From Chef’s Special Board Available Monday, Wednesday and Friday A PORTRAIT of Sir Richard Hotham 1972’. only (Excluding THe original inscription states the Bank Holidays) could be coming home into the hands of 12noon-2.30pm Bognor Regis councillors. THe oil painting, which depicts the town’s founder, is among the assets in the town hall being talked about by councillors. Initial discussions between Arun and Bognor Regis councils have taken place ahead of today’s 90th anniversary of the town formally gaining its royal accolade. THe potential transfer of Bognor Regis Town Hall, including the portrait, was an item on the agenda. Town mayor Cllr Phil Woodall, pictured with the oil painting, was among those present for the first session since the Lib Dems took charge of both local authorities in May’s local elections. He said before the meeting: “I am all for the town hall coming back to the town. “I have always been for it since I became a councillor four years ago. “I can see how the town council can make use of it and my view is that we can make money from it. “It is the central part of the town – and I feel the town should have its own town hall. I didn’t even know the painting of Sir Richard was owned by Arun until it was raised as part of the debate.” THe portrait of Sir Richard Hotham was transferred from the abolished Bognor Urban District Council in 1974 when Arun was formed. One of its inscriptions states: ‘Presented to the Bognor Regis Urban District Council by John Fleming Esq in

painting was completed in 1796 by W Dudman and was purchased in 1919 from the estate of Sir Richard’s godson. It says: ‘Sir Richard Hotham KT MP, merchant of London, founder of Bognor, which he transformed from a fishing village into a fashionable resort. Born in 1723. Died 1799’. Standard plate size only It has hung in the left stairwell between the ground and first floors of the town hall for decades. In 2015, the then Conservativecontrolled Arun allowed the Bognor Regis Heritage Partnership Board to clean and restore the painting but refused to transfer it. As reported, town councillors this month unanimously to start a Availableagreed 9.00am - 11.30am dialogue with Arun about the potential transfer of the town hall for a £1 fee. “Hopefully, the town council will have a more positive relationship with the new Arun than weBognor did before,”Road, said Cllr Chichester, West Sussex, PO20 Woodall. “If the transferTel. of 01243 the town756170 hall BrickKilnGardenCentre happens, it will be popular. THere’s no way of knowing how the talks will go and I don’t know how soon the transfer will happen. It would be nice to see it happen within this four-year administration.” As well as the town hall, the town councillors also wanted the liaison talks with Arun to include the transfer of Hotham Park, its concessions and town centre car parks as well as the promenade. New roof is Mark's legacy at church DEPARTING vicar the Rev Mark Eminson has seen work start on the roof of Pagham's parish church to make it secure for decades to come. Mr Eminson has overseen the Raise the Roof appeal at St THomas a'Becket Church. THis has reached £300,000 of the £350,000 needed for essential work. He said the scaffolding was due to go up on Tuesday to create a fitting backdrop to his final service this Sunday. "I feel that at least I'll be able to see the project begin," he said. "THe new vicar, when they arrive, will have the benefit of a new roof. "It's taken three years of solid fundraising for us to be in a position of starting work. It's been a great achievement. "I'm really pleased with everyone's generosity. THey have helped out of their love for the church." THe funds raised to date were enough to begin the replacement of the missing and damaged tiles. It was hoped the balance would be achieved with further grants and fundraising events, he said. Mr Eminson, 39, his wife, Elise, and their four children will be moving to Wimbledon in south west London next week. He said: "I will be in charge of three churches. It will be a bit more responsibility, which I think I am ready for. My wife comes from London and I've lived in towns previously, so it will not be too much of a surprise after living in Pagham."

Mr Eminson has been the vicar at St THomas a'Becket Church for seven years. It was his first time in charge of a parish after his initial roles in the Church of England. He said: "It's been a very happy time. Pagham is a lovely community. It really is a strong community. "People pull together in times of celebration, like Pagham on Parade, and times of worry, like all the work on the beach that has been needed and the formation of the Pagham Beach Defence Trust. "One of the joys of becoming a vicar is that you become a big part of the community. THe life of a vicar is so varied. You can do 100 different things in a week. "You can hear about a person's death, visit a school assembly and see a wedding couple - all in one day. "And, of course, you can never know the future. THe last thing I thought I would get involved in here is a flood defence trust." THis was formed by residents and parish councillors to finance and develop a scheme to correct the severe erosion of the beach of the past ten years. St THomas a'Becket Church, in Church Lane, is a Grade-I listed building which has been in Pagham for 800 years. It could be up to a year before a new vicar is appointed. Meanwhile, the church wardens will look after the church. A rota of retired vicars will take the services.

Mermaid of Bognor Regis to be remembered with plaque A BLUE plaque honouring a lifesaving bathing machine operator could soon be placed on Bognor Regis Pier. Mary Wheatland (1835-1924), known as the mermaid of Bognor, not only tended the machines – beach huts which could be rolled into the water – she taught children to swim and saved some 30 lives. She was recognised by the Royal Humane Society for her bravery. Bognor Regis Town Council has submitted an application to Arun District Council asking for listed building consent permission to place

the 38cm circular plaque dedicated to Mary on the Grade-II listed building which houses the amusement arcade. It will be the latest plaque in a heritage trail of ten of the information panels planned for the town. According to press reports of the time, Mary used to dive off of the pier but gave it up when she was 71 because she felt she was ‘too old for such feats’. THis didn’t stop her from diving from boats to go for a swim. Mary died a day before her 90th birthday, and her coffin was borne to the church by local fishermen.

f June Lawrence, left, and Jenny Sharpe with their centenary mugs VOLUNTEERS and staff at Bognor Regis War Memorial Hospital have been given a keepsake of its centenary. THe hospital's Friends charity has supplied some 400 celebration mugs to all those who keep the hospital running. THe memento marks the fact the hospital was opened on July 16, 1919, as a tribute to the town's men who had fought and died in the First World War. Tomorrow's annual fete by the Friends in the hospital's grounds in Shripney Road also provides a fitting occasion for residents to show their continued support for the efforts of everyone who provides health care there. Friends' committee member Anita Sturdey also decorated the hospital's main reception with birthday banners and balloons to mark the occasion. She said: "We looked at a range of

celebration items and we thought a mug would be nice because it is something people can use every day. "It's an amazing achievement for the hospital to still be providing care 100 years after it was opened. "When I was putting the decorations up, people who saw them said it was such an achievement for the hospital. "I've worked at the hospital for 27 years and I've always been proud to be part of it. It's a lovely community hospital and the community are so supportive of it. "We are looking forward to seeing many of them at the fete," she said. THe fete will be open from 1pm-4pm and Anita promised it would be the biggest and best yet. Nearly 30 stalls are set to be packed with goods from country produce to CDs to the hook a duck fun to tombolas. A range

of entertainment is also lined up. All the profits will go towards helping the Friends improve the lives of the patients and staff. Two of those who received their mugs were volunteer and fellow committee member of the Friends, June Lawrence, and minor injuries unit emergency nurse practitioner, Jenny Sharpe. Jenny said: "THe mugs are a nice idea to celebrate a special occasion. We get a lot of positive comments about the hospital. "It's the friendliness of the hospital that I really like. I just love my job here and I like being able to see my patients through their treatment." June said: "If you think you can make a difference, it's a good place to be. It's nice if you are fit and well to be able to do something positive like volunteer here. "Once you walk through those doors, it's like being in a family environment."

CREATIVITY could hold the key to boosting Bognor Regis’ economic prospects. Senior councillor Dr James Walsh said the arts had the potential to improve the town’s prospects. A surge in creative enterprise could result from the Arun district becoming a member of the Greater Brighton Economic Board, Arun District Council's's leader told his fellow members. THey agreed to ask to join the board after Cllr Dr Walsh spoke about the large financial benefits which had been gained by the existing members. “It’s very clear from reading their annual report and from talking to people that their ability to lever in substantial sums of money from the private sector in partnership with the public sector to the benefit of communities is enormous. “THe sums of money are many millions of pounds, probably over the total, hundreds of millions of pounds being levered into those other authorities. And there is evidence of what is happening in Adur and Worthing, in Newhaven, Brighton and Hove, Crawley and particularly at the moment in Burgess Hill. “THere is specific benefit to Arun in upskilling the local economy leading to a higher wage economy and bringing the benefits of a modern superfast broadband is just some of the things in the pipeline at the moment, expanding the creative arts,

which could well be an expansion added on to the University of Chichester campus in Bognor Regis. “It’s much wider than that but I commend it to this council.” Cllr Dr Walsh, Arun’s Lib Dem leader, and the council’s chief executive, Nigel Lynn, attended the latest meeting of the economic board. Mr Lynn said: “It is about working with partners and the board is made up of a number of partners." One example of how the funding was achieved was by linking with companies like City Fibre to achieve superfast broadband, said Mr Lynn. “It’s also about getting money from the local growth fund, which is administered by the government and also from the local enterprise partnership as well," he said. "You have to be in it to win it. We need to get some of our agenda on to that agenda." Successful projects were voted on by the board's members, he said. About 12 schemes were ongoing in various locations." Arun would get one vote. Its annual membership fee would be £23,000 based on its population. A series of questions were asked by councillors before they gave their agreement to join the board. Cllr Paul Dendle (C, Arundel) enquired about the funding sources. Cllr Paul English (C, Felpham E) questioned if membership would be reviewed yearly for its benefits.

