OUR

LIFE HOME HAPPINESS

PPH – We’re Family

For members of the PPH family, every day truly is an adventure in living. It represents a chapter in our lives where we can fully savor every moment, confident that our well-being is in the hands and hearts of a supportive and welcoming staff.

Days filled with an early morning walk around our beautiful campus, lunching with friends in the garden or dining room, playing shuffleboard or bocce, participating in chair aerobics or swim class, and so much more.

PPH is a community of good people taking care of good people. It’s living with an adventurous spirit, guided by care, new friendships, and the dedication of our volunteers and PPH Auxiliary.

Every day brings new experiences, continuing PPH’s long-standing tradition of enriching the lives of our residents, colleagues, and the broader community.

Here, extraordinary adventures await extraordinary people.

ADVENTURES IN LIVING

member of the PPH Board of Directors during 2023, it reminds me that service to an organization is paramount to its success. When I was asked to return as Board Chair, I was honored to be a part of Volunteer Board Leadership and offer my time and experience to PPH. Serving others is a message that I will continue to share with those in my life.

Looking back at what was addressed and accomplished in my bonus term as Board Chair, it was not only I who rose to the occasion, but my talented and selfless Board of Directors; John Dubyk, our President & CEO; and the wonderfully supportive staff. The Board had more than twice the regularly scheduled number of meetings in 2023 as a result of the challenges facing the senior living industry with the end of Federal COVID-19 support, the impact the pandemic had on the perspective of living in a Life Plan Community, and the departure of our CEO in January 2024.

We all know that PPH’s “We’re Family” culture, the campus, the staff, and the value afforded our residents is one of the best senior living options in the Greater Philadelphia area.

This knowledge has, and continues, to motivate our efforts in providing a caring community that affords our residents the opportunity to achieve their highest possible quality of life. This is what our Board envisions and what our leadership and staff want for our residents as we continue to serve them each day.

Upon reflection, my wish is that I provided hope, character, motivation and the leadership that was needed. Listening to Board and leadership members provided inspiration in steering PPH forward.

I believe in a life of service to others whether it’s family and loved ones, the community, or nonprofit organizations. By the time the 2023 Annual Report is released, I will be well on the way to my last year of service to PPH. As William Bradfield said so well, “there are those whose lives affect all others around them. Quietly touching one heart, who in turn, touches another. Reaching out to ends further than they would ever know.”

Over the years I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to serve and engage our donors, community, employees and most of all, our residents.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve.

ADVENTURES IN LIVING

We’re Family. This is more than just a tag line to the PPH Board, leadership team, residents, and staff. It is a value each of us live by as we consider the important decisions for the future of PPH. Walking through the community, I see family values in the faces, expressions, and personalities of all who live, work, and visit PPH. Numerous times residents have stopped me, eager to express how PPH has exceeded their expectations and made their life enjoyable and rewarding.

When Dr. Nancy Koury King accepted the role of interim CEO at PPH, a meeting was arranged for her to meet the leadership team. She left that meeting amazed at the longevity of many of the staff and leadership team members at PPH. In fact, several team members are still at PPH from when I first started working with the community 29 years ago! This longevity is rare and speaks volumes about PPH. From my conversations with residents and PPH staff, Dr. King has proven to be a natural fit for PPH and as a result, the Board of Directors is confident that the future will evolve to fully meet our mission:

Guided by Christian values, the mission of The Philadelphia Protestant Home is to provide a caring senior living community that affords our residents the opportunity to achieve their highest quality of life.

This is our commitment to the PPH community. I am proud to be the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of PPH to lead in the fulfillment of that commitment.

Eric Sigel, Chairperson, The Philadelphia Protestant Home

WE’RE FAMILY — Together, Our Adventures Continue...

Adventures in Living | 3

Over the past year, The Philadelphia Protestant Home (PPH) has experienced significant growth as we pursued our strategic objectives. Growth can manifest in various forms — swift or gradual, straightforward or challenging, timely or untimely. For PPH, it occurred at just the right moment, continuing steadily as we overcame the residual impacts of the pandemic. This period necessitated tough decisions that have been crucial in building the momentum needed to enhance the health and well-being of our residents and the broader community.

One key goal was to find efficiencies in leadership, workforce, and communication to mitigate the effects of a reduced census in Independent Living and Personal Care, as well as to counteract inflationary pressures. Thanks to the visionary leadership of our management, the increased stability of our workforce, and improved communication across all levels of management and with residents, we concluded the year positively.

As of December 31, 2023, PPH’s financial statements show total assets of $55.9 million, which includes $21.3 million in investments.

