Board of Trustees
Portland Stage is a creative hub. Our core Mainstage productions are selected and handcrafted by and for our community, and our innovative Education and New Work Programs are designed to nurture and sustain future generations of theater-makers and theater-goers.

Mission, Values & Vision
We are committed to creating great art, passionate about using the theater to educate, and dedicated to enriching our community.
We began the process of switching all lighting instruments throughout our 100+ year old building to energy efficient LED fixtures, and secured generous funding from the Davis Family Foundation to begin installing LED fixtures in the Mainstage theater.
I am thrilled to present Portland Stage’s 2017-18 Annual Report—a summary of our accomplishments and investments over the past twelve months, none of which would have been possible without your support.

Anita Stewart, our treasured Artistic & Executive Director, was inducted into the University of New England’s Deborah Morton Society, for “outstanding women who have achieved high distinction in their careers and public service, or whose leadership in civic, cultural or social causes has been exceptional.”

Dear Friends,
In the past year, Portland Stage produced two world premieres by female playwrights, received over 170 submissions for the next Clauder playwriting competition, and reached 65 schools across the state with our innovative Education Programs.
What a year it has been! We hope you will join us in celebrating our success, and we thank you for continuing to support all we do.

Portland Stage’s Mainstage productions are created from the ground up by combining the best local talent with professional artists from across the nation. Our Mainstage is the core of who we are and what we do; during the 2017-18 season alone, we presented over 195 performances to upwards of 50,000 audience members from across New England.
6
MAINSTAGE
Our world premiere production of Babette’s Feast transferred to NYC following a hugely successful run—the 2nd highest grossing subscription show in PS history!

4 of 6 plays in our Mainstage Season were written by female playwrights, and we received a 2018 50/50 Applause Award for Gender Equity in Theatre from the International Centre for Women Playwrights

Portland announcedStageour Membership program beginning in FY19, a revamped subscription model with more flexibility and added benefits for our core supporters

Our production of Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill delighted audiences and explored the timely issues of addiction and race relations
7

NEW WORK
Portland Stage promotes and celebrates the creation of new plays in New England. We establish an environment that supports our region’s playwrights, builds bridges between our theater and local writers, and raises awareness of our art form and the work being created in New England with our Studio Series workshops and readings, the Clauder Competition, and the Little Festival of the Unexpected. Additionally, we host the annual From Away festival in collaboration with the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa, where writers from across the globe come to Portland to share their work with our community.
8

Portland Stage received our first
Dramatists Guild Foundation Writers Alliance Grant for The Niceties by Eleanor Burgess, which has since moved on to productions at The Huntington (Boston), Manhattan Theatre Club (NYC), and McCarter Theatre Center (Princeton).

Our Affiliate Artist and Studio Series productions were hugely successful, with sold out performances of Dustin Tucker’s Haunting Hour, and The Roommate, written by Jen Silverman and directed by Eileen Phelan

9
Two new playsheaded for Mainstagethe in the 2018-19 season were developed at Little Festival of the Unexpected and in a Studio Series Workshop: The Half-Light by Monica Wood and Refuge Malja by Bess Welden
We received 171 submissions to the Clauder Competition, New England’s most prestigious playwriting award, each of which will receive at least two evaluations and written feedback

10
EDUCATION
Students in the PLAY Program learned a stanza from the Richard Blanco poem “One Today,” created their own versions of the poem as a class, and performed the poem at their full school assembly in front of their peers
Education is central to the mission of Portland Stage, and we offer vital theater arts education for pre-K to 12th grade students through our In-School and In-Theater programming in the Susie Konkel Theater for Kids. All classes and workshops are taught by professionally trained Teaching Artists and focus on literacy, cultural awareness, imaginative problem-solving, collaborative play, and creative thinking. Our teaching philosophy highlights process over product, deepening students’ ability to analyze, synthesize, and think critically while making connections to the thoughts and ideas behind the written word.

Our inaugural TeenShakespeareCompany student ensemble created a fully-staged performance of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, directed by Education Director Hannah Cordes Our ProgramsEducationreached 65 schools during the 2017-18 season; 9 more schools than the previous year! 11

We executed extensive community engagement surrounding Babette’s Feast, including an audience and awarenessbuilding eventfor local Cultural, Faith, and Community Leaders at Tony Award-winning Lighting Designer Christopher Akerlind’s home
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
In partnership with Pine Tree Society, we welcomed Portland’s deaf and hearingimpaired community for an performanceASL-interpreted of The Niceties by Eleanor Burgess
Our Food Drive surrounding Babette’s Feast garnered 1376 pounds of donated food for Wayside Food Programs
Portland Stage offers many points of entry for a diverse population, and plays a pivotal role in the life of our community by providing the experience of theater for our audience and by making that experience one which enlightens and adds insight into our world. The variety of our programming is designed to meet the needs of a broad cross-section of our population, reaching from rural Maine to the city of Portland, from Boston to the County, from Fryeburg to Rumford.
Through the intimate, personal exchanges that happen through live theater and hands-on programs, we help to shape our community and build greater understanding of the “other.” We interpret and share stories from around the world to better understand ourselves and our place in the world.
12