` Fete theft THIEVES stole a trolley full of food destined for Middleton Village Fete. THe crooks walked off with the 150 bread rolls, scones, butter, crisps, cakes and soft drinks which had just been bought by two members of the fete's committee. Volunteers had to spend just under £90 again to replace the stolen food ready for Sunday's committee event. THis will reduce the amount which will be donated to the two chosen charities. Rosemary Phillips, a committee member, said: "THe incident was very stressful for us." THe crime occurred on Friday at Tesco in Shripney Road. THe volunteers bought the goods and decided to have a coffee in the in-store Costa. All the storage lockers were full and they left the trolley in sight of their table in the coffee shop. But the thieves were too quick and got away with the shopping before the volunteers went back to the trolley. THe store's CCTV does not cover the coffee shop. THe theft did not mar the fete. It was well attended in perfect weather and Jubilee Field looked colourful with classic cars, stalls, a car boot sale, crafts, barbecue and other attractions.

Radio idea for benefits staff JOBCENTRE staff in Bognor Regis could be taking to the airwaves. THe workers are planning to invite the town-based Radio Respect into one of their next sessions which bring various groups together. THey hope the broadcast will help to set out the facts about universal credit and the efforts they are making to get their customers back into work. If the radio show is approved, it will be another initiative by the Department of Works and Pensions (DWP) staff at Gloucester House to update their image. David Phillips, a work coach team leader at the Jobcentre, said: “We are looking at inviting Radio Respect to one of our provider days in September or October. “If they come along, they could broadcast from here and interview various people to get our message out.” THe days are arranged to bring together agencies in the community the Jobcentre works with and potential employers. Emma Wareham, the DWP’s West Sussex county partnerships manager, said: “We want to get everybody in the same room at the same time.” Radio Respect broadcasts over the internet from Argyle Road with an emphasis on mental health matters. Mr Phillips has been to its studio as part of the growing connections he is forging with the community interest company. “We have been sharing some information with them,” he said. Ms Wareham said the links with Radio Respect were invaluable in helping those

at the Jobcentre connect with those who might not visit their High Street offices. “THey can be people who are socially isolated and have not got recent work experience. THey can be very vulnerable people," she said. THe potential radio broadcast is one of a number of ways in which the Jobcentre, which covers the Arun district, has been shedding the old-fashioned image of an employment exchange. THis has included making contact with My Sister’s House women’s centre in Bognor Regis and meeting clients there. A pilot initiative with the Arun and Chichester Citizen’s Advice from last November helped to lead the government to award a contract to the national organisation to provide help to claimants. At Gloucester House, this sees advisers from Citizen’s Advice visit on Wednesdays to provide help such as budgeting support and applying for jobs. Ms Wareham said: “It is really good to get them involved. Our relationship with them is very helpful. It’s a way of seeing things differently. We often see the same customers but often from a different angle. It is working really well for us.” It is a year since universal credit began to be launched in Bognor Regis. Since then, 2,000 people have been put on to it, instead of receiving up to six benefits. “Probably about 1,000 of them are looking for work on a regular basis,” said Mr Phillips. “THe other 50 per cent are either in some form of paid employment or have an underlying health issue.”

Dogs are welcomed back in summer on area of beach DOG owner Alison Sharples has welcomed a move to allow the pets back on part of Bognor Regis beach. Arun District Council has said the fourlegged friends can use the ramp in front of Bognor Regis Yacht Club to reach the beach to the west. THis area has been included in one of the council’s dog exclusion zones since they were introduced several years ago. Marine Drive West resident Alison said the latest decision would make life easier for some dog owners who had been unable to enjoy walking their dogs on the area next to the Bognor Regis zone. “Quite a lot of dog owners have some disability or a condition like arthritis and they can’t get on to the beach over the stones. It’s like having to climb a mountain,” she said. “If we can use the ramp, we can get on and off the beach using that.” She decided to seek the ramp’s exclusion from the ban, and the risk of a fine of up to £500 for the dogs' owners, after her election to Bognor Regis Town Council in May. She came across three dog owners during canvassing who had been fined in close succession because they were confused about the location of the dog ban zone's western boundary. “THey thought they could use the ramp,” she said. THe ban applies between May 1 and September 30 each year. It was brought in to cover the stretches of beach from Park Road to Gloucester Road in Bognor Regis and Felpham’s Canning Road to Felpham

Sailing Club. It also applies along a section of Littlehampton beach. THe latest decision sees the western boundary of the Bognor Regis zone shrunk by some 82m eastwards from Park Road to the ramp of the sailing club in Victoria Road South. Alison has owned her flat since 2000 and takes her 11-year-old short-haired border collie Sheba for seafront walks. But she said she agreed sections of the beach should be free from dogs in the main visitor season. “It’s important to keep dogs off the main beach in the summer,” she said. “Not all dog owners are responsible. “If I had young children, I would not want them to be treading in dogs' mess. Most dog owners do clear up but not all of them.” Arun's decision was made by its group head of technical services, Nat Slade. He told Bognor Regis Town Council: “THe ramp is close to the western extent of, but within, the seasonal dog-ban on the beach zone. I understand and accept that it would be useful for dog walkers to use the ramp to access the beach to the west of the ramp. "No enforcement will take place in relation to use of the ramp for the purpose of accessing the beach to the west of the ramp. A review of the dog controls giving rise to the seasonal dog ban on beach zones is due to be conducted by October, 2020. THis will include a public consultation. "THat review would appear to be a sensible opportunity to revise the western extent of the Bognor seasonal dog ban on beach zone to overcome the issue you have raised.”

We will continue to celebrate our students with their parents and the wider community.” THe Rights Respecting Award was presented to Year 9 student Megan Bryant-Lawson for her work in upholding the right of the child. Toby Buck, Year 13, was awarded the David Jones Legacy Award for his admirable contribution to sports leadership during his seven years at the school. THe evening included performances from dancers and musicians, as well as presentations form student representatives on Arun Youth Council and alumni award winner, Patrick Foote, popular You-Tuber and author.

A YOUNG police constable with just 18 months' service has been praised for saving a man from drowning off Bognor Regis. PC Alice Price and her colleague, PC Shaun Moreland, were called to the beach at Bognor Regis at 6.45am on Sunday after a report a distressed man was planning to go into the sea. A Sussex Police spokesman said: "When they arrived minutes later he was already some 30 metres out from the shoreline. Alice immediately attached herself to a lifeline and went into the sea. "THe man saw her and swam further out but she caught up and took hold of him about 100 metres out, put the lifeline around him, and brought him slowly and safely to shore." Both were checked out at hospital but were physically unharmed. THe Bognor Regis man in his 40s has been receiving specialist medical support and advice. Superintendent James Collis said: "THis was great work by Alice, who only joined Sussex Police in 2018, with excellent support from Shaun. Her courage and their teamwork ensured a vulnerable man is safe."

THe ideas were initially discussed at a meeting between Hallam's representatives and Pagham Parish Council last month. Nicola Swann, the parish council's clerk, told Arun last week it was still unhappy with the proposals. She listed five reasons why this was the case. THese included the parish council's belief it had not been shown the site could be developed in a way that would preserve or enhance the quality and landscape character of its environs. It had also not been demonstrated the development would preserve heritage assets like the nearby Grade II-listed Nyetimber Windmill. THe same concern surrounded the housing's impact on Pagham Harbour. THe latest application has seen nearly 140 letters of objection sent to Arun. Among the protesters is Felicity Pilbeam, of Cherry Close, Aldwick. She told Arun: "THe road is still inadequate for the traffic and juggernauts coming in and out of Barfoots and Hills to collect food for supermarkets. "THere are a lot of accidents already on this B road. THe queues every morning and evening are nose to tail and then you cannot get on to the A27 to get to work." She also listed concerns about flooding, using prime farmland and school places. Rose Green Road resident Belinda Burrows said about Pagham Road in her objection: "As there is no cycle path on this road, you can expect to meet cyclists as well as tractors and HGV vehicles. In the morning, the tailback often means up to three miles in first gear and accidents occur on this road almost daily."

Payments stay unchanged as councillors keep costs down GENERAL allowances for Arun District Council members have been frozen. THe decision by all the councillors last week followed a meeting of the council's audit and governance committee. Its members were told about a review of the payments carried out by independent renumeration panel of residents appointed by Arun. THis could have potentially seen a two per cent increase in their basic allowance of £5,481 a year from 2020. A host of other payments were also left unchanged. Outside the meetings, committee chairman Cllr Inna Erskine said: "As a

new administration and with the help of our committee colleagues, we have sent a firm message to our electorate, that having been just a few weeks in our new roles is not the time to award ourselves a pay rise." Some payments were changed. THese included extending the payments for care arrangements to include adults as well as children and a sum for the leader of the council's minority group. Cllr Tony Dixon (I, Aldwick E) will be the first councillor to get £100 a member and told the full council he would donate it to the Grandad's Front Room community project in Bognor Regis.

EXTRA road safety measures in Pagham have been compiled by a developer to enable its latest plan for hundreds of homes to be decided. THe proposals by Hallam Land Management are due to be debated by Arun District Council's development control committee on August 7. THey are the same which the members of the previous committee, before the local elections in May, rejected last January. THey overturned their officers' advice by saying the highway mitigation measures were insufficient to overcome their highway safety concerns for the 300 homes. THis prompted Hallam to appeal to the government for a second opinion. THis inquiry is scheduled for October 22. But the developer also submitted a second application to Arun to which new highways measures have been added. One of its planning agents, Owen Jones, says in a letter to Arun these include a £100,000 bond for work along Pagham Road and an agreed highway safety monitoring scheme for the road. THe measures identified in the scheme would be carried out before building work began, when the 150th home was occupied and at the end of the work. "THe highway safety measures to be implemented could include the following: *Vehicle activated signage to warn vehicles to slow down on the approach to bends or on approach to junctions *Additional road signs *Extra road markings such as 'SLOW' road markings *Rumble strips on the approach to junction(s).

