St. Cloud City Council Approves Settlement with Cathcart Construction for Downtown Renovation Repairs

St. Cloud’s City Council voted 3-2 to accept a mediated settlement agreement with Cathcart Construction over the quality of the Downtown Phase 2 renovation project. The vote clears the path for work to begin quickly to repair the project.

Under terms of the agreement, the City will withhold $200,000 of the $526,899.76 it had not paid Cathcart for the project, which included replacement of underground utilities, brick paver streets, new sidewalks, and decorative landscaping and lighting. The mediated settlement also requires Cathcart to remove from its website and marketing materials all references or pictures of Phase 1 or Phase 2 of the Downtown Revitalization project.

The City will use the $200,000 it is withholding from Cathcart, plus project contingency funds, to pay for removing the bricks on 10th Street and replacing them with asphalt, at an estimated cost of $241,800. Originally, the City paid $265,980 to install the bricks on 10th Street.

“The City’s focus is on getting repairs done quickly, and minimizing construction impacts to businesses,” said City Manager Veronica Miller. “We plan to hire a new contractor quickly to get started on removing the bricks on 10th Street and replacing them with asphalt.”

May is National Stroke Awareness month. Every 40 seconds, someone in the United States has a stroke. Every four minutes, someone dies of a stroke. Strokes are a leading cause of death and disability for Americans, but early detection can greatly reduce your risk of dying or suffering long-term effects.

The sooner a stroke is recognized and treated, the better the outcome is likely to be. When every second counts, understanding the different types of stroke and their signs and symptoms just might save your life.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF STROKES

A stroke happens when blood flow to the brain is interrupted, preventing brain cells from getting the oxygen and nutrients they need and causing these cells to die. Strokes are divided into two main types according to how they disrupt blood flow to brain cells.

Law: Which vehicles are more likely to be involved in serious or fatal accidents?

Sadly, serious and fatal accidents take place on a daily basis in Central Florida. These crashes can happen in a number of ways and can be caused by not following traffic laws, inexperience, intoxication, distracted driving, fatigue, and medical issues.

Statistics show that fatal car accidents can often occur based on the type of vehicle. You may think that sports cars are most likely to be in crashes due to their speed and performance. However, according to the NHTSA, it’s the everyday cars, trucks, and SUVs on the roadways that are involved more frequently in serious or even deadly accidents, with sedans and pickup trucks accounting for more than three-quarters of fatal accidents. If you drive out on the roadways, here’s what you need to know about which vehicles have been involved in many of the crashes.

Orlando Health: How to Avoid Common — and Painful — Ear Infections HEALTH

Ear infections are one of the most common medical conditions among young children. But that doesn’t mean they should be ignored. Whether your child is experiencing their first ear infection or has been suffering from chronic ear infections for years, it’s vital to understand their causes and symptoms. Why? Untreated ear infections not only can lead to greater and prolonged pain, but also potential hearing loss.

Armed with accurate medical information, parents can take steps to prevent their infants and children from developing ear infections and treat them when they do. Here’s what you need to know about kids and this common condition.

CAUSES OF EAR INFECTIONS

Children are far more susceptible to ear infections than adults due to basic anatomy. Unlike grown-ups, children have eustachian tubes (the narrow tubes that connect the back of the nose to the middle ear) that are shorter, narrower and positioned horizontally to the ear. Ear infections occur when this tiny tube swells. A swollen eustachian tube can trap fluid in the middle ear. The middle ear then fills with infected fluid—or pus— that pushes against the eardrum, causing inflammation and pain.

Often an ear infection is preceded by a respiratory infection or allergies. Whatever the cause, this initial swelling occurs when bacteria and/or viruses enter the sensitive space of your child’s middle ear.
