Disease-resistant elms planted supplied by Hampshire Forest partnership and planted at Bartons road in Havant by volunteers from Havant Borough tree wardens, st alban’s church and HBc councillors. .

Large elms used to be a common sight in Hampshire until they were devastated by dutch elm disease between the late 1960s and early 1980s. these disease-resistant elms are specially bred to withstand dutch elm disease and are part of a Hampshire-wide trial. elm flower buds are the sole food plant for caterpillars of the white-letter hairstreak butterfly which gets its name from the letter "w" that is formed from a series of white lines found on the underside of the hindwings. this species suffered as a result of dutch elm disease, especially in southern sites, to the extent that there was concern it might become extinct in the British isles. dutch elm disease (ded) is spread by elm bark beetles. evidence suggests the ded pathogen ophiostoma ulmi could be endemic to Japan. ded caused by o ulmi was first observed in north-west europe about 1910. although it is believed to be of asian origin, the disease got its name from the team of dutch pathologists who carried out research

on it in the 1920s. after causing losses of between 10% and 40% in a number of european countries, this first epidemic had died down by the 1940s, probably because the fungus was susceptible to viruses. a second and much more destructive outbreak of the disease began in the late 1960s, caused by a different and much more aggressive fungus o novo-ulmi introduced into the uk on infected elm logs imported from canada. the new epidemic took rapid hold, especially of english elm trees in lowland regions of central and southern Britain during the early to mid-1970s, leading to the deaths of most of our mature english elms by the early 1980s.

trafalgar walk runs between west street Havant and the bus station. this narrow unattractive alleyway - pictured right, suffers from ad hoc graffiti which is unsightly and often offensive to pedestrians using this important link to the town centre. the plan is to introduce trafalgar themed street art to the walls similar to the many examples appearing elsewhere - particularly in portsmouth.

each year we hold a Horticultural about making some brownies or a lemon show full of exciting classes and we meringue pie. For keen photographers, would really like to encourage more you could enter a photograph on a people to get involved. if you have variety of topics – at the water’s edge, never entered before, this is the year to transport, nature or any other subject. have a go. it is very easy to enter, is good not forgetting handicrafts and flower fun and if you are successful, there is arranging – everything is covered and prize money and certificates to be won. you can just enter some mixed garden or if you have some roses in your seasonal flowers arranged in a vase/jar or garden you can enter just a single stem, in a cup and saucer. or a selection of up to 5 roses. all you need to do is pick them the morning of the show and come along and display them – we provide all the display vases, water etc and there is always someone around to give help and advice. there are also classes for sweet peas, herbs, fruit and vegetables. there is a class for just one flower bloom and a vegetable or we particularly enjoy the entries from even the wonkiest vegetable and the our junior members and we offer the most fragrant rose bloom. opportunity to grow a marigold or arrange there are classes for cookery enthusiasts and novices – if bread making some flowers or present a piece of creative is your skill then make some focaccia or work – a painted pebble, a sock puppet or a miniature seaside garden. soda bread, or you prefer cakes, how

Last year’s show attracted 700 visitors! you will no doubt be busy in your gardens this month as everything starts to appear and as the last frosts subside, you can think about getting more things outside. preparing your pots and containers for some new plants is something to think about this month as last year’s compost will have been depleted. it is always a good idea to put some stones or broken china in the bottom for drainage and maybe a little garden soil mixed in with your new compost. some vegetables can now be planted outside in the ground or in containers.

the south downs national park is marking its 15th birthday by announcing a major upcoming consultation that will help decide future priorities.

Following decades of campaigning and public inquiries, the south downs national park finally came into being on 31 march, 2010 after first being mooted in the 1920s.

Fifteen years on, a great deal has been achieved for nature, climate and communities. yet there’s still so much more to be done to protect and enhance the landscape, as well as create opportunities for people to enjoy it, all while facing growing challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, water pollution and economic uncertainty. a public consultation will run from June to august on a new draft partnership management plan, which is an overarching plan setting out the goals for the national park over the next five years. it will replace the current partnership management plan. the plan is produced by the authority but is a shared plan for the national park developed alongside dozens of other stakeholders, including farmers, landowners, local authorities, parish councils, environmental bodies, businesses, community groups and residents. the draft plan going out for consultation will include goals around nature, climate, people and place. Following feedback from the public and partners, the new plan will be adopted and begin from January 2026.