Upcoming activities include a Tai Chi class (August 6) and a stroll around Hotham park with a history talk (August 9). She said: “THe aim is for us to help older people stay connected with their community. "We want them to know that they have somewhere to come and seek help, while at the same time keep them getting out and about, rather than being isolated at home. For Jo, it’s not just focussed on the individuals, but on the community as a whole. “It’s good for everyone if we can all help out in some way,” She said. “We have to look at the bigger picture because its good for the individual but also for the community as a whole, and the local economy and the country. “People won’t be going to the GP as much, to the hospital as frequently. THere are so many potential savings in a local and wider sense. You’re keeping people active and independent for longer.”

A PROJECT was launched in Bognor Regis last week encouraging older adults to get help if they are feeling low. THe Communities in Mind project has been introduced by Coastal West Sussex Mind to support anyone over the age of 65 who may be feeling depressed, anxious or isolated. Jo Bulis, the manager of the scheme, hosted an information morning at the Laburnum Centre in Bognor Regis for the public. She said: “If you’re feeling isolated, have depression or any other mental health issue, please take the first step and pick up the phone and call me. "I know it can be hard, but if you do that it will be the start of support for you." THe project is broken up into three main areas, offering one-to-one support meetings, activity groups, and a befriending service. THe project already has around 40 people taking part in activities and meetings.

School's saxon hut restoration YEAR 5 students have been refurbishing a Saxon hut at Edward Bryant School in Bognor Regis. THe hut was originally built 10 years ago in the grounds of the London Road school as part of a learning project but has been damaged and broken into over time. With the help of the Weald and Downland Museum and volunteers, pupils have learnt how to restore the building, filling in the walls with their bare hands. THe idea is for the children to learn how to build and maintain the hut so they can then pass those skills on to future years. Rebecca Ferrett, 10, was one of the pupils helping out. She said: “I’m excited for when we’re older so when we can teach the younger children how to build it so they can experience what we’ve done. Tony Whitby, deputy head teacher, is in charge of the project. He said: "THe Weald and Downland Museum have generously

given lots of expertise and time and our year 5 students have been able to come out and renovate it. It’s great seeing all the pupils coming together to help out.” THe museum's services officer, Liz Jearey, has been on hand throughout to help. She said: “As part of the museum one of the things we focus on is education of tradition, craft and skills. If we can pass those on to a group of Year 5 who can then pass that on again, then we’re doing that. “It sounds to me that the children are really enjoying it and the amount of problem solving and team work they’ve done is amazing. It’s been a nice Bognor Regis project.” A number of businesses are helping out, including Greenman Carpentry, or parents from the school helping out during the day. THe school hopes to have the whole hut completely finished and re-thatched in time for the grand re-opening in August.

Garden takes shape at flats

EAGER residents have started to create a garden for their Bognor Regis flats. Arun District Council tenants at King George Court have used items they have bought or been donated. THey include five benches, assorted plant containers and two parasols to form an outside area for socialising. THe work has been led by their tenants' association chairman, David Day, and vice-chairman, Carol Hitchin. Carol, 60, said the area in front of the community room for the 40 flats had started to be changed into a colourful site. "It was bleak and depressing before. Some people have come out here who have not gone into the grounds for years.

"THey have a cup of tea and talk about things. More people are doing that. Some have spoken to people they have never spoken to before. Even those who have not come out have been talking about how nice it looks," she said. David, 72, said: "We are getting things done. We would like to ask for more but we realise Arun doesn't have the money. "THings are coming on. It's going to take time to get everything done and we want people to know what we are doing." As well as flowers, tenants have planted cucumbers and tomatoes. THey also hope to hold a barbecue this year. Donations of tables and chairs would be welcomed by David on 07850 927815.

The sun came out just in time for town's latest Kids Party in the Park AN AFTERNOON filled with music, magic and movement brought summer fun for children to Bognor Regis. THe return of Kids Party in the Park to the town for the second year in a row ensured Hotham Park was filled for hours of fun. Jessica Dean, the event organiser, said: “Today has gone very well and the turnout has been good, especially considering the weather forecast. It’s been a very happy, friendly atmosphere. It’s lovely. “All the children seem to be enjoying themselves. I’ve seen lots and lots of very happy, smiling faces. THey’ve enjoyed Cinderella and paw patrol and all the entertainment. So far, so good! “Originally, the whole thing was just a hobby. But now it’s for my kids to take over and get involved with when they’re older. In the future, we want to make the whole thing bigger, to expand further afield." Until now, the free events have taken place from an area from Brighton to Farnham. More than 200 people attended the afternoon. THey included parents enjoying a break in the sun and children dancing in front of the stage. Just one of the many mums sat relaxing during the afternoon was Sinead Perryman. THe mum of one said: “It’s all been really good, especially considering how bad the weather was this morning. "THere’s loads of kids, and lots of

activities and fun things for them to do - it’s brilliant. "I just happened to come across it this morning, luckily! THere’s loads to do, lots of stalls, it’s great...I'll definitely be coming back." A section of Hotham Park was covered in stalls and activities. THere were a number of bouncy castles, a huge Treasure Island slide, magic shows, music and even hula hoop classes. Food and drinks were also on offer as well as a number of stalls selling everything from books to clothes. Laura Cobbett was one of the stallholders at the event. She said: “It’s amazing. It’s been so busy and it’s had a lovely atmosphere. "Everyone's been really helpful and really lovely and the children seem to be having a great time. "I have been to the Havant one before as a mum and as a stall-holder. THe events always have a lovely atmosphere, and today is no exception. It's friendly, fun and welcoming for everybody.” Another stall-holder, Kerry Willard, said: "It’s been brilliant, there’s been plenty to do for the children, the music and the bands have been good. "THe stages have been great, they've done a fantastic job. THere’s a good lineup and there’s something for everyone. "I think overall everyone’s very happy." A team of people, led by Jessica, organised the event.

Vikki Merton helped out in putting the day together. Dressed as Cinderella, she said: "I think the whole thing has been brilliant. "I've had lots of attention, as has the event as a whole. I've had so many photos. I've been dancing, hula hooping... it's great. "I think events like this are so lovely, not only for the children who get to have fun, but also for the parents who get to have a bit of a break." Another of the event organisers was Amy Graham. "THings like this keep kids off the streets," she said. "It encourages family time. It’s great, it’s free, everyone can come. "We do a lot of events throughout the year, all over the place, we’ve done loads since we started a couple of years ago. "THis is our second one in Bognor, we knew we had to come back after we had such possititive feedback last year - it was a great success. "Every time we host another event we learn something new. We add new things in to keep both the parents and kids happy. "THat's what we think is really important, that everyone is enjoying it. "I think it’s gone really well. We’ve had a lot of feedback, lots of parents asking where and when the next one is."

Molly's memories of Regis 60

A LETTER from the Queen is a prized reminder of the royal links to Bognor Regis. THe official communication from Buckingham Palace was kept by Aldwick resident Molly Myers after her role in staging celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of the town's Regis suffix. She has presented it, with her other mementoes of the day, to the town's museum ahead of today's 90th anniversary of the formal adoption of the regal title being approved. Two events are being staged by Bognor Regis Local History Society to celebrate the latest anniversary. Both take place at its museum in West Street. THe first is at 11am today when a special golden key-shaped cake will be enjoyed, along with coffee, to recognise the town's former slogan of the key to royal health after the king's visit. THis will be followed from 1pm-4pm this Sunday with a selection of music of the 1920s and 1930s played on an original wind-up gramophone. Bognor Regis' town mayor, Cllr Phil Woodall, is staging a concert from 2pm4pm on Sunday at the Hotham Park bandstand to add to the celebrations after a private tea party this afternoon. THis has prompted Molly to reminise about the events of 1989. She said: "It was such a good day. Everyone joined in. It was fantastic but we worked ourselves into the ground." THe Queen's letter to the town was read out by the then town crier, Vic Loake. Her Majesty stated: "Please convey my warmest thanks to the people of Bognor Regis for their kind message of loyal greeting sent on the occasion of their diamond jubilee celebrations of the title of Regis.

"I greatly appreciate the warm message of loyalty and send you all my good wishes for this enjoyable celebration." Willowhale Avenue resident Molly was a member of the day's six-strong organising committee. Some of the celebrations included dancing groups, such as sequence dancing and pom-pom troupes in the precinct, various musicians, all the shops decorated in red, white and blue bunting. Most took part in the spot the difference competitions for adults and children. One was won by Ann Alderton, of SewIn Fashion, who was given her prize by chamber of commerce president Steve Short. A diamond-shaped cake was cut by the former 39 Club organisers, Mr and Mrs Jack Skinner. A parade of 17 Rolls-Royces added glamour to the occasion. Carnival queen Trudi Simms rode in the front one with the then deputy town mayor, Cllr Cedric Birkinshaw. Other parades by Scouts, Guides and Cadets followed before Cllr Birkinshaw unveiled a plaque at the town hall. An open air disco at Bognor Regis FC, which featured town group THe Diamonds, ended the day. It was on July 26, 1929, that West Sussex County Council formally decided the king's agreement to allow Regis to be bestowed on Bognor should take effect. THe decision followed King George V's stay at the now-demolished Craigweil House, in Aldwick. He arrived on February 9 to help his recuperation from a serious lung illness and stayed for 13 weeks with Queen Mary. His recovery prompted councillors in Bognor to ask him to formally recognise the town's role in his recovery.

