Did you know you can view all CMC activities online up to two weeks before the printed catalog is available?

And, that you may enroll online for most classes when registration opens August 17? Here’s how: Visit www.PortlandParks.org & click Register Now! at the top of the page. To search for a class, type a keyword, activity title, or course number in the search bar.

When an activity is found, it is displayed on the Activity Search page. Use the options to refine your search, or click on the activity name to learn more. If it’s open for registration, you may add it to your cart. If not, you may add to to your wish list for later.

HOW TO REGISTER You must be logged in to the system to enroll in classes.

Returning PP&R Customers: If you’ve registered for PP&R activities before, you already have an account - to be linked to it, click Sign In at the top of the page. Then, click “Forget your password?” At the prompt that follows, type the e-mail associated with your account. The system will send you a temporary password you may use to log in.

New PP&R Customers: Click on Create New Account & follow the prompts.

Payment is required at the time of registration.

Many activities have a standard payment plan choice online. For other payment plans, payments not on a credit card, or scholarships, register through the CMC office.

Online pre-registration option for continuing String Lesson Program students: Returning violin, viola, cello & bass students: You now have the option to pre-register for private lessons online between August 5 & September 12.While logged into your PP&R account, type in the appropriate activity number on page 18, click ‘Add to Cart’, and answer the pre-registration questions that follow.

Students new to CMC, please fill out the form on page 19 & submit to us in person, by mail, fax, or e-mail (see page 2 for contact info).

teaching early childhood music at CMC for over 10 years. She is a certified Music Together instructor and holds a certification in Special Education. She believes music is a powerful tool in promoting the development and well being of children.

She loves using her skills and talent to inspire a passion for music in young families at CMC. Connie sings & plays guitar in her classes.

Shera Sinell

has been teaching young children for 30 years. She has been at CMC for 28 years & Sojourner Elementary for 17. Shera uses the teaching philosophy called Orff Schulwerk, which gradually introduces elements of music while encouraging improvisation, play, creativity, & the joy of making music together. She enjoys connecting her activities to the changing seasons & the natural world that children are exploring. Shera sings & plays harp in her classes.

Gulchin Tarabus is in her second year as a CMC early childhood instructor. She has been an Orff Schulwerk Specialist in primary schools outside of Chicago for over 15 years. Gulchin uses an international early childhood program titled Simply Music Rhapsody. Musical concepts are taught in a game-like atmosphere using instruments, dancing, props & puppets. As a professional pianist, Gulchin also enjoys playing piano to encourage creative movement with children.

General Music - Skills for Youth A Sequential Program for Well-Rounded Musicians

CMC promotes music literacy, providing young musicians with the full compass of skills to enjoy music and to play & sing expressively. Through a series of age-specific courses, students get the nuts & bolts of musical terms, definitions & notation. They engage in hands-on application through improvisation & composition, building expressive abilities in a socially interactive environment.

Entry level early school-age classes building the foundations for instrumental study. Enter at any time & repeat until approved to move to On My Way or Skills I. Pre-schoolers may join with prior music experience & instructor approval.

On My Way with Basic Skills

Upper level early school-age classes adding to foundational skills, designed to enter with instructor approval (usually after attending Basic Skills for three terms or more, OR students entering with one year of study on a musical instrument).

Skills Level I, II, IV, I/II Accelerated

Progressively advancing classes for elementary & middle school students who want to build strong reading & listening abilities and become more musically expressive & creative. Students enter in the fall of each school year & ‘graduate’ to the next level with instructor approval. Skills I & II Accelerated is an entry level class for 4th-6th grade that covers the material of Level I & II in one year.

Skills Laboratory

For students in grades 6 & up with or without prior musical experience, designed to give more individualized instruction; instructor works with students one-on-one or in small groups within the class time.

That’s why private instruction is important, whether exploring the basics or working out more challenging pieces. Breathe easy as tone & technique soar with regular one-to-one instruction from a performing-artist teacher, providing a beautiful outlet for creativity & self-expression. 30 minute time slots.

