The Ball Joint rolls with new rebrand

Restaurant partnering with Denver event producer Ryan Dykstra to bring EDM to NoCo

When it comes to owning a business, the proverb, “necessity is the mother of invention” definitely comes into play. Being able to revamp, rebrand or rebuild a business can make the difference between keeping the doors open and slapping that “closed for business” sign in the window.

Bryan Fyock, owner of The Ball Joint, is well versed in revamping, rebranding and rebuilding.

Since coming up with the concept of ball-based food in 2009, Fyock has worked to keep his restaurant rolling, first with a location in Penn-

sylvania in 2014 before moving to Colorado and partnering with the then Brix Brew House and Tap, now TightKnit Brewing Co., in Greeley in 2020.

When things didn’t pan out with Brix, Fyock moved his ball business to Loveland and opened up shop in a 112-year-old house at 434 N. Garfield Ave.

And then, came COVID.

As with many businesses, Fyock scrambled with how to keep the little restaurant open, turning to delivery and take-out only options.

While The Ball Joint still had a pulse, the business owner struggled to keep the restaurant thriving

However, the tide seemed

to turn for The Ball Joint in 2021 when Fyock and his crew were featured on the Cooking Channel’s “Food Paradise” show.

“Food Paradise” seeks out “must see spots across the country that have a one-of-a-kind dining experience,” the Cooking Channel says on its website. From pizza to bacon and seafood to deep-fried dishes, if it’s unique, unusual and basically a “food unicorn,” they want to film it.

At the time, producers from the Cooking Channel were in town shooting an episode of “Restaurant: Impossible” at another local business when they discovered The Ball Joint

Fyock and The Ball Joint’s spot was aired on the Jan 26 episode of “Food Paradise” in the U S as well as internationally. The show helped spread the word about the unique little eater in Loveland and curious foodies flocked to get a taste of Fyock’s cuisine.

Fyock rode that wave for as long as he could before he realized that, again, it was time to rejuvenate The Ball Joint.

“We are more than this little restaurant that got onto a cooking show,” Fyock said

This time, Fyock is looking to make The Ball Joint a place where people can eat, be entertained and walk

away with an experience

“We are now morphing and evolving into a food and beverage place with an entertainment venue,” Fyock explained.

Fyock has partnered with Denver’s premier entertainment producer, Ryan Dykstra, to bring electronic dance music, or EDM, to Loveland. EDM is a popular style of music intended for dancing to in clubs. The music typically has a repetitive beat and a synthesized backing track and is performed by a DJ using a variety of sound system equipment Dykstra’s resume is pretty impressive to say the least He’s worked with na-

A patio that sits behind The Ball Joint, 434N Garfield Ave , Loveland, will be the site of the first venue in northern Colorado to offer EDM using a state-of-the-art FunktionOne sound system

tional artists such as Perry Farrell, DJ Jazzy Jeff, The Crystal Method, Tommy Lee, DJ Scribble and many more Dykstra has also organized street promotions for the iconic Red Rocks and Fiddlers Green as well as produced the first largescale nightclub performance ever for the Glitch Mob at The Church Nightclub in 2008.

“I have organized over 4,500 events in the Denver Metro area,” Dykstra said. “I started handing out flyers in ‘93 and started producing my own events in 2000.”

Growing up and going to school in Fort Collins, Dykstra has a soft spot for northern Colorado communities

“I’m sensing a major shift in the number of people in northern Colorado for go-

ing out. They are excited to do cool new things,” Dykstra said.

Dykstra’s goal in partnering with Fyock is to make The Ball Joint one of Loveland’s and northern Colorado premiere venues for food and entertainment by bringing in national and international headliners

“A mutual friend introduced us, and I came out and tried the food and it was incredible and I really liked Bryan,” Dykstra said. “Another aspect was that I really liked the fact that it was happening in the backyard of a house. That is a throwback to everything in my world of entertainment and people going out.”

Whether you are a solo artist, a band, a DJ or any other style of musician, you pretty much got your start playing gigs in houses for friends, Dykstra said

“And this is a house party every time,” he said

Entertainment will be set up on the patio in the back of the house and the space can fit about 150 people.

Fyock and Dykstra are kicking off their partnership with a house party at 4 p.m. Saturday The event will not only introduce customers to The Ball Joint’s newest idea, but will unveil its state-ofthe-art Funktion-One sound system

“Denver is one of the number one dance music destinations in American and a lot of it has to do with the quality of the sound systems in the venue,” Dykstra said. “If you want to be taken seriously, you have to have a top sound system.”

F un k t ion- One wa s founded in 1992 by Tony Andrews and John Newsham, two highly regarded designers and manufacturers with numerous patents to their name The two were also credited with creating Turbosound in the 70s as

well as several other loudspeaker designs that have become the standard in the audio industry.

