dear carl and reece

i saw your recent column in ‘Your Postcode’ about staying safe online do you have any more tips?

thanks ray we're glad you're finding the information useful. one of the key signs to look out for is the url of a website (its web address). if this doesn't end with a familiar domain name extension such as .com, .org and .net, steer clear stay away if the url is incomplete (no trailing slash at the end).

Beware of strange characters such as “%” or “?”.another red flag is when a website is spelt incorrectly check that a site has a valid ssl certificate you'll be able to identify this as a padlock in the address bar at the top of the screen. proceed with caution if there isn't a padlock icon, as the website may not be secure.

the garden show is back and ‘set to Bloom’.twenty nine years ago the first garden show at stansted park in hampshire was created as a forum for the smaller family run businesses and to showcase the work of talented artisans particularly those who couldn’t afford the larger, more commercial shows. gardening was visibly becoming more fashionable and accessible as people realised that you didn’t have to be that knowledgeable to make your garden look great and there was a thirst for good design, plants and garden products.the first show consisted of about 30 enthusiastic stands and an art exhibition.

THE CAT & RABBIT RESCUE CENTRE

Hulky Bear

hello from your favourite out and about reporter at the cat and rabbit rescue centre, hulky Bear.

i am pleased to let everyone know that our last article’s pet of the month, the very handsome male cat reg, has now found his forever home in this edition’s article i wanted to tell you about the sweetest kitten who was born atthe centre recently little ginger georgie has had a difficult start but my staff are doing everything they can to give him the best chance of a happy life georgie was born with a slight deformity in his front legs, which at four days old the vet diagnosed as compacted tendons when georgie was first diagnosed, our vet was hopeful that as he grew his legs would start to straighten unfortunately, georgie’s progress was more gradual than the vet would have liked and he

was still struggling to walk at four weeks old little georgie was big enough to be fitted with splints that we hoped would help his legs straighten. his little makeshift splints are made from shortened cotton buds attached to his legs with vet tape although he was not overly keen on the splints to start with, he is now getting used to wearing them. georgie wears them during the day when my staff are around so they can keep an eye on them. my staff are also continuing his therapy by encouraging him to walk with and without his little splints on.

i have my paws crossed that it will work out for georgie and he will be able to live a happy life in the future your support and donations mean that crrc can continue to support animals like georgie on his rehabilitation journey if you would like to see updates on georgie’s progress do have a look at our facebook page

A MALEVOICE CHOIR,

for many people a malevoice choir conjures up the sounds of welsh miners singing hymns in english or welsh.

whilst the solent malevoice choir has a musical director who is welsh their repertoire has, in recent years, expanded to include a wider range of music, some of it very modern and especially arranged.

a popular piece for many male voice choirs is “an americantrilogy” made famous by elvis presley. smvc now have their own celtictrilogy:allthrough the night, danny

kindness of our donors and other community organisations we estimate that it will take five years to fully stock the arboretum of about 250 special trees and we are well on the way to reaching this target. By this time the area will be a place of quiet enjoyment and reflection our estimate of the cost of purchasing, planting, administration and long term care of the trees is approximately £250 we are therefore asking donors to contribute this sum if they wish to link their donation to remembering a loved one however any greater amount will be appreciated and we welcome other donations from individuals and business/community organisations. the names of loved ones will be added to a roll of honour retained in museums and libraries in the borough and included on our website www evma org uk we will be delighted to welcome residents from other parts of the borough to join in this unique community project if you have any questions or require further information, i will be pleased to answer them and can be contacted on: 01243 377 355 or email at: brendan.gibbgray@talktalk.net

PET OFTHE MONTH - Biscuit Crunch & Brandy Snap

this time we would love to introduce you to beautiful sisters Biscuit crunch and Brandy snap these two bunnies arrived at the centre back in January after their owner no longer had the time to care for them and felt it would be best for them to find a new home Biscuit crunch is a white, ginger and black rex and her sister Brandy snap is white and grey, they are both two years old.they are both sweet and friendly rabbits, but they can be a little nervous and are not that keen on being picked up if you

are calm and quiet with them, they will come over for a treat and a stroke Biscuit crunch and Brandy snap would be best suited to a home with older or no children as they may worry about loud noises or sudden movements.they are really a very sweet pair that in the right home we believe would flourish.

if you think you may be able to offer Biscuit crunch and Brandy snap a loving home please give the centre a call on 01243 967111 or visit our website www.crrc.co.uk.