Group Piano for Youth at CMC

Youth - Group Classes & Ensembles

Group piano instruction at CMC follows a two-year sequential curriculum. Learning in a group setting is a fun way to introduce this fabulous instrument, while getting “hands on” experience, making new friends & gaining musical skills! All classes are held in our piano lab using digital pianos that simulate acoustic grands.  Sequential Classes – Piano Foundations Year 1 & 2, followed by Piano Laboratory. Foundations classes labeled by term (1-1 is first year, first term). Class titles change each term. Continuing students call the office for placement (823-3177).

Piano

 Clear two-year course curriculum – Students are equally matched for a successful group class experience.

See the chart below for details. Piano Foundations use books in the Piano Adventures series (available at CMC).

 Progress Review – With the instructor’s guidance & approval, a student may repeat a term or advance. Two weeks before the end of each term the instructor makes evaluations & forwards them to the office staff. The family will be notified only if a change is required.

 Consistent Schedule – During the school year, students continue at the same day & time unless repeating a term or skipping ahead.

 Recital Opportunities - Playing music is better enjoyed when shared! While not a requirement, these performances connect us with others & increase confidence.

INCLUSION SERVICES FOR PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS Within the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) of 1990, Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) provides accommodations to individuals with disabilities/ special needs, so that they may receive an equal opportunity to participate in programs offered citywide.

Suzuki vs. non-Suzuki: which method should I choose?

String Lesson Program students at CMC have a choice of two distinct ways of studying their instrument in weekly lessons. The age of the student will have a large part to play in making this choice, as will how much the parent is able to attend lessons and work with the student at home

Non-Suzuki (Teacher/Student) Method: This is the classic one-to-one approach to learning an instrument. The string player practices every day at home between lessons on assignments given by the instructor. Parent/guardian involvement is not required, however parents of young students are strongly encouraged by the instructor to assist the child with at-home practice. Parent observation of lessons is usually optional, but highly recommended under age 11. At the start of lessons you may wish to discuss this with your instructor. CMC requires parents of new students under the age of 11 choosing non-Suzuki lessons to register for & attend an orientation (see Parent Orientation: General below). CMC recommends students 7 and younger choose Suzuki lessons (see right). The higher degree of parent involvement at the younger ages increases chances of success.

Suzuki (Teacher/Parent/Student) method: This is a family approach to music instruction that creates a “learning triangle” between teacher, parent (or caregiver) & student. The parent, who does not need to have prior musical training, learns with the student & serves as the role model for the young player between lessons.

Parents assist the young students in their practice at home each day as assigned by the instructor. When the student is not practicing, the family listens to the recordings of the songs as much as possible to create the immersion that the method requires for the best learning experience. The goal is that music becomes like another language in the home. Parents are required to attend the Suzuki Parent Orientation class (see below) prior to placement with their first teacher. When filling out the Pre-registration form on page 19, please list availability where the child and practicing parent can attend lessons together. Parents/guardians are welcome to rent instruments to practice at home with their child - see page 23 for details.

CMC’s Private Lesson Program for Youth

The CMC String Program for Youth is more than just lessons. It is a sequential curriculum designed to foster well-rounded musicians. To this end, CMC makes the following requirements:

strives to provide the highest quality music education to as many dedicated students as possible, regardless of the ability to pay. In a continuing effort to achieve this goal, students & parents should seriously consider the following requirements before committing to take lessons at CMC.

Beginning string students are required to concurrently enroll in, attend regularly and do satisfactory work in Basic Skills, On My Way with Basic Skills, Skills I, or Skills I/II Accelerated (see below for fees & page 6-7 for course descriptions & age ranges). Four yearolds are exempt from this requirement, but are encouraged to take Launch Pad to Learning (see page 5) & are required to take Skills at age five.

Registration Process - See page 16 Practice Requirements It is important that students take lessons seriously, practice every day (at least as long as their lesson length), complete any homework assigned by instructors and progress in-step with their ability to learn.

Students who are not progressing to the best of their ability will receive instruction on how to improve practice habits. If no progress is made, CMC will require the student and/or parent to sign an agreement on how to improve practice.