Currently, there are only 14 Funktion-One distributors across the U.S., making The Ball Joint a member of a special class of event centers

“The sound of Funktion-One system is so incredible; it’s the big ticket This will be the first time there will be a Funktion-One sound system in a northern Colorado nightclub, confirmed,” Dykstra said. “This sound system is so spectacular that people who are in the audio industry, who don’t necessarily like this music, will come just to be enveloped in this sound. It’s such another level experience.”

Some of the upcoming performances planned at The Ball Joint include:

• The Cure vs Depeche Mode 6 p m Thursday, April 27

• Wu Tang & Waffles with DJ Channell 10 a.m. Sunday, April 30.

• Panic at the Disco, My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy A Spectacular DJ Tribute 6 p.m. Thursday, May 4

• The Motown Mother’s Day Brunch 9 a m Sunday, May 14

• NOFX, Face to Face and Pennywise A Punk Rock DJ Tribute 6 p.m. Thursday, May 25.

Nowadays, it’s custom details that really help a home stand out from the crowd, and they’ve become a leading trend in home improvement – adding individuality to a new home, as well as dynamically upgrading an older home.

For owners looking to substantially elevate their living space, either with

hopes of adding to its resale value or simply making it a more pleasant environment, a variety of local service professionals can help provide some customized touches.

One-of-a-kind railings and ironwork

It’s unlikely that a typical modern home features the work of an old-fash-

ioned blacksmith, a craft that combines an eye for detail with traditional methods going back centuries

But if work from custom railings to ironwork enclosures for fireplaces seems like it would be ideal for your property, Otto Engel, owner and head blacksmith at Berthoud’s Innovation Forge,

can design and deliver absolutely one-of-a-kind pieces

“At Innovation Forge, we strive for precision and accuracy in every project, which is why every piece is hand-crafted by our skilled blacksmiths,” Engel says. “More importantly, we offer the ability to have full customization of many types of metal

parts, from bronze to high-carbon steel.”

Engel is uniquely qualified for the job, with extensive training in blacksmithing that’s led him to become a certified national instructor with the Artist-Blacksmith’s Association of North America. After studying welding at Front Range Community College, Engel – a native of Estes Park – got a degree in forged architectural ironwork at the American College of the Building Arts in Charleston, S C He also attended the artist blacksmithing program at England’s Her-

eford College of Arts, and followed that with internships at a variety of local design and jewelry businesses

Engel says that experience gives him plenty of different ideas when it comes to designing and forging truly customized architectural pieces for local homes, using fire and hand tools for the work. By forging each piece for a customer, that also adds to the strength and durability, and means a mixture of shapes and designs you won’t find in other metalwork

There’s a real artisanal

quality to his products, as well, from tree branch-infused railings to intricate detail work and fixtures.

Innovation Forge’s creations can also be scaled to any application, from a small fireplace to multi-level staircases

Customized shower enclosures set a home apart

If you ’ ve lived in homes where the shower stall is a plastic nightmare and the glass doors hardly work, you’re not alone And those replacement shower and tub doors you’ll find at big box

Scott Parsons, third-generation owner of Loveland’s Handy Glass Inc , can come to the rescue with an entirely customized glass enclosure for showers and tubs of any size. Especially homeowners who’ve decided to make the tub and shower a standalone showpiece, rather than that cramped, traditional enclosure from years gone by “We’re able to close off the front and side walls with clear glass that’s all custom sized and measured by us, ” Parsons says. “There’s a wide variety of hardware types and styles available, as well as sturdy sliding doors.”

With baths and showers becoming larger and wider, Handy Glass can accommodate a range of

styles, including open, locker room-styled designs, roll-in and handicap-accessible showers and every variation of swinging doors He’s even had clients create ninefoot-tall floor-to-ceiling glass in their homes; the objective is making everything more open and accessible, but still keeping water off the floor.

Parsons’ grandfather opened Handy Glass in 1960, and the company continues to do in-house window and screen repair, as well as commercial glass work and auto glass

Indoor Air Quality

Air quality is always a concern in Colorado. From pollutants and allergans to smoky summer air, ensuring clean breathable air within a home may be a priority. HVAC companies like McCreery and Sun in Greeley offer many options to choose from

You may want something portable that you can move with you from room to room if you have a smaller space or rent your home. These units can be moved from home to home as well Those who want to install systemic air quality control might find it worth while to ask about

STEPOUTYOURBACKDOOR

If you’re looking for a new lease on the life of your home, just step out the back door Blurring the lines between indoors and outdoors is a major trend this year, so why not use the space you already have? You can trick out your patio to add space, usefulness and fun to your house.

