So, instead of racing, we decided to focus on our family...specifically on those families that have more than one member racing in the club. When Andrew Weyman asked for a number, John Momeyer gave him quite a list of families that fall into this category. Subsequently, you’ll get to know a little more about the Moores (Darin and Ryan) in this issue. In the future we plan on featuring some of the others. Also, through the eyes of Steve Eisler, we get a breakdown of his weekend experience at the DK Racing School at Willow Springs and Mack Stevens tells us what it was like getting introduced to the POC. Darin and Ryan Moore might be father and son separated by twenty-nine years but they are closer than any father and son could possibly hope to be. POC members since 2016, Darin and Ryan can be seen on the track, in the hot pit, in the paddock or climb ing the bleachers wearing a headset, calling the race for one another. Prior to joining POC, both car enthusiasts put their “knucklehead” skills together and built a Shelby Cobra from a kit. They joined the PCA and began auto-crossing. Tempted to step up their game and not trusting their Cobra kit assembly skills, Ryan bought a 5.0 liter Ford Mustang and Darin unlocked the door to his new 996 Porsche Turbo. They ran HPDE events together for a while and spotted our POC booth at a Festival of Speed event. Stepping up to the booth, they were greeted by John Gordon, Ron Palmer and an unknown third POC member (me?). It didn’t take long for the Moores to sign up for their first free POC event.

When I asked John Momeyer for a list of POC members who had a spouse, son, daughter, partner or blood relative who also drove at our events, the list he provided was surprising. It included: Behr & Bayan Salehi Mickey & Riley Giacomazzi

Jim & Regan Steedman

The original plan was to buy a GT3 and share the car as they continued to develop their skills and move up to Cup Racing. Realizing that the wear and tear on a GT3 driven by both, as well as the challenging logistics involved, it just wouldn’t be practical. Ryan bought a Cayman and set out to crush as many track records as possible. Pedal to the metal, he did it. The Racers Clinic was a blast for them both. Ryan bought a Spec Boxster and was eager to step up his game. “Driving side-by-side through T8 at Willow with my dad was thrilling,” Ryan recalled. He also shared that he had driven with Speed Ventures and other groups but there was nowhere near the level of camaraderie that exists at a POC event. “My fiancé, Katie Shortill, and I have become close friends with so many members.” Katie’s passion for racing is powerful and she has been running their Cayman in TT. Ryan has earned a great reputation as being one of the most well-respected BSR drivers in the Orange group. Fa ther and son recently teamed up for the 2022 Tribute to LeMans race and battled hard from day into night.

Darin and Ryan are massive F1 fans and enjoy listening to the spotter’s radio transmissions with their drivers during F1 races. Darin told me that when they call a race for one another, father and son use F1 lingo. Their radio communication is precise and valuable. Recently, Jim Salzer told Darin that seasoned pro Craig Stanton was available to get on the radio with Darin for his race. Respectfully, Darin took a pass. Ryan called the race for him. As competitive as Ryan is on the track, he’s extremely invested in helping his dad do his best.

Driver development happened quickly. Darin remembers that Brad Keegan instruct ed him at the Streets of Willow. Ryan Time Trialed in his Mustang for three years.

When a black flag comes out, being on the radio can be unnerving. At Sonoma, Darin lost power between blind turns T2 and T3 when his kill switch wiggled loose. No power meant no radio to reassure Ryan that all was okay. When Ryan saw everyone but his dad on the track, Ryan found himself sprinting around every possible turn trying to catch sight of his teammate. Dad was safe and sound. Ryan lost a few ounces.

Darin recently acquired a ClubSport and is looking forward to driving it at Chuckwalla. Ryan is pumped to get out there as well. Although they live many miles apart, Darin expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to have two or three days a month at the track with Ryan. Not many fathers and sons, fathers and daughters or husbands and wives are able to enjoy competing with and guiding one another during a fast-paced weekend while driving a Porsche full-tilt boogie. Darin and Ryan are looking forward to doing it Moore and Moore.

16 DK RACING SCHOOL

It was 106 degrees in Rosamond and who knows what in Turn 9 on the track as we bunched up in preparation for the start. The green flag dropped, the engines roared in unison, and we were three-wide heading into Turn 1 at Big Willow. I was checking my mirrors, watching the cars ahead of me, and calculating where to position my car to safely get through the turn. I definitely did not have time to ask myself, “What am I doing here?” I am much older than the other students. My car is not eligible for POC racing, because it does not have a full roll cage, and I am still several seconds behind the fastest Time Trial drivers in my class. I have come to the desert on Wednesday and Thursday to learn to drive off of the normal racing line, to gain confidence passing and being passed, and to be more comfortable driving in traffic. Learning racing starts was just the icing on a delicious cake!