During the 2018-19 season, we will establish a Community Engagement Advisory Committee to focus on building new audiences and broadening our range of partner organizations.
We continued to build audiences through Engagement Events including Wit & Wisdom, Maine Crime Writers, and our Rush35 Young Patrons program featuring pre-show parties with complimentary food and beverages

Portland Stage promotes access to the theater through multiple channels, including Pay-What-You-Can performances, discounted Rush35 tickets for patrons 35 and under, subsidized Student Matinees, and partner organizations that receive complimentary tickets. Beyond our Mainstage productions, we engage audiences through discussions, new play readings, and Affiliate Artist events, many of which are free or pay-what-you-can.

Throughout the season, Portland Stage hosts several interactive and informative events that showcase different elements of all we do—from production, to new work, to education. Participants meet staff and artists, often rubbing elbows with fellow supporters over wine and cheese, and attendees leave knowing more about how Portland Stage is accomplishing our mission of art, education, and community. Our special events are a great opportunity for our corporate partners to gain visibility throughout our community, and we are always eager to work with local businesses in developing customized partnership packages that highlight corporate contributions to Maine’s cultural dialogue.
In FY18, we expanded our sponsorship opportunities beyond the Mainstage, and secured three new corporate partners, The Cedars, Verdante / NewHeight Group, and Spinnaker Trust, who joined our long-time Mainstage show sponsors: Migis Hotel Group, WEX, LL Bean, and Wright-Ryan

SUPPORTING PORTLAND STAGE
Kristin & Ken Conant

Donor Spotlight:
“Last season, all the shows were great, and The Niceties was the most memorable. The points and counterpoints about privilege and social justice were very eye opening. Two strong actresses gave believable accounts from their perspective, and it was so easy to see their respective points of view during the show.”

“We have been season ticket holders and supporters of Portland Stage for ten years. We like to support the arts, and Portland Stage goes beyond just producing a show. We have connected with Portland Stage’s emphasis on thought-provoking shows, talented actors, and behind-thescenes support that has been remarkable. We really like the initiative for the next generation by making education a priority for so many students.”
Investing in Portland Stage makes a lasting difference in so many ways. The generosity of corporations, foundations, and individual donors alike enables us to surround the work on our Mainstage with education, new work development, and community engagement initiatives that deepen and broaden the impact of the shows themselves. Tax-deductible contributions keep Portland Stage a vital, relevant, inclusive, and engaging theater, and ultimately, ensure the fulfillment of our mission and the enrichment of our community.

“I have only been volunteering at Portland Stage for two and a half years, but it certainly feels like much longer than that! I’ve always loved theater, and have seen a few Broadway and Off-Broadway shows, and I thought volunteering as an usher at Portland Stage would be a great way to continue enjoying that passion. Additionally, it’s always a treat to hear what the patrons thought of a show (always good things)!”

It takes a lot of hands and helpers to produce the exceptional work on our Mainstage, and Volunteers support Portland Stage in many ways. We are always looking for ushers, greeters, stitchers, and more, and all volunteers are encouraged to make as big or as small a time commitment as they can. We are eternally grateful to our 2017-18 Volunteers, many of whom have been donating their time and talent to Portland Stage for years!
2017-18 VOLUNTEERS
“My favorite memory of the 2017-18 season was ushering during It’s A Wonderful Life. I enjoyed it so much, I went and saw it again with my sisters. Also, I have to say, there’s something about the holidays: seeing families laughing and enjoying their time together while watching a holiday show at Portland Stage always brings a sense of warmth and nostalgia. And as a patron, there isn’t a holiday show my family and I ever miss, whether it’s A Christmas Carol, It’s A Wonderful Life, Snow Queen, or another holiday show. I know my family and I will always be there for it!”

From post-production meetings following each Mainstage show to mid-year individual intern reviews, the intern company is given the opportunity to shape their learning experience at Portland Stage. As in years past, the 2017-18 intern company embraced the opportunity by engaging with directors and playwrights on the new play development process, getting hands on experience with sound design for a staged reading on our Mainstage, learning how to take a show on the road during our school tour of Julius Caesar, participating in leading activities in after school workshops and camps under the guidance of a Master Teacher, and providing research for a new play produced on our Mainstage.

The future of theater relies on the passion, commitment, and training of young theater artists. Through our Intern Program, Portland Stage is advancing the evolution and growth of one of the world’s oldest art forms—helping to ensure its relevance despite the challenges facing the performing arts in the 21st century.

Portland Stage aims to build community awareness and public perception of our organization as a creative hub, produce professional theater on our Mainstage, and nurture the artists and audiences of the future through our Education and New Work Programs.
In the coming year, Portland Stage will focus on access and inclusivity by establishing stronger connections within our community

STRATEGIC GOALS
We aim to build a more diverse audience base and grow our donor base while continuing to focus on the work at our core, the Mainstage
