It’s the Cars and the People! Editor’s Note

I am also grateful for all of the positive feeback we’ve received for our newly formatted newsletter.

by Brianna Becker, Vice-President and Newsletter Editor, PCA-LA

Together, we make PCA-LA a great environment to share our love of all things Porsche. Remember, it’s the cars and the people!

What an amazing month it has been! PCA-LA has hosted so many events in the past few weeks that this issue of Porscherama is literally bursting at its seams! This issue features contributions from many of our members. We are so thankful to you for continuing to take pictures and write about events you attend, and we welcome your submissions. Keep them coming!

Hope to see you at one of our breakfasts or other events soon! Brianna

In this issue, we have an update on upcoming events from Activities and Driving Events Chair Randy Blaesi. We also have an article by Treasurer Christopher McGranahan describing PCA-LA’s weekend in the picturesque Santa Ynez Valley, full of culinary, oenological and equine events. Membership Director Joseph Shubitowski wrote about the drive he led to the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve. Next, Board Member Harry Kraushaar reflected on what impressed him in our latest Tech Day at Haas Entertainment. Our Technical Director Marc Bixen submitted a must-read article on what Rennsport Reunion is and why Laguna Seca racetrack is the place to be this September, and we also have a piece on how the California Festival of Speed at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana lived up to its billing as “a Porsche enthusiast’s dream weekend!” PCA-LA is definitely the place to be right now. Our membership is growing by leaps and bounds on a daily basis, and we have a whole slew of great events coming up. See Randy’s column, as well as our new calendar on the inside of the back page for more details! Don’t forget that the Porsche Club of America’s 60th annual Porsche Parade will be held this June 21-27 in French Lick, Indiana. And since this year’s Parade coincides with the Club’s 60th Anniversary Celebration, there will be a series of special events at French Lick that pay tribute to the cars and the people who have made PCA the greatest single marque sports car club in the world! Another event not to be missed is our own PCA-LA Zone 8 annual Concours d’Élégance, which takes place on Sunday, July 12, 2015 at the Santa Monica Museum of Flying. This is the highlight of our year, and we hope you will all attend. Great cars abound!

Even the horses posed for our newsletter! See Chris McGranahan’s Santa Ynez article. Photo by Art Yuter

Upcoming Events From our Activities Chair

Our club has a lot of activities coming up over the next few months. Our premier event of the year is the Concours on July 12, 2015 at the Museum of Flying in Santa Monica. Our main sponsor for the Concours event is Beverly Hills Porsche. Your membership in PCA also entitles you to attend events anywhere in PCA nationwide. For example, twice each year in the spring and in the fall, San Diego Region has a Performance Driving School. Anyone can participate to learn what you and your car can do in a controlled environment, with an instructor to show you how it is done properly. PCA Zone 8 events throughout Southern California are posted on the calendar at www.zone8.org. We also include some events listed for you that are not PCA events. One of these is the Steve McQueen Car Show at the Boys Republic on June 5. It is not a PCA event, but there will be a number of really nice Porsches there being judged, along with many other interesting cars. It is a charity event. You will see many PCA members in attendance, too. We are also invited to participate in the BMW CCA events as their guests. Their website has details at bmwcca.org. Please contact me at rblaesi@sbcglobal.net if you have questions.

I continue to be impressed by the enthusiasm of our members, in our attendance at our events, and our participation on our social media pages.

A PCA-LA Weekend in Santa Ynez Valley

What a weekend it was! On March 20, PCA-LA region members ventured up the coast to the Santa Ynez wine country for a weekend packed with events that had been meticulously planned by Board Member Art Yuter and his wife Roni. From wine and olive oil tastings at vineyards and farms, to both gourmet and casual lunches and dinners, capped off by an exclusive visit to an Arabian horse farm, we were well entertained! 6

By: Christopher W. McGranahan, Treasurer, PCA-LA Art and Roni Yuter love the Santa Ynez Valley and know it well, and this showed in their plans for the 38 of us for the weekend.

Our first group event was a trip to Global Gardens for an olive oil tasting just before sunset on Friday afternoon.

On Friday afternoon we went in caravan to Global Gardens for a private olive oil tasting. The favorite one in our car was the blood orange. Everyone else also seemed to like the tasting as there was a long line at the cash register.

The next day, Saturday, we caravanned through the vineyards, valleys and hills of greater Santa Ynez Valley. It was like stepping back into early California. The remote roads - Alisos and Foxen Canyons - were well paved and twisty enough to be interesting, yet not so twisty as to generate any complaints from co-drivers. The views were fantastic, there was really no traffic and, as some found out, no gas stations either. It was such a good drive that I was able to ignore a minor Check Engine warning (dealing with emissions) and stay in good humor.

Our lunch stop was in Los Alamos at the 1880 Union Hotel (rumored to be owned by Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell) for a catered buffet lunch outside on a beautiful lawn area. The head chef is from Argentina and served us several delicious tapas.