BUT NOT ASYOU MAYTHINK

songs from the shows are always popular with audiences. so new arrangements of “there is nothin’ like a dame” from south pacific and a medley from the sound of music are there to lighten any concert programme.

from our old repertoire. however, these new songs, arranged specifically for us, are great fun. we are all enjoying the change, the variety and the challenge”

Boy andthe skye Boat song more innovative are the arrangements of the flying pickets hit “onlyyou”, and paul mccartney’s “Blackbird”. soon smvc will be adding Jeff lynne’s “mr Blue sky” to the list

dave mcvittie, chairman of the solent malevoice choir says “we haven’t forgotten our roots. we do still sing many of the old mvc standards.we have several long term members and they would soon complain if we turned away

the smvc will be singing in many concerts this year: in st faith’s, havant; in st george’s, portsea; at the emsworth show; in st faith’s, lee-on-the-solent; in portchester and back in st faith’s, havant at christmas. many opportunities to hear an excellent male voice choir singing something different.

YOUR MONEY

Rewarding your staff

one of the best ways to show employees your appreciation is to offer them benefits in kind, (otherwise known as ‘perks’),these are payments made in cash or through the provision of goods or services that you make to your employees outside of the paye system. however, before you start putting together your employee benefits package, you should keep in mind that hmrc treat each benefit differently – some are taxed, while others are not so it is important to take a careful look at both the advantages and tax implications before offering benefits to your employees

hmrc defines benefits as anything of monetary value that you provide to your employees which isn’t “wholly, exclusively and necessary” for them to perform their contractual duties. for example, if you provided a vehicle to a delivery driver or sales representative, hmrc would consider the vehicle essential to their work.

Examples of benefits in kind hmrc has a long list of expenses and benefits. some common examples, where tax may not have to be paid include:

• staff meals provided at a canteen

• accommodation, supplies and services on your business premises

• payments to a pension

• certain types of childcare arrangements

• christmas or other annual party

• mobile phones

• Bicycles and cycling safety equipment and some examples of taxable benefits in kind:

• company cars for personal use

• private medical insurance

• school fees for employees’ children

• interest-free or cheap loans to employees over £10,000

• holidays or holiday vouchers

• non business travel and entertainment expenses if you provide an employee with a taxable benefit in kind, they will pay the financial value or cash equivalent of the benefit on top of their income tax.you may also need to pay class 1a employer national insurance (ni) contributions on the taxable value of the benefit.

Reporting benefits to HMRC as an employer, you need to let hmrc know that your employees receive benefits in kind form p11d must be completed for each employee and submitted by 6th July following the end of the relevant tax year you’ll also need to provide a copy of the form to your employee you must also complete and file a p11d(b) form.this is a summary of each individual p11d form you have completed so hmrc can calculate how much ni you need to pay on the total expenses and benefits provided.

alternatively, you can pay the tax on benefits through your payroll.to do so, you’ll need to register with hmrc before the start of the tax year (6th april).

Important

the tax rules around benefits in kind are complex.this article is only a brief overview to show how they can incentivise your employees and help you to attract new staff. for more information, please check the gov.uk website or speak to your accountant.