Potential French artwork is highlight of valuation event A POSSIBLE French masterpiece was among the items taken along to Bognor Regis Museum’s latest valuation event. THe potential work by highly soughtafter artist Maurice Utrillo was among the final objects examined by valuer Andrew Swain. He told its owner, Lisa Lynch, it could be an original signed work of one of Utrillo’s famous Parisian street scenes. It could also be an oleograph – a copy of a painting which is printed in oil colours to look like an oil painting, he said. He advised her to seek further advice about the painting's provenance. Original works by Utrillo (1882-1955) can be seen on the internet to fetch from tens of thousands of US dollars to hundreds of thousands. Ms Lynch, 56, of Saltdean, said: “I’m certainly going to find out more about this painting. I bought it for £7 from a junk shop in London about 25 years ago. “I’d had it in my loft. I asked a man to come round and value some items I’ve got and he offered me £100 for this painting. I refused because I thought it might be worth more.” She had found out about the valuation session and decided to call in after she had met friends for lunch at Goodwood. Among the other notable items which Mr Swain was keen to take a closer look at were some medals, a 1949 Rolex watch and case and an

unusual paperweight. It was inscribed as the first drop of oil from the Sullom Voe oilfield off the Shetland Islands. Owner Mary Osborne, 71, of Bognor Regis, said: “It dates from the 1960s. THe auctioneer is going to see if it is worth anything.” THe paperweight had belonged to a friend who had an office job in the British oil industry, she said. Mr Swain, of Henry Adams

auctioneers, said his third visit to the West Street museum had again been worthwhile. “I’ve been non-stop for three hours. It’s always very interesting to come here,” he said. Bognor Regis Local History Society chairman Greg Burt said: “About 30 people have come along with their items. THat’s about the same as previous years.

“Quite a few of them have been disappointed but that’s going to happen. THis is a great event for us to stage. It brings more people into the museum and it’s the only place in Bognor Regis where items can be valued by an expert." THe society also benefited from the auctioneer’s commission from any items taken along which were auctioned, he added.

` Town hotel plans ONE of the country's leading hotel operators wants to open in Bognor Regis. Travelodge has included the town in its wishlist of 26 seaside resorts in England and Wales. It says the accommodation would entail a £6m investment in the town and create 25 jobs. Tony O'Brien, the Travelodge UK development director, said: "THere are significant regeneration and modernisation projects taking place in seaside towns and cities across the UK, and we have identified 26 coastal areas that could benefit from a Travelodge hotel. "Bognor Regis is one of those key locations and we are kickstarting our expansion programme by writing to Bognor Regis Town Council to see if we can play a pivotal role in their regeneration programme like we have done in Rhyl. "Investing in a low-cost hotel like Travelodge is an increasingly attractive choice, as it draws visitors, creates jobs and helps boost the local economy." THe company's research showed they spent double their room rate with surrounding businesses, he added. Bognor Regis is seen as an ideal location because of its beaches and attractions, like Hotham Park.

Energy award POWERING West Sussex schools by the sun has brought national recognition tot the county. A scheme for West Sussex County Council, delivered by the council in Portsmouth, has installed solar photovoltaic panels which generate 15 to 250 kilowatts on to 80 schools. The panels enable the schools to generate clean, renewable electricity and reduce their annual energy bills by an average of £2,000. They are also cutting carbon emissions by 1,300 tonnes. The programme won the delivering clean growth category at the national Association of Directors of Environment, Economy, Planning and Transport (ADEPT) President's awards. West Sussex cabinet member for the environment, Cllr Deborah Urquhart,

said: "We are delighted to be recognised by our local government peers for delivering such an ambitious programme. "The solar panels will deliver environmental and financial benefits for many years to come and, in the case of some of the larger installations, enable schools to meet 100 per cent of their energy demand on sunny days." The combined renewable energy generation capacity from all the schools' solar panels equals the output of the county council's five-megawatt solar farm at Tangmere. "This is capable of powering 1,500 homes." Installing the panels is part of the council's energy strategy, which has included the launch of energy firm Your Energy Sussex.

Council leader survives second critical debate A SECOND call for a vote of no confidence in the leader of West Sussex County Council has come to nothing. Cllr Louise Goldsmith, pictured below, said she was ‘devastated’ after the last such call on June 7 – this time she cracked a joke. To laughter from fellow Conservatives, Mrs Goldsmith suggested such calls should be made a regular item on the agenda to save people writing them or debating them. The call was part of a notice of motion from Labour’s Cllr Michael Jones about the recent critical report into the county’s fire and rescue service. The notice said it had become ‘unsustainable for this council to have confidence in a leader and cabinet who have presided over such an outcome'. It called for all fire service budget cuts proposed for 2019/20 to be withdrawn completely and for priority to be given to recruiting firefighters to replace those lost since 2010. It also asked for a review led by an independent person to be carried out to determine whether alternative arrangements should be made for the governance of the fire service. And it called on the council to ‘stop prevaricating’ about the funding received by the fire service and to ‘finally press the government for urgent additional funding to properly resource the very stretched service’. During a meeting of the full council

on Friday, members voted to accept an amendment from Cllr Jacquie Russell (C, East Grinstead S & Ashurst Wood) which took out the ‘no confidence’ call. Her amendment also adjusted the wording of Cllr Jones’ notice to reflect the improvement plan already put in place by the council and the fire service. There were some harsh words aimed at Mr Jones, with Cllr David Edwards (C, Bersted) calling his notice ‘another vitriolic rant calling for blood’ and ‘another tirade from a political opportunist’. Cllr Edwards said Cllr Mrs Goldsmith would ‘never walk away’. Cllr Jones (Southgate & Gossops Green) said: “It’s rich they’ve accused me of being political with this issue and weaponising it. "It’s deeply ironic because we’re only here because of the political decisions that the Tory administration has made in the past.”

f Apprentices at GTR in Fontwell

New apprenticeships CHICHESTER COLLEGE has teamed up with leading composite engineering manufacturer GTR to offer young people in Sussex the opportunity of a lifetime. Global Technologies Racing (GTR) have created 20 apprenticeships for composite technicians – providing anyone aged 16 or over the chance to work in a high-paced, engineering environment in Fontwell. And that’s not all – starting as a composite technician apprentice is a fantastic entry into a career which could take you all the way from the workshop to a Formula One race team! At GTR, apprentices will work on a variety of projects across industries which include aeronautical, automotive and motorsport industries, as the company is the leading composite manufacturer in motorsport, building structural aero parts such as body work and wings for a number of Formula One and Indy car teams.

Andrew Green, executive principal for the Chichester College Group, said: “This is a really exciting opportunity for any young person who has a passion for technology or motorsport. “To be able to work with some of the best in the business, and study on a bespoke apprenticeship programme, which the college has developed with GTR, is a fantastic way to learn while you earn – and give you the work ready skills which will set you up for success. “We are very proud to be working with GTR to give young people in our local area an incredible chance to change their lives through learning.” The 20 apprentices will be split into two groups, with staggered start dates with the first ten to start in September, 2019, and the second two months later, in November. ` Organ donation TRANSPLANT experts have called for families in West Sussex to talk about organ donation. The law regarding the donations changes next spring. All adults in England will be considered as having agreed to donate their organs when they die unless they record a decision stating otherwise or are in a group specified by law, such as under 18. Anthony Clarkson, director of organ donation and transplantation at NHS Blood and Transplant, said: "There are 55 people in West Sussex waiting for a transplant now. "Their only hope for a new life is that a family in their time of grief will make the wonderful decision to agree to organ donation. "With the law around organ donation changing in England from next spring, we urge everyone to find out about the choices available to them, make their decision and share it with their family." Anyone who would like to help others after their death should tell their family they want to be an organ donor and join the NHS Organ Donor Register. More people than ever across the UK donated their organs after their death last year. This included 13 West Sussex residents. But fewer people died in circumstances where they were able to donate their organs. An NHS Blood and Transplant spokesman said: "This means it is more important than ever that every person who wants and is able to donate their organs after death, is given the opportunity to do so." The past five years in West Sussex saw 30 people die waiting for a desperately needed organ transplant.

f The students learned valuable skills over the week

Pupils awarded for time training with firefighters BY LOTTE PEGLER lotte.pegler@sussexpost.co.uk A GROUP of 10 secondary school pupils were put through their paces as they trained like firefighters. Supported by family and friends, the pupils took part in a pass out parade at Bognor Regis fire station on July 12, following a week of intense training as part of West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service’s FireBreak programme. Alfie Walden (St Philip Howard), Alicia Saigeman (Felpham Community College), Cody Belcher and Frankie Curd (Chichester High School), Evan Goble and Lewis Johnson (Chichester Free School),

George Pike (Selsey Academy), Joe Willson (The Littlehampton Academy), Leo Ozawa (The Angmering School) and Tilly West (Midhurst Rother College) all took part. The children joined in hose running, ladder climbing and using breathing apparatus while learning about fire safety, CPR. They also gained a HeartStart first aid training qualification. Jeremy Beard, WSFRS’ area manager for risk and improvement, presented each graduate with their award. Alicia received a special award for outstanding individual achievement, while Cody received an award for commitment to team objectives. Mr Beard said: “FireBreak is a fantastic opportunity for young people to learn

more about our fire and rescue service, while picking up some really valuable skills such as teamwork, discipline and self confidence, which we hope they will be able to take away with them and put to use in their lives. “When they arrived on Monday morning, none of them knew each other. But they have worked together as a team, demonstrating real determination to complete what is a very challenging course. “We hope that they use this course as a springboard on to bigger and better things.” FireBreak is run by the fire service's targeted education team, aimed at encouraging students to become positive role models and learn skills that can go towards maintaining a safe community.

