Connie Pazienza has been teaching early childhood music at CMC for over 10 years. She is a certified Music Together instructor & holds a certification in Special Education. She believes music is a powerful tool in promoting the development & well being of children. She loves using her skills and talent to inspire a passion for music in young families. Connie sings & plays guitar in her classes.

Shera Sinell has been teaching young children for 30 years. She has been at CMC for 27 years & Sojourner Elementary for over 15. Shera uses the teaching philosophy called Orff Schulwerk, which gradually introduces elements of music while encouraging improvisation, play, creativity, & the joy of making music together.

She enjoys connecting her activities to the changing seasons & the natural world that children are exploring. Shera sings & plays harp in her classes.

Portland Parks & Recreation Explore The Four Seasons Age: 3.5-5 $144 What do composer Antonio Vivaldi & children’s author & illustrator Leo Lionni have in common? Both have produced works inspired by the changing of the seasons! Using creations of these artists as a launching pad, students leap into melody, tempo, meter & dynamics by listening, playing instruments, & movement. Budding artists capture the colorful times of year on paper, sing & dance with others & make connections across expressive disciplines!

All participants must be 3.5 by start date and be pottytrained. Participant Emergency Form required 7 days prior to start date (obtain from CMC office or via link with online registration). Please bring a water bottle & a nutritious peanut-free snack each day, as well as a smock or an old t-shirt for art activities.

Vocalists & all acoustic instrumentalists welcome!

Bring your guitar, banjo, accordion, fiddle, or whatever instrument you have on hand! This is a medium-skill level class. For instrumentalists: basic knowledge of I, IV, V, ii & vi chords in the keys of C, D, F & G; fingerings of 1½ octaves for melodic instruments. For vocalists: ability to match pitch. While geared towards adult participants, families playing music together are encouraged to join in.

Portland Parks & Recreation Youth Chamber Music Program Chamber Groups - Summer Intensive Age: 8-18 Play trios, quartets or other works with string, wind or piano students at your level! Refine ensemble skills & interpretive abilities through rehearsals & coaching. Discover the thrill of musical teamwork & accomplishment.

Prerequisite: at least 3 years of private lessons on instrument, sight-reading, playing in positions (strings) with vibrato. For intermediate and advanced players with good music reading skills.

Auditions are June 2 - 6. Students should prepare a short piece or etude showcasing their ability. Sightreading will also be assessed. See audition information below, and call CMC to schedule an audition. Deadline to enroll is June 6 (last audition day).

Registration is required to schedule an audition.

Limited to 6 groups. Group assignments will be made following the last audition day. Be sure to pick up music about 2 weeks before class. No refund unless not placed in a group.

Chamber Orchestra: Baroque Rules!

Age: 8-18 When are ‘fast’ notes played slowly, and ‘slow’ notes played quickly? Are all notes that look the same treated the same? Get into the minds of composers like Bach, Telemann & Vivaldi, and discover new takes on old rules while playing masterpieces of the era.

The orchestra is open to students who have achieved the level of repertoire in Suzuki Book 4 and above.

Youth Chamber Music Auditions

Audition schedule - 15 minutes per student

Call CMC to register & schedule an audition to assist us in creating the most compatible groups. For auditions, prepare a short piece or section of a work that best demonstrates your ability & two scales of your choice. Sight-reading is also assessed. Participants are notified about group assignment two weeks prior to the start of the class.

Note: We make every effort to place as many enrollees as possible, however due to limits of space & repertoire, it is sometimes not possible to find a group for everyone. In these instances, registration fees are refunded. Registration & payment is required to schedule an audition time.

Portland Parks & Recreation Piano All piano classes are held in our piano lab using digital pianos that simulate acoustic grands. Access to a piano or keyboard is required for practice at home between classes. Limited rentals at CMC.

