MISSION STATEMENT Planned Parenthood Northern California champions healthy communities and increases access to quality health care, information, and reproductive freedom by providing medical services, education, and advocacy.

Each year, we serve over 150,000 adults and young people in 20 counties across Northern California, from San Francisco to Del Norte County.

Dear Planned Parenthood Northern California supporter, With one year behind us as Planned Parenthood Northern California (PPNorCal) and nearly 100 years since the first Planned Parenthood was founded in Brooklyn, New York, it’s a good time to reflect on our past, present, and future. Today, we are more effective than ever as the premier provider in the country of birth control, cancer screenings, abortion, and sex education. And just as we pledged in 1929, when our first center opened in San Francisco, we still are strong advocates for sexual and reproductive self-determination for all.

So much has changed over the decades. Take contraception for instance; in June, we marked the 50th anniversary of the United States Supreme Court decision that began making birth control legal in this country.

Planned Parenthood in Connecticut led the fight, and access to birth control immediately helped to unlock economic opportunity, education, and more for millions of Americans.

This broad positive impact is one reason why the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) named family planning, including access to modern contraception, one of the 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century.

Still, some things have not changed much. Our conviction that people can (and should be) trusted to make private, well-informed decisions about sexuality, family planning, and childbearing continues to draw fire. It’s not the first time, and it won’t be the last, that we are the target of a fraudulent smear campaign. We will not be deterred.

So, take a bow for our shared success through the years. The highlights inside this report were made possible by you. Your support fuels us and makes possible life-changing work like: n Health care serving over 100,000 clients with over 200,000 visits for family planning and birth control services, cancer screenings, and STD testing, hormones for gender transition, PrEP – a daily pill to prevent HIV infection, prenatal care, and more; n Sex education programs and case management services for 55,000 youth, teens, parents, and other adults that are effective, medically accurate, and age-appropriate; n Online connection to 40,000 people across Northern California who rely on us to engage and inform them on reproductive health, rights and justice.

CLIENT SERVICES

Our new app, Planned Parenthood Direct, gives clients direct contact with expert clinicians and a convenient way to get tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia, two very common and treatable STDs.

Our doors are open to all – regardless of immigration or insurance status. We spread the word around the Bay Area with beautiful billboards, transit shelter posters, and radio ads in Spanish.

Our friendly and dedicated staff means everything to our clients and to our success. Here is our team at the Concord health center.

Planned Parenthood is the most trusted sexual and reproductive health care provider in this country. We provide birth control, lifesaving cancer screenings, abortion, and other highquality health care and our staff is the best in the country.

We are especially proud of these accomplishments: n Thanks to donors, activists, and supporters, our newest health center in Eureka opened in August 2014.

With the addition of Humboldt, Trinity, and Del Norte Counties, we now serve adults and youth in 20 counties.

n Evidence-based primary care for a limited range of conditions is now available at five of our health centers.

This is especially great news for our low-income clients.

By taking care of primary care concerns we can take better care of clients who may not have other providers. n In addition to testing and education, our health centers now treat clients for syphilis or syphilis exposure. Syphilis is on the rise throughout the U.S., with San Francisco among the most affected metropolitan areas. n Hormone therapy for gender transition is now available in our Redding, El Cerrito, Vacaville, and Walnut Creek centers. We are committed to serving people of all gender identities and expression. n PPNorCal now offers prescriptions for PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis). PrEP is a daily pill regimen to prevent HIV infection in high-risk individuals. We provide prescriptions for the medication following CDC guidelines. PrEP is covered by Medi-Cal and we assist uninsured individuals with getting the medication through a patient assistance program from the manufacturer.

Our staff saw nearly 100,000 clients for more than 200,000 health care visits across our 20-county service area.

UCATION

Planned Parenthood provides education programs that are medically accurate, bias-free, and developmentally appropriate for a wide variety of individuals and groups.

Our staff reached 55,000 students and others through case management services, presentations, outreach events, counseling sessions, and peer education groups.

Here are some highlights:

hen I was 14, I was a college-bound straight A student. I loved learning and had my whole life ahead of me. And then, I found out I was pregnant. Everything about my life turned upside down.

I could not even legally work.

I would mow lawns and do odd jobs to earn money. My lifesaver came when I was steered to Planned Parenthood where I met Delores, my case manager...

I did graduate, attended community college, received four AA degrees, and earned my Bachelor’s of Nursing.

Next month, I will complete both my Master’s of Nursing AND my MBA. I did it because I had the support of Planned Parenthood.”

n Our San Francisco education team reached 1,867 students and individuals in San Francisco, and our community services and outreach programs reached an additional 22,732 more at public, private, charter, and alternative schools (5th – 12th grade), and colleges and universities. Classes and workshops are available for parents, caregivers and families, providers and professionals, incarcerated adults, homeless populations, teachers, and LGBTQ youth. n We believe that reproductive rights are LGBTQ rights.