LETTERSto the editor

Readers' letters are welcomed by the Bognor Regis Post. They should be limited to less than 300 words and be submitted by 5pm on Monday to be considered for publication in that week's edition. We reserve the right to edit letters before they are published. They should be emailed to: news@sussexpost.co.uk, posted to: Post Newspapers Ltd, 63 London Road, Bognor Regis, PO21 1DF or handed in to our office at this address. Dear Editor, Reading your report on the scrapping of the Pavilion Park, i.e. Sunken Garden, I am surprised that Tory councillors thought that people should be asked what they think. Where were these councillors when local people were protesting about the former Arun District Council plans and were consistently ignored? Arun went on regardless, spent a lot of money and just before the

local elections had four extravagant noticeboards erected showing people what they might get. We were told how wonderful this new park would be but what about the future of the health centre and the building of two tall blocks of flats, which had been quietly put on the back burner? THere would have been car parking - several rows of it, the full length of the green strip and the notice boards promised lighting to encourage

activities in the park 24/7. Would those same protesting councillors have voted for that amount of activity outside their own front doors? Let's hope the new council will come up with better ideas and, this time, have full consultations with local people before going ahead. Mary Stanley, Sylvan Way, Bognor Regis

Choir sorry to see Miguel go

IT WAS the end of an era for a choir in Bognor Regis as their much-loved musical director returned home to Portugal. Miguel Fernandes came to the RAFA, the Royal Air Forces Association, Bognor 381 Choir in early 2014, just two years after it was formed. He brought with him enthusiasm, inspiration, imagination and a structured training of their voices. THanks to his coaching, the group blossomed into a confident choir. Carol Penny, Bognor Regis RAFA's press officer, said: “No was never an option for him. With his catchphrase, 'Come on, you can do it', we not only

sang at every opportunity in concerts around the area, but were also actively encouraged by Miquel to take part in international singing.” THis included concerts in Porto, Prague and Kratrow where they sung for, and with, many other choirs. THey will be meeting him in September in Lisbon where he will again be their musical director as they sing alongside 11 other choirs. Everyone involved with the choir wished Miguel good luck in the next chapter of his life. THe new musical director, Andre de Silva, took over at the choir's rehearsal on Tuesday.

CHICHESTER CINEMA AT NEW PARK July 26 - August 1

THE 28th Chichester International Film Festival, the largest on the south coast, will open its wide doors at Chichester Cinema at New Park on August 8 with the UK premiere of The Conductor, a magnificent and epic new Dutch film in the presence of the director, actor and producer. The film is based on the 1920s true story of Dutch-born Antonia Brico, the world’s first woman who successfully conducted a large symphony orchestra. The closing gala film, a preview, on Sunday, August 25, is Mrs Lowry & Son, a beautiful, delicate, intimate and amusing story of the brittle but vital relationship between L. S. Lowry (Timothy Spall), and his bedridden, unhappy and controlling mother (Vanessa Redgrave). There are three open air screenings from August 2 at the historic Priory Park. See open air films and all festival films on www. chichesterfilmfestival.co.uk Book your (free) seats for the media and audience event on July 30 at 11.30am – 12.30pm, artistic director Roger Gibson giving a preview with clips. Before the festival, don’t miss the following films. In The Hummingbird Project, Jesse Eisenberg is all focused nervous energy as Vincent Zaleski, whose plan is to build a straight line tunnel from Kansas to New York through which he'll run hundreds of miles of fiber-optic cable. The goal? To receive stock prices one millisecond earlier than the competition, thus earning himself hundreds of millions of dollars. You won’t look away in Never Look Away, a gorgeous epic story of the evolution of an East German painter, struggling to find his voice. It's also about the depravity of the Third Reich and the regimes that followed in East and West Germany. No small targets then by the director of The Lives of Others. Patrick Strickland’s film In Fabric takes on aspects of different genres combining stylish thriller, horror and romance into a fantastically beguiling and eerie watch. While Marianne Jean-

Baptiste excels as lonely, recently separated Sheila, the red dress that she buys also has a leading part to play. The film follows the journey of this dress as it wreaks havoc in the lives of those that are unfortunate enough to wear it. Toy Story 4 is so good it’s criminal. But never before has a studio broken the law as Pixar has done, by sustaining something close to perfection to the closing credits of a fourth. Don’t miss it. In Anna, beneath Anna Poliatova's striking beauty lies a secret that will unleash her indelible strength and skill to become one of the world's most feared government assassins. The affair between Vita Sackville-West and Virginia Woolf is winningly recreated by Gemma Arterton and Elizabeth Debicki in Vita and Virginia, the relationship testing to neardestruction socialite-author Vita’s marriage with Harold Nicolson along with literary icon Virginia’s relationship with stolid Leonard Woolf. Performance Events: Romeo et Juliette comes from New York’s Met Opera (July 28) and Measure for Measure is live from the RSC (July 31). Lovers of Ernst Lubitsch films – he cast stars like Clark Gable, Gary Cooper, Charles Laughton – will revel in The Cinema of Ernst Lubitsch given by Hollywood historian Nick Smedley on July 26 at 6.30pm. Part of the Focus on Film courses given by the cinema’s Education Department. Chichester Cinema at New Park, New Park Road, Chichester PO19 7XY Box office: 01243 786650 www.chichestercinema.org

The Current War

SPARKS fly as Benedict Cumberbatch’s Thomas Edison and Michael Shannon’s George Westinghouse lock horns in an electrifying period drama depicting the fierce battle to power the world. Director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon transports us to late 19th century America, where iconic inventor Thomas Edison attempts to dazzle Manhattan with his large scale, low voltage, direct current technology. He’s supported by his wife, Mary Edison, and pushed on his ethics by his forthright assistant. However, it’s the mutton-chopped George Westinghouse who feels he’s seen fatal flaws in Edison's plan. Backed by J.P. Morgan and his wife, Marguerite, they bet everything on the riskier high voltage alternating current, so igniting the famous “War of the Currents". The script from playwright Michael Mitnick strikes a delicate balance between scientific theory and human interest in a bid to fully light up our screens this summer. It’ll also trace the early journey of enigmatic electrical engineer Nikola Tesla and his own part in the ensuing “war". Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Shannon star as the rival electricity titans and lead a stellar cast including Katherine Waterston, Tom Holland, Matthew Macfadyen, Tuppence Middleton and Nicholas Hoult.

Horrible Histories: The Movie – Rotten Romans Comedy, Family, History Screened at Picturedrome Cinema

HORRIBLE Histories: The Movie - Rotten Romans will transport audiences back to Roman Britain and embrace the timeless, irreverent humour of the successful books and TV series. Atti is a Roman teenager with brains but very little brawn. When one of his schemes falls foul of Emperor Nero, Atti is forced to join the army and sent to miserable, cold, wet Britain. Things go from bad to worse when Atti is captured by Orla, a feisty teenage Celt desperate to prove herself as a warrior. Meanwhile, a furious Nero is determined to crush the British rebellion, led by Boudicca. As the Romans prepare for a historic showdown with the Celts at the Battle of Watling Street, the two new friends find themselves lined up on opposite sides of the battlefield. The film features rising stars Sebastian Croft as Roman teenager Atti and Emilia Jones as his Celtic rival Orla leading an all-star cast including Nick Frost, Craig Roberts, Kim Cattrall, Kate Nash, Rupert Graves, Alex Macqueen, Sir Derek Jacobi, Alexander Armstrong, Lee Mack, Warwick Davis, Lucy Montgomery and more.

Not just OK Oklahoma! is a knock-out Theatre review  By Alicia Denny Oklahoma! Until September 7 Chichester Festival Theatre, Oaklands Park, Chichester PO19 6AP 01243 781312 box.office@cft.org.uk www.cft.org.uk EVERY day for the next six weeks, director Jeremy Sams, the cast, crew and management of Chichester Festival Theatre are likely to wake up and say: "Oh, what a beautiful morning" - thanks to this summer's smash-hit musical. The Rodgers and Hammerstein classic Oklahoma! has returned in triumph to the CFT with a traditional, tuneful and energetic production led by two potential stars of the future, Hyoie O'Grady and Amara Okereke, as Curly and Laurey. O'Grady's opening bars of the iconic "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning", could have been a touch stronger but the couple had real chemistry which

developed well as the story progressed. Also making her Chichester debut, actress and comedian Josie Lawrence was a vital central figure to the action as Aunt Eller, giving the role more force than usual and all the better for that. Isaac Gryn (Will Parker), Bronte Barbe (Ado Annie) and Scott Karim (Ali Hakim) took on the humorous characters with vim and vigour while Emmanuel Kojo created sympathy in the difficult role of Jud Fry.

