President’s Message

In order to achieve high scores in print competitions you need to combine exceptional skills with the knowledge of what the judges are looking for. Judges of competitions on the national level have witnessed the change from negatives to digital photography. They see so much that unless your print excites them, they will not award it a high score.

Think outside of the box and be aware of how the world of art has changed. As in design, fashion and hairstyling, the styles that are popular in photography do not remain static. These changes will date your work if you don’t keep up. Even photographers who do not enter competitions must move forward to please their customers. There is money to be made with young customers, not just with the baby boomers. Keep in mind that you still need a good technical foundation to be able to modernize your work. Without it you are just another fish in the ocean of photographers. I strongly recommend this before attempting to use the journalism style.

Remember, in this ever changing world, you must continue to evolve to avoid being left behind. If you maintain the status quo waiting for things to come to you, they won’t. To succeed, you must continuously update yourself and your business. My business picked up a little because I did not slack off during my slow period. I changed my displays often, used the extra time to update my skills by trying new methods and contacted my former customers. I also came to the meetings early and spent time networking with other photographers. It is a great way to brainstorm and get new ideas to grow your business.

Mission Statement PPGBA exists to support and encourage the professional, artistic and educational growth of its members; to promote public awareness of the profession; and to provide a forum of fellowship and exchange of ideas in an open and friendly atmosphere.

This Month’s Meeting Secrets of Great Portrait Photography

Celebrity portrait photographer Brian Smith will share the lessons he’s learned over the past 30 years capturing the faces of the famous, infamous and un-famous as a top magazine portrait photographer. He will discuss his approach to editorial and commercial assignments from concept to final images, detailing his approach to lighting and problem-solving on productions small and large and share his secrets of working quickly to capture the personality of the people he photographs. Smith will also discuss how personal projects can be used to generate editorial and commercial assignments and allow your personal style to evolve and grow while generating assignments you love to shoot.

About Brian:

Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Brian Smith is the luckiest guy on the planet. He’s told Bill Gates exactly what to do for an entire hour, had an exhibit at the Library of Congress, dined with the President and 3,000 of their closest friends, had cupcakes with Anne Hathaway, gotten drunk with George Clooney and married the most beautiful woman he ever laid eyes on…

For the past 30 years, his bold, graphic portraits of famous celebrities, athletes and executives have been used in advertising, by corporations and have graced the covers and pages of hundreds of magazines. His first magazine photograph appeared in LIFE Magazine when Smith was a 20-yearold journalism student at the University of Missouri. Five years later, Smith won the Pulitzer Prize for Spot News Photography for his photographs of the Los Angeles Olympic Games. He was again a finalist for the Pulitzer for his photographs of Haiti in Turmoil. His photograph of Greg Louganis hitting his head on the diving board at the Seoul Olympics won first place in both World Press Photo and the Pictures of the Year competition and he was named as one of American PHOTO magazine’s New Faces in Photography. continued next page

Cover Story On this month’s cover was highest scoring print from the Illustrative catagory and print of the month for June titled, Welcome to the Hive. It was created by Joe Ercoli. Joe tells us, “I captured this image on a late evening at city hall in San Jose. It’s a combination of both HDR and blended images to balance the required exposures for all of the lights around the building and to retain the texture of the concrete. The building gave me a sci-fi sense of wonderment when I looked at it and I imagined it being a building with some other futuristic and possibly Orwellian function, hence the name, “Welcome to the Hive.”