Students Perform at Dance Live 2025

in February, 39 Havant academy students attended dance Live 2025. dance Live is a competition/ performance opportunity for schools and colleges to showcase their talents at portsmouth guildhall. each school or college has to come up with a concept and tell that story through the art of dance.this year Havant academies concept was 'enigma'.telling the story of the famous British mathematician alan turing, who conceived modern computing and played a crucial part in the allied victory over nazi germany in ww2 with his creation of enigma. our journey started back in July 2024 when auditions were held to decide who would play what characters. students then spend 2 or 3 times a week rehearsing and developing rehearsals before the evening's show. once movement for their 7-minute piece. we got to show night all hands-on deck students worked incredibly hard and getting hair. makeup and costume ready for showed real dedication to resistance their performance. during this process. students performed brilliantly and really with dance Live being a full production, told the story of alan turing well. they costumes, lighting, props and the Led screen were a credit to the school and showcased which forms the setting of the entire piece their hard work on that stage. For many had to be planned and created. students it was their first time performing students and staff arrived at dance on a big stage, making themselves and Havant Live at lunch time giving them an academy proud.we went away with the award opportunity to do a few technical for 'Best concept'.

during national apprenticeship week, Havant academy hosted an apprenticeship evening for years 9, 10 and 11 in February. the event was organised in partnership with Hampshire county council and Havant Borough council to promote apprenticeships and training opportunities offered by 39 local businesses. the event was well attended by students who were either looking for apprenticeships, curious about apprenticeships or just gathering information to help them make more informed decisions in the future. as part of the event, parents were also invited along to use the ‘parent hub’. this offered support to any parents thinking of a career change. students also took part in a raffle with great prizes donated by a variety of local businesses

including tesco, papa Johns and screwfix. some inquisitive students received a ‘golden ticket’ from an employer that was impressed with their engagement on the evening. some students received more than one ticket. these students will be celebrated by the school in our end of term assembly.

Stellar Students Embark on Cosmic Adventure at South Downs Planetarium in march, twenty-seven eager year 7 students embarked on an unforgettable journey to the south downs planetarium, accompanied by mr Hudson and miss gilbert.the trip proved to be a resounding success, igniting a passion for astronomy and space exploration in our young learners. the day commenced with an immersive experience within the planetarium's magnificent dome.as the lights dimmed, the students were transported to the vast expanse of the night sky, projected with breath taking clarity onto the curved ceiling. this captivating presentation offered a comprehensive tour of constellations, planets, and the intricate workings of our solar system. gasps of wonder filled the room as students witnessed the sheer scale and beauty of the universe, a truly aweinspiring spectacle and undoubtedly, a highlight of the day.

Following this celestial journey, the students delved into the exciting realm of current space exploration, specifically focusing on the artemis program.this segment of the visit provided an insightful look into the ambitious plans to return humans to the moon, fostering a sense of anticipation for future scientific advancements. students learned about the complex engineering and scientific challenges involved, sparking curiosity and encouraging them to consider the possibilities of a future in space exploration.

the afternoon culminated in a handson experience with meteorites, offering a tangible connection to the cosmos. students were given the extraordinary opportunity to hold these ancient rocks, remnants of celestial bodies that have travelled vast distances through space. the sheer weight and texture of these extra-terrestrial objects sparked a flurry of questions and discussions, bringing the wonders of space closer to home. adding to the exhilaration, students were also granted the rare privilege of close encounters with moon and mars rock. the south downs planetarium trip was a resounding success, providing our year 7 students with a unique and enriching educational experience. the day not only expanded their knowledge of astronomy and space but also fostered a sense of wonder and curiosity about the universe.

Havant Thicket Reservoir Student Ambassador Programme recently two of our students joined other likeminded students to represent Havant academy at the Havant reservoir ambassador programme. portsmouth water are keen to involve local students and young people in the project and to contribute key suggestions towards the evolution of the reservoir. the ambassadors will play a key role in sharing their own experiences in their schools via assemblies, presentations and the school newsletter. there will be an opportunity for the ambassadors to represent Havant academy at the main stakeholder meeting which includes councillors, members of HBc and portsmouth water executives.

Monday 23rd June - 1845 for1930 ‘saving ‘charlie november’ – the Historic Britten-norman islander – g-avcn’ presented by mr. Bob wealthy who will give an illustrated account of the project to save the Britten-norman islander aircraft ‘charlie november’ g-avcn and return it to the isle of wight where it was built as the third Bn-2 islander aircraft. it was constructed and delivered to glos air in 1967 – and is the oldest of the type still surviving. saving ‘charlie november’ began in late 1999, with g-avcn being dismantled and shipped back to Bembridge in 2000. restoration of this islander

aircraft took 23 years and the landmark completion stages will be explained by Bob, who will also cover the origins of the Britten-norman company and the Bn-2 islander’s operational history.

