Osceola County’s ‘Before the Storm’ Event Prepares Residents for 2024 Hurricane Season

On Saturday, the Osceola County Office of Emergency Management, led by director Bill Litton, hosted its annual “Before the Storm” event at the Kissimmee Civic Center aimed at educating and preparing Osceola County residents for the upcoming Atlantic hurricane season which runs from June 1 to November 1. The event took place ahead of National Hurricane Preparedness Week, which happens annually from May 5-11.

In collaboration with the Osceola County Office of Emergency Management, first responders including the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, Osceola County Fire Rescue, Kissimmee Police and Fire Department, St. Cloud Police and Fire Department, along with the National Weather Service, Florida Forest Service, WESH News’ Meteorology team, Kissimmee Utility Authority, St. Cloud’s Flood Management, and the Red Cross, supplied hurricane preparedness information to the community.

FWC releases 60 acres of of easements at Split Oak Forest for Osceola Parkway Extension, receives 1550 acres of conservation land

At this week’s Commission Meeting in Daytona Beach, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Commissioners voted 6-1 in favor of an agreement with the Central Florida Expressway Authority and Osceola County to release 60 acres of Split Oak Forest Wildlife and Environmental Area’s conservation easements in exchange for 1,550 acres of abutting conservation land, part of a total package estimated at $66 million. The decision makes it possible for CFX to construct the Osceola Parkway Extension, part of a regional expressway that would connect State Road 417 near Boggy Creek in Orange County to Cyrils Drive in Osceola County.

Osceola County Fire Rescue & EMS Hosts Career Signing Day for 20 High School Graduates

Twenty high school graduates participated in a “career signing day” ceremony with Osceola County Fire Rescue & EMS, formalizing their enrollment as the department’s first-ever class of full-time, non-certified firefighter candidates known as Fire Cadets.

Each candidate, joined by their family, had the opportunity to “sign” with Osceola County in a similar fashion to studentathlete signings; donning an official Osceola County Fire Rescue & EMS hat, and posing for a photo with Fire Chief Larry Collier. This program is one of several avenues the department is exploring to increase recruitment and retention within the department, especially among candidates from the local Osceola County community.

The City of St. Cloud is inviting the community to attend a viewing of its 5-Year Strategic Plan draft that will help shape the city’s operations and budgets for the next five years. The community helped create this plan by giving feedback, attending meetings, and creating a graphic vision for the future, and the city is now prepared to share the draft results.

Regional Track Showdown Wednesday in Osceola County: State Championships Just One Leap Away

A bevy of Osceola County athletes will attempt to qualify for the 2024 FHSAA State Track Championships this coming Wednesday as regional track championships are held around the region. In order to automatically qualify for regionals, athletes had to finish in the top four at district meets held this past week. In addition, the top eight other times and distances among non-automatic qualifiers across the state reached regionals via an at-large bid.

At four different district championships held last week, Osceola saw its eight public schools automatically advance 74 different athletes to regionals – including 18 individual district champions and two champion relay teams. Gateway, which saw its boys team win the 3A, District 8 Team Championship, and Harmony led the way with 16 athletes from each school qualifying for regionals in individual events.

Valencia College Collaborates with Osceola and Orange Districts for Elementary Teacher Apprenticeships and Path to Teaching Degree

Officials from Valencia College and Orange and Osceola County schools have unveiled the details of a new apprenticeship program for college students who want to become teachers. Announced at the Valencia’s West Campus, the new apprenticeships will allow students to work in schools as classroom paraprofessionals while earning their bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Valencia College.

The program is set to start in 2025 –though students who have earned an Associate in Arts degree can begin working as paraprofessionals in fall 2024. They’ll begin earning credit for their work experience starting in 2025, officials said.

‘Operation Best Foot Forward’ Returns to Osceola County to Promote Pedestrian Safety Around Central Florida’s Parks & Trails

Recognizing that less than 50% of Central Florida drivers are yielding to pedestrians near parks and trails, the Best Foot Forward for Pedestrian Safety program will be kicking off its quarterly pedestrian safety enforcement beginning April 30, dubbed Operation Best Foot Forward, to bring awareness and education to drivers to keep pedestrians safe near parks and trail crossings in Central Florida.

Law enforcement agencies in and around Osceola County will be conducting a two-week high-visibility crosswalk enforcement from Tuesday, April 30 to Friday, May 10 as part of FDOT’s Target Zero initiative to reduce traffic-related serious injuries and deaths to zero.

Osceola County Detectives Arrest Suspect in FedEx Package Thefts

Detectives in Osceola County have resolved a string of FedEx package thefts with the arrest of 26-year-old Abel Bismarck Valdez-Feliz. After a series of thefts throughout April, involving a recurring suspect and vehicle, authorities employed multiple investigative techniques to pinpoint Valdez-Feliz as the prime suspect.

