomfield at the City and County Building. The urgent care also partnered with employers to provide testing for their employees. Over 50,000 COVID tests were performed in 2020 alone.

When the COVID-19 vaccine became available in 2021, Advanced Urgent Care was ready to administer the vaccine as it was rolled out to the public. Advanced Urgent Care administered over 40,000 vaccines in 2021.

Today, the clinics offer curbside COVID testing with same-day results, and COVID treatment through a telehealth visit or inclinic visit. But, how was all of this possible?

How was Advanced Urgent Care so readily able to step up? It all began with Dr. Tony Euser.

The Beginnings of Advanced Urgent Care

Advanced Urgent Care’s owner, Dr. Euser, always wanted to be a doctor, but started working for his parent ’ s greenhouse business out of college. A few years after the business was sold, Dr. Euser, at the age of 40, followed his dream and enrolled in medical school.

In 2006, Dr. Euser opened his own primary care practice in Brighton. He quickly noticed that

his patients did not have access to affordable, after-hours care. So, in 2012, Dr. Euser opened the first Advanced Urgent Care.

“As access to medical care has changed I found there was a need to bridge the gap between what local primary care physicians can offer and the emergency room, ” Dr Euser said. “Our goal is to provide medical care with extended hours for non-life-threatening injuries.”

Up until late 2019, Advanced Urgent Care had three locations Due to the abrupt closing of another urgent care center, Advanced Urgent Care was able to expand to nine clinics by the end of 2020. One of these facilities is located in Broomfield at the intersection of W 144th Ave. and Lowell Blvd. With these new facilities Dr. Euser knew he could do more to help stop the spread of COVID through providing testing, treatment, and vaccination.

As of mid-2023, Advanced Urgent Care has 13 clinics with a 14th opening in Thornton later in the year. Their second Broomfield location opened in September 2022 at the intersection of Hwy 287 and Miramonte Blvd. in the Broomfield Marketplace.

Dr. Euser started his business with the core values of: “Do your best. Do the right thing Show others you care. ” That is what he and the rest of the Advanced Urgent Care team continue to do over 10 years after opening their first clinic.

What is an Urgent Care?

Urgent cares serve as a bridge between primary care providers and patients receiving the same care after hours, typically weeknights and weekends. These clinics are also a more affordable option than the emergency room. Stop by an urgent care clinic instead of the emergency room for non-life-threatening illness or injury. Advanced Urgent Care is open seven days a week.

Beyond the Brush Painters Protecting Your Colorado Home and Increasing Its Curb Appeal

When professional house painter Salvador Espinoza takes a quote to paint a derelict house, his passion comes alive. His painting crews replace weather-beaten boards, hang windows and recaulk before dousing the structure with primer and a new homey hue

“My favorite jobs are the ones that are the most beat up and trashed houses,” Espinoza said. “When I leave, there is satisfaction for me there is nothing like a challenge ”

Espinoza moved his family from Colorado Springs to Denver in 2006 to launch his own business, Beyond the Brush Painting. In Colorado Springs he had worked for another paint company, beginning as a painter and then working his way up to running a crew.

“As time went by, my wife got pregnant and I wanted more, ” he said. “I have always been a go-getter. So I moved from Colorado Springs to Denver my dad taught me that your handshake is everything. I didn’t want to compete with the person who got me [into] the business.”

All of the money he had saved to launch his own business went to mailers, hats and T-shirts, and since then, Espinoza has worked

hard to build a reputation of quality, and doing the best that he knows how to do There’s no flashy social media campaigns to his business; just mainly growth from word of mouth Today Espinoza employs four crews, and he is involved to some degree in nearly every project his company completes.

“I don’t sell a paint job; I sell myself,” he said “Sometimes my guys are done… and I come and walk it before I will let the crew put away their stuff One thing is what the customer says; the other is what the professional says. So I look at all of the problem places and we do it right.”

One of the craziest jobs Espinoza ever took was an invitation from an elderly lady. When he drove up to the house, it was a magnificent large stucco home in a nice neighborhood. As he sipped coffee with her on her back porch, she expressed that she wanted the deck to be stained bright pink with blue spindles There was no HOA in the neighborhood.

“As you went to the back [of the house], it was an in-your-face deck,” he said. “She just loved it. Getting that color of stain was not easy. Sherwin Williams can only do so much. The front was totally

beautiful and normal.”

After decades in the house painting business, Espinoza knows that no two houses are the same. Material compositions, shifting foundations, and weather factors all determine what is needed for each unique painting job. Espinoza pitches an individualized bid for each situation.

Colorado poses particular challenges for house paint Altitude and sunshine can greatly reduce the life of a coat of house paint, but other factors, such as color, also play into how long the paint will hold up. Espinoza sees most local house paint jobs hold up well for 8 to 12 years. In his experience, darker colors fade more quickly in the Colorado elements. A taupe colored house, for example, would have 3 to 4 more years of healthy paint life than a dark navy blue house. What’s the best value house color?

“Grey is the color that over years I keep going to those homes and it looks in really good shape; at the 10-year mark, 12-year or 15-year mark,” he said. “Medium gray. ”

The worst color in Espinoza’s experience is white because it does not fade. This is a problem because damage to the housing materials can hide behind the white paint that seems to live beyond its

expiration date But why is keeping house paint up to date that important?

“The biggest thing with paint here in Colorado is the sheen,” Espinoza said. “It reflects the sun more, and freshly painted walls deflect the water more, protecting the wood. If you have paint, any board is going to be good As soon as paint starts to come off, that’s when you see some of the swelling and cracks happening.”

Swelling and damage can even happen to cement board siding, as Espinoza has found that cement board siding tends to hold heat more than most housing materials. His top product recommendation is stucco

“It still needs to be painted, but it does hold up the best with paint,” he said. “Stucco is more like a 15 or a 20 year [life span] The thing with stucco is, whenever you put any type of paint on it, the stucco soaks it up it will fade overtime, and with hail it disintegrates a little bit, and that’s why you keep painting … but it is the better product.”