Health & Well-being Health and fitness in 2023

i love it when spring is here and all the flowers start to come out to bloom! But its not just our houses and gardens that we need to clean up, what about having a spring clean for the body?

our liver has a very important job to do and we can so easily ignore warning signs that all is not well.all the blood leaving the stomach and intestines passes through the liver and gets broken down to create the nutrients that we need. it also metabolizes drugs into forms that are easier to use for the rest of the body so imagine how overloaded this can get. another main function is detoxification, so that we can feel our very best every day and have the energy and zing to not just survive, but truly thrive if your liver is struggling to cope these could be some of your warning signs...

• abdominal pain and swelling

• swelling of the legs and ankles

• itchy skin

• dark colour urine

• pale colour poo

• chronic fatigue

• nausea or vomiting

• skin and eyes that appear yellow of course go and get bloods checked if you feel you have serious liver disease, but the majority of us can do a lot to help the liver function so much better these things can be super simple too

start by introducing these drinks into your daily diets:

• ginger and lemon tea

• oatmeal drinks

• turmeric drinks

• green tea

Beetroot, carrot, apple and ginger juices are fantastic at cleansing the liver and boosting your immune systempurify the blood and add essential liver cleansing vitamins and mineral into the blood stream such as potassium, vitamin c and anti-oxidants.

the best superfood powders or herbs to cleanse the liver are: reishi mushrooms, dandelion tincture, milk thistle, cardamom and chicory root. and if you want to know what foods to eat every day you should include: Broccoli, green vegetables, grapefruit,

Spring clean your insides...

Life

is for thriving…not just surviving

ries, ries, olive oil and a heap of fresh ginger and garlic

ou know you have some of the above symptoms and r want to speed track your liv better health then castor oil packs ar fantastic - all you need is some organic caster oil and a m can also be great top help digestion, bloating, period pains, endometriosis, constipation and bloating, amazing for your immune system.

all you need to do is cover the muslin cloth in caster oil - place it over the liver area, or area of pain and cover with a

proper caster oil pack or simple some cling film (eco of course) leaving this on over night seems to work best when you are fasting and not eating.this helps to shift stagnant energy and move toxins out of the body. doing this at least three times a week is ideal.

and last but not least - eXercise!! you’ve got to move your body every day in order to oxygenate and create healthy cells. exercise is not just a twice a week thing...it's daily if you put in the effort you will get the rewards!

Gardening

may & June are busy times in the garden and the more preparation you do now will reap rewards throughout the summer

if you have been busy germinating your own seeds, your window sills and greenhouses will be full of containers with developing seedlings. once the danger of frost has passed, these can be planted out but in the meantime, pinch out top leaves to promote bushy growth and try to put them out during the daytime to harden off.

any shrubs in your garden could now benefit from some attention. prune

Jobs in the garden in May & June

back any pure green leaves on variegated shrubs such as privet and euonymus and remove any unsightly frost damage by cutting back to healthy growth. roses will get off to a good start by applying a rose feed followed by a mulch of around 5cm of garden manure

at this time of year we are all well into the routine of regularly cutting our lawn’s. there is a view, however, that we should maybe consider the impact of this on wildlife and the environment. we all enjoy the appearance of a neatly cut lawn but some leading gardeners think we should consider our options. monty don has now become well known for his mantra ‘no mow may!’. some suggestions are leaving a small area uncut or maybe cutting attractive pathways through the longer grass or leaving circular areas of longer grass. however, if you enjoy a well cut lawn now is the time to do some work to achieve this by raking up dead grass and then applying a spring lawn feed to boost growth. you can however, spend some time eparing your soil for the new spring and summer growth – you can recycle old compost from the previous year’s pots and containers. also try and keep on top of weeds that are starting to choose a sunny day and use a

hoe to cover large areas quickly – do avoid using a hoe if the soil is damp some vegetables can now be planted outside in the ground or in containers. soil preparation and ensuring the correct

vegetable growing. ensure that the soil has been dug over to leave a fine finish that resembles bread crumbs, and is free of weeds and large stones. do not over plant and make sure you comply with the spacing suggestions on the packets.as we move into may you can plant out more, but check the growing instructions for each individual plant.