Attendance Requirements & Policies Because regular attendance is important, lessons and classes should not be missed except in unavoidable instances. As a courtesy to everyone an absence affects, the CMC office should be notified as much in advance as possible to allow for instructor schedule adjustments.

Absences are classified as either Excused or Unexcused.

Excused Absence: Student illness or other unavoidable cause with notification as defined below. Excused Absences will be credited.

Student Illness - Notify the office verbally before the scheduled lesson time. Only one illness per term may be excused.

Other Unavoidable Causes - Notify the the office in writing at least two weeks in advance using the missed lesson form. This allows for us to notify the teacher, make necessary schedule changes and process credits.

Unexcused Absence: Any cause not listed above. No credits or make-ups will be offered for Unexcused Absences.

NOTE: A student may be dropped for more than two Unexcused Absences a term, three absences in a row, or four absences of any type during a term.

Because space is limited, a student may be dropped from the program if any of the above requirements are not met.

Withdrawal Policy Once accepted, the lesson time is reserved for your child through mid-June. CMC understands that extenuating circumstances arise and occasionally a student must withdraw before the school year ends. Because of the effort it takes to set up teacher schedules, CMC’s withdrawal policy for private lessons is as follows: Notify the CMC office one full week before the next lesson and a refund of paid fees will be issued for the remaining lessons in the term. A student withdrawing before the start of a term, including those not continuing in Winter or Spring, must notify the office at least one week before the first scheduled lesson. Failure to do so will result in additional fees based on the time of notification. NOTE: This policy is different than the general PP&R withdrawal policy.

Portland Parks & Recreation recognizes that some residents of the City of Portland require lower tuition to attend certain recreational activities. CMC has its own scholarship process, as tuition subsidy is provided by a non-profit fundraising organization through generous donations.

CMC has a limited number of violins, violas, cellos, flutes, saxophones, trumpets, keyboards & guitars available for enrolled students to rent.

Rental cost is $50 per term, with payment due at the time of rental. Scholarships are available.

Rental process 1. Call the CMC office (503-823-3177) to get on a waitlist for an instrument. This should be done even if you are not yet confirmed for private lessons (youth), or if you are on a group class wait list (adults). Youth private lesson students can get on the wait list by checking the appropriate box on the Pre-registration Form (page 19).

2. Once payment arrangements are made for private lessons/group class, set a fitting appointment with the instrument rental coordinator.

3. Meet with the rental coordinator. You’ll complete a rental agreement, make payment & receive your instrument (if your size is available). If one is not available, you may choose to remain on the waiting list.

Preference is given to scholarship students, then youth & then adults.

Portland Parks & Recreation CMC Payment Policies Payment for CMC classes is due at the time of registration. If full payment is not possible for the student, a payment plan may be set up. The first payment of the plan is always due at the time of registration.

Payment plans are scheduled on credit cards, which must have an expiration date past the date of the last payment. Those wishing cash or check payment plans, or needing a different schedule then the two standard plans must sign a written agreement.

Rollover to Winter & Spring Terms

Payment Plans Two standard payment plans are available to CMC students/families registering in person: For activities billed on a SCHOOL YEAR cycle (Private Lessons & Chamber Groups): • Monthly option - Nine payments (assuming a start in Sept/October). Pay at the time of registration, and monthly thereafter. Last payment must occur by May 15th, 2016.

• Trimester option - Three payments (1st due at the time of registration, 2nd in January, 3rd in March). For activities billed by the TERM (preschool, youth, and adult group classes).

• Two payments per term (1st due at the time of registration & the 2nd payment at mid-point of the term).

• Three payments per term (1st due at the time of registration & the 2nd & 3rd on the 1st class session of each month).

Many courses available for online registration have one standard payment plan choice, in addition to the over-thecounter registration payment plan options above.

