ummer’s here and with the warm sunshine and numerous long weekends to enjoy, it’s the perfect time to head south — to the magical city of Minot, N.D. Statistics Canada estimates there were 358,600 total person-visits from Saskatchewan to North Dakota in 2012 (the most recent year figures are available), with most of them (65.5 per cent) traveling for pleasure. More than half the visits were same-day trips.

While there are no direct flights from Canada to Minot, many people spend a day or two in Minot on their way to or from other destinations. The newly renovated and expanded Minot International Airport makes that option even more attractive. The airport offers excellent parking, and many Minot hotels also offer parking for those travellers, along with shuttle service to the airport.

The main way to get from here to there is by road. If you drive yourself, it’s an

easy afternoon’s drive of 244 miles or 393 kilometers from Regina to Minot.

There are numerous border crossings dotting what is the longest undefended border in the world, several of them in Saskatchewan.

There’s a wealth of information on the Visit Minot website VisitMinot.org.

Visitors can use the My Map feature of the website to select the places they are interested in visiting and add them all to a personalized map of Minot. The map includes contact information for each venue and is printable so it can be taken on the trip.

Don’t fret if you didn’t plan far enough ahead to print the map. Visitors can access the handy mobile site from anywhere.

The mobile site is very easy to navigate and can be accessed from any mobile smartphone or tablet device.

The website also features a link to valuable coupons, information on events

happening in Minot, and information specific to Canadians at VisitMinot.org/ canadian-info. And coupon books and all the information a visitor might need are also available at the Visitors Center.

There’s little point in shopping if you can’t take it home with you, and Canadians staying more than 24 hours can take advantage of some exemptions to the duties levied on imported goods.

• Personal exemptions do not apply to same-day cross-border shoppers.

• After 24 hours or more, Canadians can take back goods valued at up to $200 (CAN). Alcohol and tobacco cannot be claimed. Goods must be in possession at time of entry to Canada. If the value of the goods exceeds $200 after a 24-hour absence, duty and taxes are applicable on the entire amount of the imported goods.

• After 48 hours or more, Canadians can bring home goods valued up to $800 (CAN) including alcohol

and tobacco, within the prescribed limits set by provincial or territorial authorities. Goods must be in your possession.

• After seven days or more, the maximum is also $800 (CAN) including alcohol and tobacco products. But, goods may be in possession at time of entry to Canada or can be sent later through courier, mail or delivery agency, except alcohol and tobacco, which must be in possession. All the goods will qualify for duty- and tax-free entry if they are declared at the initial return to Canada.

To ensure there are no hassles at the border before leaving for Minot, here are a few tips: • Remember to bring proper identification. Canadian citizens must present one of the following valid Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative-compliant documents when entering the U.S. by land: a valid passport, NEXUS

card, Free and Secure Trade (FAST) card, enhanced driver’s licence (EDL) or enhanced identification card (EIC), or Secure Certificate of Indian Status. Please contact U.S. Customs and Border Protection if you have any questions about the requirements for Canadians to enter the United States.

• Visit a Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) office to identify any valuables you may want to take to Minot from home. Items like cameras, jewelry and tablets can be itemized and recorded to ensure you have proof that your goods were in your possession prior to leaving Canada.

• Check with the CBSA if you plan to change or improve any part of your vehicle. If your vehicle breaks down while in Minot, you must declare the work when you arrive at the border.

You may have to pay duty and/or taxes on the work done.

Come down to go RVing

inot is often called the Magic City and, come this August, it could also be called the western Motor City, as hundreds of recreational vehicles (RVs) gather for a major celebration.

RVers will get together at the North Dakota State Fairgrounds Aug. 14 through 17 to celebrate a milestone in the history of the Family Motor Coach Association (FMCA) – its 100th International Convention and RV Expo.

“FMCA has hosted conventions at the North Dakota State Fairgrounds three times in the past, most recently in 2005; so, this will be a long overdue return visit,” FMCA events director Doug Uhlenbrock said in a news release. “Minot offers a small-town feel with big-town amenities and attractions and will make

a great destination for this special celebration of FMCA’s 100th convention.”

FMCA is the world’s largest not-forprofit association for RV owners, with approximately 400 chapters across the United States and Canada. The organization maintains its national headquarters in Cincinnati, OH, and currently has nearly 80,000 active member families.

FMCA offers its members a number of benefits, with perhaps the most important benefit being the camaraderie and friendships that develop among people enjoying the common interest of RV travel.

Uhlenbrock expects between 1,800 to 2,000 RVs, with about 4,000 people, to attend the convention and expo, including a number of Canadians.

members,” he says, and he encourages them to attend this year’s event in Minot.

“We hope they come down.”

And, that invitation extends to RV enthusiasts who are not FMCA members, too. Uhlenbrock says there will be day passes available for the public to look at all the RVs, tour the expo and meet

fellow RVers.

Whether with four wheels or six or more, Canadians can head south of the border to enjoy the attractions of Minot, while helping celebrate the FMCA’s milestone, visiting with fellow RV enthusiasts and learning more about their favourite vacation mode.

here is lots to do and watch in Minot this summer for sports fans of all ages.

Baseball is just another reason for Canadians to travel to Minot, home of the Minot State University Beavers and the Souris Valley Sabre Dogs baseball team, a member of the Expedition League. Last year the Sabre Dogs made an impact on the Magic City and attendees just love going out to watch baseball. One of the things that make going to a Sabre Dogs game so unique is the fan interaction. The Dogs incorporate activities for the kids in between innings. Their mascot, Ace, does a really good job at engaging fans, which creates an overall family fun environment.

