More than a third of the city's residents aged 16 – 64 would benefit from brushing up on their everyday maths skills to improve their numeracy.

Better numeracy helps with household budgeting, identifying the best deals at the supermarket, understanding interest rates, using timetables and many other things. For parents, this includes helping their children with maths and science homework.

Portsmouth is a key partner in the National Numeracy Challenge that was launched earlier this year on World Maths Day. The Challenge Online is an easy-to-use website designed to confidentially assess and improve everyday maths skills.

Mayfield School appoints new head of infants Mayfield School has appointed a new head of infants – Mrs Maria Gleed – in preparation for becoming an 'all-through' school for pupils aged 4 to 16 from September.

Mrs Gleed said: "I feel privileged and excited by the challenge of opening Portsmouth’s newest infant school provision and to being part of shaping the future of education for children in our area.

Music Hub award Portsmouth City Council's Portsmouth Music Hub has been recognised with a national award for its songbooks.

The Hub was given the award for Best Print Resource at the Music Teacher Awards for Excellence in London. The award recognised the Hub's songbooks: • Singathlon – songs about sport and sporting values • Sing Out Pompey! – a celebration of the city of Portsmouth through song • Choral Reef – songs about sea creatures • Circus-scape – songs about the circus

Sue Beckett (right), director of Portsmouth Music Hub, said: "The Hub has a very talented team of song writers and this award is a fantastic testament to their skills and commitment to children's singing.

"Thousands of children across the UK have performed songs from these songbooks and it is very exciting that the high quality of the songs has been recognised with this prestigious award."

The Portsmouth Music Hub's composition team has written over 80 original songs for young people in the city and these songs can be heard in classrooms across the UK.

Free hot school meals for all infants from September We're getting ready to dish up free hot school meals to all infant aged pupils (year R, 1 and 2) from September.

Letters have been sent via schools to all parents/carers who have children either starting school in September or who are currently in year R or year one so we can get an idea of how many pupils will be taking up the offer.

Keep teeth healthy Making sure your children's teeth are cared for will benefit them in later life as they will grow up with healthy teeth and gums.

To keep teeth healthy: • Avoid sugary or acidic food and drinks Food and drinks such as sweets, cakes, fizzy drinks, fruit juices and squashes can cause tooth decay.

These days, school dinners are almost certainly healthier than most packed lunches – and tastier, too!

We all know that eating a balanced diet is fundamental to the development of children's health and wellbeing and their ability to lead healthier, active lifestyles – and healthy pupils are more likely to be better learners.

• Brush twice a day using fluoride toothpaste Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel. Build brushing into your child's daily routine, in the morning and at bedtime.

Being a school governor School governors should be interested in education, aged 18 and over and be able to commit to about 10-15 hours per half term.

Every board of governors needs a mix of different backgrounds, skills and experience. community they live in should consider becoming a school governor. You have to be committed but you can make a real difference to your school and I'm one of those people who like to make a difference."

Julie Carter enjoys being a social worker. She meets lots of different people and helps struggling families get through their problems.

Julie worked in education for 16 years, but decided it was time to re-train and go into social work.

"I was working with children at risk of exclusion and I realised I could make more impact by working with the whole family," she says.

Three years later, armed with a social work degree from Chichester University, she joined our family support team.

She says: "The training at Portsmouth is very, very good and the support offered by the other social workers in the team has been amazing. The job is always interesting and challenging and there are so many opportunities to meet a wide variety of people and make a positive difference."

When you are a child I think it is nice to dream about the job you would like to do when you are older. I have been thinking about it for a long time and the profession I would like to work in when I am an adult is, I believe, the best job in the world.

My school and Victorians

I go to Goldsmith Infant School and I am in year two. I have been learning about Victorians and I was really interested in their lifestyle. The Victorians I have learnt about were called Queen Victoria, Florence Nightingale and Alexander Graham Bell.

As I am in the last year of primary school I am now looking at the qualifications I would need to do this job so I am working very hard in school at all my subjects.

I had a Victorian day where I had to dress up as a servant and also we had to make an iron. I saw how Victorians washed their clothes. First they got all the clothes and put it in the bucket and scrubbed off the stains. They used a big metal stick to squeeze all the water out of the clothes. It would take them a whole day for them to finish.

What would you like to do when you are older and what skills and qualifications will you need to achieve your goal?

It's fun learning how people used to live. I am ever so glad that my mummy and I have a washing machine!

Lending a hand A charity which supports deaf babies and pre-school children has benefited from the skills of 4D carpenter Mark Garner.

The Elizabeth Foundation is one of two charities that 4D have chosen to support throughout the Portsmouth Flood community during the disruption.

The Elizabeth Foundation had a new basement at its Portsmouth HQ, which created much-needed extra space fortnight. The firm also donated all the materials and Mark

charity which does such great work and whose fundraising is just amazing. The foundation is growing and growing as more children need its services. Now it has somewhere to put all its records and equipment, its seasonal toys and so on. It

Feature With the summer holidays just around the corner there will hopefully be plenty of time for fun in the sun, but it's important to be aware and protect your child during those long summer days.

With these easy steps you can make sure your child is protected from sunburn and heat related illness: 1. Use the right sunscreen Young skin is much more delicate and easily damaged by exposure to the sun. A sunscreen with a minimum of factor 15 should applied to areas that cannot be protected by clothing such as the face, ears, feet and backs of hands. Use products that are broadspectrum, which protect against harmful UVA and UVB rays.

2. Re-apply, re-apply, re-apply With all the fun of running around and swimming, sunscreen can easily be rubbed, sweated and washed off so remember to re-apply it regularly and again after swimming, even if the sunscreen is waterproof.

3. Stay out of the midday sun The sun is at its hottest between 11am and 3pm so try and play in the shade during those times. Babies under six months should be kept out of direct sunlight.

4. Cover up Children should be covered up as much as possible with loose, baggy clothing, hats and sunglasses.

5. Water, water everywhere It's important to stay hydrated all year round but during periods of hot weather it's even more important to make sure children drink plenty of fluids; water or no added sugar squash is best.

6. Be aware Look out for signs of heat exhaustion which include faintness, nausea and headaches. If a child starts to feel unwell get them to a cool place, removing any excess clothing and give them plenty to drink.

On 6 June 2014 it will be 70 years since D-Day took place, one of the most significant events in WWII. Portsmouth was one of the key strategic locations across the South coast where thousands of Allied troops left for the beaches of Normandy. The city is commemorating the actions of troops with a line-up of impressive events, including: 5 June Drumhead Ceremony, Royal Marines landing, Red Arrows display and Sunset Concert for Heroes

6 June Remembrance Service, military parade and live coverage of the Normandy Commemorations 7 and 8 June A weekend of entertainment and activities for all the family featuring music from the 1940s, arena displays and parades, military vehicle exhibitors and displays, lindy hop dancers, 1940s vintage market, archive and war film screenings, talks by local veterans, homefront displays, photographic exhibitions and street theatre performances.