In order to hold a student’s spot throughout the school year, students beginning in fall are automatically enrolled for all three terms. Registration fees are applied to accounts on the first week of December (for Winter) and first week of March (for Spring). Families requesting payment plans for Winter/Spring must set them up by contacting the CMC office. Account balances or payment plans are due by the first day of the term. Rollover does not apply to private lessons, chamber music, senior piano, or early childhood.

Late Fee • A late payment fee of $20 will be charged each month for a past due of 2 weeks or more.

• Accounts with payments past due may also prevent students from enrolling in future activities and/or applying for scholarship tuition assistance; late accounts may also be sent to a collection agency.

• The late payment fee is not reduced by scholarship or other discounts.

• If financial circumstances make it impossible to meet the agreed upon terms of the payment plan, please contact one of the directors.

Portland Parks & Recreation About the Community Music Center About the Community Music Center (CMC) CMC is a program of PP&R in partnership with the nonprofit Community Music Center, Inc. It has been a popular place for music lessons and concerts in Portland since 1955, and is now one of over 20 PP&R sites offering music instruction. It is also part of the National Guild for Community Arts Education.

About the non-profit organization Community Music Center, Inc. Non-profit partner at the Community Music Center, CMC Inc. is an all-volunteer organization that raises money year-round to increase access to music education through need-based scholarships & tuition subsidy, instrument rentals to students, free or low-cost concerts, and more. CMC Inc. was founded in 1960 by a group of parents and interested citizens to help maintain the Center as a City facility, providing scholarship assistance and tuition subsidy through year-round fundraising. Today, through its Board of Directors, CMC Inc. continues to provide the vital financial and leadership support required to ensure the continuation of this Portland Parks & Recreation program.

• any child living within the school boundaries of the Reynolds and Centennial School Districts who is attending a SUN Community School. Through a partnership between the City and County, a child attending a SUN Community School is eligible to register for programs at any SUN Community School location without paying a non-resident surcharge.

Anyone else is considered a non-resident (NR) and will be assessed a 40% surcharge. NR surcharges do not apply to drop-in activities. Non-residents who wish to register for PP&R activities may choose one of these options:

Non-resident Discount Pass prices: 3 Month Pass: Individual - $25 Family - $50 6 Month Pass: Individual - $45 Family - $90 9 Month Pass: Individual - $65 Family - $130 A family denotes a couple (married or domestic) or a single parent & their legal dependants living in the same residence.

CLASS ENROLLMENT Our classes must meet minimum and maximum enrollment standards. Classes may fill quickly or be canceled due to low enrollment.

WITHDRAWAL & REFUNDS Please notify us at least five (5) business days (MondayFriday), unless otherwise specified, before the start of your program so that we can refund or credit your account for the registration fee. Pre-paid materials and admission tickets cannot be refunded. Participants needing to withdraw after the program has begun are offered a prorated credit or refund based upon when the request is made. CMC requires one full week’s notice for private lessons.

SCHOLARSHIPS City of Portland residents and in some cases, non-residents, regardless of age, who require financial assistance may apply for partial scholarships. Contact individual centers for information. See page 21 for CMC scholarships.

INCLEMENT WEATHER If the City of Portland public school districts (Portland Public, Parkrose, David Douglas, Reynolds, and Centennial) are closed because of weather conditions, PP&R classes and youth basketball in those school districts are cancelled.

However, some sites may be open for drop-in activities. Call the specific PP&R facility for information and opening/ closing times. If inclement weather is forecast on weekends or holidays, call the PP&R facility or program for operating hours and activity cancellations.

PHOTO POLICY Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) reserves the right, and may give permission to the media, to photograph classes, programs, and participants at any of our facilities and properties or any sponsored activity. Please be aware that these photos are for promotional purposes and may be used in future publications and media communications in any format.

If you do not wish to be photographed, please inform staff and we will make reasonable efforts to honor your request.

If you see staff taking pictures, and you do not wish to be photographed, please let us know.

If you see a photo of yourself or a family member that causes you concern, please notify us. As a courtesy, we will make every reasonable effort to dispose of the image, and will not use it in future publications. However, we will not be able to retrieve, destroy or discontinue existing printed publications in which the photograph may have been included.
