Dear Friends, During the past year, supporters like you stood with us as we redefined what it means to provide care, no matter what. Through one challenge after another, your tireless support and encouragement kept us steady and focused on our mission. You transformed obstacles into triumphs and built new strength and resilience, despite the odds. When COVID-19 continued to jeopardize the in-person care and education we provide, you powered up our imaginations and helped us pivot toward solutions that brought us closer to our vision of care without boundaries. With your help, we launched a Virtual Care Center to ensure efficient, accessible telehealth services for our patients now – and into the future. And, thanks to your support, our Education department launched a Virtual Education Library, which helps people access information about sexual and reproductive health anytime, from anywhere. You made it possible for us to hold the line against opponents who tried to capitalize on a global pandemic to limit access to reproductive health care. At every turn, you ensured we had the resources to fight back against harmful legislation and unnecessary regulations in order to keep our doors open and continue serving our patients. Even in a trying year, you enabled us to expand our services to better meet the needs of trans, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming patients in our community by launching Gender Affirming Care in November 2020. And we’re proud to say that Gender Affirming Care is only one of many ways we are doubling down on our commitment to eliminating disparities by centering the needs of southwest Ohioans. This past year, we also welcomed a bilingual educator who is focused on outreach and education to better serve growing communities of Hispanic and Latinx people in our region. And, we’re excited to share that our commitment to infusing equity and inclusion into every aspect of our work and organization got a big boost, thanks to the generosity and commitment of our partners and supporters. No doubt, the road ahead will not be easy or obstacle free. But, together, hand in hand with supporters like you, we have faith that our shared strength, commitment, and imagination will enable us to survive and thrive. No matter what. In Solidarity,

(JAN ‘20 - JAN ’22)

Donor Spotlight: Major Gifts

Called to Give: Donors Step Up to Support Gender Affirming Care Jay Shatz and Stan Elliott are proud to be longtime supporters of Planned Parenthood. “For us, it’s always been about equity,” says Jay. “We feel that access to reproductive rights is at the cornerstone of making our community a better, safer place to live.” Over the years, Jay and Stan have given time, treasure, and talent to support Planned Parenthood, but it was only recently that they felt called to make a financial commitment that truly goes above and beyond: $120,000 over three years to support gender affirming care in Southwest Ohio. “As two gay men who were closeted for decades, we know what it’s like to not be able to be your true self – how painful that is, how limiting that is, and how unacceptable that is,” shares Jay. Jay and Stan were proud to see Planned Parenthood step up to meet this pressing need in the community, and they both trusted that the organization would provide high-quality, nonjudgmental, and compassionate care. Specifically, Jay and Stan’s gift has helped fund the patient navigator role, which is crucial to providing wrap-around support for patients seeking gender affirming care. These patients may face any number of complex financial, legal, logistical, social, and emotional challenges in their journey. Since gender affirming care services launched in November of 2020, Jay and Stan have found it deeply gratifying to see the impact of their gift: “It was clear from the minute Planned Parenthood began offering these services that this care is needed,” says Jay, “And it was amazing to see how quickly patients have come to trust Planned Parenthood to provide it.” “We’re clearly at a time when it’s essential that people like us step up to support the programs we believe in. It’s critical to the future of Planned Parenthood, and all the patients who rely on us.”

Remembering Morry: A Friend to the End Morris Passer died peacefully on November 20, 2020, just shy of his 91st birthday. Morry (or “Mo” as he is affectionately known by many) was a longtime friend and supporter of Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio. In 1992 Morry, retired from SHV North America and was elected to the Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Board of Directors. Though retirement brings relaxation and respite for most, Morry’s marked the beginning of decades of volunteer work on behalf of Planned Parenthood and a host of other local nonprofit organizations. Morry once said he was “seduced” by two deeply involved board members, Sue Ransohoff and Carol Weihl Levinson, to share his expertise in finance and administration with Planned Parenthood. Over time, his passion for the organization only grew. Underlying his commitment were deeply held beliefs – that a person has the right to manage their fertility and that every child should be wanted and loved. In time, Morry shared his passion for Planned Parenthood by recruiting the next generation of board leaders, like past board chair and current board member, Carol Kabel. “I owe my passion for Planned Parenthood to Morry. He’s the reason I got involved. He had a keen mind, and he was a die-hard Planned Parenthood supporter. He didn’t just throw money at the causes he cared about; he did the work to make them stronger.” - Carol Kabel Morry once said that he wanted to be remembered as “a good person, a loving friend, and fun to be around.” There’s no do doubt, he was those things, and more – a loving father and grandfather, a devoted husband, and a person who left a deep and lasting impact on the organizations he believed in and everyone who knew him. For all you’ve done for Planned Parenthood – and so many others – thank you Morry. You will be remembered, and you will be missed.