The company of singers and dancers were outstanding with their enthusiasm and athleticism making the most of the thrust stage area and, although the hummable tunes are so familiar, the 14-strong orchestra stayed tightly controlled and did not overwhelm the voices. As usual at CFT, the set design and effects were terrific, particularly in the atmospheric dream sequence. Overall, this production is more than OK, it's a KO.

yourself at West Sands

Great value fun all day every day West Sands Fun Fair W Sands Ln, Selsey, Chichester PO20 9BH Tel: 07989 534852 SUN, sea, sand - and a family fun fair - make up the ideal ingredients for a summer day out and they're all together at West Sands in Selsey. Now bigger and better than ever with new rides and attractions, the fair has traditional thrills, such as the Waltzer to whizz riders round, a roller coaster with curves and drops or visitors can try to outdrive each other on the dodgems. Families are especially welcome and, at only £10 for up to five hours of enjoyment, the fair is great value for all. Making fairy tales come true is a roundabout with two Cinderella pumpkin coaches and horses, brought in from Italy this year. It sits alongside other entertainment for youngsters including a bootshaped slide, helter skelter and paddle boats. For the youngest visitors, there's an activity sand pit with diggers and soft play area while for those with plenty of energy, trampolines are free to use up until 11am. Established more than 40 years ago, the fair has been a destination for both holidaymakers and families who travel regularly from Chichester and Bognor Regis, as well as Selsey itself, to enjoy the rides, which are good enough to rival many other bigger fairs along the south coast. After a tornado destroyed much of the fair’s site in 1998, it was re-built to the latest standards with the addition of a purpose-

built cafeteria so fun-seekers can stay at the seaside venue all afternoon. Two innovations for 2019 are a stand where you can make your own ice cream and another serving deep fried battered Oreo biscuits. Takeaway drinks, snacks and ice creams will keep the family fuelled up as they make the most of sunny days in Selsey. The fun fair, off Mill Lane, near the windmill and linked to the neighbouring holiday park, is open every day from noon to 6pm, until December. Although the weather can sometimes limit times, the gates at West Sands Fun Fair are open as often as possible and certainly throughout summer season weekends. What’s even better is that entry and car parking is free for all visitors.

Purpose-built diner open all day

FEEDING the family at a reasonable price while out and about can be quite a challenge but The Saltings diner has the answer. The restaurant at West Sands fun fair is open to the public daily from 9am and serves a full menu all day. There is a large, comfortable seating area in the purpose-built diner and seats outside for sunny weather. If the sea air and hectic activity on the funfair rides have given you an appetite, The Saltings’ menu will have something to suit. Full English breakfast of bacon, egg, sausage, beans and all the trimmings can be enjoyed any time of day while lunches are prepared on the premises, ranging from lighter sandwiches to hot, cooked dishes. Dinner, tea, chips and burgers are also on the well-priced menu plus a good choice of hot and cold drinks. If you’re too busy enjoying yourself to stop for a sit-down meal, snacks, burgers, tea and coffee are available to take away, plus favourite ice creams.Whether you want to fill your belly, quench your thirst or enjoy a tasty treat, The Saltings can satisfy all visitors.

A QUARTER of a century of twinning with a German town has been celebrated in Bognor Regis. THe formal links with Trebbin were established in 1994. Guests from the town, close to Berlin, were among the visitors from Germany who were hosted by Bognor Regis Twinning Association members for five days this month. Pictured above is the mayor of Trebbin, THomas Berger, right, presenting Bognor Regis town mayor, Cllr Phil Woodall, with a gift. Trebbin's visitors were joined by representatives of Weil am Rhein, the German town with which Bognor Regis has been twinned since 1987. Twinning association press officer James Clevett said: "THe exchange visit was again regarded as a very successful and joyous occasion. THe visitors were entertained at two receptions - one on their arrival by the town council and the main one by the twinning association, whose members also provided the entertainment. "In addition, the visitors were taken on outings to Stansted House, which included a visit to the planetarium. "A trip to Brighton involved a look around the Royal Pavilion while one day was reserved for a day locally with their hosts." Bognor Regis Town Council staged its reception for the German guests at Seasons at the town's football club. Rebecca Vervecken, the council's mayor and town crier's secretary, said: "THere were over 100 people present. THese included guests from the twin towns, their Bognor Regis hosts, representatives from the twinning association, and Bognor Regis town councillors and staff. "Trebbin presented Bognor Regis with a glass plaque, featuring their crest, and Weil am Rhein with a book on their town and a bottle of drink." A BOGNOR REGIS student nurse joined a protest in Parliament to demand an end to the staffing crisis that puts patients at risk. Alison Stoneham, pictured below second left, joined colleagues at Westminster to lobby the government about the matter. THe Royal College of Nursing (RCN) event saw nursing staff and students from across the country meet MPs and peers from all parties to discuss their experiences. THe RCN is launching a campaign for new laws to make the government and NHS bosses explicitly accountable for safely staffing health and care services across the south-east and throughout England. Alison said: "It was a great event to be part of and an honour to represent nurses from the region. "Even though I am a student, it is plain to see how a lack of staff has an impact. We love our jobs and I go into work to do the best I can for each and every patient every day. "However, more staff would make this so much easier for us and have a positive impact on patient care." THe RCN is also campaigning for investment of at least £1bn a year in nurse education to attract and retain a new generation of nurses. Lindsay Meeks, its south-east regional director, said: "Health and care services in the south east are reaching a tipping point, with nurses routinely working many hours of unpaid overtime to deliver the care people need. THis puts nurses under impossible strain and puts patients at risk."

NEW Bognor Hotham Rotary Club president Karen Holman began her year in office with three presentations. Karen was handed her chain of office by the outgoing president Terry Farndell at the start of the Rotary year. Terry was thanked for his achievements during the past year. Karen highlighted some of her hopes for the coming 12 months. THe ceremony was immediately followed by the presentation by Karen of prestigious Paul Harris Fellowship Awards to two deserving club members. John Holman, pictured below with Karen, and John Bailey, who are both long-standing members of the club, were proudly presented with the awards by the new president. THe recognition reflects the outstanding commitment they have made to the club and the community over many years. A club spokesman said: "THe prestigious Paul Harris Fellowship Award is the highest accolade that the Rotary organisation can bestow and was created many years ago in memory of businessman Paul Harris who founded Rotary in 1905 in order to exchange ideas and 'give back' to the community." Karen's final presentation was to John Baitup, who will fill the role of her vice-president.

Q Hair and Beauty 37 North St, Chichester PO19 1LX Tel: 01243 781585 www.qhairandbeauty.co.uk THE hair and beauty industry is constantly evolving, with modern technology and advancements leading to exciting and enormously effective new therapies being introduced on a frequent basis. The essential key to achieving the best results is to choose a qualified practitioner you can have complete confidence in, and multi-award-winning Q Hair and Beauty in Chichester now offers a range of the latest procedures which are carried out by expert, experienced professionals you can rely on at every stage. “The Aesthetics Suite we launched almost two years ago has proved enormously popular and continues to grow,” said Q’s managing director, Dawn Lawrence Grant. “We are thrilled to be able to provide advice, guidance and treatment for hair loss therapy, anti-wrinkle and filler treatments and now our recentlyintroduced microblading. qualified consultants working with us.” Microblading is carried out to the highest standards at Q by Charlotte Benson and is already in great demand by all age groups, with excellent and enthusiastic feedback. A microblade is a handheld tool which has a series of micro needles used to make a fine cut, or microstroke, in the skin with pigment. This process is known as micropigmentation and with the proper technique, microbladed eyebrow results look beautiful and completely natural, giving the effect similar to eyebrow hair. This can last between one and two years with appropriate top-up advice from Charlotte. She has appointments available at Q each Wednesday. Also popular with a wide range of age groups and for both men and women is the hair loss therapy provided at Q by Ron Campbell, who has been involved in the hair loss industry for over 30 years and now offers at the salon in Chichester,

services usually associated with Harley Street in London. This low level laser therapy (LLLT) is a non-surgical scientific approach to hair loss, thinning or falling hair. It increases blood-flow, encouraging oxygen and nutrients to hair follicles when the low level laser light is applied to the scalp. It is a painless, non-invasive process and a full scalp and hair check at Q will determine who can benefit from the treatment. Almost all clients experience a marked improvement in the look and feel of their hair and after a free consultation, a programme is specifically designed to the client. The process is excellent for women with female pattern hair loss and those with age-related generalised thinning or falling hair, damaged or broken hair, pre and post hair transplant patients, men with hereditary male pattern baldness. Laser therapy can promote and encourage growth of hair and slow down

the thinning process. A cost-free private and confidential consultation at Q is offered to discuss with Ron any hair lossrelated issues. Cosmetic procedures in Q’s Aesthetics Suite are carried out by Dr Daniel Quemby, a multi-skilled doctor who many people will have seen on their TV screens as one of the inhabitants of The Island with Bear Grylls. An exceptionally highly-qualified expert who carries out procedures to the highest-possible standards, he stresses the vital importance of going to a qualified and experienced practitioner. He is horrified at the lack of regulation in the field of aesthetics, where procedures are frequently carried out by people with only a few hours of training. “There are very few people I would want to work with and no-one else has met the high standards I insist on, but Q Hair and Beauty is perfect,” he explained. “I believe that everything should be done properly - there are an awful lot of charlatans when it comes to cosmetic procedures, a practice which is not properly regulated.” Dr Quemby said the procedures most in demand in Chichester were antiwrinkle injections and lip fillers, though he offered other aesthetic services.

“We are very proud to have Dr Quemby as a member of our team,” said Dawn Lawrence Grant. “Aesthetic treatments have experienced evergrowing popularity in a world where we all want to look and feel our best. We are delighted that such a high-calibre doctor with extensive experience has chosen to work with us and provide the very best aesthetic treatments.”