C2RS Contracting project manager Mike Bailey sees this as an ever-growing movement

as the demand for more livable space increases. He said, “There are some beautiful extensions being created as people discover new ways to use their outdoor areas. Things like outdoor kitchens, pergolas, backyard bars, and new ways to heat and cool outside are possibilities ”

The biggest outdoor space Bailey has helped create is a two-story pergola on a ranch

“It was a 2,000 square

foot pergola with two tiers,” he said “It really fit the aesthetic on the ranch The owner wanted it to reference the lines of the barn It had a vaulted ceiling in the top tier The rancher planned it so someday his daughter can get married in it. Of course, she’s only 17 now but he’s thinking ahead!”

Bailey has been creating outdoor kitchens. “People want cool cooking areas outside, with smokers and undercounter refrigerators. That’s one of the more affordable additions We encourage people to

use electric appliances because they’re efficient and safer. With gas appliances outdoors, people sometimes leave them on even a month before they catch the bill. And that can be really expensive ”

Outdoor bars are also trending. “This is a huge trend and there’s a lot that goes into it One of the toughest [parts] is creating an outdoor sink because it requires plumbing adaptations,” he said

Outdoor seating for entertaining includes fire pits for cooler weath-

er, fans for summer, patio coverings, elegant lighting and pergolas (although not usually two-story ones)

Although there are requests for big accordion-style doors leading to the patio area, Bailey said that they are very expensive and the structural renovation may be extensive The wind load in this part of Colorado means that a full renovation may be required to handle it “The accordion doors to the patio are extremely beautiful, people really have to understand that the really

good brands are a major consideration to their budget,” he explained

People usually request that the new outdoor areas are as big possible, and Bailey said space and budget constraints are the biggest considerations

The most important is the space required. Older homes may have more accessible space, and a newer construction has less space between neighbors “I grew up on a farm where the nearest neighbor was six miles away, ” Bailey said. “Now

some neighbors are 10 feet or 20 feet off each fence There’s less and less space outdoors and we can only put so much in that space.”

He said, “No one ever really wants to [share] their budget, but we need to have a relationship built so that we know how far this amount will go. People need to be up front and honest with themselves and their contractor I tell people ‘There will always be a surprise and a delay, so we need to budget for that The manufactures are still trying to get back

on track and nobody wants a delay, but that happens.’ You need to pick a person you want who understands what you need. Remember that the right equipment you put outdoors is the most expensive because it has to be rated for outdoors. We want to build it to last a lifetime, not just a season or two.” C2RS

Home grown community gardens

–grows more than produce

y Elise Oberliesen

Kelly Robenhagen, LCSW doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty when she pulls weeds from her backyard garden fact, her love of gardening led her to Loveland Youth Gardeners as executive director, a role she calls her dream job. Through community gardens, the non-profit organization teaches

young people about the importance of growing produce, learning leadership skills, and giving back to families in need of food

Question: What excites you most about your new role as Executive Director?

ANSWER: I get to take this foundation and build on the future I give credit to my colleagues and our staff Erica Wharton, program director and

Alex Humphreys, volunteer coordinator, because they are the heart of the organization and have put in a ton of work

Q: What led you to Loveland Youth Gardeners?

A: My long history of working with youth and families in the nonprofit sector. And feeling like my previous roles were reactive, as in helping young people after they had a poor view of themselves I thought it would

be better to help kids before they got to that place by giving them a sense of community. We help kids grow into their sense of self in a positive nurturing environment.

Q: What makes this program nurturing?

A: We run an urban farm, an environment that is very beautiful because it’s full of life, plants, animals, and birds Being in nature is inherently nurturing. It’s a space where you can

interact fully. Kids can touch and smell plants, which encourages curiosity and exploration

Q: Why are these urban gardens so healing?

A: There is so much research on the benefits of spending time outdoors and in nature. In some ways, the world has gotten so focused on technology that we lose out on connecting with the world around us We encourage youth to ground themselves in the environment They breathe, slow down and focus on the environment which is so healing for the brain.

Q: Do you personally see benefits from gardening?

A: During the height of lockdown, I found peace and purpose tending to my own garden it brought me so much calm, focus and joy And I want to spread this idea to young people. Gardening brings such a sense of joy and you can do this activity throughout your entire lifetime by making gardening a priority

Q: What do young people gain from the program?

A: Young people may not have a lot of experience in gardening or

farming, but then they get that spark of passion and carry that into adulthood

Q: What changes do you see in kids?

A: It has helped alleviate symptoms of depression, anxiety and isolation. And it increases their feelings of confidence.

LANDSCAPINGFORA ColoradoLife

How to Plan Your Next Lanscaping Project According to the Pros

As the sun is staying out later, the crocuses are blooming, and the birds are singing, spring is finally in the air We’re saying goodbye to winter and welcome to warmer weather, and many homeowners are beginning to daydream about tranquil backyards, inviting front

lawns, water features, and more. But to turn those dreams into reality, there are a few steps you need to take first. We talked to some local pros to find out what those steps are and why they matter

Find Your Why

Before you ever put a shovel into the ground,

ask yourself why you’re making changes to your current landscaping. “Ask yourself: How do I intend on using my landscape,” suggests Michael Krumdieck, the hardscapes manager at Cedar Supply in Fort Collins “Will you be using it for gardening? Outdoor living? Entertaining? Something else?”

