A Message to Our Community

Dear Planned Parenthood Northern California supporter, Our highest principle at Planned Parenthood Northern California is to offer high-quality, nonjudgmental, compassionate care and education. No matter what. Some years, we are lucky enough to do our jobs in peace. At other times, we face great challenges that test our dedication.

After the deadly attack at our sister affiliate in Colorado Springs last November, we were flooded with messages of love and support. Many asked if the tragedy would affect our work at 20 health centers and three satellite sites. Some wondered if we would scale back our sex education and community services in schools, community organizations, and rural areas.

But we immediately thought of the clients who depend on us every year, each with a story that is intimate and unique. Where would they go?

• What about the teenager who was coming in for prenatal care? She couldn’t wait!

• Who would help the young person scheduled for an STD test? They shouldn’t wait!

• And what about the man who wants to prevent HIV infection? Or the woman traveling for hours across several counties for an abortion? What about them?

Many of the more than 100,000 clients we see in a year cannot access any other medical provider. For nearly 55,000 others, our community services and education staff are the only people they can trust. And more than 40,000 passionate supporters count on us to protect and expand sexual and reproductive rights and to fight for reproductive justice.

We have every intention of honoring each person’s confidence in us. This is especially true as Heather Saunders Estes steps down in December, 2016, after 37 years of service as CEO. As we celebrate our 100th anniversary year, we honor her, along with our past leaders, and we are assured of the continuity of our mission. We have accomplished so much with her vision and are very confident that her legacy of high-quality, innovative, and sensitive care will continue to flourish at our organization.

We will not waver. Our doors — and hearts ­— will stay open. Because dispensing truth with compassion is what we do at Planned Parenthood Northern California.

Heather Saunders Estes President and CEO

HEALTH. NO MATTER WHAT. We have always been innovators in clinical practice, and this year was no different.

We offered affordable services to over 100,000 people over the past year at 23 locations — and we continue to seek ways to improve access to our high-quality care.

HIV Prevention is Our Business!

Starting in March, our 20 full-service health centers began to offer PrEP and PEP. These medications can prevent HIV infection before or after an exposure. Clients who want to prevent infection can see us to get prescriptions and learn about effective ways to reduce the risk of contracting the virus.

Our expert providers are innovators in clinical practice.

The medications are highly effective, but also very expensive for clients paying out of pocket. For those clients without insurance coverage, we can happily assist them in determining if they are eligible for public insurance or a medication assistance plan for uninsured, low-income individuals.

Evidence-Based Innovations Our new research division allows us to break ground with evidence-based innovations in our clinical practice, counseling, and case management. Thanks to our new Director of Clinical Research, we participated in multiple studies including research on the efficacy of medical abortion to 70 days and women’s interest in PrEP (completed in conjunction with the University of California San Francisco).

Client Care We continue to focus on the client experience in health centers, and have created new systems and deployed new technologies to decrease wait times and improve clients’ satisfaction, while maintaining high-quality care.

Impact in Your Pocket We have harnessed the power of technology with “Planned Parenthood Direct,” a mobile-based app that was launched in 2015 to offer discreet STD testing. This year, we expanded the services available on the app to include convenient prescriptions for twelve months of birth control pills, and fast attention to treat painful UTIs (urinary tract infections).

We use telemedicine and technology to enhance our impact.

TEACH. NO MATTER WHAT. There’s no better way to show love than to teach and learn with passion and humility. Planned Parenthood Northern California staff reached approximately 55,000 students and community members through case management services, educational presentations, outreach events, counseling sessions, and peer education groups.

Graduation Celebration We are filled with admiration for the 37 participants who graduated from our Healthy Families America, Cal-Learn, and Adolescent and Family Life Planning/Positive Youth Development programs in Napa and Solano Counties.

We were deeply honored to win the “Absolutely Fabulous Marching Contingent” award.

Proud to Serve All Planned Parenthood Northern California marched louder and prouder than ever before in the 2016 San Francisco Pride Parade with over 250 staff and volunteers — our largest contingent to date.

We are committed to dismantling all attacks on reproductive rights and justice, including those that disproportionately impact LGBTQIA communities, immigrants, and any groups that face barriers to quality care.

