INCLUSION SERVICES FOR PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS Within the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) of 1990, Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) provides accommodations to individuals with disabilities/ special needs, so that they may receive an equal opportunity to participate in programs offered citywide.

How it Works 1. Choose the activity you would like to participate in, and then the PP&R site where the activity is being offered.

2. Register for the activity. You can do this in person at a PP&R site, or on-line at www.

PortlandParks.org. When registering, let the person know that you will need accommodations in order to participate in the activity (online, check the box.)

3. Once registered, please contact Inclusion Services at 503-823-4333. If this is your first accommodation through Inclusion Services you will need to do a phone intake with a staff member. At the end of the phone intake, it will be determined whether an assistant will be needed on the first day of the activity to provide on-site support. Future assistance will be provided based on need. The inclusion staff will work with the instructor on how to support you and your individual needs.

Important Details A general program may be adapted using auxiliary aids and services, but the basic structure of the program remains the same. Accommodations are made as needed, and can be flexible and creative.

Participants need to register for activities that are intended for their birth age. Personal care is provided for activities in the pre-school and youth category, up through age 12.

If you have questions about Inclusion Services, please call 503-823-4333 V/TTY. A minimum of 10 business days (Monday-Friday) advance notice is required. The Inclusion Services staff will do their best to accommodate each participant.

TEEN ACTIVITIES Teen Explorers Ages: 12 - 21 Venture into the outdoors to discover the many different environments that make up our “home”. Hands on activities bring a better understanding of how trees, plants, streams and animals affect you. Enjoy being outside while creating friendships. We will travel to a different park each day in the Tri-County area.

DROP-IN CLASS Bowling For Fun Age: 10 - Adult Whoop It up with your friends while knocking down pins. Beginners through advanced are welcomed. Bring $4 for one game or $8 for two. To accommodate bowlers who wish to play every week and don’t want to hassle with bringing money each time, we offer a 20 game punch card for $80.

Shoes are free. Pre-registration is not required.

AIR MISSION STATEMENT The Adaptive and Inclusive Recreation (AIR) program offers community-based recreation activities and leisure services specially designed for youth through adults who have a disability or special need. Our services assist people to develop and use their leisure time in ways to enhance their health, independence and well-being.

Have fun dancing to a DJ or a band. Socialize with friends, both old and new. Refreshments are provided. Cost for participants is $5. Facility staff and parents are free, but donations are kindly accepted to help with the cost. Group and foster home staff must stay to assist their participants in the dance unless prior arrangements have been made with AIR by calling 503-823-4333.

Due to the large number of participants who attend the dance, AIR staff is only able to supervise participants who are in the auditorium, social room or the hallway of the center. Staff is unable to provide assistance to participants who need close supervision or personal care in the restroom.

WEDNESDAY ADULT OUTINGS AGE: 18-ADULT Willamette River Jet Boat Ride Travel at a high speed with the wind flying through your hair. Feel the spray of the water as you travel through the city, having a wonderful day. This is a way to see the sights differently.

Picnic At Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge Want to try something new and interesting?

Go somewhere that you haven’t been before?

Spend the day with old and new friends as we travel to exciting locations in the area. Create memories that will last a life time. What will you learn today? Pack your lunch for a picnic in Ridgefield, Washington. We will be eating in a park overlooking the refuge. After lunch we will take a driving tour into the refuge to see the many different types of birds that live there.

We will have a chance to get out and walk some nature trails. Please bring a lunch.

Bring $40 the day of the outing to pay for a 2 hour jet boat ride and dinner afterwards. People must be able to step down independently over a rail into the boat and sit on a bench seat for 2 hours. The Beach At Seaside Enjoy an exciting day on the coast. Refresh your spirit walking on the beach, shopping, picnicking and playing games. A boardwalk is available for people unable to walk on sand, who want to see the ocean. Please bring a lunch and extra spending money.

WEDNESDAY ADULT OUTINGS AGE: 18-ADULT Take A Fun Adventure!

Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad Want to try something new and interesting? Go somewhere that you haven’t been before? Spend the day with old and new friends as we travel to exciting locations in the area. Create memories that will last a life time. What will you learn today? Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad Ride.

