he summer sun is still shining bright and with the Labour Day and Thanksgiving long weekends coming up, it’s the perfect time to take advantage of the great shopping and all the backto-school specials in the Magical City of Minot.

Not only the perfect city for family getaways and couples’ weekends, Minot is also a shopping and tourism mecca for Canadians, especially those from southern Saskatchewan.

Statistics Canada estimates there were 358,600 total person-visits from Saskatchewan to North Dakota in 2012 (the most recent year figures are available), with most of them (65.5 per cent) traveling for pleasure. More than half the visits were same-day trips.

The main way to get there from here is by road. It’s an easy afternoon’s drive of 244 miles or 393 kilometers from Regina to Minot and closer for communities like Estevan that are nearer to the border.

the opportunities to sightsee and shop, there will still be room at an inn for visitors.

There are currently more than two dozen hotels/motels and a one-of-a-kind bed and breakfasts in Minot. Each has its own unique set of amenities to suit everyone’s fancy and many of the long-standing properties have undergone complete renovations making guests feel even more at home.

After spending some time at the Dakota Square Mall, with its more than 100 stores, you can head down to Main St., and Minot’s historic downtown shopping district. There you will find a wide selection of shopping enticements, cooking shops, specialty clothing shops and jewelry stores, some of which can’t be found in Canada.

There’s little point in shopping if you

can’t take it home with you, and Canadians staying more than 24 hours can take advantage of some exemptions to the duties levied on imported goods: • Personal exemptions do not apply to same-day cross-border shoppers.

• After 24 hours or more, Canadians can take back goods valued at up to $200 (CAN). Alcohol and tobacco cannot be claimed. Goods must be in possession at time of entry to Canada. If the value of the goods exceeds $200 after a 24-hour absence, duty and taxes are applicable on the entire amount of the imported goods.

• After 48 hours or more, Canadians can bring home goods valued up to $800 (CAN) including alcohol and tobacco, within the prescribed limits set by provincial or territorial authorities. Goods must be in your possession.

• After seven days or more, the maximum is also $800 (CAN) including alcohol and tobacco products. But, goods may be in possession at time of entry to Canada or can be sent later through courier, mail

To ensure there are no hassles at the border before leaving for Minot, here are a few tips: • Remember to bring proper identification. Canadian citizens must present one of the following valid Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative-compliant documents when entering the U.S. by land: a valid passport, NEXUS card, Free and Secure Trade (FAST) card, enhanced driver’s licence (EDL) or enhanced identification card (EIC), or Secure Certificate of Indian

Status. Please contact U.S. Customs and Border Protection if you have any questions about the requirements for Canadians to enter the United States.

• Visit a Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) office to identify any valuables you may want to take to Minot from home.

Items like cameras, jewelry and tablets can be itemized and recorded to ensure you have proof that your goods were in your possession prior to leaving Canada.

• Check with the CBSA if you plan to change or improve any part of your vehicle.

If your vehicle breaks down while in Minot, you must declare the work when you arrive at the border. You may have to pay duty and/or taxes on the work done.

DID YOU KNOW? Your cell phone, table or computer can be searched at the border the same way as your luggage. Both the Canadian Border Services Agency and the United States Customs and Border Protection can demand your passwords to search your devices.

At border controls, officers have widespread powers to stop and search people, and examine their baggage and other possessions including devices such as laptops and smartphones.

These activities are carried out under the authority of Canada’s Customs Act, so a warrant is not required.

MAKE IT A MINOT GETAWAY! Norsk Høstfest – the next generation

T

he Saskatchewan connection brings the second generation of Norsk Høstfest fans to the festival.

Bryan and Barb Cook only made it to Norsk Høstfest once, but the positive impact it had on them lasted a lifetime and inspired their daughter, Laurie Appel of Esterhazy, Sask. to buy tickets to this year’s Scandinavian festival in their memory.

“They went to Høstfest about 15 years ago,” Laurie said. “They wanted to go more, but their health just didn’t allow it.” Barb Cook died four years ago. Bryan Cook died this summer in June. They would often talk about their Høstfest experience and, when Bryan was dying of cancer, Laurie told him that she and her husband, Ernie, would go to Høstfest in Minot, someday. “He said, ‘You should! You absolutely should’,” Laurie recalled.