$30.5 MILLION NET ASSETS

$21.3 MILLION IN INVESTMENTS

$25.3 MILLION IN LIABILITIES

$55.9 MILLION TOTAL ASSETS

Our liabilities stood at $25.3 million, with net assets totaling $30.5 million. The year ended with a net asset increase of approximately $175,000. This favorable rise was primarily due to strategic expense reductions, which helped balance out increases in dining and supply costs.

Significant savings were also achieved in administrative costs through a strategic restructuring of leadership roles, aligning them more closely with PPH’s current and future needs. This restructured leadership team is seasoned and flexible, equipped to continue enhancing our operations.

A notable achievement of this leadership, initiated in mid-2023 and expected to significantly impact 2024, is the development of a new marketing strategy. This initiative is increasing awareness of PPH’s unique qualities and benefits within the surrounding Philadelphia community.

This strategic marketing effort is designed to help individuals and families choose PPH as their next

home, fostering a more expansive and diverse community for the foreseeable future.

In parallel, 2023 saw an increase in our skilled nursing census, which coincided with substantial enhancements to our campus infrastructure. Throughout the year, over $2.9 million was invested in improvements, including the modernization of elevators, upgrades to boiler and water line utilities, new windows, a transformer, and various HVAC equipment. While these upgrades may not be as exciting or visible, they are crucial for ensuring that our residents can live in comfort and safety, reflecting PPH’s commitment to its core values.

As we reflect on the past year’s transformations, we are dedicated to upholding the exceptional reputation of service and trust that our residents expect and deserve as we look ahead to the future.

PPH’s latest LeadingAge PA Fellows in Leadership graduate is Shannon Grieb, VP of Marketing and Communications. Shannon joins Fellows alumni VP of Human Resources Daphne Floyd and VP of Health Services Jennifer Honeyford as a graduate of the program.

“I entered the program as an experienced leader, however I quickly learned that being an effective leader means evolving and being self-aware.” Shannon went on to share, “The bonds between myself and the other students in the program are strong. Although we are all in the senior living field, our backgrounds, experience, and skillsets were so different; we were able to learn from each other as well as from our instructors. I was able to immediately apply what I learned which was exciting for me.”

From cozy studios to large two-bedroom with den floor plans, there is a perfect fit for everyone’s taste. All one and two-bedroom apartments feature a patio or balcony, and each floor in every building offers a community lounge for game nights or simply another place to gather with friends and family.

Personal Care

PPH’s Personal Care neighborhood is located in the center of the community and is close to activities, dining, the library and other community spaces. Personal Care residents enjoy their own private residences and amenities, while also being welcomed to take advantage of the entire campus’s spaces.

Residents in Personal Care are able to get additional assistance with the activities of daily living, such as bathing, medication management, and meals. Our staff is committed to providing assistance while helping residents maintain and achieve their highest level of independence.

Memory Care

Our Chapters program is designed to support residents that suffer from memory impairment. This safe neighborhood offers a soothing environment for our residents while providing specialized care so that they can thrive. In addition to care, residents enjoy a life enrichment program that creates a stimulating environment.

Skilled Nursing - Long-Term Care

For those residents in need of the highest level of care, Pathways skilled nursing provides 24-hour care while focusing on dignity and respect for the individual. Residents’ rooms are spacious and bright, with many lounges and dining venues to enjoy. There is also a beautiful outdoor garden with seating for residents and their loved ones to visit.

Rehabilitation

PPH offers a comprehensive therapy program to assist residents in their recuperation from an illness, injury, or surgery. The ultimate goal is to improve their quality of life and get them back to their lives as soon as possible. On-site physical and occupational therapy offers a great convenience to our short-term rehabilitation patients.

Schea Scholarship

Congratulations to the four recipients of the 2023 Eberhard and Helen Schea Endowment Fund for Healthcare Education Scholarship. The 2023 recipients are: Shyla Pastore, a recreation therapist in Chapters; and Jeremiah Destin, Brigid Hurst and Natgeene Joachim of Dining Services.

Shyla attends Lincoln Technical Institute and is enrolled in a nighttime, two-year LPN program. Jeremiah attends Gwynedd Mercy University and is planning to study occupational therapy. Brigid attends Saint Joseph’s University’s Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and is studying to obtain her Doctor of Pharmacy degree. Natgeene attends Indiana University of Pennsylvania and is studying Speech Pathology.

The Eberhard and Helen Schea Endowment Fund for Healthcare Education was established in 2007 to support continuing healthcare education programs, which promote the overall well-being of PPH residents and staff. Since its inception in 2016, 25 employees were awarded scholarships with a total value of $22,680.

