INSPIRING PROFESSORS
SOFIYA SYNCHYCH ’24, psychology major from Troy, Mich.
Sofiya, who was born in Ukraine, knows what trauma looks like and decided to study psychology so she could help others experiencing it. “I wanted to understand how people tick.”
With guidance and inspiration from two of her professors, Dr. Greg Page and Jeremy Callinan, Sofiya created a virtual reality experience to help soothe the anxiety of people suffering
from post-traumatic stress disorder.
She developed an app to simulate snorkeling, which leads users through meditative activities, including breathing exercises, to help users release tension. Sofiya also presented her project, “Mindfulness in Virtual Reality,” at Pitt-Bradford’s annual Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Day.

A DEGREE FORGED IN EXCELLENCE
Mike Griffin ’24 a nursing major from Claymont, Del., decided to study nursing at Pitt-Bradford because he wanted to make a difference.
“I chose nursing after hearing the impact you can have not only on your patient’s life but their families as well.”
With the inspiration and support he received from his professors, Mike flourished in the program. He did so well that he received the ASN Clinical Excellence Award in 2024, which recognizes nursing students who exemplify the ideals and goals of nursing.
“Nursing school can feel intense, but having people there with whom you can share laughs, tears and disagreements is what makes the experience. You grow together and gain family and lifelong friends, with shared experiences like no other.”
After graduating with his nursing degree, Mike accepted a nursing position at Christiana Hospital in Wilmington, Del.
“You grow together and gain family and lifelong friends.”