Plan Ahead

“Preparation is the key to a long-lasting, beautiful landscape,” says Krumdiek “The more preparation you put into the project, the smoother it will come to light.” That means mapping out logistical details and nailing down every last detail of your vision

It’s okay to let your imagination run wild as long as the plan you come up with matches your budget, any HOA stipulations, and your personal preferences Krumdiek recommends nailing down a spending limit, finding out whether you’ll need approval from your HOA (and if you do,

obtaining it in advance), and getting clear on what you expect from anyone you hire to do the word “Ask yourself, ‘What are my minimum expectations on quality of work?” If they’re on the high side but you’re on a tight budget, know that you might have to shrink the project’s scope

Don’t rush through the design process, either. “Working with a well-designed plan ensures that no details will be left out,” says Krumdiek

Once you know exactly what you want to do and how you’re going to do it, make sure you’re prepared with the right tools “No matter what size your project is, having the right tools for the job will make your life easier. Consider renting equipment to make your life easier,” says Krumdiek

Your first consideration for your landscape should be how you plan to use it most.

Stay Within Your Budget

If you’re going to recruit professional help, get multiple quotes but resist the temptation to hire the company offering the lowest estimate. “If someone is charging way less than another company, chances are that corners are being cut,” says Krumdiek

If you find that your dreams are out of your budget, don’t be afraid to switch gears. According to Shane Lorenz, the General Manger at Crystal Landscape Supplies in Loveland, some budget-friendly ways to spruce up your landscaping include giving your space a thorough cleaning, including scrubbing the patio, removing weeds, and sweeping litter away Lorenz also suggests making planters out of old tires, installing a birdhouse to attract wildlife, or even making your own firepit.

Even something as simple as new patio furniture or a propane firepit can make all the difference in how you use and enjoy your landscaping.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU INSTALL A FIREPIT

We caught up with Matt Sisko, the general manager at Outpost Sunsport in Fort Collins to find out what homeowners need to consider before installing a new firepit

Size

“You need size and shape that fits the space,” Sisko tells My Windsor Magazine. Too big and you won’t have anywhere to sit. Too small, and you might find that your lawn dwarfs the structure

Material

Consider what’s going to last long-term “Porcelain tops and aluminum fire pits are very durable and will last for years of reliable use,” says Sisko.

Type of fuel

According to Sisko, “Propane and natural gas burn very clean and are easy to use with the use of a switch,” Additionally, they’re safe to burn during a fire ban.

Inspiration FORGREENRENOVATIONS

Use What You Got: How to Make Your Home Renovations

More Sustainable

When you think of green renovations in your home, your mind may leap to big-ticket items like solar panels and EV charging stations But whether you’re making over your kitchen or a bathroom (areas that have the biggest returns on investment), there are eco-friendly steps you

can take by either making use of what you already have or investing in materials that are built to last

According to a home improvement trends survey from LightStream, a consumer lender, 93 percent of homeowners see the benefits of undertaking renovations that have

positive impacts on the environment

With Earth Day approaching on April 22, we asked some local experts about trends that are both stylish and sustainable

Here are some ideas for sprucing up your home in an eco-friendly way:

Update Your Kitchen Cabinets

Your cabinets can have a major impact on your space. If you have existing cabinetry that’s in

good shape, but perhaps a little out of date, you can update them by replacing the door and drawer fronts or changing out the color of the cabinets, says Ethan Hall, owner of N-Hance of North Colorado.

N-Hance works with specialized, hazard-free chemicals to first clean the cabinets and frames.

“N-Hance can ‘refresh’ the stain and fix minor damage if you like the color of your cabinets and if they are in good shape,” Hall says. “We can also darken or even

lighten stain colors or paint over stains for a complete transformation.”

If your cabinet and drawer fronts are not in good shape or in a style you don’t like, the team can order new fronts in any style, then finish your existing cabinet boxes and the new fronts to match, he says Painting cabinets can be a major DIY task when you factor in adequate prep and drying time, but N-Hance’s system quickly cures the finish with ultra-violet lights The average kitchen cabinet refresh, stain or paint job is completed within five to seven days, Hall says.

Keeping Some of Your Bathroom Fixtures

The team at Re-Bath Northern Colorado gives customers the option of reusing some of their existing fixtures, whether that’s a vanity or toilet or, less often, a tub or shower base so long as there isn’t rust, cracks or stains

Most customers reach out because their existing tub, shower and surrounding area has been compromised with deterioration of grout, improper drywall installation, cracks or leaks. (Leaking fixtures, can cause lots of water waste and cost you big bucks on your water bill).