In Awe: A Gift to Honor the Life & Legacy of Marian Spencer If you ask Jean Sepate about her involvement with Planned Parenthood, she’ll ask you if you want the short version or the long version. After all, she says, “It’s been a love affair for over 50 years.” Like many people, Jean first walked through the doors of Planned Parenthood as a patient: “I grew up in Clifton Heights in the 60s and when I was 18 [I] realized that I could not pray on Sunday to not get pregnant, I walked to Planned Parenthood.” Jean eventually got married to Peter Djuric and moved to Norfolk, then to Chicago, and she loved the Planned Parenthood affiliates in both cities. When she returned to Cincinnati, she worked as Director of Social Services for Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio for five years. Later, she served on the Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Board of Directors, then the Planned Parenthood Greater Cincinnati Region Foundation Board and that’s when she met the Foundation Board President, Marian Spencer. “I was in such awe of Marian,” recalls Jean. “My whole adult life, I had admired her. She was somebody who never gave up the fight for Civil Rights. She lit up a room when she entered with her smile and that sparkle in her eyes. She remembered everyone’s name, and she ran a board meeting better than anybody I had ever met.” Peter was also heavily involved with Planned Parenthood, attending every rally, volunteering often and serving on the Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio and Planned Parenthood Federation of America Medical Advisory Boards. When Marian passed away on July 9, 2019, Jean and Pete wanted to honor her life and legacy with a gift in her memory. “After she died, we wanted people to remember Marian and her commitment to Planned Parenthood,” says Jean. “Marian did so much to elevate the status of Planned Parenthood in the community – because people trusted her and listened to her. If she thought something was good, if she believed in something, other people felt they could trust and believe in it, too.” Jean and Pete had just one stipulation for their gift; they wanted a plaque and photo of Marian to be placed in the lobby of the Mt. Auburn Health Center. “We wanted people who came to our health center to see her warm, beautiful face and to feel and know that this most magnificent person was welcoming them,” Jean said. Thanks to Jean and Pete’s generous gift, Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio was able to join a community-wide effort to create and install the statue honoring Marian Spencer at John G. and Phyllis W. Smale Riverfront Park. And, thanks to the plaque that now hangs in our lobby, no one who walks through our doors will forget Marian Spencer’s belief in the mission of Planned Parenthood or her service to the community. 7

Education The Sexual Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS) has established National Sex Education Standards to outline the information middle school students should be taught. However, only 7.2% of students in Ohio received instruction in all 20 comprehensive sex education topics. Perhaps more shockingly, the Ohio Revised Code does not include any requirement for sex education to be medically accurate or comprehensive. Thankfully, Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio and the Ohio Center for Sex Education are dedicated to educating the youth in our region. This team is constantly looking for new ways to reach different audiences. Last year, this dedication manifested in a new and unique way: a summer camp for middle-school-aged youth. In 2021, the Ohio Center for Sex Education team served Cincinnati’s youth by offering the very first Camp MEE – Camp Movement, Enrichment, and Empowerment. This special summer camp brought middle school aged youth from Cincinnati together for one week in August to learn about a wide range of important topics, from sexual health to internet safety to alcohol/drugs and everything in-between. Households whose child participated in 2021 reported new conversations about boundaries, healthy relationships, sexual orientation, and sexual harassment. The response from parents and campers was clear: 2021 Camp MEE was a success! In 2022, we are excited to announce the expansion of this critical service. Our Education team will be offering two summer camps – one in Dayton in June and a second in Cincinnati in July. We are so excited to bring youth in these two cities together for a week of summer fun and important conversations.

Coming in 2022 – Ambassadors of Health! In 2021, our Education team worked hard to train 8 Spanish-speaking health ambassadors as part of the Embajadores de Salud program! This community leadership programs trains participants to educate their peers about health, advocacy, communication and answering tough questions. So far, participants have been trained on circles of sexuality, gender and sexual identity, sexual and reproductive anatomy, consent, healthy relationships, communication, birth control methods, STIs and abortion. Ambassadors will also be trained on intimate partner violence, pleasure, porn literacy, avocation for sex education, and talking to youth about sex. In 2022, we look forwarded to training even more ambassadors and realizing the benefits of their critical conversations in the community!

To date, our doulas have served 886 patients - 172 of those clients were served in the procedure room. Here are the experiences of a few of our doulas. ”I helped a mother of 3 through her procedure today and it was really a growing experience for me. This was the first person I had helped that was having a really tough time with this and it seemed to help her tremendously to just talk about it. I think it was really reassuring to get the validation that she was doing something selfless for herself and her family by putting her health first and I found it both challenging and rewarding.” “Right when I came in I was asked for by someone who was very anxious and I was able to sit with them and we chatted until it was time for the procedure, during, and after and they were very thankful and expressed that they were lucky to have picked to come here and that PPSWO felt very inclusive and they felt safe....” “I was able to have a conversation with someone in the waiting room and follow up with them in sub waiting room [regarding] their questions and concerns about abortion at 17-18 weeks of pregnancy and how safe the procedure is, in general. The conversation was fully guided by the questions of the client and I was able to direct them back to who had referred them (their doctor) and that their doctor was someone they trusted and felt confident with in the referral. Normalizing that it was not uncommon for someone to seek out the procedure at that point was reassuring for the client. We connected over being parents and they shared that caring for their current child… [is] part of their decision making process.” “The staff at the clinic are so welcoming and it’s always amazing to help out in a place where they value everyone including the doulas.”

“I am a non-binary person who doesn't usually 'present' as the gender I am wishing to transition to, I've never once felt out of place or put off or discriminated against because of the way I do or don't present myself.”

“My experience at Planned Parenthood was beyond exceptional. The staff was professional and helpful. I felt like I was listened to the whole time and all of my concerns were taken seriously. I was given educational material that suited my situation. This was my first visit to a Planned Parenthood and I was very impressed. Keep doing the great work you do for people!”

“The doctor who placed my IUD was amazing... She told me everything she was going to do before she did it, and listened to me if I asked for a break. She communicated through the entire process with me, which meant a lot knowing she probably does that procedure all day long.”

“The staff who saw me were incredibly kind and patient with me, as I was struggling emotionally with the trauma that brought me in to be seen. They went above and beyond to be sure that I had all the resources Planned Parenthood provides as well as additional community resources. They were compassionate and caring to the highest degree.”

“This course gave us a great opportunity to talk openly about the topics and to see the areas I need to work with him. I wanted to give you feedback, as a parent, of how much this pilot course has helped me and my son to learn from each other and to connect. I am so grateful to you and your team for thinking about ways to help our special teens.”