We will be riding a train between Garibaldi and Rockaway Beach and then back. This train goes along the Tillamook Bay with views of many different types of wildlife. Afterwards we will be stopping for ice cream. Please bring $18.00 for the train ticket and money for ice cream afterwards. Please bring a lunch to eat at a bayside park in Garibaldi. The train is not accessible. You will need to climb 5 steps to get onto the train.

Glide Down The River In A Wooden Canoe Ready to try something new? Enjoy the day while paddling downstream with old and new friends.

Look for bald eagles, great blue herons and water fowl that live in the wetlands. At the end of the trip you’ll have wonderful memories and great stories to tell. Enjoy a great water adventure!

We will be traveling in a 34 foot long fiberglass canoe, operated by the Lower Columbia River Estuary Partnership. The Canoe is very stable and can hold up to 18 people. After the paddle, we will go to The Laughing Planet for lunch.

Please bring $12 for lunch. Each person in the canoe will need to paddle. There isn’t a motor on the boat. The canoe is not accessible. People will need to step down into the boat and hold themselves up on a small wooden seat with no back support. Call AIR at 503-823-4333 for accessibility information.

We will be dining at Cruise In Country Dinner in Hillsboro, OR. It is famous for their burgers.

Music In The Park Relax in the cool breeze as the notes dance in harmony. Smile as the melody plays while enjoying the great outdoors in all of its splendor. An unforgettable day filled with great sounds and the company of others. This will be an instrumental experience not soon to be forgotten. Come join us in some foot stomping marimba band. Bring a picnic lunch and make new friends.

We will be going to the Washington County Fair in Hillsboro. Admission is free. We will eat lunch at Burgerville before we go to the fair.

Rich in history and surrounded by natural beauty, this town located at the mouth of the Columbia River is a perfect place to escape the daily routine of city life. This area is the oldest American settlement west of the Rockies. Take in the sights as we travel through this location and feel the breeze from the coastal air.

Spend a fun relaxing day fishing, playing games and enjoying a picnic lunch while making new friends. Bring a sack lunch and money to clean your fish.

We will start the day with lunch at Fort Stevens State Park. Then it is off to Astoria to explore the waterfront and the Astoria Column. Please bring your lunch and some spending money.

TRANSPORTATION FOR PEOPLE ATTENDING ADAPTIVE AND INCLUSIVE RECREATION (AIR) PROGRAMS

When people attend PP&R programs there are several ways they can get to the different locations.

Options for people may be one of the following, based on their individual situation.

• Family member or support staff drives them • Regular Tri-Met fixed route services or taking the MAX • Taking the Tri-Met Lift, which is door to door transportation • Walking to the location When people attend AIR community outings, the outings always leave from and return to the same location. The meeting point is at East Portland Community Center, 740 SE 106th, Portland, OR.

It is common for people to use the Tri-Met Lift as their means of transportation. People may be eligible for LIFT service if they have a disability or a disabling health condition and the disability or health condition prevents them from independently using Tri-Met bus, MAX Light Rail, WES Commuter Rail and/or Portland Streetcar service some or all of the time (without assistance, other than from the bus driver).

To request a LIFT application packet by mail or fax, contact the LIFT office at 503-962-8200 or go on-line for an application at www.trimet.org/lift.

All AIR programs are wheelchair accessible unless otherwise stated.

Staff requests no perfume or fragrances at AIR activities.

Community Outing Policy In an effort to keep groups small, excursions include only nine to eleven participants. The outings use one van, which is wheelchair accessible. Staff ratio is usually 1 staff for every 3 participants. A smaller ratio may be available upon request. Participants need to stay with AIR staff at all times. Appropriate behavior is expected throughout the activity. Because of the limited number of spaces available, each group/foster home or day program is limited to three people per trip. You may ask to put additional people on the waiting list.

We are not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged items during activities.

Adaptive and Inclusive Recreation (AIR) does not allow participants, staff or volunteers to drink alcohol or use illegal drugs while participating, working, or volunteering in activities. This includes community outing locations where alcohol is served.

Please remember that all AIR outings are done as a group activity. Participants must stay with AIR staff at all times no matter how independent they are. Because this is a group activity, participants may not get to do everything they want because of the needs of the whole group.