LANDLINE’SMOTORCOACHSERVICES

OFFERSSAMEBENEFITSASFLYING

Taking Landline from the regional to the international airport has the same benefits as flying except it’s in a motor coach.

“Effectively we’re a regional jet, but we’re operating on the ground,” said Nicholas Johnson, vice-president and head of commercial for Landline in Fort Collins “It’s really like a flight in every way except it doesn’t take off from the ground.”

Landline connects travelers from Northern Colorado Regional Airport and Breckenridge to Denver International Airport through its motor coach services It also provides connectivity services to major airport hubs in Minnesota, New

Jersey and Pennsylvania, targeting cities too far for mass transit and that lack regional jet services.

Using Landline allows travelers to skip several steps of going through the long lines and waits of international airport hubs They instead check their bags and, with pending TSA approval starting in Philadelphia, clear security screenings at their local airport Plus, by booking with Landline’s partner airlines, they get to collect their travel miles for future ticket purchases and travel under one itinerary.

“You don’t touch your bag again,” Johnson said.

“Your bag is automatically transferred ”

Travelers get a boarding pass and board the motor

coach, getting the first class experience of plenty of leg room (36 inches), free Wi-Fi and entertainment, in-seat power and onboard restrooms as they get a ride to the airport hub They arrive airside, able to board directly onto their connecting flight If there is a delay, such as from traffic or weather, their itinerary is protected and they’re rebooked to the next flight; plus, they get free parking at the regional airport

“It makes your travel day a lot less stressful,” Johnson said.

Landline serves an average of 100,000 travelers a year, employing 25 buses at four airport hubs The original hub was Duluth International Airport in Duluth, Minn , with a

connection to a regional airport in Minneapolis, started when the company was founded in Los Angeles in 2019 The partnership for that hub is with the Sun Country Airlines

The need for the Duluth and other hub connections came out of a shortage of pilots and aircrafts, the high cost of fuel and later the reduction of business travel during the pandemic. Landline added United Airlines at DIA in spring 2021 and in Newark, NJ, to Allentown, Pa., in summer 2022 and American Airlines in Philadelphia, Pa., to Atlantic City, NJ, and Allentown and Lancaster, Pa , also in summer 2022

“We can operate this market on one-tenth of

the cost of flying with the same elapse time,” Johnson said “We give savings back to the customer in the form of lower ticket prices ”

Landline also provides an airport shuttle service in Northern Colorado under the same name of Landline. That service runs up to nine times daily from the Northern Colorado Regional Airport to DIA and like a traditional shuttle service goes to any airline.

“We found Fort Collins and Loveland were very underserved,” Johnson said “We found there was an unmet need in addition to offering our premium integrated airline service ”

Greeley Chorale, Windsor Chamber Chorale plan performances in April

It’s not secret that northern Colorado is filled with talented musicians, composers and singers. From adults chorales to kids choruses to mixed groups, Greeley and Windsor are just two local communities that feature amazing vocal groups.

If you’ve not attended a performance of a local vocal group, you’re in luck because the Greeley and Windsor Chamber chorales are offering their end of season performances in April.

The Greeley Chorale is preparing to close out their season with Mostly Mozart at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Congregational Church, 2101 16th St. in Greeley.

The featured piece in the concert will be Mozart’s “Mass in C,” also known as “Coronation Mass.”

“This piece was written for the Archbishop of Salzburg, Mozart’s employer at the time, whose primary criterion for musical excellence was brevity,” Artistic Director Dr Galen Darrough explained. “While it employs full orchestra and soloists popular with the longer masses of the day, the musical ideas have been compressed to save time.”

The piece, shorter than a normal mass, will be performed during the first half of the concert with the orchestra and an organ.

For the second half, the group will present a variety of works from composers from the 16th through 21st centuries, including Brahms, Vaughan Williams, Faure, Mack Wilberg

as well as Marsha Norman and Lucy Simon, who wrote music and lyrics for the musical “The Secret Garden ”

“The second half (of the concert) runs the gamut when it comes to variety and there’s sure to be something for every musical taste,” Darrough said.

The Greeley Chorale was founded in 1964 as a community chorus under the direction of Dr. Howard Skinner. In 1970, the chorale merged with the Greeley Concerts Association as an adjunct of the Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra

The group became its own entity in 1974 and in 1978, The Greeley Chorale was incorporated as a nonprofit

The group is comprised of over 100 members and has performed at the 1988 World Expo, the Vienna International Choral Festival, World Youth Day, and the towns of Trunstadt, Germany and Chlumec, Czech Republic. The group is also a large part of local celebrations such as the Christmas Tree lighting ceremony in downtown Greeley, Cinco de Mayo celebrations and Greeley Stampede.

All ages are welcome to attend the concert.

