Mission, Values & Vision

We are committed to creating great art, passionate about using the theater to educate, and dedicated to enriching our community.

Portland Stage is a hub of creative activity and energy known for our Mainstage Theater Productions, for creating and implementing vital Education Programs, both in-schools and in-house, and for cultivating new voices in theater through New Work Development initiatives that foster experimentation and artistic risk.

As a leader in New England’s arts community, Portland Stage is committed to welcoming increasingly diverse audiences and to expanding our reach through our education and new work development programs. We strive to be inclusive, responsive, and relevant, and we are tremendously proud of the progress we have made towards achieving these goals throughout the 2016-17 season.

Over 3,300 new audience members joined us for a Mainstage performance for the first time during the 2016-17 season, up from 2,800 new audience members in 2015-16.

MAINSTAGE HIGHLIGHTS

6

Portland Stage’s Mainstage productions are created from the ground up by combining the best local talent with professional artists from across the nation. Our Mainstage is the core of who we are and what we do. During the 2016-17 season alone, we presented over 150 Mainstage performances to upwards of 50,000 audience members.

Handcrafted Theater Made in Maine

The Irish...And How They Got That Way marked Portland Stage’s inaugural production in partnership with Maine State Music Theater.

Our productionthird in the Mainstage season, Arsenic & Old Lace, brought in over 2,500 singleticket buyers and 2,000 subscribers during its 4 week run.

Our Rush35 young patrons program grew to over 600 members, nearly doubling the number of Rush35 tickets purchased from the prior fiscal year.

7

vital theater arts education to children ages 4-18 through classes in our Susie Konkel Theater For Kids storefront space and through programsin-schooldesigned for students Grades K-12.

Inspiring Literacy, Cultural Awareness & Creative Thinking

Portland Stage brought Directors Lab into 5 additional schools, doubling the number of students reached from last year.

EDUCATION HIGHLIGHTS

8

PS Education staff developed and implemented curricula for Directors Lab, an initiative for middle and high school students designed to introduce students to classic text and the impact of interpretation.

Portland Stage offers

Over 300 students from all Portland Public High Schools participated in workshops before attending discounted matinees of Disgraced.

9

PLAY in Schools, our interactive performance and acting workshop, began a partnership with Lincoln Elementary School in Augusta, continuing to expand our reach beyond the Portland Public School District.

Overall, our Student Matinee Program provided more than 7,000 students with discounted tickets throughout the Mainstage season.

10

Portland Stage promotes and celebrates the creation of new plays in New England. We establish an environment that supports our region’s playwrights, builds bridges between our theater and local writers, and brings awareness of our art form and the work being created both locally and internationally with From Away, the Clauder Competition, and the Little Festival of the Unexpected.

Fostering Experimentation & Artistic Risk

During the 2016-17 Mainstage season, Portland Stage exceeded 50 world premieres with Clauder Competition winner Brenda Withers’ String Around My Finger.

NEW WORK HIGHLIGHTS

11

In partnership with the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa, we welcomed writers from Nigeria, Argentina, and Russia for the 20th Anniversary From Away festival.

Over 100 scripts were submitted for Little Festival of the Unexpected, our week-long new play development workshop, and Portland Stage has committed to produce all 3 featured plays in future seasons.

Through our diverse productions and programs, Portland Stage offers numerous points of entry, and we bring community together—to laugh, to cry, to enjoy, but also to inspire conversation and to deepen understanding. The Mainstage is and has been our core, and from that strong center, we have begun to nurture future audiences and artists through our Education Programs, as well as develop the classics of tomorrow through our New Work Development Programs. As a supporter of Portland Stage, you helped to shape the year that was, and you can help us continue to grow and thrive in the years to come. Thank you for playing your part in connecting Portland Stage more deeply with our community.