Piano (continued) Piano Foundations Level 1_2 Age: 6-9 $92 Build on your progress! Investigate the bass & treble clef, beginning time signatures & scales, while diversifying hand position on the keys. Discover how reading real music notation step by step on the grand staff will open up a new musical world.

Prerequisite: Piano Foundations Level 1-1 or the equivalent. Required materials: Piano Adventures Lesson Book - Primer Level (may purchase at CMC) & access to a piano or digital keyboard for home practice.

CMC has a two-year sequential curriculum for youth piano. Learning in a group setting is a fun way to introduce this fabulous instrument, while getting “hands on” experience, making new friends & gaining skills! 









Sequential Classes – Piano Foundations Year 1 & 2, followed by Piano Laboratory. Foundations classes are clearly labeled by term (1-1 is first year, first term).

Class titles change each term. Continuing students call the office for placement (823-3177).

Clear two-year course curriculum – Students are equally matched for a successful group class experience.

Portland Parks & Recreation CMC Payment Policies Payment for CMC classes is due at the time of registration. If full payment is not possible for the student, a payment plan may be set up. The first payment of the plan is always due at the time of registration.

Payment Plans For summer, one standard payment plan is available to CMC students/families registering in person: • Two payments (1st due at the time of registration and the 2nd payment at mid-point of the term).

Payment plans are scheduled on credit cards, which must have an expiration date past the date of the last payment.

Those wishing cash or check payment plans, or needing a different schedule then the two standard plans, must sign a written agreement.

Late Fee • A late payment fee of $20 will be charged each month for a past due balance of 2 weeks or more.

• Accounts with payments past due may also prevent students from enrolling in future activities and/or applying for scholarship tuition assistance; late accounts may also be sent to a collection agency.

• The late payment fee is not reduced by scholarship.

• If financial circumstances make it impossible to meet the agreed upon terms of the payment plan, please contact one of the directors.

Instrument Rentals CMC has a limited number of violins, violas, cellos, basses, keyboards & guitars available for enrolled students to rent. Rental cost is $50 per term, with payment due at the time of rental. Scholarships are available.

Rental process 1. Call the CMC office (503-823-3177) to get on a waitlist for an instrument. This should be done even if you are not yet confirmed for private lessons (youth), or if you are on a group class wait list (adults). Youth private lesson students can get on the wait list by checking the appropriate box on the Pre-registration form (page 19).

2. Once payment arrangements are made for private lessons/group class, set a fitting appointment with the instrument rental coordinator.

3. Meet with the rental coordinator. You’ll complete a rental agreement, make payment & receive your instrument (if your size is available). If one is not available, you may choose to remain on the waiting list.

INCLUSION SERVICES FOR PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS Within the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) of 1990, Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) provides accommodations to individuals with disabilities/special needs, so that they may receive an equal opportunity to participate in programs offered citywide.

How it Works 1. Choose the activity you would like to participate in, and then the PP&R site where the activity is being offered.

2. Register for the activity. You can do this in person at a PP&R site, or on-line at www.

PortlandParks.org. When registering, let the person know that you will need accommodations in order to participate in the activity (online, check the box.)

3. Once registered, please contact Inclusion Services at 503-823-4328. If this is your first accommodation through Inclusion Services you will need to do a phone intake with a staff member. Participants need to register for activities that are intended for their birth age. Personal care is provided for activities in the pre-school and youth category, up through age 12.

Suzuki vs. non-Suzuki: which method should I choose?

String Lesson Program students at CMC have a choice of two distinct ways of studying their instrument in weekly lessons. The age of the student, as well as how much the parent is able to attend lessons and work with the student at home will have a large part to play in making this choice.

Non-Suzuki (Teacher/Student) Method:

This is the classic one-to-one approach to learning an instrument. The string player will practice every day at home between lessons on assignments given by the instructor. Parent/guardian involvement is not required, however parents of young students are strongly encouraged to assist the child with at-home practice. Parent observation of lessons is usually optional, but is highly recommended under the age of 10. At the start of lessons you may wish to discuss this with your instructor. CMC requires parents of new students under the age of 10 choosing non-Suzuki lessons to register for & attend an orientation in September (see Parent Orientation in the Fall 2016 catalog, or call the CMC office).