From pre school to the pensioners, members of the whole family were able to enjoy their visit to the purbrook Horticultural society annual spring show held at the deverell Hall. the Hall was filled with beautiful spring Blooms which along with their heady perfume provided a great backdrop to sit and chat over a slice of home made cake and a cuppa. many were amazed at the number and quality of daffodils on display, taking note of ones to perhaps purchase for next year. Following the welcome refreshments many purchased plants and hand crafted items then had a go at the raffle. Having applauded the worthy

8 May - From 1100am free events and a static display of military vehicles and equipment will take place across the car parks of the Ferry Boat inn and Johns café. commencing at 1800hrs the denmead Brass Band will perform a programme of music including the full ceremony of sunset and lowering of flags followed by music from the Last night of the proms as Hayling’s beacon is lit, together with a pyrotechnic display. the Hayling young stars will perform songs from Joseph and the amazing technicolour dreamcoat. the army and raF cadets will give a drill display and Hms excellent cadets will provide a Boer war field gun run. during the bands break the warner’s Lakeside entertainments team will perform a programme of celebratory music and song and lead youngsters in the sailors Hornpipe. prior to the sunset ceremony a short

remembrance ceremony will be held by Father mark, a former royal marine pastor, with a wreath being laid in the harbour by the Langstone Harbour master.

Haying military veterans will participate as will the royal British Legion, the Hayling army cadets 3rd platoon, raF air cadets 2327 (Havant) squadron, singing group timeless will perform music and songs from wwi. due to the limitation on parking the public are advised to park in the council car parks at Beachlands where the city of portsmouth preserved transport depot will provide the former double decker Hayling Ferry bus to transport from outside the Beachlands council office to the ferry and back from 1800 until 2130. the public are invited to bring folding chairs for use in the ferry boat car park.

Q. i was fascinated to read that my lovely circular wheels were, in fact, made up of lots of triangles. is the rest of my bike made of triangles, too? a . i’m glad that you found the reply interesting, and in answer to your question, yes, there are many triangles in the bike construction. in fact the traditional cycle frame is known as a ‘double triangle’ construction. the first and most obvious triangle is the one formed by the tube that runs from under the saddle across to just below the handlebars called the “crossbar” then down to the junction (bottom bracket) by the pedal crank “the down tube” and then the one that runs up to the saddle again “the seat tube”.

Behind that triangle is the one that runs from the bottom bracket back to the middle of the back wheel, it’s axle, and from there up to the saddle again. when you look at it closely you will see that the bottom of this triangle, called the chain stay because it keeps the wheel in the right place to keep the

if you struggle with tiredness, brain fog, aching joints, constant sure throats, bouts of nausea, sinus issues, swollen lymph glands and headaches the chances are you have a sluggish lymphatic system. unlike the heart, the lymphatic system needs a little more help from you to keep it functioning properly. it’s job, simplified, is to carry waste out of the body and keep the blood clean. if this does not happen we can get a lot of the symptoms mentioned above and they are all warning signs that the body needs a bit of extra help. going

from spring to summer is the perfect time to gently cleanse the body and move stagnation. if the body gets stuck, that’s when the disease process may begin. there are simple steps you can put into place to get back into balance.

1. drink more water- add cucumber, lemons, limes and berries to your jug of water to infuse vitamins and alkalising goodness as this helps to neutralise toxins and push them out the body.

2. add algae foods to your diet such as chlorella. Just a teaspoon per day in water can help to remove heavy metals and toxins out the blood. it also helps cleanse the liver and give an array of minerals too to boost your energy.

3. eat more melons and berries. going on a higher fruit diet helps to cleanse easier especially when they are high

4. ditch the processed foods. anything that contains additives and preservatives is toxic to your body.

spring has now sprung, and many will be bringing their classic cars out after their winter hibernation. although how you store your car over the winter months is hugely important and can significantly reduce the work required when getting it back on the road, there are still a few essential checks to carry out before setting off this spring. this is particularly crucial if you won’t be having the car checked over by a specialist or getting an mot before driving. the first step is to ensure your battery is fully charged before attempting to start the car. this is

especially vital if you haven’t kept it topped up over the winter months. that first start-up can put a significant strain on your battery, and if it’s already low, it could be the final straw. while the battery is charging, you can check your fluid levels and other components. inspect your oil, coolant, and, most importantly, brake fluid levels. if any are low, try to identify potential leaks before topping up—this is particularly critical for braking performance. on that note, it’s advisable to give the brake pedal a firm pump to check for any leaks. next, examine your hoses, seals, and other rubber components to ensure none are excessively perished or split.

