AHOY ME HEARTIES! 800 excited young pirates from infant and primary schools across the city gathered at the Kings Theatre just before half term for an interactive pirate show. The children all joined in very enthusiastically and, what with the singing, the dancing, the rowing, the treasure hunting, the rhythms, the band and the Music, it was a morning to remember. _______________________________ VERISONA LAW We are very grateful to Verisona Law for their generous financial support for Time-scape and the Friends of Portsmouth Music Hub. The firm is also highly regarded for its specialist private client services. _______________________________ BIG SCREEN COMPETITION This great competition is for schools taking part in the Ten Pieces project and composing music linked to the Ten Pieces: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01vs08w All you have to do is film your children's 'Ten Pieces' composition on a high resolution camera and submit an mpeg to portsmouthmusichub@portsmouthcc.gov.uk by May 22nd. The Ten pieces judging panel will review all entries and the three top entries will be shown on the Big Screen on June 5th as part of the Ten Pieces Celebration Day.

As part of MFY’s Birmingham based National Festival in July, there will be a day-long New Music Stage event presenting selected performances of new music by young composers, performed by young people. The programme is open to young composers who are aged between 12 and 21 years old. Applications can be made by young composers themselves, or by music organisations representing young composers: The deadline for entries is Friday 27th March. Vocal Ensembles Spring Concert
PORTSMOUTH PHILHARMONIA Portsmouth Philharmonia is looking for an enthusiastic percussionist/timpanist and trumpet, trombone and viola players available to play on a regular basis. The local community orchestra rehearses every Sunday evening 7.00 to 9.00pm at the Church of the Resurrection in Drayton. If you are interested in joining a nice group of people who enjoy making music together and performing three concerts a year for charity please contact the Music Hub who can pass on your details. _______________________________ CLUSTER CHOIRS We are able to fund children's choirs for three clusters in the city for the next financial year, starting at the beginning of the Summer Term. The cluster would need to provide a free venue and one adult to help with the children (no singing expertise required). If your cluster is interested, please submit a bid by email to Sue Beckett at the Music Hub by March 2nd, identifying the target age of the cluster choir, the venue and the ideal day and time. We will assess the bids and let you know by March 6th and liaise with the successful cluster to put a choir in place for the Summer Term. _______________________________ SEA SONG SLAM National Museum of the Royal Navy on the 7th March will have a wide range of community choirs and groups singing songs inspired by the sea competing against each other to be crowned Sea Song Slam Champion 2015! From this event they hope to form their first community choir which will come together on 11th April in a separate event for the local community.

11th April, 7.30pm MUSIC REVOLUTION The Music Revolution is a newly formed Music Club at Portsmouth Guildhall in partnership with the SoCo Music Project. The Music Club features free drop-in sessions of Rock/Pop, Music Tech, and Song writing with different specialist add-on sessions each week in Urban, DJ and Afro-beat. These sessions take place every Saturday at Portsmouth Guildhall, from 10am – 2pm for 11 – 18 year olds. For more information, or to register an interest, please contact Hayley Reay or Marie Negus __________________ BOURNEMOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA COMPOSITION WORKSHOP The BSO is offering a free workshop to talented young composers aged 16-21 on Saturday 28th February. It will be an afternoon dedicated to composing contemporary music for orchestras and ensembles. The ensemble workshops are led by one of today’s most prolific composers, Colin Matthews. Instrumental workshops in strings, wind, percussion and harp with BSO musicians will also take place giving an insight into writing for their individual instrument. Places are limited to just 15 (allocated on a first-come-first-served basis). To book a place, please contact Chris Block, Participation Administrator at the BSO cblock@bsorchestra.co.uk __________________ PORTSMOUTH FESTIVITIES CALL OUT FOR DANCERS Age, ability, background and experience do not matter. What counts is enthusiasm. Rehearsing with the internationally-acclaimed Stopgap Dance Company, dancers will develop brand new choreography. Casting is happening now, with rehearsals currently scheduled to start in mid-March. Portsmouth Festivities are keen to hear from any groups with an interest in taking part. Watch the new film to find out more about the advocacy toolkit and the three things we can all do to make the case for public investment. _______________________________ OFSTED INSPECTIONS Ofsted's new report "Better Inspection for All" makes reference to music in Point 27: “The Don’t Stop the Music campaign encouraged many parents and others to respond to the consultation. As part of the campaign, those who responded to the consultation said that Ofsted should include a specific focus on music as part of Inspections and produce evidence of that in Inspection reports. They also said that no school should be judged good or outstanding if it is not at least good or outstanding in music. Ofsted cannot commit to focusing inspection disproportionately on an individual subject. However, we agree with the broader point that inspection must take account of whether schools offer a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum. Music is clearly an element of such a curriculum. Based on the responses and feedback overall we have decided that we will consider the breadth and balance of a provider’s curriculum under the effectiveness of leadership and management judgment.” _______________________________ GET CREATIVE Get Creative is a major celebration of the nation's arts, culture and creativity. Led by the BBC and What Next? in collaboration with a huge range of arts, cultural and voluntary organisations, it will be a year-long high profile campaign - potentially a tremendous springboard for the arts, for culture and for creativity. ARTS & CULTURE PASSPORT Don’t forget to continue collecting stamps for your Arts & Culture Passport. With five stages, students can become involved from any age. With so much going on, it is a great time to gather evidence of your involvement, not only with music, but in anything to do with arts and culture. That can include a trip to the theatre even to see a pantomime, museum visits, dance shows and photography - indeed anything creative or cultural. With only 5 stamps needed for Stage 1, you will be surprised just how quickly the stamps mount up. Remember that, if you take part in at least 20% of the events (so that means only one event for Stage 1), your certificate, signed by the Lord Mayor, will be at gold status. The evidence of your activities will normally be assessed by your school, so do ask if your school has registered for the Passport. Further information about the scheme can be found here on the Music Hub website. There are also some examples of completed portfolios so you can see what you need to do. Most of all, have fun!