Suzuki (Teacher/Parent/Student) method:

This is a family approach to music instruction that creates a “learning triangle� between teacher, parent (or guardian) & student. The parent, who does not need to have prior musical training, learns with the student & serves as the role model for the young player between lessons. Parents assist the young students in their practice at home each day as assigned by the instructor. When the student is not practicing, the family listens to the recordings of the songs as much as possible to create the immersion that the method requires for the best learning experience.

The goal is that music becomes like another language in the home. Parents are required to attend an orientation class in September (see Parent Orientation in the Fall 2016 catalog, or call the CMC office) prior to placement with their first teacher. When filling out the Pre-registration form on page 19, please list availability where the child and practicing parent can attend lessons together. Parents/guardians are welcome to rent instruments from CMC to practice at home with their child - see below for details.

Private Lesson Policy Information Practice Requirements It is important that students take lessons seriously, practice every day (at least as long as their lesson length), complete any homework assigned by instructors & progress in-step with their ability to learn.

Students not progressing in-step with their ability to learn will receive instruction on how to improve practice habits.

If no progress is made, CMC will require the student & parent to sign an agreement on how to improve practice.

Attendance Requirements & Policies Because regular attendance is important, lessons and classes should not be missed except in unavoidable instances. As a courtesy to everyone an absence affects, the CMC office should be notified as much in advance as possible to allow for instructor schedule adjustments.

Absences are classified as either Excused or Unexcused.

Excused Absence: Student illness or other unavoidable cause with notification as defined below. Excused Absences will be credited.

Student Illness - Notify the office verbally before the scheduled lesson time. Only one illness per term may be excused.

Other Unavoidable Causes - Notify the the office in

writing at least two weeks in advance using the missed lesson form. This allows for us to notify the teacher, make necessary schedule changes and process credits.

Unexcused Absence: Any cause not listed above. No credits or make-ups will be offered for Unexcused Absences.

NOTE: A student may be dropped for more than two Unexcused Absences a term, three absences in a row, or four absences of any type during a term.

Because space is limited, a student may be dropped from the program if any of the above requirements are not met.

Withdrawal Policy Once accepted, the lesson time is reserved for your child through Summer term. CMC understands that extenuating circumstances arise & occasionally a student must withdraw before the end of the term. Because of the effort it takes to set up teacher schedules, CMC’s withdrawal policy for private lessons is as follows: Notify the CMC office one full week before the next lesson & a refund of paid fees will be issued for the remaining lessons in the term. NOTE: This policy is different than the general PP&R withdrawal policy.

•This Pre-registration is for Summer only. All students must pre-register again (starts August 10) for the school year.

•Instructors may require purchase of additional materials not included in listed registration fee.

•Non-residents of the City of Portland pay a higher rate for lessons. Contact the office for details.

Wait patiently for a call from the office confirming a lesson time. This occurs about 2 weeks before lessons begin (calls begin June 15). If we cannot place a student, we maintain a waitlist through late July.

Pay tuition at the time of confirmation. Once payment is received, the student is officially registered.

Private Lesson Program for Youth – Program Requirements CMC's Private Lesson Program for Youth strives to provide the highest-quality music education to as many dedicated students as possible, regardless of ability to pay. To this end, CMC makes the following requirements, which parents & students should carefully consider before committing to lessons at CMC. 1. Practice Requirements Students should practice daily for at least as much time as their lesson length, complete any homework assigned by instructors, & progress in keeping with their ability to learn.

NOTE: Students who fail to progress to the best of their ability will receive instruction on how to improve practice habits. If progress is still not made, CMC will require the student & parent to sign and fulfill a practice-improvement agreement.