Health Matters Jane Bulbeck Specialists in Skincare & Beauty 2 Eastgate Square, Chichester PO19 1ED 07825 773141 01243 532666 hello@janebulbeck.com www.janebulbeck.com HAS your “get up and go", got up and gone? You may be lacking in vitamin B12. So what is vitamin B12? B12 is a watersoluble vitamin, when injected into the muscle; it passes quickly and easily into the bloodstream. It aids the formation of red blood cells that are vital for carrying oxygenated blood around the body. What can it treat? Certain conditions such as a loss of appetite, anorexia, bulimia, anaemia, hair loss, extreme dieters, lethargy, endometriosis, sleeplessness, thyroid issues, chronic IBS, malabsorption, crones, thinning and brittle nails and hair. Research also suggests vitamin B12 injections can further support some other conditions and their associated symptoms. These conditions include dementia, numbness, pins and needles, tiredness, poor concentration, joint pain, constipation, loose bowels, poor memory, mood swings, low mood, weight loss, joint pain, weakness, fatigue, hair loss, brittle nails and dry skin. All these things benefit from vitamin B12. In the elderly, the ability to absorb enough B12 decreases with progressing age. It is helpful to mothers and babies in pregnancy, and at breast-feeding. It helps people taking medicines to inhibit the production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Frequency of treatments: Monthly shots at four-week intervals are recommended. How is the treatment carried out? It is carried out via a single dose injection into a fleshy area such as the upper arm or thigh. How long does it take? Approximately 30 minutes. We ask you to complete our comprehensive consultation form and our clinic practitioner will go over it with you to ensure suitability and a treatment plan, if needed.

Don’t let hand tingling become numbness. Miguel Oliveira Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Nuffield Health Chichester Hospital

As a Consultant specialising in surgery of the hand and wrist, I see many different conditions, the most common of which is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). The symptoms tend to progress in a fairly predictable fashion, and the condition can be reliably treated if it is identified before it has progressed beyond a certain point. Typically, CTS causes tingling, or pins and needles, in the thumb and adjacent fingers, although it may sometimes feel as if the whole hand is involved. This is caused by pressure on one of the nerves at the wrist and is often worse when the hand is slightly raised, during day-to-day activities such as driving, brushing your hair or using a ‘phone. The tingling may also come on with prolonged activities such as writing or using a computer mouse. One of the other symptoms that is very typical of CTS is night pain. This often wakes you up at night and the pain is associated with tingling that is usually relieved by shaking your hand. You may find that you need to get up and walk around for a bit before you can get back to sleep. If these symptoms are allowed to progress, the pressure on the nerve can cause permanent damage that is irreversible.

Tingling is a “cry for help” from a nerve that is not functioning normally but this is a reversible symptom if the pressure is taken off the nerve. However, if you start to develop more permanent numbness in your fingers this is a sign that the symptoms are progressing. Numbness is distinct from tingling and is a sign that the nerve is being damaged beyond repair. The most important step in treating CTS is making the diagnosis so you should seek medical advice if you have symptoms that are suggestive of the condition. Your GP will be able to advise you and can initiate treatment or make an appropriate referral. The treatment of CTS can involve night splints, antiinflammatories, injections or surgery (which can be done under local anaesthetic) but the success of treatment depends upon timely diagnosis. Carpal tunnel release surgery is usually done on an outpatient basis meaning you will go home the same day as the procedure. You may go home with a splint or heavy bandage on your wrist. Once these are removed you will begin exercises and physiotherapy to regain movement in your wrist and arms, all covered within our promise to ensure you have everything you need to make a full recovery, included within the price of £2,135. Mr Oliveira has be a Consultant in hand & wrist surgery for nine years. For more information or to book a consultation with Mr Oliveira, please call 01243 887649.

Bognor Regis' famous Punch and Judy Man 'The greatest genius of British comedy' who helped put Bognor on the map THE recent television series ‘Don’t forget the Driver,’ was a comedy about a coach driver operating from Bognor Regis. One national newspaper said they thought the series could be good for the town in the way that Poldark has been good for Cornwall. Time will tell if that prophecy comes true. How many people have special memories listening to Tony Hancock, the hapless funny man? He made us laugh with his ‘Hancock’s Half-hour’ and other programmes on the radio, as well as his films. It is for a particular film that we should in fact remember him here in Bognor Regis. It was in 1962 that he joined us and played his part in helping to make the town famous. THe film, of course, was ‘THe Punch and Judy Man’. Tony Hancock was hugely famous in the

1950s and 60s. He was, and still is, quite a cult figure. While carrying out research for this article, I have been amazed at the number of websites that are dedicated to, or have links to, him. I also discovered a number of Tony Hancock clubs. His radio appearances in shows such as Variety Bandbox and Educating Archie were the start of his broadcasting career. Before this, in 1947, he visited Bognor Regis when he appeared at the Esplanade THeatre as a member of the Flotsam’s Follies. THis was while he was the resident comedian at the famous ‘Windmill’ theatre club in London. In 1961, Tony Hancock made the programme for which he is always remembered, ‘THe Blood Donor.’ But what of the film that was to make Bognor Regis well known, even if not for the

When members of the public were asked to appear in the film 'The Punch and Judy Man" nearly 2,000 people arrived at the Royal Norfolk Hotel to sign up.

f The iconic film, based in Bognor

f Tony Hancock with the crew right reason? Following the success of his television programmes, Tony Hancock wanted to extend his work further. He was never really satisfied with his art and was always seeking new avenues in which to work. With the help of Philip Oakes, he wrote the script for a film. It was a fictitious story about a small southern coastal town named Piltdown. THe main character was Wally Pinner - the Punch & Judy Man. His friend, the Sandman, who was a sand sculptor, and the local photographer, were deemed not to be socially acceptable in this quite snobbish seaside resort. As usual, Tony Hancock appeared almost as himself in a very melancholy portrait, while trying to establish himself as an important citizen. THe film was collaboration between Tony Hancock’s own company and Associated British. THe producer, Gordon Scott, asked for local volunteers to appear in the film. Nearly 2,000 people arrived at the Royal Norfolk Hotel, where they left their names and addresses so they could be contacted at a later time. A number of residents were selected to play their own part in the production. Many areas of the town became immortalised in the film, such as the Pier and Town Hall, alongside other areas including Spencer Street, Belmont St. and York Road, beside the Esplanade and Royal Hotel. Both the film crew and Tony Hancock stayed at the Royal Norfolk Hotel during filming. While making the film in 1962, Tony Hancock was engaged in various town activities and events, including the crowning of the Bognor Carnival Queen at the Rex Ballroom. Sidney James, also in the film, was captured by the local press playing with local children at the boating lake, off Crescent Road. THe advance reviews for the film described how the new comedy film was to take Tony Hancock away from his familiar backdrop of the London suburbs and his perceived position in life as a bachelor. For the first time in his career, he was to appear as a married man. He played the proprietor of a run-down Punch and Judy show on the “Sands of Piltdown Bay” at the end of the season. Many of the early advertising brochures for this film told members of the viewing public the history of Punch and Judy and invited the cinema managers to purchase, at a cost of 30/- per week, (£1.50) a threefold advertising display. Cinema managers were also advised to

invite the local Punch and Judy man to attend the cinema during the previous week’s films, to act as an advertising feature for the ‘forthcoming attraction.’ Other advertising for the film, remarked that “Hancock of THe Punch and Judy Man is a disenchanted rebel who wages an irreverent and uproariously funny battle against authority.” Tony Hancock was to operate a dilapidated Punch and Judy Show on the sands, while “cocking a snook at the town’s socialite set, including the mayor and council". Sylvia Sims played the part of Hancock’s wife, a woman who was trying to aspire to become part of the town’s social elite. THe film also included such stars as Ronald Fraser, Barbara Murray, Hugh Lloyd and John Le Mesurier. Members of the new Bognor Regis Film Club showed the film as part of the celebrations during its opening in January, 1981. THere were also limited showings of this film at the ‘Sands of Time’ event in 2001. THe film is now available on video for anyone wishing to recapture the style of the 1960’s. It shows many interesting scenes of Bognor Regis at that time – ideal for local historians! Tony Hancock, who was born on May 12, 1924, sadly died on June 25, 1968. He entertained thousands and left a legacy that he could only have dreamed of. He is now remembered as ‘the greatest genius of British comedy’, an accolade that he sought all his life.

topping Hastings & St Leonards, who bring an unbeaten run of five matches to the Regis Oval this weekend (12.30pm). One of those victories came last out against Chichester Priory Park when they won by 18 runs. Matthew Geffen's side show great spirit in pushing the league leaders all the way in a close match at Horntye Park. After batting first, Chi restricted Hastings to 182 for 8 with Joe De La Fuente taking 6-50 in an excellent bowling display. In reply, Chi had De La Fuente to thank once again as he made a gritty 47 to edge them to the target. But his dismissal took the wind out of Priory's sails and then came up short of springing a surprise. Next up for Chi is a home match against relegation-threatened Ifield at Goodwood tomorrow (12.30pm). In Division Three West, thirdplace Pagham will be looking to keep in the promotion hunt when they head to Steyning tomorrow (12.30pm). The Nyetimber Lane side came out four wicket winners against Broadwater last weekend, with a 90-run stand from Nick Smith (47*) and Wayne Green (49) guiding the home team past the visitors' score of 196 for 9.

