Architectures always attracts me. In my point of view, architecture is not just a house for its fuctions, it provides a sence of different levels of space in people’s mind. The contrast and connection in arhitecture is very intereting. Spaces does not only be divided by physical wall, but also can by some other elements, such as light.

Spaces keep changing between interior space and exterior space as the time or season changing. Thus, when I design an architecture, I always consider the light effect (natural effect), space connection, and space contradiction. This idea was also get developed in the module 1, from Zaha’s Burnham Pavilion. It has vey interesting idea about threshold and circulation. So I continued this idea in my own pavilion in module 3.

In this semester, we have more chance to get used to the design of pavilions. During this process, we tried a lot of new skills in building digital models, such as grasshopper and unreal engine.

These are two totally new skills for me in design and I found they

are very useful. However, my skills for these two design techiques still needs further practicing.

01 - Diagramming Design Precedent

Isometric of my precedent study My precendent study is to build up the model of Zaha Hadid’s Burnharm Pavilion. This pavilion has very organic shape, which is build up by steel structure and fabric cover. Threshold plays a very important roll in this pavilion. The two large openings and the openings on the top makes the space inside and outside the pavilion linked together. Thus, it makes people walk through the pavilion without notice.

Surface and Waffle

Waffels at this side has greater variations of slope.Panels are formed by simple shape. There is a small square triangle opening on the top.

At this side with gentle slope, panels are more complicated. Each panel is formed by two triangles. One triangle is three opennings.

More openings on panels create a hamonic transition from the exterior and interior space of the structure.

Each panel at this side has gentle slope and relatively small openings on the top.

It create a clear boundary between interior and exterior. In addition, it also produce contrast between light and shadow.

Computation Workflow

By adjusting the grasshopper script, I built several surfaces with different angles inorder to find a surface that worked well together. The surfaces that I first built is two surfaces with very gentle slop. Later I found that these surface are too flat to create interesting panels. So I tried the second one and the third one. These two has large varience on slop but very hard to stand. The last surfaces has variations on the slop. It also has a large base inorder to keep it standing stably. Thus, I chose the last one.

I tried four different surfaces and finally chose the last one. The last two surface has a large base which enable the structure to stand stably. At the same tiime, it also has relatively various slope. I also chose to use 3D panels at both sides as it can create more interesting vrious on the model.

Lazer Cut Line Details and Fabrition Process

For the panels, I first devide them in seperate groups and then enrol the group of panels. Then add tabs in rhino and adjust them into a suitable size. I found that it is very important to arrange the unrolled curves in order in the laser cut file. It helps a lot when making models. The last step is to devide those curves in to different layers. Black for cutting and red for folding.

SOLID AND VOID

Intersections that do not interact with each other create several relatively private spce. These small individual spaces also have opening on top for lightening.

The gaps between cutting geometries form columns at the side of the structure. These columns are used to support the structure and create a semi-openspace in the structure.

Where the geometry interacts with the surface envelope, it creates a opening after booleandifference. Thus, it forms a open space.

Geometries inside create a hall inside the structure with three large openings. It provides a gental tranform from inside to outside. The small openings on the top also provide dramatical lightening to the interior.

Computational Process

Creating the boolean by script was relatively straight forward. By using multiple attractors to adjust the grid and build different geometries inside to booleandiffference. In the workshop, we use simple geometry as example. Later I started to use more complex geometries in launch box. Further more, I also tried to use different geometries in one grid.

The pavilion is devided in to the spaces at two levels. The wooden decking can be used as either stairs or the seats for people to held seminar during the lunch time. It can also be used as the platform for the quartet performence during the night.

The key concept was to design an open pavilion which can connect with its surround natural environment hamonicly. There are many threshold in both the sides and the top of the pavilion, which help to connect the inner space and the outer space in a continuous way. The pavilion is mainly build by earth materials, such as concrete, steel and timber. The use of material makes the pavilion become more close to the natural surroundings.

The first floor of the pavilion. People can sit here and enjoy a better view. This area can be used as stage as well.

These steel columns supports the roof of the pavilion. At the sametime, it create a semi-opened corridor within the pavilion.

At day time, the extended roof on top will provide shadows for people who sit on the wooden structure below.

At day time, It is the main interior space of the pavilion with a large threshold. At night, it can be used as the stage for music band.

Shallow water pool. Provide a nice inverted image of the pavilion, surrounding environment during day time and lightning during night time.

Concrete decking in the middle of the water pool. People can get access to the pavilion througn here. When the porformence begain, this space can be used as auditorium.

Design Iteration

This pavilion is formed by bended steel beams.

It has very organic curved shape. The allocation of the beams makes the pavilion become semiopen space. But in this pavilion, there is not many previous techniques been used.

I continued using the curved form in this pavilion. This one has a closed surface with openings on top. It forms a more distinct contrast between the inner space and the outter space. But this form is very similar with the Burnham Pavilion in module 1. So I did not use it.

I rotate the curved form in an opposite way and adjust it. It forms an great difference in height. But still lack of the previous skills.

Computational Process

Adjust the four curves can extrude them in both X& Y axis.

Add two curves to create the roof. Pipe the lines.

Use Voronoi to build a brep. Trim the brep to get the paneled roof

Apply materials to the pavilion. Get a preview of the whole pavilion.

Fabrication process

For the model of the Ryhthem Pavilion, I chose to use 3D Print only as I want to showed more details accurately.