Rural Community Outreach Our service area includes busy cities and peaceful small towns. We customize our programs and services to better serve all people. The rural communities we serve have benefitted from the California Personal Responsibility Education Program (also known as “CA PREP”) in Humboldt and Shasta Counties. The main goal of this program, funded by the California Department of Public Health, is to reduce rates of births and STDs, including HIV, among underserved youth populations. Our team of highly skilled health educators reached 892 students — exceeding our outreach goal in both counties.

Promotores attend a “Breast Health — Zumba” event to share information on breast health.

Breast Health en Español Since 2013, Promotores (community health workers) from Planned Parenthood Northern California have incorporated breast health information into events and workshops. In 2015, we recruited and extensively trained five new Promotores in sexual and reproductive health with

a focus on breast health and education.

Because of their deep connections and understanding of the populations we serve, Promotores have proven to be effective community health advocates. This year, we reached 1,389 individuals.

U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer, recipient of our first-ever Lifetime Achievement award, spoke before more than 300 guests at our Acts of Courage gala honoring the brave individuals, donors, allies, and generations of clients who fight for reproductive justice.

It was a pleasure to host an action-provoking intergenerational reception in April to discuss Peggy Orenstein’s newest book Girls and Sex: Navigating the Complicated New Landscape. The lively forum took place at Book Passage in Marin and drew 70 local supporters to reflect on this timely topic. Parents, children, and families came together for a riveting dialogue between Ms. Orenstein, esteemed sexual health educator Charis Denison, and a local high school student.

The Marin Community Foundation provided an inspiring wrap-up.

Diane Dillon, Lou Fernandes (former Board member), Suzy Narducci (current member of the Napa Valley Board of Advocates and former PPNorCal Board Chair), and Elsa Vare all StandUp! for health care access in Napa Valley.

Napa Takes a Stand Our annual StandUP! event in Napa was joyfully attended this year by 145 strong supporters of sexual health and reproductive freedom. The event uniquely connects our community through laughter and we were treated to thought-provoking humor from BATS Improv, a non-profit theater company. A truly special evening!

Centennial Gala Up among the beautiful North Coast redwoods, our devoted board of advocates serving the Humboldt area, along with our Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers, hosted 200 friends and supporters in April at our 2016 Centennial Gala, A Choice Affair.

ACT. NO MATTER WHAT. California Leads the Way For the fourth year in a row, California has led the way to expanded access to reproductive health care and education through robust advocacy and legislation.

These legislative victories will improve the health of communities across our state: • Inclusive, up-to-date information on comprehensive sexual health education and HIV education for middle school and high school students; • Increased access in underserved communities by enabling women to obtain hormonal birth control through mobile and web applications; and

Congressman Mike Thompson visits our Vallejo health center in September.

Congressman Jared Huffman showed his support for Planned Parenthood on his Facebook page and told his constituents: “I stand with Planned Parenthood.”

• Deletion of one of California’s last-remaining TRAP laws (Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers)

Pink Out Day On September 29, the Planned Parenthood “PinkOut” National Day of Action, saw a massive wave of support from coast to coast. Our event in San Francisco turned out 150 fabulous local supporters at Virgil’s Sea Room in the Mission District.

We collected 79 heartfelt stories about our compassionate care. Both #PinkOut and #StandwithPP were trending topics nationally and globally that day ­— and a picture from our event was featured in Glamour magazine.

Capitol Day Over 450 volunteers, staff, and advocates painted Sacramento pink for our annual Capitol Day sponsored by Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California. Volunteers, activists, and staff visited with thirteen legislators from our service area to talk about improved access to birth control, telemedicine for reproductive care, and the renewed importance of protecting privacy and safety at our health centers.

Millennial Power Former Assemblymember Patty Berg celebrates at our Choices Breakfast in Humboldt County.

North Coast Celebration Over 150 supporters in Humboldt County attended this year’s Choices Breakfast, commemorating the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to legalize abortion in Roe v. Wade. Celinda Lake, President of Lake Research Partners, shared insights about state and national polls and messaging. We were thrilled to honor former Assemblymember Patty Berg with a lifetime award for her tireless commitment to Planned Parenthood.

We were honored to co-host the 12th Annual Young Women’s Conference in San Francisco in October, along with Senator Mark Leno. The all-day conference gathered 200 young women, explored the theme “OWN IT! Your Body, Mind & Life,” and included remarks by Senator Leno, followed by a workshop led by our Community Services and Education department.

The Medea Project performed a stirring tribute to Planned Parenthood’s role in our society.