So, Laurie and Ernie bought Høstfest tickets this summer with some of the money that was left to them by her parents. Ernie will be wearing a button Bryan purchased at Høstfest that says “Help me, my wife is Norwegian!” It was

a button with fond memories, as Barb was of Norwegian heritage and Bryan was English.

Laurie will remember her mother, as she does every day, each time she looks at the “uffda” tattoo she got shortly after her mother’s death. Family members heard Barb say it so often that they chose to begin her funeral eulogy with the word “uffda”.

Barb was a wonderful lefse maker, Laurie said. Laurie and Ernie’s son has the recipe and made a batch, “but he said it’s not up to ‘grandma’s standard’.”

“I love lefse,” Laurie said. “That could be a meal! I could just eat that.” She and Ernie plan on eating more than lefse at Høstfest, though. “We like to try new stuff and eat the traditional foods,” she said. They will dine at En To Tre, the festival’s fine dining restaurant headed by world-class chefs who fly in from Norway and serve a six-course meal of Nordic cuisine. Food from Scandi, another restaurant operated by a team of chefs from Norway, is also on their must-eat list.

Laurie is hoping to find someone at Høst-

fest who can look at a book her grandmother (Barb’s mother) had as a child.“It’s quite old.”

She wants someone to read it “just to see if it’s Norwegian, or if I’m out to lunch,” she said with a laugh.

Ernie and Laurie look forward to seeing the Høstfest amenities Barb and Bryan talked so much about. “They kept going on about the entertainment. They really enjoyed the entertainment! They used to dance every weekend, so any kind of socializing – they loved that.”

Laurie said Barb and Bryan mentioned how “everything was just so organized.They were really impressed with that.”

Laurie experienced that organization firsthand when she ordered their Høstfest tickets online. She purchased tickets for all of the days, bus passes and more.

“All we have to do is get to our hotel and catch a bus” that will bring them effortlessly to Høstfest each morning and take them back again at night. “I love that you could buy everything online. It was all very user friendly,” Laurie said. Supplied by Norsk Høstfest.

NORSK HØSTFEST

North America’s largest Scandinavian festival will be held Sept. 25 to 28 at the North Dakota State Fair Center in Minot.

The four-day festival features seven general admission stages with hundreds of performances daily along with a Great Hall of the Vikings concert occurring twice-a-day. In addition to music, guests can find a Nordic Kitchen where Scandinavian chefs teach cooking classes and a live-action Viking Village that features authentic Viking activities and battle re-enactments.

An entire wing is dedicated to artisans who showcase traditional Nordic crafts and there are numerous other shopping, and dining options to enjoy.

The festival begins Tues. evening, Sept. 24, with the ScandinavianAmerican Hall of Fame honouree banquet and RV Pre-Party. Festival doors will open at 9 a.m., Wednesday to Saturday, (Sept 25-28). Ticket prices vary; concert tickets includes general admission to the festival.

Are you tough enough? Relief from joint pain is within reach.

F ans of the MMA (mixed martial arts) and other exciting sports can saddle on up and head over to where the real extreme sport takes place – the All Seasons Arena in Minot, where the annual Minot Y’s Men’s Rodeo and the RAM Badlands Circuit Final will take place Oct. 4 to 6.

The Minot Y’s Men’s Rodeo is again hosting the Ram Badlands Circuit Finals Rodeo, the championship of pro rodeo for the Dakotas, where the 100 best cowboys and cowgirls compete for the championship and a berth at the National Circuit Finals Rodeo.

Not only tough enough for the sport, the cowboys are also tough enough to wear pink. The rodeo asks participants and spectators to wear pink at the Friday event in support of cancer patients and survivors. “We are asking spectators and participants to wear pink. The cowboys are tough enough to wear pink,” says Ruth Nicolaus, the rodeo spokesperson. The campaign raises funds to provide patients access to Trinity Health’s cancer exercise rehab program at the Minot Family YMCA, which offers dramatic results in the quality of life and rehabilitation for those fighting cancer. More than $717,000 has already been raised over the past dozen years.

Canadians, too, can swap out the red and white for pink and head south for the rodeo. “We get a fair number of Canadians. They come down for the weekend,” Nicolaus says. She points out that the rodeo is more than the evening events. “There’s something to do every day,” she says.

What Nicolaus terms the “original extreme sport,” the rodeo features traditional events such as bull riding, saddle bronc, bareback, tie down roping, steer wrestling, and barrel racing. As one

of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association sanctioned events of the rodeo season, the indoor event consistently draws the top riders and top stock in the industry.