On a recent Tuesday, deputies apprehended Valdez-Feliz and executed a search warrant at his residence. They discovered numerous items of evidence confirming his involvement in the package thefts. During an interview, Valdez-Feliz confessed to the crimes, leading to his arrest and charges, including two counts of burglary and two counts of third-degree grand theft.

UCF Knight Javon Baker’s NFL Dream Realized: Drafted by the New England Patriots after Stellar Season

After an impressive senior season at UCF, Javon Baker achieved his childhood dream when he was drafted by the New England Patriots as the 110th overall pick in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. The event, held in Detroit, Michigan, marked a significant milestone in Baker’s football career.

After leading the Big 12 Conference in receiving yards with 1,139, Baker was tabbed a first-team selection on the All-Big 12 team chosen by league coaches. That mark also ranked 16th in the NCAA.

The Atlanta native finished the season ranked second in the nation in yards per catch with 21.9, leading the conference. Baker hauled in 52 passes, making several highlight reel catches, and scored seven touchdowns.

St. Cloud Seeks Public Input During May 7 Community Meeting to Help for Plan Future Housing and Development Priorities

The City of St. Cloud will hold a community meeting to gather public input on its Consolidated Plan for FY 2024-2029 for the use of Community Development Block Grant.

(CDBG) funding. This 5-year plan will help the city identify housing and community development priorities that align with annual CDBG funding requirements.

CDBG funds are provided through Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

The community meeting will be held at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7, in the Community Development Conference Room, located on the first floor of City Hall, 1300 9th St. More information, including a video, is available on the City website. The Osceola County School for the Arts Jazz Band

Swings Back to the Essentially Ellington Jazz Competition in New York Lookin to Three-Peat

The top 15 high school-aged jazz bands from across the country will converge at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s home for the 29th annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival May 9-11. One of those jazz bands will once again be from the Osceola County School for the Arts, under the direction of Jason Anderson.

OCSA’s Jazz Band A pulled off a back to back repeat last year in New York, and is hoping to pull off a ‘three-peat’ next week when they face 14 other excellent jazz bands from around the country.

The Students will spend three days immersed in workshops, jam sessions, rehearsals, and performances, and compete for top honors in, the nation’s premier jazz education event.

Jazz at Lincoln Center marks the 125th birthday of Duke Ellington (April 29, 1899 – May 24, 1974) with a festival of events at Frederick P. Rose Hall, the organization’s home, in New York, NY.

Harmony Longhorns Win District Championship over Osceola in Boys Baseball, Lady Kowboys Take District Crown in Softball

Evan Christ pitched five innings of twohit ball and Isaiah Santiago hit a towering three-run home run in the first inning, as Harmony cruised to a 8-0 win over Osceola to claim the Class 7A, District 9 Championship on Thursday night.

The Longhorns (16-11), who also won the Orange Belt Conference Championship this year, will now wait to see who they will face in a Region 2 quarterfinal game on Tuesday.

Christ, who went to 5-1 on the season and lowered his ERA 2.03, was dominant. He struck out nine and allowed just two walks. Only Chris Palmi (double) and Riley Carpenter (single) reached via hit for the Kowboys—who fell to 11-12 on the season.

District Tournaments Kick Off Tonight in Osceola County High School Baseball, Softball and Boys’ Volleyball

It’s tournament time!

All eight Osceola County public schools will be in action this week in baseball, softball and boys’ volleyball as they seek district championships and the automatic bids to regionals that go with them.

All three sports have the same schedule, with district quarterfinals slated for Monday, semifinals on Tuesday and championship games on Thursday. Although a district championship comes with an automatic regional bid, eight at-large bids for the eight highest ranked non-ranked district winners in each region are also available.

Whether your child is experiencing their first ear infection or has been suffering from chronic ear infections for years, it’s vital to understand their causes and symptoms. Why? Untreated ear infections not only can lead to greater and prolonged pain, but also potential hearing loss.

Armed with accurate medical information, parents can take steps to prevent their infants and children from developing ear infections and treat them when they do. Here’s what you need to know about kids and this common condition.

CAUSES OF EAR INFECTIONS

Children are far more susceptible to ear infections than adults due to basic anatomy. Unlike grown-ups, children have eustachian tubes (the narrow tubes that connect the back of the nose to the middle ear) that are shorter, narrower and positioned horizontally to the ear. Ear infections occur when this tiny tube swells. A swollen eustachian tube can trap fluid in the middle ear. The middle ear then fills with infected fluid—or pus— that pushes against the eardrum, causing inflammation and pain.

Often an ear infection is preceded by a respiratory infection or allergies. Whatever the cause, this initial swelling occurs when bacteria and/or viruses enter the sensitive space of your child’s middle ear.
