Fostering our teenagers Fostering a teenager is one of the most rewarding yet challenging roles you may ever take on.

that be working, starting their own businesses or even starting their own family.”

“We first got into fostering when managing a football team for vulnerable children.” Zhoura and her husband were initially approached by the council for their help with teenagers. “We had teenage children of our own at that point, so it made sense to foster that age group.”

To foster teenagers you need to be robust, caring, consistent and have a lot of energy. A good sense of humour will also help, but Aziz believes that the best foster carers are ones that offer unconditional care. “Showing all aspects of care at all times is what makes a good foster carer”, he says, “even when times are tough.”

Portsmouth foster carers Zhoura Blakeman and her husband Gary discovered this first hand when they began their foster care journey 12 years ago.

Aziz started his own personal training business, Az Fitness PT in 2017 which has grown rapidly over the past 2 years. “I’m so proud of what he’s achieved” Zhoura says, “he’s worked really hard for it.”

There is a particular demand for foster carers to help care for teenagers, with 71% of looked after children in Portsmouth aged 10 and over. “I love working with young people” says Zhoura “they have great personalities.”

If you think you could offer a caring home to a young person then please contact the Foster Portsmouth team on 023 9283 4701 or visit foster.portsmouth.gov.uk

Fostering teenagers is sometimes a bumpy ride, she admits, but all the young people who have been through their home still keep in touch, with Sunday family dinners being a crowded affair. Aziz, now 23 years old, lived with Zhoura for 8 years from age 11. At 19 he moved out to his own place but still visits regularly. “We still see each other once a fortnight” Aziz says, “either at home for family meals or on day outings.”

Zhoura admits that looking after teenagers isn’t always easy, but that the rewards far outweigh anything else. “I love watching them grow as people and seeing them thriving in society as adults, whether

We are also looking for supported lodging carers to support our young people as they prepare to move onto independent living. Could you provide a safe home and support to a young person aged 16-24? If you understand the issues facing young people today and want to help, please contact the team on 023 9283 4701. “The transition into adulthood can be hard for young people; it’s important that they have someone who is there for them” - Angie Thomas, Supported Lodgings Carer

Festive Fun Games Everyone likes lazing on the sofa at Christmas, watching telly and playing with their new gadgets. Especially kids! But the holidays can also be a great time to get children active – whatever the weather. Here are some ideas: Dance teacher - whack on the Christmas music and take it in turns to come up with moves.

Festive treasure hunt - combine a walk with an outdoor hunt collecting or spotting festive things. Charity clear out - sort through old stuff and take it to the charity shop for someone else to enjoy.

Or visit nhs.uk/change4life for lots of fun 10-minute games featuring some of your favourite Disney and Pixar characters.

Indoor tennis - Put that leftover wrapping paper to good use by scrunching it up and using it as a ball that you can hit back-andforth over the sofa.

Head off to your local adventure playground. Visit pycportsmouth.co.uk to find out what’s on.

Winter Cycling Don’t let the dark nights and cold days of winter deter you and your family from cycling. With a bit of preparation you can be out on your bike all year round. Cycling is great for your physical and mental health. Children who walk, cycle or scoot to school arrive relaxed, alert and ready to start the day. Try swapping some car journeys for cycling.

If your bike needs basic repairs or maintenance the council provides free weekly Bike Doctor sessions, every Wednesday in Commercial Road. For Bike Doctor information plus cycling advice, visit www.portsmouth.gov.uk/cycling.

Be bright, be seen!

Drivers can find it difficult to see cyclists in the dark so be bright and be seen. You need white lights for front and red for back lights, plus reflectors. Wear brightly-coloured, reflective clothing.

Try spoke lights, reflective stickers and hub lights to put some fun into the school run.

Cough, cough, engine off! When it’s cold outside and you’re waiting to pick up the kids, it’s tempting to run your car’s engine to stay warm. You can help to improve our air quality by switching off your engine when your vehicle is stationary. Breathing in petrol and diesel fumes can be harmful to children, so it’s important not to idle your engine near a school as vehicle emissions can affect children’s developing lungs.

False. There are other ways to defrost your windows - try: • • •

Rub a re-useable zip-lock bag half-filled with hot (not boiling) water over your windscreen. Slowly pour a small jug of warm water over the windscreen.

Mix 1/3 water with 2/3 rubbing alcohol (available from chemists) and spray onto your windscreen.

Find out more about air quality at myjourneyportsmouth.com/coughcough

If you switch the engine off when you park and keep the ignition on, the heater should stay warm for up to 30 minutes. I need to run my engine to defrost the windows.

Route 4 U People with reduced mobility can get help to travel and save money using Route4U.

WHAT COULD THEY BECOME?

BOOK FAMILY HOLIDAYS IN SCHOOL HOLIDAYS Consider the impact on your child if they miss school due to a family holiday in term time and have to catch up on the lessons they have missed.

If you book family holidays in term time your child is missing out on their lessons as well as all the other opportunities school provides - from being with friends to going on school trips, clubs and sport activities. Every year a small handful of parents are tempted to take a holiday during term time. The vast majority don’t 16 | Winter 2019 | Term Times

There is a direct link between attendance and attainment, so when the holiday adverts start to pop up on TV keep holidays to the school holiday period. Find out more about school attendance at www.portsmouth.gov.uk/attendance

Health advice

Fight the flu Flu can be a severe illness, especially for certain groups of people. Vaccination is the best protection we have against this unpredictable virus.

If you have children aged two and three, please take them to their GP for the vaccination.

All primary school children will be offered it at school by the school nurse this year.

All children receive the quick nasal spray vaccination and it’s free for these ages. Find out more at www.nhs.uk/staywell

Stay well this winter To reduce the risk of spreading flu, use tissues to trap germs when you cough or sneeze, wash your hands frequently with warm water and soap, and bin used tissues as quickly as possible. Catch it. Bin it. Kill it.

If you start to feel unwell, even if it is just a cough or cold, don’t wait until it gets more serious, get help from your pharmacist. The sooner you get advice the better.

If you do need help over the holiday period when your GP surgery or pharmacy is closed, call NHS 111 or visit www.nhs.uk.

Health advice

Coping with your baby crying A baby’s cry can be upsetting and frustrating, but it is normal and it will stop. Babies may start to cry more at about 2 to 5 weeks of age, hitting a peak at 6 to 8 weeks. Every baby is different but, after about 8 weeks, babies start to cry less and less each week.

There’s a new programme called ICON to help parents cope with a baby crying. It stands for:

Infant crying is normal and it will stop! Babies start to cry more frequently from around 2 weeks of age.

Comfort methods can sometimes soothe the baby and the crying will stop. Is the baby hungry, tired or in need of a nappy change?

It’s okay to walk away if you have checked the baby is safe and the crying is getting to you. After a few minutes when you are feeling calm, go back and check on the baby.

Taking action to reduce rubbish It’s been a busy year on the rubbish and recycling front. Since wheelie bins were delivered to more than 50,000 households in the city, recycling has increased by a whopping 30 tonnes a month.

We’re also a few months into the food waste trial being run in over 8,000 homes. At the time of writing, an extra 82 tonnes of food waste has been recycled - helping reduce the carbon footprint of the city! Find out more about what you can and can’t recycle at www.portsmouth.gov.uk/recycling or cut out and keep the reminder below.