2. Musicianship Requirements Only for String students during School Year - Waived Summer Term The CMC String program is more than just lessons. It is a sequential curriculum designed to foster well-rounded musicians.

• Beginning string students are required to enroll in, attend regularly, and do satisfactory work in Basic Skills, On My Way With Basic Skills, Skills I, or Skills I/II Accellerated. Four-year-olds are excused from this requirement, but are encouraged to take Launch Pad to Learning Music or Basic Skills, & are required to take Skills at age 5. String Program students may take these courses at a reduced fee ($20 in 2015-16).

• Continuing string students are required to enroll in, attend regularly, and do satisfactory work in an appropriate Skills class, Orchestra, Choir, Voice, Piano, Guitar, or Chamber Music (fees vary; see school year catalog or ask the office about prerequisites, special requirements, schedules & pricing).

• The musicianship requirement may be satisfied if the student is receiving comparable training elsewhere. This must be documented with an Exemption Form. See the CMC office for details.

• Students who begin in Summer become subject to the musicianship requirement upon enrolling for Fall Term.

3. Attendance Requirements & Policies Regular attendance is important. Lessons & classes should not be missed except in unavoidable circumstances. When a student must be absent, notify the CMC office as much in advance as possible to allow for instructor schedule adjustments. Absences are either excused or unexcused, as defined below: Excused Absence: • Student Illness – CMC must be notified at least one hour before the scheduled lesson time. Only one illness per term may be Excused. Subsequent illnesses will be Unexcused.

• Other Unavoidable Causes – CMC must be notified at least one week before the scheduled lesson time. This allows time to notify the teacher & make schedule adjustments. Excused Absences will be credited.

Unexcused Absence: Any cause not listed above. No credits or makeups will be offered for Unexcused Absences.

4. Causes for Dropping a Student Space in the Private Lesson Program is limited. At CMC’s discretion, students may be dropped for any of the following: • Failure to progress to the best of their ability.

• Failure to fulfill the terms of a signed practice agreement.

• Failure to fulfill the musicianship requirement.

• Failure to maintain good attendance.

NOTE: A student may be dropped for two Unexcused absences a term, three Excused absences in a row, or four Excused absences during a term. Extenuating circumstances may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

5. Withdrawal Policy Once accepted, the lesson time is reserved for your child through Summer Term. CMC understands that extenuating circumstances arise and occasionally a student must withdraw before Summer ends. Because of the effort it takes to set up teacher schedules, CMC’s withdrawal policy for private lessons is as follows: • Notify the CMC office one full week before the next lesson & a refund of paid fees will be issued for the lessons that remain in the term. NOTE: This policy is different than the general PP&R withdrawal policy.

Community Music Center Need-Based Scholarship Application All information is REQUIRED. Incomplete applications will be returned unaccepted. One form per student, please.

Portland Parks & Recreation recognizes that some residents of the City of Portland require lower tuition to attend certain recreational activities. CMC has its own scholarship process, as tuition subsidy is provided by a non-profit fundraising organization through generous donations.

Application Process 1. Submit this form at the time of registration. A spot will be reserved for you in class during the scholarship application process. For the Private Lessons, submit the form with your pre-registration. CMC requires separate forms to be filled out for School Year and Summer. Limit: one private lesson (youth) & one full fee group class (youth or adult), plus instrument rental.

2. Submit documentation to substantiate your household income level. This information is necessary to help determine the degree of need for each applicant. Documentation must be shown once per year. Scholarships will be denied without proper documentation. We value your privacy and make every effort to keep information confidential. Please remove social security numbers for all family members before submitting, especially if sending electronically.

3. Once your scholarship is approved, pay tuition balance, or make partial payment with scheduled payments. Scholar- ships may be denied for those not meeting payment commitment, program requirements, and/or at least 80% attendance.

Portland Parks & Recreation About the Community Music Center About the Community Music Center (CMC) CMC is a program of PP&R in partnership with the nonprofit Community Music Center, Inc. It has been a popular place for music lessons and concerts in Portland since 1955, and is now one of several PP&R sites offering music instruction. It is also part of the National Guild for Community Arts Education.