MIDDLETON CC will be looking to make it back-to-back wins as they head to mid-table Eastbourne in the Sussex Premier Division tomorrow (11.30am). Sean Heather's side sit fourth in the standings after a comfortable eight-wicket win over Horsham at home last time out. Jack Carson's five for 22 was central to the victory, ensuring the visitors tumbled from 90-2 to 132 all out. Middleton then knocked off the runs in extra-quick time, with openers Harry Hovey (76 off 58 balls) and Heather (43) putting on 106 for the first wicket as the home side sealed the 30 point haul. Eastbourne will be a tough nut to crack though, having defeated perennial title challengers Preston Nomads by two wickets last time out. In Division Two, Bognor will be looking to get their fading promotion hopes back on track after a washout against Lindfield last week. Ryan Maskell's team would have fancied their chances as they headed to their struggling opponents last weekend. But their hopes were dashed by the rain with Bognor's ten points putting them fifth, 40 points off the top two. Tomorrow they will host table-

SIX hardy souls from Bognor Regis Cricket Club went the extra mile for a fundraising effort - by playing a mammoth four rounds of golf in a single day. Vice-chairman Andy Lee, first team captain Ryan Maskell, Mikey Harris, Scott Bingham, chairman Bernie Burns and Simon Love swapped bats for clubs for the epic challenge. It all started before the sun had even risen over Bognor Regis Golf Club in Downview Road, Felpham. But fuelled by coffee and bacon rolls, the two trios teed off and the gruelling challenge was underway. More than 12 and a half hours, 39,000 steps and 25 miles later, the stoic six completed the challenge, raising ÂŁ2,000 plus gift aid of ÂŁ415 to be given equally to Cancer Research UK and Bognor Regis Cricket Club. Bognor Regis Cricket Club chairman Bernie Burns said: "We couldn't think of a better way to raise money for two great causes very close to my heart. "Our fundraising consisted of spamming our friends, colleagues, family, cricket club members and loved ones for donations. "We started our challenge at 5.30am nervous about what was to come, by the end of the fourth round later that evening we were all contemplating doing another round for the sake of it. "Perhaps next year we will do five rounds in one day! "To say we had fun would be an understatement. "Personally, it is my top golfing memory

and I do not see anything beating it. "We are absolutely delighted to have raised £1,000 plus £207.50 gift aid for Cancer Research UK. Seventy two holes, one day and some funds for life saving research – absolutely brilliant!" Burns and the rest of the cohort were keen to thank the golf club for donating the use of their facilities and also to the dozens of people who donated funds. Half of the money will also support the

cricket club, which is based in Hawthorn Road and runs three Saturday sides, a women's team, a Sunday friendly team and a midweek XI. The junior section runs teams from under 9 to under 16. Burns said the cash would help fund much-needed equipment and to pay for coaching and development of the club’s juniors, women and men players. He added: "We welcome everyone in the community to play cricket."

Paine calls for patience as Lions look to rebuild NEW Pagham boss Bob Paine is calling for patience as he turns to youth to rebuild the first team squad. Lions have been perennial challengers on all fronts in recent years, chalking up top five finishes in the SCFL Premier with landing cup silverware. But a falloff in form last season saw the club slip to a bottom half finish and led to manager Tom Simmonds and a number of first team regulars leaving for pastures new. Its now up to former East Preston manager Bob Paine to pick up the pieces - and despite having six weeks to prepare for the new campaign, the new boss is confident his approach will deliver results. He said: "We have came into it quite late. Normally, once the season ends, we are planning for the next one and speaking to players from May time. "So we are behind the curve and that has made it challenging as we are playing catch up with everyone else. "We will get there. It may require some patience but rest assured we will be working very hard to get things right." Paine has recruited virtually

an entire new team with a number of players following him to Nyetimber Lane from EP. Many of the squad got their first taste of match action on home turf this past week, with a 2-2 draw against Guildford City on Saturday followed by a 3-2 win over SCFL Division One side Selsey in midweek. Lions' final friendly is tomorrow with Combined Counties Premier side AFC Hayes visiting the Lane (3pm). Paine said: "We have had a lot of new players coming in as players from last year and we will also be looking at other options. Everything will be challenging to start with and everyone will need to keep their nerve. "For me, I believe in putting infrastructure in place which is sustainable rather than a short-term approach. He added: "A lot of the boys who have featured so far have played for us at EP and before that at Worthing. "We have built up loyalty and they enjoy the way that we work, which is positive. "But we remain looking at other players that know around the circuit and we will see how we get on."

CHICHESTER City's preseason preparations step up a gear as they play two local rivals in the space of four days. Ahead of their first ever season at step four, Miles Rutherford's side are looking in good shape. Five friendlies played and five wins recorded by the SCFL Premier champions, the latest of which came in midweek with a 3-0 victory at Wessex Premier side AFC Portchester with goals from Lloyd Rowlatt and a brace from Josh Clack. But Chi will find out where they really stand ahead of their first match in the Isthmian South East campaign on August 17 at Ramsgate this week.

Tomorrow they welcome Isthmian Premier promotion hopefuls Worthing to Oaklands Park (3pm). Then on Tuesday its another step three side Bognor in the Sussex Charity Shield at Lancing's Culver Road (7.30pm). That match will be the last of Chi's pre-season friendlies before the season kicks off with an FA Cup extra-preliminary match against SCEFL Premier outfit Erith Town on August 10 (3pm). - Chichester City Ladies have been drawn against Cambridge City Ladies in the preliminary round of the National League Cup on August 25 at Oaklands Park (2pm).

Stradivarius primed to make Glorious history SUSSEX-BORN trainer John Gosden believes Stradivarius can make it three in a row when he lines up in the Goodwood Cup next week. The champion stayer is aiming to make history in the opening day highlight of the festival on Tuesday, the ÂŁ500,000 Group One Qatar Goodwood Cup, over two miles. The 4/5 favourite's biggest challenge is likely to come from Dee Ex Bee (5/1) who represents Mark Johnston, the man responsible for the only three-time winner of the Qatar race, Double Trigger (1995, 1997 & 1998) Stradivarius has looked as good as ever in two starts this season, capturing the Group Two Yorkshire Cup at York in May before landing the Gold Cup victory at Royal Ascot last month, in which he defeated Dee Ex Bee, Master Of Reality and Cross Counter. Speaking at a press event in Newmarket, Gosden said: "We are hopeful he can win the Goodwood Cup again, but it is going to be a tough race and there will be a lot of people aiming to make it a hard race it is going to be exciting. "Frankie [Dettori] and

Stradivarius gel so well together - they make a great team. Stradivarius is a bit unusual for a stayer, but he is a real street fighter. "He doesn't do a lot when he hits the front and I felt he was playing with them a bit at Ascot. He just does what he has to do and I think that has been huge contributory factor to his success." Gosden, who was born in Lewes, also has Europe's unbeaten champion two-yearold of 2018, Too Darn Hot, featuring in the ÂŁ1-million G1 Qatar Sussex Stakes over a mile on Wednesday. Following a setback in the spring and placed efforts in the G2 Dante Stakes at York, G1 Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh and G1 St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, the three-year-old registered his first victory of the campaign when dropped back to seven furlongs for the G1 Prix Jean Prat at Deauville on July 7. Gosden revealed that Frankel three-year-old filly Mehdaayih will take her chance in the ÂŁ600,000 G1 Qatar Nassau Stakes over nearly 10 furlongs on Thursday, August 1, a race the trainer has won four times already.

f Rocks manager Jack Pearce, left, with Robbie Blake during the Sussex Senior Cup final | Pic: Sussex FA

Sportinbrief î ? Rugby CHICHESTER RFC are recruiting players of all abilities to play for their three senior teams. The Oaklands Park side's first XV had a mixed campaign last time out, finishing in mid-table of the London One South. Thought to be one of the most competitive Level Six leagues in the country, the Blues are seeking new recruits to boost their bid for success in 2019/20.

The club has strong community links and play their matches in attractive parkland. Teams are based in a recently extended clubhouse. Pre-season is already underway with training on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 7.30pm to 9pm. Anyone interested, contact Paul Colley, director of rugby, on 07880 044023 or paul. colley6@gmail.com.

f Dan Smith in action for the Rocks

BOGNOR boss Jack Pearce admits there is "added spice" as Rocks prepare for the Sussex Charity Shield clash with neighbours Chichester City. With a fortnight to go until the Isthmian Premier season gets underway, the Nyewood Lane side look to be in good shape. Pre-season preparations continued in this week with a 1-1 draw at Wessex Premier side Horndean, with young midfielder George Bingham getting the Rocks goal. On Tuesday, things will step up a pace when the Sussex Senior Cup winners take on SCFL Premier champions in the county's annual curtain raiser, in aid of NSPCC. With plenty of connections between the two sides - not least former Rocks coach Darin Killpartrick now involved with City - Pearce said he expected a good contest at Lancing's Culver Road (7.30pm). Speaking ahead of the match to the Sussex FA, he said: “There is personal pride in this game with them being our neighbours. “They did ever so well last season and they are managed by our ex-player [Miles Rutherford] and also our ex-coach of 20 years [Dabba] so there’s added spice there.

Email: sport@sussexpost.co.uk

“There will be rivalry with the sets of fans and as a manager you want to be competitive and win every game but ultimately it is about player game time and raising lots of money. Once Tuesday is out the way, Rocks will round off their preseason friendlies with a trip to Southern Premier side Gosport Borough on Friday (7.45pm). Pearce partly eased his defensive worries with the loan signing of 18-year-old Joe Dandy from League One Portsmouth. The centre back briefly appeared for the Rocks during a loan spell in October, 2018. Now the club have moved to again add him to their ranks. On the squad, Pearce believed the club was in good shape, with additions such as James Crane and Stu Green giving Bognor experience across the pitch. The manager said: "We are pretty relaxed in terms of how our squad is looking, we are always looking to add quality and it is a concern to me that two centrebacks are injured and I’ve not identified a first team goalkeeper this season. “It could be that we recruit from within the squad and I have people who step up to the plate and we might not need anyone."
