AQUATIC CERTIFICATION CLASSES Lifeguard Certification

For lifeguard candidates without a current Ellis & Associates lifeguard certification. Students successfully completing the course receive first aid, CPR, and Ellis Associates Lifeguard certifications. This course is only for lifeguard candidates who will be applying to work at an Ellis & Associates client facility.

Prerequisites: Must be able to swim 200 yds, recover a brick at 9 feet, and tread water with arms up for 2 minutes. Must be age 15 or older by first day of class.

Bring to Class: Swim suit, towel, paper, pencil, notebook, food, water, warm clothes, and verification of age.

Cost: $150 (Classes limited to 32 students)

Required course for all currently certified Portland Parks and Recreation Swim Instructors. Program changes and updates will be discussed. All strokes will be evaluated. Course is required every 2 years.

Swim Instructor Training

Required for PP&R Swim Instructors. Students successfully completing the training program will receive Co-Swim Instructor Certification. Classes at Dishman, EPCC, Mt. Scott or SWCC Pools.

Prerequisites: Must be age 15 or older by the first day of class & able to swim 25 yards of each of the following: • Front crawl with side breathing • Back crawl • Elementary backstroke • Breaststroke Cost: $100 (classes limited to 24 students)

$50 for non-PP&R swim instructors with current ARC or YMCA instructor certification, and current PP&R employees with Lifeguard or Water Fitness Instructor certifications.

Lifeguard Review

For lifeguards with current E&A lifeguard certification. First Aid, CPR, and lifeguard skills will be reviewed and audited with an update given on any policy revisions.

Prerequisites: E&A certification valid through first day of class.

Bring to Class: Swim suit, towel, paper, pencil, and notebook. If you have worked at PP&R in the last year, bring E&A textbook and a copy of license to class.

Cost: $70 for Portland Parks & Recreation Lifeguards ONLY if you have worked for PP&R in the past year.

Teen Force engages and empowers teens through ongoing registration and drop-in programs, as well as one-time events and special activities specializing in:

How it Works First choose the activity you’d like to do & the PP&R site at which you’d like to do it. Next, register for the class.

When registering, let the person know that you will need accommodations in order to participate in the activity. Once registered, contact Inclusion Services at (503) 8234328. If this is your first accommodation through Inclusion Services, you will need to do a phone intake with a staff member at that number. At the end of the phone intake it will be determined whether an assistant will be needed on the first day of the activity to provide on-site support at the age-appropriate class. Future assistance will be provided based on need. The inclusion staff will work with the instructor on how to support you and your individual needs.

If you have questions about Inclusion Services, please call 503-823-4328 V/TTY. A minimum of 10 business days (Monday-Friday) advance notice is required. The Inclusion Services staff will do their best to accommodate each participant.
