A New View of Campus I AM WRITING THIS DURING THE THIRD WEEK OF OCTOBER, AND, as is the case across our region, here in Bradford the leaves are either green or gone. Even though we’ve been missing the typical autumn color in the hills, it has been a really great fall at Pitt-Bradford.

For me, a highlight thus far was Alumni and Family Weekend. We had perfect fall weather and a great turnout of alumni. I loved meeting our alumni and talking to them about their time at Pitt-Bradford and their lives since.

In addition to those many conversations, two moments really stand out for me. The first was the lighting of the quad, spectacularly beautiful in its own right, but made extra special this year with the announcement of the successful campaign for the Dean Evans Legacy Fund. This scholarship, named for longtime Vice President and Dean of Students Jim Evans, will provide additional funds to promising students who run into unanticipated financial difficulties that can prevent them from returning the following semester.

The second was Pumpkin Fest downtown. Again, beautiful weather made for a fun afternoon, and it was great seeing everyone in town enjoying the fall. But the highlight for me was seeing the Pitt Kid Zone. The Kid Zone, an idea developed and implemented by Pitt-Bradford students last year, included active fun and learning, such as making bird feeders, getting faces painted, and so on.

When I was there, the Kid Zone was jammed with children and parents who were obviously having a wonderful time. It was great seeing all of the blue and gold on the Pitt-Bradford students working the zone, appropriately enough at the end of Main Street in the shadow of the first Pitt-Bradford dorm, the former Emery Hotel. The Kid Zone is just one of many ways our students are engaged in the community, making a difference, for example, through Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity, the YWCA and the McKean County SPCA. My interactions here in Bradford – with our faculty, staff, and students as well as our alumni, Advisory Board, and individuals in the community – have been wonderful. Having been in Bradford many times, especially over the last year, my expectations were high coming here, but I have to say that my experience has exceeded even those high expectations.

On campus, the faculty and staff have a laser focus on student success, working incredibly hard to make this the best student experience possible. The Advisory Board and Alumni Association dedicate their time, talent, and treasure in their commitment to seeing the Bradford campus thrive. The Bradford community works with the campus community to link the two.

It was an honor and privilege to have been chosen as the interim president this year. I feel fortunate working with such talented and dedicated faculty and staff and look forward to our conversations over the coming months.

Students hang out in one of the many lounges available on each floor of Livingston Alexander House, which opened this fall.

Unlike the suite-style housing found on the rest of the campus, Alexander House has double rooms and up to four lounges per floor to allow students to watch TV, play video games, study and even work out together on exercise equipment.

The three-story building houses 170 first-year students and their resident assistants living in sections of 24 to 36 students, each with its own programming to help freshmen get to know each other. It is also the first building on campus to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards.

End of careers

Two of the university’s longest serving professionals retire Dr. Richard Frederick, professor of history, and Dr. Holly Spittler, associate dean of student affairs and director of career services, retired in August.

Frederick retired as the third-longest serving member of the faculty. He began teaching at Pitt-Bradford in 1979 after earning his doctorate in history at Penn State University.

During his 39 years at Pitt-Bradford, he taught classes in American history from the American Colonies to Vietnam and the John F. Kennedy Assassination.

He is the author of a biography of President William H. Taft and is the author or co-author of books on 4

President Warren G. Harding and Ellis Island. He has received the Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of Pittsburgh and the Teaching Excellence Award from the Pitt-Bradford Alumni Association.

He is known for his witty and entertaining lectures and support of area organizations such as Bradford Little Theatre and the McKean County SPCA. He and his wife, Jan, live in Bradford.

Spittler came to Pitt-Bradford in 1981 to be the director of the then-new office of Career Planning and Placement. Since then, she has been active on campus and in the community.

Spittler was the adviser of the Nontraditional Student Association; was the co-founder of the first honor society on campus, the freshman honor society Alpha Lambda Delta; was the co-founder of the Empty Bowls and Baskets dinner to support the Friendship Table; and was instrumental in establishing activities for Women’s History Month on campus.

She has received the Chancellor’s Award for Staff Excellence in Service to the University and the YWCA Woman Leader Award and is or has been a board member with Futures Rehabilitation Center Inc., the YWCA Bradford and her church. She lives in Bradford. fall/winter 2018

BOOKSHELF Dr. Kevin Ewert, professor of theater, is the author of “Shakespeare and Directing in Practice,” published by Palgrave McMillan in hardback and paperback.

The book is part of a series focusing on the theories of creating a theatrical experience.

For his installment, Ewert spoke with innovative directors who are using collaborative methods to direct Shakespeare instead of using a production to fulfill a director’s vision.

“Once you start working that way, you start valuing everybody’s contribution,” Ewert said.

Two professors were promoted to the rank of full professor this fall: Dr. Tony Gaskew and Dr. Marius Buliga.