Tickets are $22 for adults, $10 for students with a school I D and $18 per person for a group of 10 or more from a single purchaser Tickets can be purchased

online at www greeley chorale org/tickets, by calling (970) 351-4849, at the UNC Ticket Office in the Campus Commons at 1051 22nd St., Greeley or at the door on the day of the event.

The Windsor Chamber Chorale presents Songs from Around the World at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 30 at Bethel Lutheran Church, 328 Walnut St., Windsor.

The concert will feature special guests the Windsor Children’s Chorus and accompanist Patty Medbery.

The Windsor Chamber Chorale is a semi-audition group that performs two sessions a year under the direction of Dr Alise Brown Brown is an instruc-

tor of Music Education at the University of Northern Colorado, where she also received her Master of Music degree in Music Education and her Doctorate of Arts in Music Education.

Along with their seasonal performances, the group performs for local community retirement and care facilities.

All ages are invited to attend the concert and admission is a suggested donation of $10 or pay what you can at the door. Homemade sweets and goodies will also be for sale at the concert for $5 per bag

Dunning bringing balloons to Greeley

Event will help raise awareness for Life Stories

Allison Dunning, owner of Balloon Art by Merry Makers and the Balloon Boutique in downtown Greeley, has been working for more than a year to bring a unique and one-ofa-kind event to Greeley: the Big Balloon Build.

And when I say “Big Balloon Build” I mean big Close your eyes and imagine a room filled from floor to ceiling with colorful latex balloons of all shapes and sizes then multiply that by infinity and you pretty much have the Big Balloon Build.

The event gives nonprofits of all kinds a platform to use to educate their community and bring awareness to their specific cause and mission.

Every single Big Balloon Build is different, which not only makes the event fun to attend, but challenges balloon artists to really dig deep into their creative vaults to come up with new ideas and ways of making balloon sculptures.

Artists participating in the build donate their time and talents as well as pay all of their travel expenses to get to the build’s location.

Artists in the build aren’t “competitors, but friends” who come together to support a cause in a community, Dunning said.

Dunning has participated in three builds to date with the Greeley event being the first, and probably only, event she will host

Charities chosen for the Big Balloon Build use the events to raise funds and awareness about their cause and mission by offering the community a fun and unique opportunity to see amazing pieces of art

“It’s a magical experience,” Dunning said Depending on the event’s theme, balloon artists can use anywhere from 60,000 to over 100,000 balloons for the build Every build event

uses Qualatex balloons provided by Pioneer Balloons

And no, they don’t have to actually blow up that many balloons. Organizers contract with PremiumConwin to provide machines that help with inflation.

Some of the themes from past Big Balloon Builds include a carnival theme, an underwater theme, a holiday wonderland theme, a candy land theme and many other clever and creative themes.

Dunning has chosen a space theme for her event. With the universe being a vast unknown frontier, artists participating in the Greeley build will have endless creative license to build

whatever their minds can come up with That includes anything from aliens and spaceships to new planets and stars and everything in between.

“You know if you give us a little bit, we are going to take it,” Dunning said.

One of Dunning’s favorite pieces she’s seen at a build was the creation of a “granny frog” wearing a thong bikini.

“She was great, she was hilarious,” Dunning said.

Balloon artists from across the U.S. and around the world participate in the builds, each bringing their own unique perspective and skillset to the event

For attendees, the Big Balloon Build gives them an experience unlike any other and is often a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity since the event typically only takes place in a designated community once.

The Big Balloon Build concept was created by Stuart Davies who lives in Wales and travels around the globe helping organizers with their builds.

Davies started the Big Balloon Build in 2015 after seeing how the impact balloons could make on a community and charity.

“I started out on quite a small scale in Wales and then realized that other balloon artists wanted to do it,” Davies said

“My background is working with charities and as an instructor in the balloon industry I understood that there was a need for something like this where there was more purpose rather than ballooning for ballooning sake.”

The event provides artist with networking opportunities and the chance to form friendships with others in their industry.

“It’s kind of like an adult camp The majority of balloon artists work alone or are generally alone So there’s no one to talk to; there’s no support mechanism there,” Davies explained. “So this gives them an opportunity to feed their creativity, have a purpose for interacting with the community and be able to promote what their business does in their local area as well as the social element.”

Davies cycles new balloon artists into each build to help prevent the event from “becoming stale” and each balloon build incorporates lessons learned from previous events

“We ask the hard questions of the charity and the

host about what can we improve on, what can we do to make the next one the best,” Davies said “I know Colorado is going to be the best

“Although, I hope none

catch a peek of the display at 6 p.m. Friday July 6.

The festivities continue throughout the weekend with a breakfast event for kids, STEAM afternoon, a food truck and band night as well as general admission access

On Monday, July 24, artists and invited community members will gather to dismantle the display and pop, yes pop, each and every balloon before the event rolls out to its next destination.

