Saluting Sacrifice: Osceola County Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony

Honors Fallen Officers

On Wednesday, members of Osceola County’s four law enforcement agencies— the St. Cloud Police Department, Kissimmee Police Department, Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, and Osceola County Department of Corrections—gathered for their annual ceremony to honor officers who have passed away, both in the line of duty and otherwise. This solemn event serves as a moment of reflection and appreciation for the sacrifices made by these heroes, reaffirming the community’s commitment to remember and honor their service.

Held inside the Kissimmee Civic Center due to inclement weather, the memorial ceremony coincided with Peace Officer Memorial Day on May 15th and National Police Week, both established by President John F. Kennedy in 1962. The ceremony emphasized the unity among different law enforcement agencies as they stood together to remember their fallen comrades.

The annual Osceola County Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony is deeply significant for both the community and law enforcement agencies. It brings together officers from various departments and offers a platform for the families of fallen officers to receive support from a compassionate Osceola County community.

Weightlifting Takes Center Stage at OBC Honors Dinner: St. Cloud’s Mikey Ziss and Ashley Aun Shine as County Athletes of the Year

Mainstream high school sports like football, basketball, baseball, track and softball may capture the majority of attention in Osceola County, but not on Wednesday night. The sport of weightlifting grabbed the headlines when St. Cloud’s Mikey Ziss and Ashley Aun were named Orange Belt Conference Male and Female Athletes of the Year at Wednesday night’s OBC Honors Dinner at Silver Spurs Arena.

“It’s really hard to explain what this means to me,” long-time coach Cory Aun said. “We are a somewhat obscure in that many people don’t even know weightlifting is a varsity sport in Florida schools. But is also an activity that practically every other athlete in every sport uses to get better. It is also a sport with no real off-season. Our athletes have to train six days a week, every week of the year. People see the success of these kids in meets, without realizing how many hours they have to put in to be successful. I am so happy to see our sport recognized and I am so proud that Ashley and Mikey are being recognized tonight.”

Orlando Health: Why Pneumonia Vaccine Is as Important as Flu Shot

If you’ve kept up with your annual flu shot and COVID vaccines, well done! There’s another crucial step you can take to protect yourself from severe illness: getting vaccinated against pneumonia. Pneumonia, a lung infection, is one of the top causes of adult hospitalizations in the United States. While it poses a particular risk to very young children and adults over 65, it claims nearly 50,000 lives annually across the nation. Make sure you’re protected.

For older people who are relatively healthy, the beauty of the pneumonia vaccine is that — unlike the annual influenza vaccine — you may only need to get the shot just once in your lifetime to significantly reduce your chances of getting very ill or dying from pneumonia.

Law: Which vehicles are more likely to be involved in serious or fatal accidents?

Sadly, serious and fatal accidents take place on a daily basis in Central Florida. These crashes can happen in a number of ways and can be caused by not following traffic laws, inexperience, intoxication, distracted driving, fatigue, and medical issues.

Statistics show that fatal car accidents can often occur based on the type of vehicle. You may think that sports cars are most likely to be in crashes due to their speed and performance. However, according to the NHTSA, it’s the everyday cars, trucks, and SUVs on the roadways that are involved more frequently in serious or even deadly accidents, with sedans and pickup trucks accounting for more than three-quarters of fatal accidents. If you drive out on the roadways, here’s what you need to know about which vehicles have been involved in many of the crashes.

Orlando Health: Prevent Dog-Walking Injuries with These Tips HEALTH

Taking your dog on regular walks is good for your pooch – and for you, too. Walking doesn’t only provide “man’s best friend” some outdoor time, it also decreases the risk for obesity, high blood pressure and heart-related conditions for both of you.

But it’s not uncommon to suffer an injury while being out and about with your furry friend. A study by JAMA Surgery revealed that dog-walking increases the risk of fractures in older American adults.

Being prepared and following a few safety suggestions before heading outside can decrease these risks.

WHAT CAN GO WRONG?

Dogs are easily distracted. When something catches your dog’s attention and they make a break for it, you could end up getting hurt.

From the way you grip a leash to the shoes you wear, you could seriously injure yourself if you aren’t prepared. Some common dog-walking injuries include:

• Wrist, hip, elbow and finger fractures, including cracked or broken bones

• Rotator cuff tears, which affect the tissues that connect muscle to bone in the shoulder

• Proximal humerus fracture, or injury of the humerus bone in the shoulder joint TIPS FOR SAFER DOG WALKING

Doctors see patients who fall because of being dragged by their distracted dog and then suffer fractures or sprains when they try to break their fall with their hands. A few tips can help.

Never wrap your leash around your wrist or fingers. If your dog suddenly moves at a faster speed, you’ll struggle to detach yourself. This could also result in a bad fall or a finger or wrist sprain.