Gaskew is director of the criminal justice program. In 2015, Columbia University presented him its Human Dignity and Humiliation Studies Beacon of Dignity Award for his outstanding dedication to equality and human rights.

In 2016, the Obama administration invited Gaskew, along with 10 other educators from across the nation, to The White House to spearhead discussions on criminal justice reform and higher education inside prisons.

Buliga is the director of the applied mathematics program. His research areas cover graph theory, the use of technology in teaching undergraduate math, and programming and statistical modeling with medical applications.

Dr. Marius He has worked with Buliga colleagues from Pitt School of Medicine on three National Institutes of Health grants on models to help patients with Parkinson’s disease and malaria and determining whether trauma patients are at a high or low risk of dying.

In August, the Commonwealth announced $2 million in state funding for Pitt-Bradford toward the development of a building to house engineering labs and shops, computer labs and other specialized spaces to support a four-year engineering program at PittBradford.

One of the options being considered is for Pitt-Bradford to purchase and renovate St. Bernard Elementary School, which is less than a half mile from the center of campus.

The school is the former Bradford Central Christian High School.

Currently, the university rents the school’s gymnasium for practice space for its new wrestling program. During the recent renovation of the kitchens at the KOA Dining Hall on campus, the university’s food service contractor used St. Bernard’s industrial kitchen to prepare food for special events.

Payne presented alongside composition instructor Matt Salvia as part of a roundtable discussion, “Imagined Worlds, Material Nationalisms: Cultural Politics in American Speculative Fiction.”

“It’s decidedly rare for an undergraduate to present at this professional literary conference,” said Dr. Tracee Howell, assistant professor of English and director of the composition program.

“Isaac’s fellow panelists were clearly impressed with his work and engaged with him as an equal on the panel.”

Payne also earned an Honorable Mention in the 2017 Writers of the Future Award for his short story “The Pursuit of Luck,” which also appears in the 2018 edition of Baily’s Beads. Payne was co-editor of the issue as well.

Ryan Shay named men’s basketball coach

Esports on campus Pitt-Bradford is preparing to catch the latest wave in college athletics with its new esports club, coached

The club has been holding weekend on-campus tournaments for anyone to participate in, and is working with local high schools on a competition for Rocket League, one of about six games the club is focusing on. Callinan hopes for the team to compete intercollegiately during the spring term.

Ryan Shay, an assistant head men’s basketball coach since 2014 at the University of Rochester (N.Y.), was named head men’s basketball coach in July.

The Andover, N.Y., native assisted with national recruiting efforts, player development, on-court coaching, and strength and conditioning, while also having a hand in all other facets of the nationally competitive Rochester program.

In his four seasons, he helped guide Rochester to a 67-37 combined record, including a trip to the Elite Eight in the 2016-17 NCAA DIII Tournament. Prior to coaching at Rochester, he worked as an assistant coach at Alfred (N.Y.) University for two years while earning his Master of Business Administration.

He replaced Sean Brown Sr., who served as the Panthers’ men’s basketball coach for the 2017-18 season after guiding the women’s program for the two years prior.

In October, Pitt-Bradford golfers came home with the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championship for the first time since 2002. Johnny Fiore of Marana, Ariz., took the individual title, the first in Pitt-Bradford history. Coach Keith Stauffer was named AMCC Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year. The team will compete in the NCAA Division III Championships in May in Nicholasville, Ky.

Boyer named All-American After a solid spring baseball season as ace for the Panthers’ pitching staff, rising senior Ryan Boyer of Bradford topped it off with a stellar summer with the Jamestown (N.Y.) Jammers.

First, he was named to the 2018 Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game, then helped the Jammers to a league championship. He wrapped up a strong season of summer ball by picking up the Finals Most Outstanding Player.

But the final feather in his cap was being one of two Division III players named a Perfect Game/Rawlings Summer Collegiate Second Team All-American.

Perfect Game evaluates the top talent nationwide to name three 17-man AllAmerica teams made up primarily of Division I players.

Tweeting with the dean

New dean of students gives a taste of Pitt-Bradford life on social media Since Scott Kane came to Pitt-Bradford as dean of students, he has seemingly been everywhere. From Club Commons late at night to an admissions open house on Saturday afternoon, it’s a rare student event that he’s not attending.

Often what he’s doing at those events is tweeting or posting to Instagram, a photo and video-sharing app with about 800 million active users.

HERE’S WHY HE SAYS HE’S TAKEN TO SOCIAL MEDIA When I came to PittBradford, I knew it was going to be important for me to connect with students as quickly as possible and on multiple levels.

I also knew from my three teenage children that their generation doesn’t use cell phones to call one another, or use email or Facebook the way my generation does. So one of the first things I did

after being appointed was to set up Pitt-Bradford Dean of Students Twitter and Instagram accounts.

