Stronger Together: PCCA Employees Thrive at Home

W

orking from home is a new reality for many of us in this ongoing COVID-19 world. Since March, many Port of Corpus Christi employees have been working remotely, adjusting to the “New Normal” and finding ways to continue to improve PCCA and the communities we serve. And while every year brings new challenges, the tenacity and overwhelming ability of PCCA team members to adapt and overcome is a constant theme. The energy and commitment of the “People who Move the Port” is a power source that will endure. Through calm seas and troubled waters, we are PORT STRONG.

Work from Home Tips: » Find your new desk: If you don’t have a desk or home office, find a place that can serve this role away from any distractions. It could be a kitchen table, makeshift desk setup in the bedroom, lap desk or laptop stand.

» Get creative for a second screen: If a dedicated second monitor isn’t feasible, try using your tablet (if you have one) for moments you need to do some research or check your emails while working on another project.

» Remember – you are technically at work: It’s easy to get distracted at home but avoid the urge to stream TV while working to prevent any distractions and make sure to change out of your pajamas because increase your ability to focus on the task at hand.

ebinars have taken on a new form as we continue to adjust to our new normal. With social distancing regulations and current safety precautions being taken, many events and gatherings have had to be postponed or canceled.

But thanks to technology, we have been able to find ways to keep business running without risking the safety of our employees, stakeholders or customers.

Webinars have allowed us to stay connected, share important information, discuss crucial issues and engage with our communities. While we are thankful for all that technology allows us to do, we still look forward to the day we are all able to gather together again.

Beautifying Our Bays: One Giant Step Forward

P

lastic cups, plastic bags – this is just some of the trash you may notice littering our bays. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

The Port of Corpus Christi has received a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency for nearly $500,000 to use towards the purchase of a solar powered trash skimmer system.

The skimmer consists of a large wheel that spins 24/7, collecting trash the entire time and placing it on a conveyor belt to be sorted. It will be placed in the salt flats ditch near Cargo Dock 14 which Sarah Garza, Director of Environmental

“The salt flats ditch is a central point where trash in storm water runoff from residential and commercial areas enters the water way, making it a perfect collection point for efficiently and effectively collecting the trash with the skimmer,” Garza said.

During a vitural press conference on September 16, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recognized the Port of Corpus Christi as one of three grant recipients for projects to reduce and prevent trash along the Texas coast and in the Gulf of Mexico.

Garza and the Environmental team plan to study the trash collected in hopes of providing a more permanent solution for the future.

“We are honored to have received this grant and welcome this opportunity to further our commitment as an environmental steward,” said Sean Strawbridge, Chief Executive Officer for the Port of Corpus Christi.

Milestones in the Wake of COVID-19 PCCA’s Huricane Hanna Response

T

he Port of Corpus Christi worked to keep both its employees and the community up to date on Hurricane Hanna’s development. In the aftermath of the hurricane, the Corpus Christi Ship Channel was down for no more than 42.5 hours.

Texans Helping Texans Sanitize

W

ASH YOUR HANDS. Everyone has been told to do this since childhood, but it wasn’t until a few months ago that it took on a new meaning. COVID-19 has caused everyone to practice social distancing, wear masks and sanitize everything which led to a shortage of sanitizer on the shelves.

That’s when a collaboration between PCCA, HEB and two area distilleries was created to support first responders, healthcare workers and critical infrastructure partners.

Hye Rum and Deep Eddy’s, distilleries that usually mix spirits, halted their normal distilling to make sanitizer when the shortage hit. The distilleries mixed and donated sanitizer, HEB paid for the rest of the costs and for transportation and PCCA agreed to bottle and distribute – all at no cost to those in need.

PCCA Emergency Management, Maintenance and our CEO have distributed approximately 2,500 gallons of hand sanitizer since March of 2020 to 140 agencies, including the Texas State Aquarium, Driscoll Children’s Hospital and to local first responders.

The Port’s Safety Department provides temperature screening for all personnel working the military outloads and provides masks for all workers if needed. Over the last 3 years, PCCA has received multiple vessels and moved numerous pieces, including: » 9 vessels for a total of 4,053 pieces moved in 2018 » 11 vessels for a total of 6,126 pieces moved in 2019 » 8 vessels for a total of 4,132 pieces moved in 2020

Buckeye Loads First Vessel at New South Texas Gateway Terminal in the Port of Corpus Christi

Pin Oak Corpus Christi Loads First Vessel at New Oil Dock

The Port of Corpus Christi is proud to recognize Buckeye Partners L.P. for achieving a historic milestone in its South Texas Gateway Terminal project – loading the first vessel with crude oil sourced from the Permian Basin for export to overseas markets in July.

Pin Oak Corpus Christi, LLC (“Pin Oak Terminals”) received its first vessel at the newly commissioned Oil Dock 14 at the Port of Corpus Christi in April. The new dock, which was a joint effort between PCCA and Pin Oak Terminals, can accommodate fully laden bulk liquid tankers up to Suez-max class with loading rates in excess of 40,000 barrels per hour.

“The milestone reached by Buckeye Partners L.P. on loading its first vessel at the South Texas Gateway Terminal is monumental, particularly as our nation’s economic recovery from COVID-19 gets underway,” said Sean Strawbridge, CEO for the Port of Corpus Christi.

“The loading of this vessel with crude from the Permian Basin is a sign that this economic downturn is changing direction.”

“The Port of Corpus Christi congratulates Pin Oak Terminals on the arrival of their first vessel in Corpus Christi and looks forward to a successful partnership with Pin Oak,” said Sean Strawbridge, Chief Executive Officer for the Port of Corpus Christi.

2019: A Record Tonnage Year With 2019 being such a strong year, the Port of Corpus Christi was placed in a position of stability to navigate the challenges of 2020. PCCA has continued to see record numbers this year because of the foundation we have built, and we plan to continue the trend for years to come.
