Equity - Diversity - Inclusion (EDI)

PENDING INTERNAL EQUITY STATEMENT (2022)

Equity, diversity, and inclusion are at the core of what we do, who we are, and who we serve. As an organization whose primary focus is on providing health care, advocacy, and education to the public, we also realize that our staff is at the forefront of the work we do Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, D.C. (PPMW) respects and honors all people by upholding the standards of equity, diversity, and inclusion; and we uplift PPMW’s values through talent, culture, and leadership. With this focus as our foundation for equity, we are creating a strategic plan that will help us shape our future growth inline with our values. We intend to provide an environment that includes but is not limited to: responding to our staff’s needs, which will help us continue to provide care for our patients; creating a culture of feedback and inclusion, enhancing the guidance provided by our leaders, and retaining, recruiting, and promoting top diverse talent.

To be the best organization we can be, our leaders must cultivate a trusting, supportive culture. They must seek to listen, understand, and learn from others, promote authenticity, transparency, and collaboration, and work to create inclusivity and consensus within their teams. Leaders must also build an empowering office culture, encouraging everyone to offer their voice in the decision-making process, allowing teammates of diverse backgrounds to offer differing perspectives. Our leaders help colleagues to understand and embrace people of different backgrounds, cultures, and gender identities to lessen any opportunities for bias, toxicity, or oppression to exist. Leaders must promote a sense of belonging to every employee, customer, and external strategic partner. In their role, leaders should practice grace, continuously learn, lead by example, and allow the space for conversations around EDI matters in both group settings and 1:1 discussions

PPMW values creating psychologically safe work environments, where talent can thrive and feel sustainable. It is important to build and retain a diverse workforce that is representative of our greater community - not only to attract and retain but to build as well. We must provide career development opportunities to our team members, and encourage individual success and growth for all staff. In doing so, PPMW prioritizes the employee experience by understanding the direct correlation between employee experience and creating vehicles of opportunity. Employee engagement is directly related to productivity and climate of the work environment.

We value how diversity can uplift different voices and bring together employees to accomplish a set goal. In order to have this we must build a culturally competent organization, develop and reinforce an inclusive culture where everyone belongs, and ensure fair and equitable treatment of everyone PPMW will achieve this by ensuring leadership understands and supports office culture, that they allow employees to come as their whole selves. We will tackle the issue of silos and provide opportunities for staff to interact outside of their departments and analyze all processes and procedures using an equity lens to ensure inclusion and avoid tokenism.

Health Services

Serving Metropolitan Washington, DC since 1937

In the three regions that PPMW serves - DC, Maryland (Montgomery and Prince George’s counties), and Northern Virginia (16 counties) - we are starting to understand the implications of a post Roe landscape We are seeing patients for abortion care from as far away as Tennessee, Florida, and Texas.

Our compassionate staff provided abortion care for a 15-year-old patient from Texas who traveled to DC on the day of her procedure, alone and afraid. Once she entered the Carol Whitehill Moses Center, she knew that PPMW “had her back.”

That night, she flew back to Texas, a place that had turned its back on her.

Public Affairs

Developing Leaders Program

Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, DC’s Developing Leaders Program (DLP) is a nonpartisan, 9-month long, professional development program created for young professionals who are passionate about reproductive health and rights and are looking to become leaders in the reproductive rights space. Launched in 2013, DLP has graduated over 400 rising leaders positioned to actively engage as fierce advocates, allies, and supporters of the reproductive rights movement and PPMW.

Monthly training and skill-building activities offer DLP participants the opportunity to become informed change-agents for reproductive health, rights, and justice. Participants have the opportunity to learn from experts and peers alike and to be involved with PPMW’s advocacy, outreach, fundraising, education, and volunteer work, along with Planned Parenthood Advocates of DC, Maryland and NoVa's work.

Public Affairs at work

The first episode of the Truth Be Told series on IG Live focused on how to have healthy conversations with your children about sex. The episode was hosted by PPMW’s Director of Primary Care, Dr. Ryan Montoya, and features educator, writer, researcher and consultant, Dr. Tracie Gilbert (@tracieg the phd).

The event included opportunities to ask speakers questions and share stories. Participants learned new information on how to have conversations with kids about sex and reproductive health at every age.

In this second episode of PPMW’s Truth Be Told live stream series on IG, PPMW Director of Organizing and Volunteer Programming Franki McDaniel and Intersectional Health Educator Justine Ang Fonte tackled the ways caregivers can talk with kids about porn and the ways porn shapes our understanding of sex and intimacy.

In Episode 3 of the Truth Be Told live stream series, PPMW Women's Health Nurse Practitioner Marie Peters and Advanced Forensic Nurse and certified sex counselor Dr. Heather Quaile dug into the reasons that some cisgendered women and people with vulvas experience sexual dysfunction and talked about some methods, strategies, and care that can help overcome issues that are all too often swept under the rug.

"When They go Low we go Local"

In addition to PPMW’s advocacy work, local advocacy is also spearheaded by Planned Parenthood Advocates for DC, Maryland & NoVa (PPADMV), a 501(c)(4) social welfare advocacy organization that PPMW shares with Planned Parenthood of Maryland (PPM). IMPACT Report FY 2022

PPMW Donor Story

I am a 70-year-old, pre-Roe woman who is a mother and grandmother. I’ve also had two abortions.

In 1969, when I was a senior in college, word circulated in my dorm that there was a gynecologist who would prescribe birth control pills. A story had to be fabricated, however, before she would write a script. You had to be engaged to be married soon after graduation. You had to paint a picture that would make it okay for a single woman to be on birth control and having protected sex. What a breakthrough!

After talking to many women of my generation, I’ve found that this kind of underground information-sharing was quite common in the ‘60s. Back in New York City in 1970 I started my career, still unmarried, however. In 1973 I got pregnant and had an abortion. It was legal by then in New York. It was performed in a well-run clinic staffed by caring professionals. New York has been for decades in the forefront of reproductive rights. But good reproductive health care shouldn’t be a matter of geography as is becoming more and more the grim reality for women across this country.

Other women I have known were not as fortunate as I was. In 1969, a good friend traveled to Washington, D.C. to meet a “doctor” in a motel room for an illegal abortion. Her recovery was horrific, painful and bloody. She returned to NY with few instructions about possible complications. She was terrified, alone, and full of shame. The trauma of that experience stayed with her for many years. The good news was she had the time and the means to pay for her abortion. Many women do not have the luxury of this kind of access

I have known many women over the last 50 years who have had abortions. Their reasons for making this decision were personal and varied, but the choice was theirs. One young woman in particular, a teenager still in high school, was able to contact Planned Parenthood and received swift compassionate services. She was privately counseled and given great support with her post-abortion care She had her whole life ahead of her What a stark difference between this young woman ’ s experience and that of my friend in 1969.

And here we are in 2019 on the precipice of losing our right to have a safe, legal abortion to have that choice. It’s been 50 years since my friend was forced to undergo an illegal abortion in a scary, unsafe environment. We cannot go back.

Development

On March 23, 2022 Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, DC (PPMW) received a transformational $9 million gift from MacKenzie Scott. This generous gift, the largest in PPMW's history, comes at a time when access to sexual and reproductive health care is under attack like never before, especially access to abortion.