Students live on their phones, and they are checking these accounts very frequently. Twitter and Instagram facilitate my ability to communicate with students — I can share with them important events or information they might

need to know about.

More importantly, I have found Twitter and Instagram are valuable in publicly recognizing student involvement, initiative and accomplishments.

I can announce an event I am planning to attend, give a shout out to a student who has achieved a goal or showcase students’

contributions to the campus or local community.

I want students to know the university is keenly aware of their individual and collective educational experiences and that we care deeply about them. Social media provides a great platform to give that nearly instantaneous feedback and recognition to our students.

The Success Equation

Paul Woods always wanted to make something of himself, but didn’t know how.

Once he landed in a stable home, success was his for the taking.

P

aul Woods ’14 knew growing up that he had potential, but he did not know how to fulfill it.

As a boy, he lived in a small rural farming town in Illinois with his parents and three siblings. “I grew up in a trailer park where my backyard was literally a cornfield, which was great for playing hide and seek.”

When he was 13, his parents divorced. Then his mother had met a man on the internet.

The man lived in Austin, Pa., 50 miles southeast of Bradford and home to 164 families and the state’s smallest school district. The family packed everything they owned in a rented Suburban and met his stepfather for the first time in a Sheetz parking lot. There were 11 students in Woods’s new freshman class.

After accidentally breaking a window in their trailer in Austin, Woods and his family moved to a small, subsidized house in Port Allegany, Pa. He started high school there in the middle of the year and struggled to make friends and find his place in his fourth school district in two years.

Athletics became his means to making friends. By sophomore year, Woods had joined the track, wrestling and football teams. He enjoyed participating in the sports, but struggled to purchase the proper equipment.

However, a friend of his who worked for a local business, Josh Roach, injured himself lifting weights and mentioned to the business owner that Woods would like to sub in and earn some money toward purchasing new football cleats.

The business owner was Scott Moses, who had grown up poor himself, had put himself through college and been a banker before buying an independent furniture store where he regularly employed a few young men to help move and deliver furniture.

After just two weeks of working for the store, Woods learned that his family had decided to move back to Austin after its home in Port Allegany was deemed unlivable.

Woods argued with his mother, and the decision was made that Woods would not make the trip.

“I was desperately looking for a place to stay during the last few weeks of my sophomore year, but didn’t even consider asking the Moseses, whom I barely knew at that time,” Woods said.

Roach approached Scott Moses and his then-wife, Karen, and told them about Woods’s situation.

At first, Scott Moses was against the idea of taking 8

However, he and his wife had considered taking in a child before, and between Josh, his brother, Matt, who was also a friend of Woods’s, and Karen, they convinced Scott to open his home for at least a trial period. For Karen Moses, it was personal; she was adopted herself and had long wanted to help a child who needed it.

It did not take too long before Scott Moses acquiesced to trying the arrangement on a trial basis.

Karen Moses and Woods went to his former home and gathered his things – all of which fit in one plastic tote.

He spent the first summer adjusting to the Moseses’ rules — having a curfew, eating dinner as a family, not texting at the table, going to bed and not playing video games all night.

“There were a lot of new experiences for me when I moved into the Moseses’ home,” he said. “They took me on a vacation, which was the first vacation I had ever been on.” However, the real test came at the end of the summer and into the start of his junior year of high school.

The Moseses explained that in the coming school year, they expected Woods to go to school, do his homework and make an effort.

“We did not expect perfect attendance or a perfect GPA; we just wanted Paul to put in a real effort and do his best,” fall/winter 2018

“The amazing financial staff at PittBradford went out of their way to get me declared an independent student and allowed me to secure the grants and scholarships necessary to attend school,” Woods said.

Woods entered Pitt-Bradford in the fall of 2010, still living with the Moseses and commuting to campus. “I needed the support of Scott and Karen when I first started college. I had barely made it through high school and was not confident in my study habits,” he said.

He thought he might want to do something in health care and loaded up on credits – taking 18 in his first semester to make sure he would finish in four years. READY to GRIND The Panthers join the ranks of DIII college wrestling On a map of Wrestling USA, Pennsylvania would be the size of Alaska.

Yet a map of the 104 NCAA Division III wrestling programs last year showed only a handful within a threehour drive of Bradford.

On Jan. 12, the new Pitt-Bradford NCAA DIII wrestling program will host two of those teams for the first home wrestling meet in Pitt-Bradford history.

It is something the campus is getting excited for.

‘When the discussions started back in late fall of 2014 about its feasibility, I soon discovered that the numbers made absolute sense.’ —AD Bret Butler “People are super interested in Pitt-Bradford wrestling,” said first-year head coach Colin Johnston.

A former DI wrestler at West Virginia, he went on to become assistant coach and interim head coach at Davidson College in North Carolina before being named head coach of the new Pitt-Bradford program.