Photos, above and below, by Chris McGranahan

The highlight of the weekend was a long drive through the hills and valleys from Solvang, past Los Olivos, to the small western town of Los Alamos.

On our way back to Solvang we were treated to a private wine tasting or tour at Sunstone Winery. Back in Solvang we had an excellent (and social) dinner at Hotel Corque.

Sunday’s highlight was a private tour of an Arabian horse ranch (Haras de Cárdenas) where the owners and staff put several of their magnificent stallions through their paces right in front of us.

At end of the weekend, the consensus was,” Let’s do this again!” ■

We were treated to a wine tasting at the Sunstone Winery, which resembled a small stone fortress, complete with wine caves.

Half of our group took a tour of the grounds of the winery, while the other half attended a curated tasting of the top vintages currently pressed by the winery, along with some olive oil and aged Balsamic vinegar.

After a drive, we lunched and explored the old town of Los Alamos, which resembles a movie set from the Old West. There was a general store, a historic gas station, and several art and antique shops. Goldie Hawn and husband Kurt Russell reputedly own the 1880 Union Hotel in Los Alamos, where we enjoyed an al fresco lunch in its patio and gardens. The hotel was the gem of the town, with a Victorian-style interior and a Western bar that made you think Clint Eastwood might walk in at any moment, with a gun in his hip holster.

Spring into Spring PCA-LA Run to the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve By: Joseph Shubitowski, Membership Director, PCA-LA On Saturday, March 21st, PCA-LA members met in Valencia to make the splendid drive through the canyons up to Lancaster, to see the poppies and wildflowers at the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve. The early morning drive up the 405/5 was intensely foggy – so foggy that one could hardly see two car lengths ahead. As we crested the Newhall Pass, the fog dissipated and the day became sunny and crisp. Drivers and passengers of 21 Porsches sipped coffee as we prepared to depart Valencia and head through Bouquet Canyon towards the poppy fields in Lancaster.

Poppy Photos courtesy of Russell Bailey, PCA-LA Member Morning suburban traffic broke nicely as we headed north on a spirited drive arriving at the natural reserve before the crowds. The previous week’s weather had severely damaged the flowers on east and south facing slopes, but the backsides of the hills were covered in poppies and wild flowers of all sorts of colors and varieties. On the return trip through San Francisquito Canyon as we wound our way back to Los Angeles, we passed by patches of vibrant poppies that had been protected from the harsh sun by the canyon walls. A very nice start to the weekend was had by all. ■

Tech Day hosted by Haas Entertainment

The event, held by PCA-LA in conjunction with the Mercedes-Benz Club, featured Jeff Haas, Todd Liberman Auto Detail, Aero Products, Crayford Coachworks Sean McMullan, and Beverly Hills Porsche, among others by Harry Kraushaar, PCA-LA Board Member

Photos by Brianna Becker

On April 18, 2015, our region was invited to attend a Tech Day organized by the Mercedes-Benz Club of America, Los Angeles. The event, held at Haas Entertainment, an entity that builds and installs highend home and automotive sound and video systems, was great. It provided an opportunity for us to meet members of the Mercedes club and to learn about auto detailing and paintless dent removal. When dents happen, the original paint and bodywork on our cars cannot be easily replicated. The purpose of the event was to teach us how to correct small dents and preserve bodywork without painting the car through less expensive repairs, so that our cars will retain a higher resale value.

14

Along with dings, improper washing or waxing can also ruin paint. Todd Liberman, who provides fine automotive detailing services, discussed ways to keep the exteriors and interiors of our cars clean between washes, in order to minimize unnecessary wear and tear.

Aero, which provides premium aircraft and car detailing products and is one of the sponsors of our Concours, discussed their product line of waterless products that have been designed for the aerospace industry. Given the drought we have in California, I was looking for some waterless products, so I bought some from them. I have used them twice since the event, and I am really impressed with the ease of application and the results I have achieved.

PORSCHERAMA | 6/2015 Left: Jeff Haas, owner and CEO of Haas Entertainment described the audio and video solutions he provides for homes, vehicles and businesses. We were also treated to a demo in his movie theater with state of the art audio and video technology that he provides for his clients’ home theater systems. In addition to home and automotive entertainment solutions, Haas provides security, home networking, and home automation products.

As good as the waterless discussion was, the highlight of the day was THE PAINTLESS DENT REMOVAL DEMONSTRATION! I had never seen a demonstration of this process before, and it was truly amazing. Using a creative light source, a set of golf club-like tools, and the touch of a masseuse, Sean McMullan of Crayford Coachworks removed a dent without disturbing the paint, right before our eyes. Sean has worked with car bodies for years, and he is a true craftsman in this area. He is also quite good at discussing and demonstrating his process. Metal speaks to him and he can coax it back into shape in the most subtle of ways.

Below: Beverly Hills Porsche rep Nathan White described to us the guts and glory of the new 911 Carrera GTS!