Watersports advice aims to protect wildlife

New resources from Bird Aware Solent will help watersports enthusiasts stay nature-friendly

the guidance features a unique online map which pinpoints wildlifefriendly routes for kayaker and stand-uppaddle boarders the interactive plan also shows windsurfers and kite surfers where to launch and land to minimise disturbance to birds and their fragile habitats.

handy tips on amenities such as parking and toilets also feature on the map, with clickable icons revealing descriptions of each launch point photographs and relevant advice for each location are included such as required permits, tides and even suggested picnic spots

david williams, lead local authority chief executive of partnership for south hampshire, the body that oversees Bird aware solent, said: ‘with a growing interest in outdoor activities like paddle boarding, there is a risk of more disturbance for protected birds and wildlife habitats By taking steps to enjoy watersports in a wildlife-friendly

way, we can ensure our beautiful coastline and its abundant wildlife thrives in future generations ’

Julie sims, the Bird aware solent ranger who developed the guidance in collaboration with local watersports groups said: ‘spending time on the water gives people the chance to spot and appreciate wildlife from a unique perspective By making a few adjustments to our behaviour, we can minimise our impact on nature

‘it’s great when people appreciate that the natural places that enrich our own lives are also vital feeding and resting places for our birds.’

the map is accompanied by specific behavioural guidance that paddle and wind sports enthusiasts can adopt in order to reduce disturbance

tips for watersports participants include rigging up and keeping kit at the top of the beach since the water’s edge is often a feeding area for birds paddle boarders can help birds thrive by keeping a low profile when they are near wildlife by kneeling rather than standing up similarly kayakers and

canoers can reduce their impact on nearby wildlife by having a low paddle angle the interactive map and downloadable guides can be found on the Bird aware solent website: www birdaware org recommended routes and launching points feature on the map include the new forest coast and southampton water, including the rivers itchen and hamble over the coming months, the map will be extended to the remainder of the solent, including the isle of wight, in collaboration with watersports organisations in these areas thousands of birds come to the solent coast for the winter each year Bird aware solent works on coastlines around the new forest, southampton water, portsmouth, chichester and langstone harbours and the northern coast of the isle of wight it is formed of a partnership of 19 different local authorities and wildlife organisations. the wide range of recreational activities which take place on the

solent coast, can often unintentionally result in disturbance to the birds that spend the winter here Bird aware solent aims to mitigate the impact of additional recreational activity resulting from new homes built by raising awareness of coastal birds and encouraging people to adopt wildlife aware behaviours.this mitigation is designed to ensure additional activity has no significant effect on the three special protection areas (spas) in the solent: solent and southampton water spa, portsmouth harbour spa, and chichester and langstone harbours spa

The DIY Will

3 west street, emsworth, hants po10 7dX property prices have risen dramatically over the recent years, and so has the number of inheritance claims. according to reports this, along with the increase in homemade wills, especially during covid lockdowns, and the use of diy online will writing services, has increased the number of disputes between family members over estates by 60% Because of the lack of knowledge of the law and understanding about howwills must be written, or if the onlinewill is not made in full knowledge of potential issues, the deceased’s wishes written in thewill may be ambiguous -one family member can read thewill as if it means one thing whereas another can place a completely different interpretation on the wording these ambiguities can lead to very costly family disputes we have seen many errors in homemade wills including: -

1 thewill not being correctly signed and witnessed in one case thewill was witnessed by the wife of one of the deceased’s sons (who had fallen out with his brothers) but her having done so meant he lost his inheritance