Johnston retains the look of a wrestler and said that whenever he wears Panther gear, people frequently stop him in Bradford to meet the new coach of the new team.

“They’re excited about coming to our matches,” he said. “People love the sport of wrestling.”

Pennsylvanians, Ohioans and New Jerseyites especially seem to love wrestling, which makes the sport a perfect addition to help meet Pitt-Bradford’s admissions goals.

Already interest is high. The first-year roster boasts 18 wrestlers, including five transfer students from the two-year Mercyhurst College North East campus.

At an admissions open house in November, Johnston hosted several recruits from neighboring states. “There are a ton of student-athletes who want to wrestle,” he said.

As further evidence of the sport’s popularity, Pitt-Bradford is one of seven universities adding DIII wrestling this year.

Athletic Director Bret Butler said, “The addition of varsity wrestling at Pitt-Bradford was a great decision. Pennsylvania high school wrestlers were looking for collegiate programs to continue their careers at the collegiate level.”

Johnston, who grew up in Eighty Four, Pa., attributes the success of the sport in Pennsylvania to the clubs where many young wrestlers begin. “I think it’s the coaching staffs that do such a great job working with wrestlers at such a young age,” he said.

Johnston himself began wrestling at age 3, trailing behind an older brother to a local wrestling club.

Later, Johnston enrolled in Quest Wrestling Club, owned and operated by Coach Jim Akerly, who gave Johnston his start not only in wrestling, but also coaching.

After his own practices as a teenager, Johnston would stay at the gym and help with coaching younger wrestlers. “His coaching style is what I adopted,” he said.

What got Pitt-Bradford administrators like Butler to begin looking at wrestling was a pre-med student named Andrew McRandal ’18, who had wrestled in high school and found a few like-minded friends who wanted to continue wrestling in college.

“I had wanted to start a wrestling team because it was something I had really enjoyed and wanted to spend my free time doing,” McRandal said. Butler promised McRandal he would look into it.

Butler put McRandal in touch with Kathy Moonan, accounts payable manager and a huge supporter of Pitt-Bradford athletics and Bradford wrestling.

McRandal said of Moonan, “I don’t know too many people who can do everything at the same time and do it well. She was such an integral part of what happened. I could never thank her enough for what she did.”

Another early supporter was Rich Kahle, facilities and fitness center manager and former wrestler himself, who helped the team find practice space and even set up and clean mats. “He was just always out there willing to help out and was very interested in it,” McRandal said.

Like many other teams on campus, the wrestling team also committed itself to community service.

“It was a really wholesome experience for everyone involved,” McRandal said of the club team.

The second breakthrough for the program came in 2017, when Moonan asked her friends and local wrestling supporters Kevin and Cindy Keane to make a gift that allowed the club to begin wrestling intercollegiately and laid the groundwork to make the jump to a DIII team.

Moonan had been hooked on wrestling when her own son, Matthew, now an accounting major on campus, started in the sport with the Bradford Junior Wrestling Club, alongside the Keanes’ sons Dillon and Colby. Even without her son on the Pitt-Bradford club team, Moonan drove to tournaments to support fall/winter 2018

On a Saturday morning in November, Moonan dropped off cookies, fruit and power bars for the team’s trip to Cleveland to wrestle in the John Carroll Duals.

She got a hug from senior Kendric Moore, one of the wrestlers who had been involved at the club level, as the sleepy wrestlers started to stretch out or shoot hoops while waiting for the rest of the team to show up.

“This is a dream come true,” she said, beaming at them.

Having a coach this year is what has made the biggest difference between the club and NCAA levels, the wrestlers said.

Mitch Dowd is a sophomore from Pottstown, Pa., wrestling at 197 pounds this year. He wrestled last year with the club and was one of five wrestlers who traveled to Allen, Texas, in March to compete at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association’s National Championships on behalf of the Panthers.

Although a wrestler in high school, Dowd said that he had not even planned on wrestling in college, but a friend brought him along to club practice.

“We all got along really well,” he said. “Andy and Kathy did a lot for us.

“The only thing we were missing was a coach.”

He said he enjoyed the more approachable club level of the sport, but that he has no complaints about the new full-fledged team. “It’s a little more organized now that we have a coach.”

Dowd also said that he has seen a lot of support from the Pitt-Bradford faculty.

Quentin Ellis is a junior from Olean, N.Y., who wrestles at 184 pounds. He is one of five students on the team who transferred to Pitt-Bradford after wrestling and completing two years of college at Mercyhurst North East.

together,” he said of transferring from the two-year program alongside his teammates. He also liked that Pitt-Bradford had a good reputation for his chosen major, criminal justice.

He likes the idea of being on the first team.

“It is pretty exciting to be part of the history of PittBradford,” he said.

McRandal said he is not disappointed to have missed the transformation to DIII as a wrestler.