The fund is named in honor of longtime PPH supporters, donors, and residents, Mr. Eberhard “Ebbie” and Mrs. Helen Schea. Ebbie was the manager of the PPH Board of Pensions and an emeritus member of the PPH Board of Directors, while Helen was a member of the PPH Auxiliary. The Scheas’ children, Fred Schea and his wife, Kathleen; and the late Caroline Schea Lloyd and her husband, Jim, established the endowment to honor their parents’ memory and continue the family tradition of generosity.

Winners are chosen based on financial need, academic merit and a 500-word essay on how the funds will be used to advance their careers in healthcare and senior services.

Holiday Bazaar

PPH held its annual Holiday Bazaar in late November. Many residents helped with setup and selling items, which consisted of holiday decorations, clothes, quilts, books, plants, knick knacks, jewelry, crafts and much more! This event was sponsored by the PPH Auxiliary to raise funds for Benevolent Care and gratitude activities.

Patriotic Holidays

Throughout each year, PPH residents, staff and family honor veterans who served our country with flag raising ceremonies, the Veterans Day lunch and other special events.

Volunteers

As a nonprofit, PPH thrives on the dedication of volunteers. Our volunteers — residents and outside community members — make a difference each and every day.

From the Gift Shop and Tabor Market, to delivering mail and packages to residents, volunteers play a vital role in maintaining a harmonious atmosphere on campus.

“When I first came to PPH, I had volunteers in their 70s; those people are still volunteering in their 90s,” Volunteer Coordinator Carol Cherrington said. “They are all an inspiration.”

Philadelphia Boys Choir

The Philadelphia Boys Choir and Chorale paid a visit to our campus and performed for our residents in August. PPH thanks Serenity Hospice PA for sponsoring this event!

Medical Mission Sisters

On August 15th, PPH Resident Sister Jeanette McDermott celebrated her 70-year Jubilee as a Medical Mission Sister. Here at PPH, she leads the prayerful life of a mystic and an intellectual. She takes power walks outside every day, exploring every part of the PPH campus, and is an accomplished golfer and a competitive bocce player.

Dream Flight

On May 26th, four PPH resident veterans had an adventurous day participating in the Dream Flights, a program “dedicated to honoring military veterans and seniors with the adventure of a lifetime: a flight in a Boeing Stearman biplane,” according to the Dream Flights website.

“Looking at our beautiful city was just rewarding,” said Carol Drummond, Lt. Col , an Army National Guard and Army Nurse Corps. veteran. “This was the best thing of my life.”

“I look at Dream Flights as being one of the top events that has taken place for PPH, specifically for our veterans in the years I’ve been here”, said Director of Community Relations Bill Conaway.

• Contributed $2,000 to the Employee Appreciation Fund.

• Conducted the fifth annual Stock’s Pound Cake Sale and Raffle, a major event supported by the 26th Police District.

Special Events and Programs:

• Sponsored a free water ice truck for the entire PPH campus at summer’s end.

• Provided decorations for PPH departments to enhance their spaces during the Holiday Bazaar.

Adventures in Living | 35 OUR DONORS

Common Types of Planned Gifts at PPH

CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITIES

Our charitable gift annuity program, administered through the United Church Funds, was created as a service to our many friends who have expressed a desire to make a gift of significance, while still retaining income from the gift property during their lives.

A charitable gift annuity is a contract in which you exchange a gift of cash or securities for a guaranteed, fixed income each year for the rest of your life! It is truly a win-win situation for the donor and PPH.

LIFE INSURANCE

Do you have a life insurance policy you no longer need? Perhaps your other assets have grown to provide the protection you require, and the insurance policy lies forgotten in a safety deposit box. Did you know that the policy could make a wonderful charitable gift to PPH?

If you have insurance you might like to contribute, or if you are currently paying premiums on a policy and want to discover how this policy might work as a gift, you can name PPH as the beneficiary, or co-beneficiary, of your life insurance.

A GIFT VIA YOUR WILL

Gifts established in your will can be a specific dollar amount or a percentage of your estate. A bequest allows you to retain control of your assets during your lifetime, while also making a gift to PPH.

RETIREMENT PLAN OR IRA

A retirement plan or IRA is typically the largest source of assets that generate taxable income when paid to a beneficiary. Therefore, if you are considering a gift to us after your lifetime, it is usually better to leave taxable assets to us and give non-taxable assets (such as stocks and real estate) to your loved ones.