Our largest contingent yet of 150 PPNorCal staff and supporters proudly marched in San Francisco Pride, one of the largest celebrations of its kind in the world.

The march was especially joyous this year after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that our Constitution guarantees a nationwide right to marriage for all people. PPNorCal also offered information and conversation at the Trans March, Dyke March, and Pride weekend events; the Gay Straight Alliance Youth Empowerment Summit; UCSF Young Women’s Health and Leadership Summit; and Senator Mark Leno’s Young Women’s Conference. n Spare Change Peer Education and Teen Theatre Troupe, a well-established and highly regarded classroom and community based sexual health education and teen pregnancy prevention program, performed a total of 12 shows reaching over 1,200 individuals and community members in the Humboldt County area.

California law bans school districts from pushing abstinencebefore-marriage programs or teaching that abstinence is the only safe way to prevent pregnancy. We could not agree more!

PUBLIC AFFAIRS We were joined by Assemblymember Tony Thurmond, (third from right), Chair of the Budget Subcommittee on Health and Human Services, who spoke about his commitment to health care access for all Californians and increasing Medi-Cal reimbursement rates.

We marked the 42nd anniversary of Roe v. Wade with keynote speaker Jon O’Brien, President of Catholics for Choice.

California continues to lead the nation on legislation in full support of sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Our commitment to expand access to abortion and sexual and reproductive health care has never been stronger.

Here are some key moments from the past year:

n Digital media continues to be one of the most effective ways that we connect with our supporters, especially young people and people of color. Through online actions to increase engagement, advocacy and storytelling, our online supporters grew by 10,000, and we had more than 4,000 new supporters join our Facebook page. Hundreds of online supporters also turned out for a variety of inspiring campaigns, including LGBTQ Pride, Women’s History Month, Mother’s Day, and Get Yourself Tested. n This year, as in years past, a dedicated group of volunteers in Napa answered our call for help as we faced two 40-day campaigns of harassment and intimidation by extremists. A group of 50 trained escorts filled 150 shifts outside our health center to make sure that every client who comes to our Napa health center is safely able to access high-quality preventive care. We are deeply grateful for these savvy and compassionate supporters. n Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California’s Annual Capitol Day was held in June and PPNorCal brought 100 activists, staff, and community partners to Sacramento for a full day of events and 11 lobby visits with our legislators.

n Hundreds of supporters turned out in Arcata for our “Choices Breakfast” commemorating the anniversary of Roe v. Wade and featuring the inspiring words of Jon O’Brien from Catholics for Choice.

With every passing year we build a bigger and stronger movement for reproductive health and justice in California.

ACTS OF COURAGE Our fourth annual gathering in support of reproductive health and education services was held in February at the St. Regis Hotel in San Francisco. The inspiring evening featured a lively conversation between Cecile Richards, President of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) and Katha Pollitt, author of Pro: Reclaiming Abortion Rights, moderated by moderated by radio host Rose Aguilar.

Shannon Matesky, poet, activist, and teacher, electrified the audience with her spoken word performance.

Proceeds from the event benefit PPNorCal and the Planned Parenthood Northern California Action Fund, our sister organization devoted to hard-hitting advocacy.

STAND UP! Hundreds of supporters turned out at the beautiful Artesa Winery to sample world-famous wines and enjoy a performance by Lizz Winstead, co-creator of The Daily Show. In addition to exciting live and silent auctions, our “Fund-A-Need� project raised funds to hire an educator fluent in Spanish and English for Napa County.

The evening was made possible thanks to the fantastic leadership of the Stand UP! Committee: Stacey Bressler, Piper Cole, Nancy Duckhorn, Melinda Mendelson, Judy Myers, Suzy Narducci, Barbara Niemann, Beth Painter, and the Napa Valley Board of Advocates. A very special thank you is also due to our generous guests and volunteers.

Over 150 supporters came out to the Plaza Grill in Arcata in April for “A Choice Affair,” a black-and-whitethemed masquerade dinner. Guests enjoyed a lively reception while perusing silent auction lots and relishing the camaraderie of Planned Parenthood supporters. The evening ended with a live auction and the event raised much-needed funds to support programs like Spare Change, our peer education and teen theatre troop for Humboldt, Del Norte, and Trinity counties.

CAMPAIGN SUCCESS = $50MM Support generations of care at Planned Parenthood Northern California. Together, we can protect and provide health care and education that empowers adults and young people — no matter what.

In 2014, PPNorCal Action Fund (the political arm of PPNorCal) put its money where it counts by engaging in its largest electoral effort to date, along with the other California Planned Parenthood political organizations. PPNorCal Action Fund ran innovative micro-targeted online electoral ads that made two million plus impressions and engaged 60 volunteers to make 11,000 phone calls in Contra Costa, San Francisco and Eureka. By raising $75,000 in two months, PPNorCal Action Fund set another record for the most contributions into its PAC (political action committee).