“I wish I could have wrestled for Division III, but I have learned so much from wrestling and what Pitt-Bradford had to offer me, and that has contributed to my success as a person,” he said, adding that he wanted to make sure the next generation of students had the chance to enjoy wrestling at PittBradford like he did.

This fall, he was able to make the short trip from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he is a first-year medical student, to nearby Penn State Behrend, where he watched his teammates compete in their first NCAA DIII dual match. It was a match that would leave him hoarse from cheering.

“They wrestled so well,” he said, “and it was great to see the guys returning from last year on the mat and seeing those guys take it to that next level.”

A Year of Transitions

Progress being made toward new program, increased engagement five-year strategic plan – a plan that serves as our map for navigating the increasingly choppy waters of higher education. We continue to have great success in pursuing our goal of transforming the lives of our students and through them making the world a better place. We are making progress on all eight of the pillars of our current plan.

Following is a brief summary of progress during 2017-18, year three of our strategic plan.

2017-18 will be remembered as a year of transition as we saw the retirement of Livingston Alexander, president of PittBradford for the past 15 years. We also saw the retirement of Jim Evans, our vice president and dean of student affairs and a member of our campus community for more than 40 years. Although the presidential search will continue, we successfully recruited a terrific replacement for Jim. You can see how he is using social media in this issue.

As you have heard in previous reports, this is a challenging time for regionally focused higher education institutions.

In the Northeast and Midwest, the combination of an aging population and declining birthrate (and population loss in some areas) has resulted in reductions in the number of high school graduates. This trend will continue through the early 2030s. In Western Pennsylvania, the result has been enrollment declines in the regionally focused colleges and universities, both public and private.

We have now completed year three of our most recent

NEW LEVELS OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE — Establish standards of excellence in academic programs that distinguish Pitt-Bradford as an outstanding provider of higher education.

• We continued to work on both academic and facilities paths to develop our new engineering technology majors. In the spring, we received $2 million from the state toward capital needs for the project. We have engaged an architectural firm to conduct a feasibility study to determine the best facility for the programs.

• We used external consultants to assess the feasibility of new programs for physical therapist assistant and occupational therapist assistant.

• We also have begun developing a bachelor’s degree program in environmental science, which will tap into the abundant natural resources in our area.

STUDENT ENROLLMENT — Recruit qualified students to meet enrollment targets and promote high standards of performance in scholarship, innovation and service.

In fall 2018, we enrolled 356 new freshmen and 96 new transfer students. Total enrollment continues to be a challenge, reflecting the overall regional trend.

However, the enrolled classes are strong in quality measures such as the SAT (average 1076.4) and diversity (32 percent of our students self-identify as a member of one of the underrepresented minorities.)

To reduce our dependence on regional students and diversify the student body, we continue to enroll students from across Pennsylvania, the United States and the world. 2017-18 included students from more than 60 Pennsylvania counties; 28 states, including fall/winter 2018

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AND ACADEMIC SUCCESS — Create a vibrant academic campus culture that fosters a sense of belonging for all students, engages them in the academic and social life of the campus, supports student success and promotes a lifelong affiliation with Pitt-Bradford.

• Results from the National Survey of Student Engagement reaffirmed our reputation for providing a highly personal and supportive campus environment.

Ratings of our campus by first-year and senior students were significantly higher than peer institutions in the quality of interactions with staff, support services offered and assistance in helping students succeed academically.

• Nearly 20 percent of our student body plays on a varsity sports team, successfully juggling academics and sports.

• We continued to pilot a Summer Bridge Program for at-risk freshmen and added a new year-long program called College Life Coaching, which together produced higher retention rates than the average for the general freshman population.

• Many of our students are volunteering in the commufall/winter 2018

nity, giving them valuable experience and forging quality relationships with members of the Bradford community. For example, our students are helping at the SPCA, the YWCA, Friendship Table, Special Olympics and CARE for Children. Students volunteered more than 4,000 hours.

A DIVERSE COMMUNITY OF SCHOLARS—Create a mutually respectful, enterprising and intellectually curious community of students, faculty and staff who value and embrace diversity in all of its forms, manifestations and expressions.

• Our students embrace our goal to create a diverse community of scholars. A survey of incoming students this summer showed that 99.6 percent expected to socialize with someone of a different race/ethnicity.

Additionally, 87 percent of these incoming students said their ability to work cooperatively with diverse people was either a major or a somewhat strong strength.

• We are implementing new guidelines for searches that should improve the diversity of applicant pools for faculty/staff vacancies.

• Our faculty and staff continue to bring speakers to campus who address topics that address diversity and inclusion.

REGIONAL ENGAGEMENT AND OUTREACH— Enhance the quality of life in the region by sharing our expertise, knowledge and experience in service to the educational, economic and cultural development of Northwest and North Central Pennsylvania and Western New York.

STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS AND ENHANCED VISIBILITY — Communicate our mission/vision/ values to external as well as to internal constituencies, utilizing our institutional strengths to advance the institution and to support our vibrant campus culture and sense of belonging of all constituencies.

• We are reaching out to regional chambers of commerce and companies to help promote awareness of Pitt-Bradford as a regional asset in recruiting new hires and acquiring employees through our Career Services office. We continue to make university facilities available for corporate and not-for-profit events.

• We continue to work to build our internship programs, providing valuable opportunities for students and increasing our impact on the regional economy.

• Since opening in May 2017, the Marilyn Horne Museum and Exhibit Center has had nearly 4,000 visitors from around the world. The museum’s community engagement programming has further helped to strengthen Pitt-Bradford’s ties to the local community and the six-county region it serves.

• For more than a decade, Pitt-Bradford Arts has been the cultural center of the six-county region.

Performances, lectures and art exhibitions reflect the values and goals of an academic institution while entertaining, challenging and inspiring our patrons.

• For the 15th consecutive year, The Princeton Review has recognized Pitt-Bradford as one of the best colleges in the Northeast.

• Washington Monthly magazine ranked our campus 29th out of 150 baccalaureate colleges in the United States based on our ability to recruit and graduate lowincome students; to produce cutting-edge scholarship; and to encourage students to give back. This is the third time the magazine has recognized our campus.

• The Student Loan Report website cited our campus for offering more financial aid dollars to our students than any other public college in Pennsylvania and ranked us 22nd in the nation.

• For the fourth consecutive year, Pitt-Bradford was named a College of Distinction, which also recognized the university’s business management, education and nursing programs.

• National marketing firm Stamats helped us enhance and update our marketing and messaging efforts, which resulted in a new design for our tagline, “beyond,” and enhancements to our recruiting materials.

Pitt-Bradford 2016–2017 2017–2018 FINANCIAL AND CAPITAL RESOURCES — Enhance and leverage financial and material resources in order to most effectively serve a population of 1,500 to 1,800 FTE students and an engaged community of faculty and staff.

VIII: CAMPUS AMBIENCE AND SUSTAINABILITY — Pursue and promote environmentally sustainable operational practices, as well as architecturally consistent design, construction and landscaping, in order to most responsibly steward and further enhance the beauty and functionality of our campus.

• In June, we dedicated the Livingston Alexander House, our new first-year residence hall, and expect it to receive Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification for its environmentally friendly and energy-efficient features. It will be our first LEED-certified building.

• We opened the renovated KOA Dining Room. The project included extensive renovations to improve the food prep area behind the scenes, including changes to improve energy efficiency. Up front, changes included a new salad area, an expanded pizza area, new carpeting and 50 additional seats.

• Over the year, we worked with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to upgrade Dorothy Lane, which included replacing the bridge and creating sidewalks on both sides, developing a 10-foot-wide fall/winter 2018

Representatives from our campus participated on the University Sustainability Committee and helped to write the Sustainability Plan for Pitt.

For the second year, our campus earned the “Tree Campus USA” designation by the Arbor Day Foundation.

We co-sponsored two environmental studies retreats for faculty and students.

The director of the Energy Institute has enhanced the visibility of the institute by presenting its benefits as a resource at regional forums and conferences.

Additionally, the institute has collaborated with local industry and nonprofits to assist in research projects.

Thanks to the work of President Alexander, strategic planning on our campus is baked into the DNA. The planning process is broad-based and seeks to match core competencies with market needs. It focuses on developing a widely understood longer-term vision and goals that result in specific objectives within annual plans that serve to align resources with prioritized activities.

The Pitt-Bradford planning process has been critical in the progress of the campus. It has worked because of the guidance and participation of our faculty, staff, Advisory Board and Alumni Association. All of you have been key to implementing the vision of becoming the college of choice for students in our region and beyond.

• More than $400,000 was raised for the Dean Evans Legacy Fund, which was created to help those promising students who experience unanticipated financial difficulties. The fund was named in honor of Jim Evans, on the occasion of his retirement.

• Our supporters continue to be incredibly generous with their time, talent and treasure. In fiscal year 2018, we received $2,045,710 in pledges and cash.

• Our faculty and staff continue to show their commitment to Pitt-Bradford. More than two-thirds of our employees – 68 percent – made a gift during FY18.

• Members of our Advisory Board and PBAA board of directors have a long history of 100 percent giving — 12 consecutive years for the Advisory Board and 20 for the PBAA board.

• Our students are emulating the generosity of our donors. Forty-four percent of the Class of 2018 contributed to the Senior Class gift for a total of $1,260.

The scholarship was endowed thanks to a gift of just over $9,000 from Anne Keane.

Search update Finding the next president

W

ell, I have my first year as Advisory Board chair under my belt. The year passed quickly with the presidential search, transition of campus leadership and continued implementation of the strategic plan.