Corbett Field was awarded the 2018 best summer collegiate ballpark by Ballpark Digest. These reviews assisted Minot in securing the 2019 Expedition League All Star Game this summer. The All Star festiv-

ities will start on July 15 and will be a twoday event with a fan fest and a home run derby. The Expedition League is growing, and recently announced the addition of the Wheat City Whiskey Jacks, a Brandon, MB, based team.

Corbett Field is also home to the Minot State University Beaver baseball team. Often referred to as one of the best ballparks in North Dakota, Corbett Field plays home to not just the Beavers and the Sabre Dogs, but many teams of many age groups. Bishop Ryan High School, Minot High School, the Minot Vistas and the Minot American Legion baseball teams all call Corbett home.

Live Professional Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) will be returning to Minot on July 13. Sponsor MMA is bringing fighters from Fusion Fight League and Warrior Camp to Minot. This event help at the Minot Municipal Auditorium is expected to bring people

from all over the region. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the fights start at 8 p.m.

Fun at the Fair

here’s something for everyone at the North Dakota State Fair (NDSF).

The award-winning fair runs from Jul. 19 to 27, featuring everyone’s favourites — from the agriculture shows and exhibits to the rides, food concessions and music.

Well into the second half of its first century, the fair’s overall success can be seen in the numbers, with an average of more than 300,000 visitors a year.

Stephanie Schoenrock, the director of development and communications for the fair, has a special invitation to Canadians. “We love Canadians,” she says, adding that visitors can take advantage of information and coupons on the NDSF website and can check for hotel room availability on the Minot Tourism website. There is even camping right on the fair grounds for those who want to be closer to all the action.

Schoenrock says one of the main attractions this year is KidSpace, an entire building devoted to youngsters, included free with admission. Handson activities will help them learn about and celebrate the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 landing on the moon. Play in the Lunar Playground, build a space rocket, explore the moon and more.

In Full STEAM Ahead, kids will go “Into Orbit” with EV3 LEGO robots on the 2019 first Lego League mission and game tables. Kids will learn to program an EV3 robot and work towards launching a rocket, sending meteors flying or moving an astronaut to safety.

Visitors of all ages can take advantage of numerous other free attractions throughout the fair and at the grandstand. There’s racing pigs and stunt dogs, a range of musical talent, and a hypnotist, magician, acrobats and much more. There’s even a shark encounter for the truly adventurous.

The food is always a big draw at the fair, and there are numerous new treats to sample this year, says Schoenrock. Fairgoers can go wild on Jul. 19 at the Food Frenzy competition targeted at current North Dakota State Fair food vendors. Each food vendor is encouraged to enter a new and unique Fair food that has never been sold before and fairgoers are encouraged to try these one of a kind foods created specially for the 2019 NDSF. New this year is the arrival of Crabtree Amusements, a new carnival and games operator. Schoenrock says it was time for a change. “We like to keep it fresh for fairgoers,” she says.

Paid events include NPRA Bull and Ranch Bronc Riding, Enduro Races and Outlaw Enduro Races and a star-studded line-up of musical guests. See top entertainers such as Tim McGraw, Rascal Flatts and more. Come celebrate with the Snowbirds!

ith Canada Day up Canada way on the first day of July, Saskatchewan residents heading south for the long weekend can enjoy even more than the shopping and attractions the Magical City of Minot offers. Staying an extra couple of days, they’ll be able to help the Americans celebrate their Independence Day, while cheering on one of the world’s favourite performance air teams – the Canadian Snowbirds and honouring one of Saskatchewan’s own.

The Dakota Territory Air Museum will co-host the Spirit of the Plains Airshow with the Canadian Forces Snowbirds on July 4 at the Minot International Airport.

During this Independence Day celebration, the skies over the Minot International Airport will be honored with a demonstration from the Snowbirds and other air show acts to celebrate the spirit of the plains and the U.S. independence. Gates open at 2 p.m. with the show taking place from 4-7 p.m. and it is free for the public to attend.

As exciting as the airshow will be, it’ll take on even more significance for Saskatchewan residents, as July 4 is Yogi Day at the airshow in honour of the late Lt.Col. D.F. ‘Yogi’ Huyghebaert OMM. A former commander of the Snowbirds, which are based in Moose Jaw, he was also a former Saskatchewan MLA and Cabinet minister.

He served as a Conservative Party MLA from 2000 to 2011, and was Minister of Corrections, Public Safety and Policing and later served as the province’s military liaison. He passed away in 2018.

In addition to enjoying all the shopping and other anenities Minot is known for, Saskatchewan residents can enjoy a free airshow featuring our very own Snowbirds and honouring a former Snowbird commander and Saskatchewan political leader.

They can also take in the Independence Day Festival events, a ball game and Nodak races and cap off the day with a free fireworks display at the North Dakota Fair Grounds.

ith summer comes outdoor fun, and Minot has numerous opportunities for visitors and residents alike to enjoy the great outdoors.

There are more than a dozen parks in the Minot Park District, offering something for everyone to enjoy.

The kids will like the Oak Park Splash Pad. Free to the public, Oak Park also includes a playground, a sand volleyball court, band shell, walking trails and picnic shelters.

In addition to its renowned zoo, Roo-

sevelt Park also features a swimming pool, sand volleyball, a playground, tennis courts, gardens and more. The $4 fee for the pool includes pool, kiddy pool and waterslide.

The Souris Valley Golf Course has 18 holes open for golfers of all ages and levels. The course features 6,759 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72.