With 50 community gardens located throughout the city, the Community Gardens program provides gardening opportunities, plus lifestyle benefits, residents in Portland. Parks for New Portlanders (PNP) is a program initiated by PP&R to provide recreation opportunities for immigrant and refugee communities. PNP works with partners and city leaders to design culturally relevant programs, making sure services are welcoming to communities of color, new immigrants and refugees. With one in five Portlanders being foreign-born, addressing the needs of this new and diverse population is crucial as they transition to Portland’s community.

Senior Recreation is dedicated to ensuring access to recreational, educational, and wellness opportunities for adults age 60+. These wellattended programs are offered throughout Portland and include excursions and van trips, health and wellness, gardening, fitness, computers, biking, book club, Brainpower Boost, arts and crafts, language, floral design, golf, cooking, dance, music, drawing, Hike for Health, Metro Movers, and more!

PP&R offers skateboarding classes, clinics, day camps and private lessons for ages four and up in community centers, SUN Community Schools, and in Portland’s parks. Skate programs get participants up and skateboarding by educating them in skate park etiquette and skateboard anatomy/function, practicing safe stance and bailing out, and finally by boosting confidence and ability in balance, mechanics and control.

Summer Free For All is Portland Parks & Recreation’s premiere community outreach effort. This wildly popular summer series of free outdoor activities is held in Portland’s parks all over the city and is supported by community sponsors, donations, and in-kind contributions.

A resident is: • anyone who occupies a permanent residence inside the city limits of Portland. At the discretion of a Community Center Director, proof of home address may be required.

Acceptable address verification may include a 1) drivers license, 2) Oregon ID card, 3) property tax statement, 4) utility bill or lease agreement with current home address.

Through a partnership between the City and County, a child attending a SUN Community School is eligible to register for programs at any SUN Community School location without paying a non-resident surcharge.

Anyone else is considered a non-resident (NR) and will be assessed a 40% surcharge (rounded to the next highest quarter (.25)). NR surcharges do not apply to drop-in activities. Nonresidents who wish to register for PP&R activities may choose one of these options: • Pay the additional 40% NR fee.

• Purchase a NR fee discount pass as either an individual or family for a period of three, six or nine months from the date of purchase. The NR discount pass takes 25% off the NR fee for the activity. Inquire about this option at time of registration. These passes are not refundable.

Please be aware that these photos are for promotional purposes and may be used in future publications and media communications in any format.

If you do not wish to be photographed, please inform staff and we will make reasonable efforts to honor your request.

If you see staff taking pictures, and you do not wish to be photographed, please let us know.

If you see a photo of yourself or a family member that causes you concern, please notify us. As a courtesy, we will make every reasonable effort to dispose of the image, and will not use it in future publications. However, we will not be able to retrieve, destroy or discontinue existing printed publications in which the photograph may have been included.

CLASS ENROLLMENT Our classes must meet minimum and maximum enrollment standards. Classes may fill quickly or be canceled due to low enrollment.

WITHDRAWAL & REFUNDS Please notify us at least seven (7) days, unless otherwise specified, before the start of your program so that we can refund or credit your account for the registration fee. Prepaid materials and admission tickets cannot be refunded.

Participants needing to withdraw after the program has begun are offered a prorated credit or refund based upon when the request is made.

SCHOLARSHIPS City of Portland residents, regardless of age, who require financial assistance may apply for partial scholarships. Contact individual centers for information.

INCLEMENT WEATHER If the City of Portland public school districts (Portland Public, Parkrose, David Douglas, Reynolds, and Centennial) are closed because of weather conditions, PP&R classes and youth basketball in those school districts are cancelled. Call the specific PP&R facility for information and opening/closing times. If inclement weather is forecast on weekends or holidays, call the PP&R facility or program for operating hours and activity cancellations.