As with any large-scale event, Dunning is looking for volunteers and sponsors specifically a title sponsor for the event.

The event offers a variety of sponsorship opportunities for businesses and organizations of all sizes. Sponsorship packages run from $1,000 up to $15,000, however, all sizes donations and sponsorships are welcome Volunteers are needed to help with admission check in, setting up events, answering questions from attendees and helping with the overall general operation of the event.

All ages of individuals as well as different group and civic organizations are welcome to sign up to volunteer with the Big Balloon Build.

For more information on sponsorship and volunteer opportunities, contact Cheryl Brown at Life Stories at (970) 353-5970

“We will be shining a light on Life Stories here in Greeley, Colorado but they have sister organizations all across the U.S. This is going to raise a huge amount of visibility on this issue,” Davies said.

“With balloon artists coming from across the U.S., they can say ‘this issue isn’t just in Greeley, it’s in our area,’ and have a more statewide and nationwide, global effect.”

Nonprofit to host Purple Ribbon Breakfast

Alternatives to Violence, ATV, is hosting its annual Purple Ribbon Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 25 at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Loveland Hotel, Conference Center and Spa, 4705 Clydesdale Park in Loveland.

The nonprofit provides shelter, advocacy, education and resources to people impacted by domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking.

Along with raising awareness about these issues, the event serves as a way to raise money for the organization

“Funds raised are primarily used to maintain our safehouse and for general operations,” explained Rose Marie Massaro, ATV Communications and Development manager.

Alternatives to Violence was originally founded in 1982 by Roxie Ellis and Pam Higgins as the Loveland Battered Women’s Task Force. The organization offered services such as a support group for abused women in Loveland and education about domestic violence, human trafficking and sexual assault Over its first year, the nonprofit assisted 10 families in escaping violence.

In 1988, the organization received a $242,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, which they used to purchase a house that was converted into separate apartments. Named the Transitional Learning Center, the dorm-style building was the first of its kind in Colorado.

Fast-forward to 2016, Alternatives to Violence was able to purchase its first safe house, featuring eight rooms with 22 beds

“Our safe house was at a 100% occupancy in 2022,” Massaro said

To date, the organization has assisted over 1,600 clients with advocacy, re-

sources and education, helping give people a path to recovery, healing and independence away from fear and abuse

In 2022 ATV opened the

land and southern Larimer County, they do work with local northern Colorado nonprofits such as A Woman’s Place in Greeley as well as the Crossroads Safehouse and Realities for Children out of Fort Collins to help provide services and resources to people in need.

The Purple Ribbon Breakfast will feature guest speakers Angela Rae Clark, a human trafficking survivor leader and author, and Vicky Paul-Bryant, a domestic violence advocate and survivor as well as cofounder of the popular Pastels on 5th event in Loveland Pastels on 5th is also a fundraiser for Alternatives for Violence

“A lot of people know Vicky as the co-founder of Pastels on 5th but they don’t know her backstory. They don’t know that the reason she started that event is because she is a domestic violence survivor herself,” Massaro said. “I think it will sort of help people connect the dots as to why she founded that event, which honestly is our biggest fundraiser.”

Renew Boutique that provides residential clients of all ages with clothing, shoes and other essential items at no cost.

“We set it up boutique style to give our clients a sense of normalcy. They have that opportunity to just browse through the boutique to get anything they want,” Massaro said. “The boutique serves two main purposes. Most of them come to our doorstep with just items they may have just grabbed and when they are ready to leave our safehouse, they may need a nice outfit for a job interview”

While the organization primarily serves Love-

While the topics of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking are not often openly discussed, organizers of the program hope to illustrate how critical these issues are and highlight the resources available to those in need in the northern Colorado area.

“We hope attendees leave the event inspired to take action and foster a community-wide response to help victims of abuse,” said Executive Director of Alternatives to Violence, Kari Clark. “This event is an opportunity to address an important issue that often remains not talked about, but talking about it is an important step in building community support and showing victims that help

While scheduling bi-annual preventive maintenance services with a professional HVAC company is one way to help keep your system running, there are several things homeowners should be doing in between, advises Jeff Richard, general manager for Northern Colorado Air Keeping the outside unit

clean and clear of debris such as leaves, sticks, grass clippings and dirt is vital to the helping the system perform correctly.

Remove all debris on and around the unit each time you do yard maintenance, and hose it down if dirt begins to accumulate, Richard explained Keep nearby plants trimmed back at least two feet from all sides of the unit to help maintain proper airflow

“It’s good to have your HVAC serviced in the spring because all the leaves, pine needles and everything all falls into the unit,” Richard said. “It’s always good to have it taken a part and cleaned, flushed out with water. We will check for bugs in the contactor and go through those parts and pieces ”

Keeping the inside unit clear of clutter is also im-

portant. The more items sitting around a unit, the more dust that can collect and eventually make its way into the vent system Clutter can also reduce air circulation, make it harder for techs to perform repairs and maintenance as well as cause the unit to perform inconsistently.