Unlike the person to person contact in boxing rings or other extreme sports venues, only half of the pairs competing at the rodeo are human, and that can be pretty exciting. “The bulls and the horses didn’t get the memo telling them how to behave, I guess,” Nicolaus says. “You may have a gold championship belt buckle, but that bull can’t read. We love the unpredictability. As humans, we love that in anything. That’s fun,” Nicolaus says.

While offering non-stop excitement, the rodeo also offers family-friendly entertainment, says Nicolaus. “It’s America’s original extreme sport,” she says, adding that, unlike other professional sports, it’s pretty wholesome. Family Day, on Saturday, Oct. 5, will feature discounted admission prices for the afternoon performance at 1 p.m. Not only are kids able to enjoy the fun, other kids will benefit as proceeds from the rodeo go to support the Minot Family YMCA and the Triangle Y Youth Camp at Garrison, N.D. Shoppers can take advantage of any breaks in the action to rope in some great products at the Badlands Expo & Trade Show located in the same building as the rodeo. With two locations within the center, the show has a wide range of Western related items for sale.

inot is well known for its many attractions, and this time of year there are many things to see and do, some of them downright scary.

The kids can say Boo at the Zoo on Oct. 26 from 1 to 4 p.m., with their costumes ready for Hallowe’en, they can bring their baskets for treats and fall-themed enrichment fun. While families can say boo to the okapis, black-footed ferrets and red pandas on that day, too, they can make an earlier visit to the zoo in to mark those species special days. International Red Panda Day will be marked on Sept. 21, with the National Black-Footed Ferret Day on Sept. 26. In October, it’s the okapis’ turn, on World Okapi Day on Oct. 18. Featured activities and information on these

days helps raise awareness of the plight these animals face in the wild.

While visiting the zoo, visitors and residents alike will enjoy the Hay Days Fall Festival on Sept. 21. More details are yet to come on the event, which will feature fall fun, a farmers market, music and more at a location to be announced.

Think you’re too old for the zoo?

There’s still lots of screams to be had for the grown-ups at the Dakota Square Mall’s first ever the Asylum of Fear Haunted House. Billed as “an event to remember” the haunted house will be held in part of the old Sears location for six days, Oct 18 to 19, 24 to 26 and 31. Not intended for young children, parental guidance is advised. Tickets at the door will be $20.

Get a jump on your Christmas shopping and decorating at the Festival of Trees on Sat. Nov. 23 at the North Dakota State Fair Center.

Again this year, the Dakota Hope Clinic is hosting the festival, with Christmas trees, wreaths and other holiday items available. Doors open at 5 p.m. with the live auction of beautifully decorated trees at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 at the door. In addition to all the items available to buy, or simply look at to get some great ideas for your own home, there will also be hors d’oeuvres and entertainment.

Take the family along for the free public viewing of the trees and other creations during the day from 10 a.m. to 2 pm.

Proceeds from the Festival of Trees go to helping Dakota Hope Clinic continue its mission to support women and men dealing with unintended pregnancy, and the trees are donated by local businesses and individuals.

With numerous Christmas items to choose from, and the proceeds going to a charitable organization, it’s the true meaning of Christmas in action.

t’s never too early to get a start on holiday shopping, and there will be lots of options to choose from at the 44th annual Big One Art & Craft Fair at the North Dakota State Fair Center Nov. 1 to 2.

This is the perfect time of year to treat yourself or someone special with something unique. Shop more than 250 vendors at 475 booths for handmade home décor, furniture, candles, jewelry, framed art, photography, sewn items and clothing, upcycled/ repurposed items, soaps, lotions and other homemade bath and body products, baked goods and more.

Ten thousand people visited the fall show last year and Stacy Frank, who, along with wife Lisa, operates the show says the attraction is the fact that this show focuses solely on products created by hand that represent

the true craft industry.

“What’s unique about our shows, versus a lot of other shows, we require exhibitors to have handmade items by themselves. That’s why people keep coming back, and back, and back,” he says.

Like the attendees, many of the exhibitors also return year after year.

But, that’s not to say there’s nothing new. “We always get 20 to 30 per cent new vendors each year, so it’s always new products and fresh, new looks.

There’s a good mix of new vendors and new products. It’s just amazing what people can create and make,” Frank said.

The fair will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2nd.

Admission is $3 for adults; children ages 12 and under enter free.