Finally, give your tyres a thorough inspection. ensure they are inflated to the correct pressure, have good tread across the entire surface, and aren’t perished or cracked. tyres are often overlooked, yet they are the only thing connecting you to the road. once these checks are complete and your battery is charged, switch on the ignition and allow the fuel system to prime. check for any fuel leaks, then go through the rest of your electrical systems, paying particular attention to brake lights and indicators. now it’s time to start the car. with the vehicle

Cee Cee plastic waste recycling point cee cee is an accessible plastic waste recycling sculpture point, made out of recycled metals, moulded into the shape of the letter "c" - for chaos - and will give our service users the platform to make a positive difference in a community setting. any waste deposited will be maintained and emptied by chaos, then taken to our community Hub in market parade, deep cleaned and then put towards our plastic craft activities, to create simple but effective goods. cee cee is the result of conversations we had with our weekly litter picking group, and our friends at the Final straw Foundation. wanting to see what could be done to tackle the issue of plastic waste in the community, we eventually landed on developing something permanent - similar to the Final straw's Big Fish sculptures but with a twist. whilst the previous Big Fish's are absolutely brilliant works of art, alongside functionally recycling points, we felt as creating chaos, a charity focused on supporting adults with disabilities and additional needs, that sculptures of this design didn't reflect what we do, and instead cee cee - for creating chaos - was born. to create cee cee we gratefully accepted donations from the one stop community Fund (£1000), Baily thomas

charitable trust (£3500), Havant Borough council's waste prevention grant (£500), £500 from Lewmar, and a £200 from portsmouth Freemasons. the designers of the Big Fish sculptures, sailboat deliveries, helped in bringing cee cee to life, and over the course of a twelve week period, impressively created, transported, and then placed the sculpture in Havant park.

Hello, my name is chekov and i am one of the resident cats at the cat & rabbit rescue centre. in my article this time i want to tell you about a lovely female cat who arrived at the centre in February after her owners were moving house and couldn’t take her. Her name is camisole, and she arrived with her best friend cafton. sadly, it was obvious when she arrived that she was lame on one of her back legs. after checks with our vet, she was diagnosed with a luxating patella, which means her kneecap is slipping out of place.

camisole's condition is a grade 3/4, which is quite bad, meaning she will need a complicated surgery. as the operation is so in-depth and difficult, she has to go to a specialist vet, and this is going to cost the rescue around £2800. my staff have been sharing her story on social media, and the amazing supporters of crrc have already raised £1700 towards the surgery!

Her kneecap sadly wasn't her only health concern, and she has already been treated for ulcers in her eyes, a grade 2 heart murmur, x-rays, and a dental exam at the vet. the operation she is having will

include having the ligament cut off the bone and re-positioned to stop her kneecap from slipping. my staff do not want to consider removing her leg because it is often the case in cats with this condition that they can get it in another leg. camisole is booked to have her operation very soon, and i am keeping all my paws crossed that it will be successful. thank you so much to everyone who has supported her surgery, it is with thanks to you that she can look forward to finding a forever home soon. see you next time. Pet of this edition La roux Let us introduce you to a very pretty female cat called La roux. La roux is 5 years old. sadly, this is her second time at the rescue after recently being returned due to a change in her behaviour. La roux is a sweet girl who enjoys having a fuss made of her, but she has been known to be a little unpredictable at times. at the centre she is mostly a lovely, confident girl, but her new owners need to be aware that she can be a little naughty occasionally. Autism Hampshire Acceptance Week individuals, families, workplaces, and local businesses came together to support autistic people, understanding, and acceptance, events included an art exhibition and auction in Fareham, alongside a countywide wear purple for autism acceptance initiative on world autism awareness day. thanks to generous donations from local artists and the support of café Lamma’z, the art auction & exhibition was a huge success, raising funds and awareness. at the event, cheryl claxton, Head of community services at autism Hampshire, highlighted the importance

SLIMMING SUCCeSS andy decided that he needed to think about his own mortally after sadly losing his brother due to serious illness at the same age as himself. it made andy think about his own health and the lifestyle choices he was making. so, he decided to see his doctor for a general mot health check, as he knew that he needed to do something about his weight. andy said: “i remember attending that appointment and discovering that i had high blood pressure and would need to be on 4 tablets daily to manage it, and being told that being overweight was a major factor and how it would benefit me if i lost weight. it was hard to hear.”

Feeling disappointed in himself that he had let himself get into this position and for his weight to have spiralled and guilty that he was

taking a risk to his own health and life when his brother had no choice he realised that he did have a choice. the doctor offered him a 12week course for slimming world. this was working so well not just for myself but also for my partner Lisa who had told me that when she was a member before she had only lost 3 lbs but with support she is now over 4 stone lighter in the same period of time and has gone from a size 20 to a size 14. i have seen her confidence grow and just like my weight i have seen my bank balance shrink as it's costing me a fortune in new clothes. in just over 7 months i lost 6½ stone and am now at my dream target weight and will continue to attend my group to help me maintain my weight and support other members to get to their target weights.”
