Portland Parks & Recreation Family Classes Family classes are designed for parents, guardians and children to interact and participate together. Our philosophy is to honor the child’s create impulses—focusing on process, rather than product. Visual art classes provide instruction in the use of art materials and techniques, encouraging each child’s individual style of visual expression. We recommend both adult and child wear grubbies as these classes can be messy. All materials are included. Clean-up is part of all family classes.

Fascinated by shiny, sticky and gooey stuff? The joy of creative thinking and self-expression are brought to life using media such as paint, clay, collage and sculpture. Together construct projects that develop fine motor skills and enhance creative development.

Unless otherwise stated, parents and guardians are not to attend class but should stay in the building until their child is comfortable. Please have children dress for mess and be ready for a good time!

Clay students please read the “Youth Clay Studio Policy” available on our website. Clay work must be picked up during your class time or during open clay studio times only. Please allow 10 days from the last class to pick up your child’s work. This allows for firing time.

After 3 weeks from the last class, the work will be recycled (due to limited storage space).

Unless otherwise stated, parents and guardians are not to attend class but should stay in the building until their child is comfortable. Please have children dress for mess and be ready for a good time!

Clay students please read the “Youth Clay Studio Policy” available on our website. Clay work must be picked up during your class time or during open clay studio times only. Please allow 10 days from the last class to pick up your child’s work. This allows for firing time.

Gain the knowledge to play anything you want. Explore the essentials of rhythm, finger work, strumming, tablature and note reading, theory, and improvisation in order to begin playing songs and creating your own musical ideas.

Drawing from the Suzuki, Ivan Galamian, and Carl Flesh methods, both beginning and more advanced students will learn how to produce a beautiful tone, develop vibrato, and shift positions, while developing intonation, note-reading, and overall musicianship. The Writer’s Toolbox Ages 18 & Up What to write about? When to start the story? And what voice will you use to tell the story? Learn to make specific, engaging choices while in the generative phase that will improve your work whether you write fiction, creative nonfiction, or poetry. Write to prompts for at least an hour each class. Take time with peers to brainstorm point of view, detail, and tone—that hard to pin down yet pivotal element that keeps a reader reading—to learn what you are writing towards. Reading will be assigned as homework. Some previous writing experience recommended.

I hear George’s footsteps behind me, lacking their characteristic confidence. I shouldn’t have let it come to this.

After all, he brought me here to nurse me to health. He cooked foods from my childhood: cream sauces, brie with figs, and homemade breads, about which I was jocular in my criticism. My mother presaged this with her dating advice to find the perfect soft-ripened cheese and a man to share it with (versus the perfect man and a mediocre brie, she’d jest).

What would she say now?

George’s desire for food to unite us has been a matter of varying subtlety and infrequent success. Once, at my favorite opera, I whispered the next series of movements in his ear: “Allegro, allegretto, adagio.”

“And then antipasto,” he replied with charm.

Over time, my explanations wore thin. I would tell him it was a physiological response to the pressure of my work, of being on the stage, of trying to remain competitive: I wasn’t hungry.

But it was more than this; my inertness of late must remind him more of the young women he first kissed in the moonlight than of the role he later helped me to perfect. That kiss: in a small garden beside a bust of Aphrodite, her nose broken, no doubt at the hands of careless men. He compared me to her, not grasping the metaphor.

“What am I not doing, that I need to do more of?” he’d ask until recently. His attempts to help deepened the inequity of our relationship.

And for his part, my progress was rarely enough. As the end of November neared, when he would return to Portland to begin rehearsals for his new production, the pressure for progress increased. I wasn’t just registering the stress of my life, but also the stress of his.

Earlier today, I asked, eying the stack of his shirts on our unmade bed, “Is this really what you want?”

“This is not what I want, none of this is what I want.” He paused. “I love you too much to see you put yourself through this.”

We have had this conversation before. I don’t want to have it again.

So here I sit. He tosses keys in his hand, perhaps to attract my attention and leave on a different note.

I don’t turn around. I am too well rehearsed.

Portland Parks & Recreation Printmaking & Book Arts Classes for Adults & Teens Multnomah Arts Center Trayle Print Studio offers classes and workshops for serious students and hobbyists alike.

The 1000 square foot studio is bathed in light with south and north facing windows, 15' ceilings, overlooking a garden.