2 thewill says,“i leave my house to my daughter and the rest of my money to my son” however, the house was sold in the deceased’s lifetime to fund care home fees so the daughter receives nothing, and the son receives all the remaining cash the statistics show that there is a greater risk of a homemade will being challenged on the basis that the deceased was influenced or did not understand what they were signing. a professionally drawn will is less likely to be challenged as the solicitor will have experience in ensuring the will complies with the law, deal with all the “what ifs” and use wording which has a clear legal meaning and interpretation.

the only advantage of a homemade will is the cost saving. however, that saving is insignificant when compared to the costs of a disputed will . whilst writing awill may not be the top of your to do list having a clear well drafted will will ensure your wishes are followed for more information please contact one of our solicitors:- penny smith, marie slavov, chris halliwell or Joan smith

Don’t stop Wining

Easy Reds

Jonathan looks at which kind of reds are easier to drink in warmer weather.

this time of year, i always see a change in buying patterns based on what kind of weather we are experiencing. spring is officially here which means longer evenings and warmer days. although we have had the longer evenings, the warmer days have yet to arrive despite that it is time where most of us start to swap the rich fullbodied reds to something a little lighter and easy drinking.

while we will never tire of rosé wine, which we also start to consume more this time of year, the lighter reds are perfect for drinking with BBQ food or just by themselves and don’t forget about the possibility of chilling them down slightly.

the thing to remember is the lighter the red the better reds with loads of fruit and soft tannins cope better with chilling than the full bodied, heavy numbers. stick to grapes such as pinot noir, gamay (reds from the Beaujolais region are made from this beauty) and some lighter cabernet sauvignon’s from california and other new world regions. grenache is another fruity favourite and can be a fantastic partner to cold dishes on a hot day don’t over chill the wine as this can strip any flavours and aromas and don’t put ice cubes in the glass.this will water the wine down adding a thin, dull character

some reds are fruitier than others which often leads to a velvety character with a smooth balanced body this mak them easier to drink on their own, they can often be heavier in alcohol. these tend to be darker and deeper in colour often from warmer regions. shiraz from australia or primitivo fr the puglia region are typical of this style

Do you have Full or Partial dentures or suffer from missing teeth?

implant surgery is a big decision, choosing amir to carry out the procedure was not. he and his team have always demonstrated the utmost professionalism and care, before, during and after my operations. following a serious motor cycle accident as a very young man, i have had much reconstructive work over the years and, quite simply put, amir stands out as the best dental surgeon i have ever had. Bl

“…well words can not suffice to recommend amir on the end results of my implants .over the whole procedure he explained the whole treatment plan and how long it was going to take the quality and care you receive from amir and his team is first class. now i have the perfect smile again.thank you amir and your team.

amir took me on as a 90 year old patient with five teeth and with a couple of ancient ill-fitting dentures.

eating had become an uncomfortable and miserable process eventually amir advised the use of implants which were painlessly fitted and after several months of endless care and patience he produced a perfect fit for the new teeth.

the transformation has been amazing as i can now again enjoy the simple pleasures of crunching an apple or chewing beefsteak. if you are recommended implants, struggle with the cost and go for it, you will never regret it, and you may be sure that amir will look after you very well” eric p

“it’s been five years since having my implants.i’m over the moon with the results as i can now eat and smile without the worry of wearing a denture”

“absolutely delighted with my crowns you've made me smile again thank you so much!”

“…dentist and team did a really good job on my chipped tooth. made me feel relaxed and welcome highly recommended!”

“…i had two implants done on the same day! no pain, just great looking teeth!”

“…at first i was very unsure, despite my denture becoming very tiresome, but i gradually gained confidence after speaking to amir, and eventually had implants. i’ve had no problems and said goodbye to the denture”

“i had a loose very poor fitting lower denture which i couldn't eat with i was told that i could have implants clipped on to a new denture i couldn't believe how straight forward the procedure was no pain at all i can now eat, smile and talk”

“ after seeking recommendations, i made a decision to go to amir for my implants they healed wonderfully, and the colour match is perfect. no one knows i have them”