In spring 2018, Pitt Provost Patricia Beeson decided to continue the search for our new president. Although several candidates were technically qualified, our thorough review concluded that no one among that group was the right fit to lead this campus. Provost Beeson then appointed Lawrence Feick as our interim president, and he has been nicely assimilated into campus life.

In September, a new provost, Dr. Ann Cudd, appointed Pitt Vice Provost and Dean of Students Kenyon Bonner as chair of our search committee. Drs. Cudd and Bonner traveled to campus in November to kick off the search, outlining the required criteria and emphasizing candidates must be proven leaders, adept fundraisers, committed to diversity, and have demonstrated success in faculty recruitment and retention.

Dr. Cudd also spoke to the important role regional campuses play in providing social and economic mobility for first-generation and Pell-eligible students, opportunities that further the University of Pittsburgh’s overall mission.

The committee is anxious to undertake again the work of selecting our campus’s future leader.

Also in November, the Advisory Board held its annual meeting and, along with standard committee reports, we held two topical discussions. Our conversation regarding the things that distinguish Pitt-Bradford generated many responses, such as student-to-faculty ratios, a safe environment, placement rates after graduation and the potential for in-depth experiences not available at larger institutions.

We cannot overlook the importance of this topic, as we need to set Pitt-Bradford apart from other institutions in an increasingly competitive recruiting environment. If you

would like to add to this discussion, please send your ideas to Lawrence Feick at feick@pitt.edu. We closed the meeting with a discussion of the facilities needed to support the proposed engineering technology programs, particularly whether to build new or renovate existing buildings.

Expanding our offering with these programs would help us to increase enrollments.

As you can see, there are many exciting things happening on campus. The Advisory Board and I look forward to our continuing work in support of Pitt-Bradford’s bright, sustainable future.

Campus reaches goal for Evans Fund

A

major gift by alumni Frank ’64-’66 and Mary Cattoni ’64-’66 Rizzo put the university over its fundraising goal for its new Dean Evans Legacy Fund this fall and unlocked a match from area groups.

The Blaisdell Foundation, Northwest Bank and the Bradford Educational Foundation had challenged the university to raise $200,000 for the Dean Evans Legacy Fund at Pitt-Bradford and that if the amount could be raised, the three groups would match the funds.

The endowed fund will provide money to promising students who run into unanticipated financial difficulties that can prevent them from returning the following semester.

It is named in honor of the recently retired Vice President and Dean of Student Affairs Dr. K. James Evans. Evans stepped down in August after 42 years of service to the university.

The university announced that it had met its goal and unlocked the matching funds during Alumni and Family Weekend, which also marked 50 years since the Rizzos graduated from the University of Pittsburgh.

Frank and Mary Rizzo attended the Bradford campus from 1964 until 1966.

Because Pitt-Bradford was not a degree-granting campus at the time, both transferred to the Pittsburgh campus after their first two years in Bradford.

Mary Rizzo was a Bradford native and a 4.0 student at the time of her transfer, but she was short $300 to continue her education. That’s close to $2,000 in today’s dollars. “I couldn’t come up with it,” she said, and she was afraid she would not be able to continue with her education.

Mary’s aunt wrote to a state senator, who came through with the money. By the second semester, Mary had secured an assistantship job and could cover her expenses on her own.

“This fund was something that was dear to my heart,” she said about the Evans Fund, which will help students with one-time shortages continue their educations.

Former Advisory Board chair William Higie dies

W

illiam F. Higie, chair of the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Advisory Board for 21 years, died in October.

He served as advisory board chair from 1973 to 1995 and continued to serve as a member of the Advisory Board as chair emeritus.

During Higie’s tenure as chair, the university broke ground on four academic buildings, became a fouryear, degree-granting institution and saw enrollment increase from 400 to more than 1,200 students.

Higie joined the board in 1972 at the invitation of then-board chair Dr. Robert Bromeley. In 1993, he was elected to the University of Pittsburgh’s board of trustees.

Higie’s tenure as chair overlapped that of Dr. Richard E. McDowell, president of Pitt-Bradford.

“Bill shaped the Advisory Board to function and operate much like a board of trustees of a private college with committees and councils,” McDowell said.

“This structure and Bill’s leadership were major forces to the development of the university we see today.”

Higie was one of the founders and served as the director and vice president of the Bradford Educational Foundation, which exclusively benefits Pitt-Bradford.

In 1996, the campus awarded him its highest honor, the Presidential Medal of Distinction.

A retired vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary of Forest Oil Corp., Higie served on the Forest Oil board of directors from 1977 to 1992 and also as managing director of the Glendorn Foundation.

Higie was also a longtime member of the Bradford Regional Medical Center board of directors and was instrumental in the establishment of the Bradford Area United Way. Among his survivors are his wife, Pauline “Boots” Higie, and his son David Higie ’76, a current member of the Advisory Board.