We use green materials when possible such as Simple Green, vinegar and water, oil and soap. The studio is equipped with a metal clay/enameling kiln, Smith acetylene/air torches, oxy-acetylene little torch, oxy-acetylene melting torch, centrifugal caster, hydraulic press, combination rolling mill, dual-speed buffing arbor with dust collector, drill press, flex shafts, 12" shear, metal hand tools, books, vacuum table, and soldering ventilation system.

Portland Parks & Recreation Textiles Classes for Adults & Teens Our Textile Arts Program offers classes including basketry, felting, knitting, crochet, dyeing, spinning and on-loom weaving. The weaving studio has over 60 floor and table looms including an AVL compu-dobby, spinning and dyeing equipment, a wide selection of yarns for purchase, and an extensive library. During class time only, students have access to a weaving design software program called Fiberworks.

Textiles Studio Drop-in Policy Currently registered weaving students may drop-in to the weaving studio at times other than during their registered class.

Students may drop-in anytime the center is open except during certain posted times. If you drop-in during a class, please refrain from asking the instructor for help. For drop-in please sign in and out in the book at the front office.

room rentals Auditorium Our auditorium is ideal for receptions, dances, lectures and performances. It is over 3000 square feet and has 20' ceilings, wood moldings, linoleum tile floors in the main room and a stage with disabled access. The capacity is 180 people seated at tables, or 260 theatre style.

BIRTHDAY PARTIES Birthday parties are taught by professional teaching artists.

Parties may include ceramics, drawing, painting, dance, theater, music, metal arts, glass fusing, tie dye and more.

The dance studio is available for events and classes such as dance, aerobics, and yoga. It is 2400 square feet, has 20' ceilings, and lots of light, wood floors, mirrors and ballet barres. Gymnasium The gym is 2400 square feet, has 20' ceilings. It is equipped with wood floors and a sound system. It is available for fitness classes, and some dances. Events with food, drink, tables or chairs are possible with MAC’s approval. The capacity is 150 people.

Classrooms Classrooms are available for parties, classes and meetings. Most rooms come with a chalkboard and sink. Average dimensions of classrooms are 24' x 25' with 12' ceilings. Projection screens are available. The capacity is 45 theatre style and 50 standing room.

Conference Room The conference room is perfect for neighborhood and board meetings, or business presentations to smaller groups. It is equipped with bulletin boards, dry erase board, a large projection screen and computer or DVD hook-up. An LCD projector is available for rent. Seats up to 14 around table and 20 in room.

Kitchen & Kitchenette The full commercial kitchen includes appliances. The kitchenette includes range, refrigerator and microwave. Dishes, pots and pans, etc. are not included in either space.

All rental rooms and bathrooms are wheelchair accessible.

Portland Parks & Recreation REGISTRATION: Receipt of full payment is required for registration, unless otherwise arranged. If you have a nonresident pass, please let us know. Please call if you receive a returned check or declined bank card notice, either of which void registration.

RESIDENT / NON-RESIDENT DEFINITIONS A resident is: • anyone who occupies a permanent residence inside the city limits of Portland. At the discretion of a Community Center Director, proof of home address may be required.

Acceptable address verification may include a 1) drivers license, 2) Oregon ID card, 3) property tax statement, 4) utility bill or lease agreement with current home address.

• any child living within the school boundaries of the Reynolds and Centennial School Districts who is attending a SUN Community School. Through a partnership between the City and County, a child attending a SUN Community School is eligible to register for programs at any SUN Community School location without paying a non-resident fee.

Registration Information

Anyone else is considered a non-resident (NR) and will be assessed a NR fee. NR fees do not apply to drop-in activities.

Non-residents who wish to register for PP&R activities may choose one of these options: • pay the additional 40% non-resident fee.

• purchase a non-resident pass as either an individual or family for a period of three, six, nine or twelve months from the date of purchase. Once a non-resident pass is purchased, you can sign up for classes and memberships at the resident rate. Inquire about this option at time of registration.

Non-resident passes are not refundable. Passes are activated at the date of purchase and must be valid at the time of registration through the last day of class to be eligible for the resident fee.

CLASS ENROLLMENT: Our classes must meet minimum and maximum enrollment standards. Classes may fill quickly or be canceled due to low enrollment.

WITHDRAWAL & REFUNDS: Please notify us at least five (5) business days (Monday-Friday), unless otherwise specified, before the start of your program so that we can refund or credit your account for the registration fee. Prepaid materials and admission tickets cannot be refunded.

Participants needing to withdraw after the program has begun are offered a prorated credit or refund based upon when the request is made.