Your satisfaction is our goal! Portland Parks & Recreation strives for 100% customer satisfaction. If you are not satisfied with a recreation program or service, please let us know.

• anyone who occupies a permanent residence inside the city limits of Portland. At the discretion of a Community Center Director, proof of home address may be required.

Acceptable address verification may include a 1) drivers license, 2) Oregon ID card, 3) property tax statement, 4) utility bill or lease agreement with current home address. • any child living within the school boundaries of the Reynolds and Centennial School Districts who is attending a SUN Community School. Through a partnership between the City and County, a child attending a SUN Community School is eligible to register for programs at any SUN Community School location without paying a non-resident surcharge.

Anyone else is considered a non-resident (NR) and will be assessed a 40% surcharge. NR surcharges do not apply to drop-in activities.

Class Enrollment Our classes must meet minimum and maximum enrollment standards. Classes may fill quickly or be canceled due to low enrollment.

Withdrawal & Refunds Please notify us at least five (5) business days (MondayFriday), unless otherwise specified, before the start of your program so that we can refund or credit your account for the registration fee. Pre-paid materials and admission tickets cannot be refunded. Participants needing to withdraw after the program has begun are offered a prorated credit or refund based upon when the request is made.

Scholarships City of Portland residents, regardless of age, who require financial assistance may apply for partial scholarships.

Special Needs Within the American with Disability Act (ADA), a person with a disability or special need who desires assistance with registration and/or participation in general PP&R programs can contact Inclusion Services at 503-823-4328 V/TTY. If you request assistance through Inclusion Services, a minimum of 10 business days (Monday-Friday) advance notice is required.

If you need a sign language interpreter or FM loop amplifier, please contact 503-823-4328 V/TTY, at least five business days in advance of the activity or class. Information about programs and services is available online for those needing a voice synthesis; visit our website at www.PortlandParks.org.

Information Hotline For information on other PP&R services & programs, call the Parks Information Hotline at 503-823-PLAY (7529), Mon-Fri, 8:30am-5pm.

Inclement Weather If the City of Portland public school districts (Portland Public, Parkrose, David Douglas, Reynolds, and Centennial) are closed because of weather conditions, PP&R classes and youth basketball in those school districts are cancelled.

However, some sites may be open for drop-in activities. Call the specific PP&R facility for information and opening/ closing times. If inclement weather is forecast on weekends or holidays, call the PP&R facility or program for operating hours and activity cancellations.

Photo policy Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) reserves the right, and may give permission to the media, to photograph classes, programs, and participants at any of our facilities and properties or any sponsored activity. Please be aware that these photos are for promotional purposes and may be used in future publications and media communications in any format.

If you do not wish to be photographed, please inform staff and we will make reasonable efforts to honor your request.

If you see staff taking pictures, and you do not wish to be photographed, please let us know.

If you see a photo of yourself or a family member that causes you concern, please notify us. As a courtesy, we will make every reasonable effort to dispose of the image, and will not use it in future publications. However, we will not be able to retrieve, destroy or discontinue existing printed publications in which the photograph may have been included.

Register Now – One of Five Ways Online at PortlandParks.org – Click on the “Register Now” top tab. Read the prepared information for our new online registration system, then click the “GO NOW” buttons. Search for classes by age, category, location, keyword, or narrow your search by specific activity or course number.

PHONE – Complete this registration form and call any PP&R site using the phone numbers on the map pages. You may also phone in your registration to the PP&R Customer Service Hotline at 503-823-2525, Monday through Friday, 8:30am-5:15pm. Only Visa or MasterCard accepted with phone-in registration.

MAIL – Mail in your completed registration form to the program center address. Include full payment using your Visa, MasterCard or check payable to the City of Portland. Mail-in registration is also received at the PP&R Customer Service Center, 1120 SW Fifth Ave, Suite 1302, Portland, OR 97204.

FAX – Complete the registration form and fax it to the program center fax number with full payment using your Visa or MasterCard. Faxes are accepted 24 hours a day, seven days a week, but are processed during regular business hours.

IN PERSON – Any PP&R facility is able to process your registration, including the Customer Service Center located on the first floor of the Portland Building at 1120 SW 5th Ave. All Community Centers are open for walk-in registration during business hours.