PA N T H E R PA C K 1960-70s Tom Barnaba ’64 published a book, “In Spite of … Everything: A Young Lady’s Guide to Those Who Came Before.” Barnaba said the book is “a series of thumbnail biographies on those great, sometimes not-too-well-known, women who have pushed and prodded and fought like crazy to get today’s women to a spot that would have been unheard of only a relatively short time ago.

Judy Hopkins ’71-’73 is a finalist for the 2018 Proximity Essay Prize from Proximity Magazine, which publishes true stories quarterly and a weekly online magazine.

Marianne Brown ’84 received the Sterling Performance Award by her employer, BB&T Bank.

Gary Robinson ’77 has co-authored “The Daily Brew: a 365 Day Guided Journal.” The journal provides 365 templates for writing about thoughts and feelings as well as a mix of active exercises to keep users from getting journal fatigue. Mike Miller ’02 has co-written a new book, “The Elvis Experience,” with Dave Hebler, who was Elvis Presley’s bodyguard from 1972 to 1976. Miller and Hebler met in 2007 at a Kenpo camp. Hebler also taught the pop icon the martial art. Miller is a fifth-degree black belt in American Kenpo and also a student of Hebler’s.

Yara Elbeshbishi ’15 recognized by Pitt Alumni Association

T

he University of Pittsburgh Alumni Association presented Yara Elbeshbishi ’15 with its Ivan and Mary Novick Award for Young Alumni Leadership at Pitt Homecoming in October.

It was the first time that a graduate representing a regional campus was selected for the award, which was established in 2007.

Recent graduates know that Elbeshbishi served two years as president of the Student Government Association before she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and mathematics. She also was a member of the community service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega, served as a freshman peer mentor and competed on the swim team.

After graduation, Elbeshbishi went on to earn her master’s degree in health and policy management from the Pitt Graduate School of Public Health before going to work with UPMC health plan and has already been promoted from policy associate to senior project analyst.

She currently serves on the Pitt-Bradford Alumni Association board and is a member of the Pitt Alumni Association School, College and Regional Campus Committee representing Pitt-Bradford.

Justin Mann ’13 was promoted to senior property tax accounting analyst at DLL in the greater Philadelphia area. He began work with DLL in 2014 as a lease administrator before becoming a property tax accountant.

Abby Sortore ’13 completed her first marathon, the Buffalo Marathon, in June.

Dr. Liz Tillman ’13 earned her doctorate in political science from the State University of New York

– Buffalo and is an assistant professor at St. Bonaventure University in Allegany, N.Y. Dr. Filane Godding-Crumrine ’14 earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from the University of Buffalo and is practicing as a primary care health provider with Bradford Regional Medical Services.

Mollie Hollebeke ’14 is a multimedia journalist for WJMNTV, a CBS affiliate in Marquette, Mich. This summer, she hosted a 30-minute travel special for the station about Manistique, Mich.

Kelcey Schaum ’14 passed her doctoral competency exams at Carlow University, where she is pursuing a degree in psychology.

anther athletics inducted three very different people into its Hall of Fame during Alumni Weekend in October – volleyball libero Tabitha Ryan ’11, golfer and coach Ed Gunkle ’98, and super fan Vic Longo, who retired from the Pitt-Bradford facilities staff in 2007.

While a member of the volleyball team from 2006 to 2009, Ryan became the program’s all-time leader in digs (2,238) and earned postseason honors from the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference in each of her four years.

Gunkle was a standout player before coaching the Panthers to their first AMCC golf championship in 2001, when he was also named Coach of the Year.

Longo worked 26 years for facilities, spending much of that time overseeing the maintenance of first the gymnasium, then all athletic facilities. When he retired, he did not stop coming to campus. Fans and athletes can hear his booming voice over the crowd at nearly every home athletic event.

He also had a great love for music, whether it be performing, recording, or exploring new music. He also performed in choirs in his hometown of Warren, Pa., and at Pitt-Bradford.

Steve Giordano has always loved history, particularly family stories.

For the last 30 years, he has been researching his family as an amateur genealogist. Don’t let the term amateur fool you – he has about 3,000 “leaves” on his family tree and has traced the Swedish and German branches of his family back to 1600. Other branches only go back to the early 1800s.

“It’s either in you or it isn’t,” he said of the research. “I believe that the identity of our ancestors should not be lost, and I have an inherent interest in history. It’s just a reverence for your ancestors – whether they’re royalty or commoners. I want to expose their 40 PORTRAITS

Simple ones are really reasonably priced for around $59 or less. I discovered close cousins who are from the same town as my ancestors in Italy.

The results of some DNA tests are only uploadable to certain genealogy sites, so use one that is compatible with the site you like best.