One of the easiest and most important things a homeowner can do to maintain their HVAC system is often the most overlooked: changing the air filter.

“Your air filter should be changed twice a year,” Richard said. “And I recommend checking it in between services and those replacements So that filter gets looked at four times a year ”

Air filters remove dust and other particles from

the air, preventing them from spreading throughout the home. When a filter is clean, more air is allowed to pass through which helps the system heat and cool more efficiently. When a filter is dirty, the HVAC system needs to work harder to push that air through, which in turn causes stress on the system as well as increased utility bills

You get what you pay for when it comes to air filters for HVAC systems. The cheaper you go, the less effective.

“The cheap filters you can get at hardware stores don’t protect anything,” Richard said. “There are so many different styles that we could talk filters for 100 days.”

Richard suggests opting for a pleated style air filter that is reinforced, which will not bend or twist A reinforced air filter will also prevent the filter from get-

ting sucked into the blower wheel and causing significant problems.

Air filters not only help protect and extend the life of HVAC equipment, they also help keep the air we breathe inside our homes free from pollutants and bacteria.

The HVAC industry has developed air filters that not only keep air free of dust, dirt and dander, but can eliminate odors, pollen and other particles that can be harmful to our health

Carbon-coated air filters are designed to remove odors, gasses and chemicals

from the air As air particles pass through the filter, they come in contact with the carbon in the filter and get trapped.

“These are called Merv16s and they are the best filters money can buy. They don’t make anything higher than this,” Richard said. “There is 95-feet of material in this that can trap dirt and other pollutants from the air. This is going to catch everything.”

Not only does the Merv16 filters save your HVAC system, it will also protect the people in the house, Richard added

Merv-16 carbon-coated filters run about $150 a piece, however, they typically only need to be changed once a year.

“Basically it’s an investment you are making once a year so that you can breathe correctly,” Richard said

If a Merv-16 filter is out of your price range, Northern Colorado Air, Inc has plenty of other extremely effective filters in a variety of price ranges.

“If you keep your house closed up with the proper amount of ventilation coming in, it can change people’s lives,” Richard said. “Filtration is not just going and buying a simple filter.”

Windsor business elevates entertaining in outdoors

As we begin to transition into spring and warmer weather, homeowners are starting to plan out their landscaping and gardening projects.

However, if you’ve never had the urge to try out your green thumb or your yard is in need of help that is way over your head and/or ability, then bringing in professionals may be something you want to consider.

Michael Nunez and Nico Galto, owners of EcoSpring Landscaping LLC, specialize in a variety of landscaping needs including designing outdoor living spaces, installing and/or renovating irrigation systems, building raised garden beds, designing custom hardscapes, building pergolas, placing rock, constructing fences and more.

“Garden boxes are something we really enjoy doing,” Galto said

The company likes to work with homeowners to incorporate a variety of landscaping features such as sod, mulch and rock, giving yards pops of different color and texture.

“We definitely work with homeowners on the projects they want to do, so one of us will be at the job site at all times,” Nunez said.

Most recently, Nunez and Galto designed an outdoor kitchen for a client in Kechter Farm in Fort Collins. They incorporated custom stonework, lighting, seating and more for the project

“It was just a regular-sized backyard and to

be able to fit all of this into it, the homeowner and Nico did a lot of planning and adjustments,” Nunez said.

EcoSpring Landscaping works with local concrete companies and fencing companies to provide customers with a complete quote for any sized project they are looking to do.

“It saves homeowners and instead of having three different contractors, you just meet with us,” Nunez said.

The duo work on new construction projects that may have zero landscaping as well as established homes, where owners may want a revamp or update to their landscaping.

EcoSpring Landscaping not only serves Windsor, but many of the cities across the northern Colorado region, including Loveland and Fort Collins,

as well as down into Denver.

Nunez and Galto have been working in the landscaping industry for over 15 years

The business owners initially met while working for another landscap-

“When we started in 2019, we started with just a 1994 GMC Suburban and we would rent U-Haul trailers,” Nunez said, laughing. “So we’ve improved a lot. Now we have two trucks, a dump trailer we definitely have been growing every year.”

While the COVID pandemic hinder many businesses, Nunez and Galto experienced the opposite effect

As more people transitioned to working from home, they started to take more of an interest in getting outdoors and enjoying scenery, especially when it came to enjoying the outdoors from their own yard.

That combined with the company’s quality of work and positive word-of-mouth referrals, Nunez and Galto’s business began to rapidly bloom and grow.

“We always knew we wanted to go out on our own,” Galto said “To begin with just bare dirt and then see the homeowner come out and be excited, that’s what we really enjoy about what we do.”
