Rubbish bins’ emphasis on style won’t go to waste Receptacles add flash to concealing trash REBECCA KEILLOR FOR THE VANCOUVER SUN
Chucking things out is cathartic. It feels great to decide you don’t need something anymore and get rid of it, but doing so has become more complicated since we became more aware of our waste — either by choice, or adhering to curbside collection ‘guidelines.’ Now we sort paper from tin and it seems our waste receptacles have stepped up, design-wise. Here’s five worth rummaging for:
Totem For those who want to take the brain work out of sorting your trash and acquire a gorgeous design piece at the same time, Joseph Joseph’s Totem waste separation and recycling unit comes with a removable food waste caddy, a general waste compartment, an odour filter and two multi-purpose drawers. Vancouver Special; from $275
Caw
One man’s trash A collection of woven rattan waste bins by Ligne Roset are titled Along. They offer a stylish receptacle for anywhere you want to disguise what’s inside in a design piece. Dry goods only, of course. Livingspace Interiors; from $170.
Pretty palette
Like a happy parrot in the corner of your kitchen or bathroom, the Umbra corner can comes in a range of cheerful colours — orange, red and yellow — as well as classic black. The design allows it to fit flat against a wall or snugly into a corner. Hudson’s Bay; $12.99.
Sunny day Like a magical dustbin that promises to transport you to another place entirely or a prop from Sesame Street, the royal gold waste can at CB2 will make beautiful any thing you castoff. CB2; $69.95.
It’s hard to argue with Ikea’s clean, modern colour palette, featured again in their incredibly practical Knodd bins. Durable, these bins can be used anywhere in your home, including damp environments as they simply wipe clean and are easy to empty, as the lid can be secured to the edge of the bin. Ikea; $16.99