If you get the chance and if we have another demonstration by him, you owe it to yourself to see it. At a minimum, just be aware that services like this exist and can save you lots of money and aggravation in certain situations.â–

What is Rennsport Reunion V? Rennsport Reunion V will take place the weekend of September 25-27, 2015. Details can be found on Porsche’s website (www.porsche.com) and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca’s website (mazdaraceway.com).

All photos courtesy of Marc Bixen by Marc Bixen, Techical Director, PCA-LA The Rennsport Reunion V is the world’s largest gathering of Porsche race cars and race car drivers ever assembled. It is taking place September 25-27, 2015 at legendary Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in picturesque Monterey, California.

Rennsport II and Rennsport III were both held at Daytona in 2004 and 2007. Sadly, Bob Carlson passed away in late 2008, and as Rennsport Rennsport translated means “race sport”, or as we know it, motorsport. So Rennsport Reunion is the celebration of Porsche’s motorsport history. Reunion was Bob’s “baby”, there was rumor that RennsThe first Rennsport Reunion port III might be the last. But was held in July 2001 at PCNA and Porsche A.G. Connecticut’s Lime Rock came through and continued Park. It was the idea of the tradition that Bob started. Porsche race driver Brian Redman and Porsche Cars Rennsport Reunion IV was moved to the west coast to Monterey’s North America (PCNA) press Laguna Seca Raceway, and immediately became a huge success, with spokesman Bob Carlson. attendance significantly above that of Daytona. The idea was very well received, and although Bob and Brian didn’t know it at the time, Rennsport was to become legendary. As Lime Rock is a relatively small venue, Porsche decided to move Rennsport Reunion II to the iconic Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Florida. Another reason for the move was Daytona’s history in the FIA World Endurance Championship.

16

Each Rennsport Reunion features many of the most iconic Porsche race cars, from 550 spyders and RS 60/61’s, to grand prix cars, to 906’s, 908’s, 917’s, 956’s, 962’s, RS Spyders, etc.

Porsche virtually empties out the factory museum for this event, and with the large number of surviving Porsche race cars, Rennsport Reunion showcases different cars each time.

This year, Porsche will also bring the latest 911RSR and 919 Hybrid. And if you like the “hardware”, you’ll also like the “software”, and by software I mean EVERY current Porsche factory driver, as well as every one of Porsche’s “Living Legends” drivers. Ever want to meet Brian Redman, Derek Bell, Richard Attwood, Vic Elford, Patrick Long, Hurley Hayward, etc.? Well, they’ll all be there, signing autographs, telling stories, and driving all the legendary cars in attendance.

PORSCHERAMA | 6/2015

Rennsport Reunion is an event not to be missed. Hope to see you there. Marc Bixen About the author: Marc is Technical Director for the Los Angeles Region of the Porsche Club of America and owner of Southern California’s premier Porsche independent service facility Red Line Service. Marc has attended Rennsport Reunion II,III, and IV, and will, of course, be at Rennsport Reunion V. Additionally, Marc prepared and supported Porsches at various Rennsport Reunions, including 911’s, 906’s, 908’s, and the 2011 Rennsport Reunion IV “Race Car Concours”-winning 1973 Martini RSR R5.

Additionally, the car parks contain almost as much eye candy as the paddock. If Porsche built it, it will be there.

California Festival of Speed A Speed Enthusiast’s Dream Weekend

by Brianna Becker, Vice President, PCA-LA

All photos by Brianna Becker

“A speed enthusiast’s dream weekend” was the description of California Festival of Speed offered by PCA Zone 8, who hosted the weekend. And this year’s California Festival of Speed at the Auto Club Speedway on April 10-12 2015 certainly lived up to its title! The weekend was organized and hosted by Porsche Club of America’s Zone 8, which comprises 13 regions in the southwestern United States, encompassing Southern California, Arizona and Southern Nevada. With the most motorsport driven events to all come together in one place, the California Festival of Speed is the largest Porsche event in the Southwest. This year’s California Festival of Speed included a club race, time trials, a swap meet, a Porsche corral, Porsches for sale, a Porsche GT timeline display, a vendor row, a concours, an autocross, parade laps, and more. There was something special in the air. If you arrived in your own Porsche, you instantly felt like you belonged.

18

Alongside the paddocks filled with impressive Porsche racing stock, there were numerous street cars lined up to test the track in the Parade.

Lighter, More Economical, Faster: the New 911 GT3 R

As we waited for our turn on the track, the buzz of the cars doing time trials on the track howled around us, and we caught glimpses that were mere flashes of the race cars as they flew by.

STUTTGART. May 15, 2015/ Porsche AG. Based on the 911 GT3 RS production sports car, Porsche has designed a customer sport race car for GT3 series around the world: The 911 GT3 R. In developing the more than 368 kW (500 hp) racing 911, special attention was paid to lightweight design, better aerodynamic efficiency, reducing consumption, and improved handling. Powering the new 911 GT3 R is a cutting-edge four-liter flat-six unit which is largely identical to the high-performance production engine of the road-legal 911 GT3 RS.