DK Racing School is run by POC Chief Driving Instructor Dwain Dement and FIA licensed Instructor Martina Kwan. It mirrors the format of the POC Racers Clinic, which also is run by Dwain, and qualifies as a Racers Clinic for those trying to earn their competition license. The biggest difference is the DK school is limited to 8-10 students, which provides much more individualized instruction and much more room on the track to practice new lines and techniques. The last Racers Clinic at Buttonwillow had 16 students. Another perk is that the school is based at Dwain and Martina’s ranch, which is located across the street from Willow Springs Raceway’s main entrance gate. After each on track exercise we retreated to the air-conditioned classroom/lounge with cold water in the refrigerator and comfortable seating, to discuss and evaluate our performance in the previous exercise and to plan the next exercise so that everyone understands exactly what we will be doing.

August 2022

Aftergoal!introductions we did a track walk led by Dwain, who has over 100,000 laps on the track. He reviewed the proper line which most of us knew and described where and how to make passes. We then had a 20-minute warm-up, track familiarization session with point by passing followed by a debrief in the classroom. The next event was to drive the whole track side by side. We selected partners and carefully planned how we would switch sides of the track after each lap safely and efficiently. Martina paired with Jason and led the exercise to maintain a safe speed. In the next exercise we went 3 cars side by side, with the exception of turns 3 and 4. Again, detailed instruction was provided to ensure safe transitions through turns 3 and 4, and switching positions in your row. This was followed by a passing exercise

18

We began Thursday morning with a light breakfast, introductions and a discussion of the responsibilities, proper etiquette, and sportsmanlike behaviors of a good racer. Our class had 5 Spec Boxsters. Pam Susslin had the most experience in the group, having already completed 2 DK Racing School’s, many DK Precision Driving Schools and earned her provisional POC license in February. Kevin Sechrest had taken his first racer’s clinic at Buttonwillow in March. Alberto Abreu had taken his first racing school with another organization, and James Horvak and Matt Juarez were starting their first Racing School. In the hands of a more capable driver, my Boxster S would be faster than the Spec’s, but I fit in nicely at the back of the Boxster pack. The outlier was Jason Chin in a GT3RS that blew our doors off! Jason is a very polite and respectful 24-year-old who took his turns at the back of the field, held back to meet the needs of the exercise, and was very careful when passing us. Jason has aspirations to race LMP3, and I will be proud to say I shared the track with him when he reaches his

The first Start Session consisted of an Out-lap where we practiced warming up the tires, grouping for the start and racing from the start through turn 2. Then we repeated the same procedure four more times. The debrief emphasized that you cannot win a race in the first turn, but you can end your race there!

Following a hot, stressful, and mentally taxing day we had a wonderful, catered dinner followed by the highlight of the day, an audience with the King and his court! We had dinner at a large round table with a rectangular table set tangent to the circular one. Most of us sat at the round table and Martina and Dwain and several of the students were at the rectangular table so that we all were facing one another. During and after dinner conversations were priceless. We discussed everything from professional racing drivers, to headless chickens, to falconry, to training horses, to re-homing stray cats and dogs, to POC club culture. No matter the subject, the King, Dwain and his Queen had inspirational and amusing stories to relate. As an exmilitary man, I particularly enjoyed Dwain’s straight forward, if you screwed up you own it delivery. In today’s politically correct, don’t hurt anybody’s feelings world, I found his use

19 that was the most difficult for me. We were paired up and spaced out on the track. The lead car entered the turn and made a ‘mistake’ and apexed too soon which caused him to track out wide and slow to keep from going off track. The following car would see the mistake, take the inside of the corner and pass underneath the now slower car. The debrief of this exercise was as important as the exercise, as we had a chance to reflect on how that pass could be completed in an actual racing situation. Then we transitioned into Starting Mode. Getting to the grid on time, warming up the tires, lining up for the start, watching the starter, and, most important, watching your position and the position of the cars around you in the first turn.

20 of the f-word as an adjective delightfully refreshing! Add in some great stories from the students and you had a wonderful evening that ended too soon but we all had to be ready to drive on Friday!

After our Friday morning breakfast, we discussed driver reputations, how important they are, how quickly they are formed, and how hard they are to repair. We also went through racing start procedures again in preparation for our first of four on track race start sessions. We started with an Out-lap to warm the tires, did a normal start, raced through turn 6, changed starting positions and formed for another start. We practiced 6 starts in this session. In session 2 we practiced gridding in the pre-grid area, going to the start line, the Out-lap and then a race start. This time we raced a full lap and a half before coming to the hot pit and going out for another Out-lap and a new start. At the end of the session, we practiced going to the impound area at the end of the race where Martina stood waiting in her official yellow and black POC Competition Committee shirt and red and white POC cap. The third session had just one start and 5 hot laps with passing. The final session was an Australian Pursuit, with me, the slowest person on the pole, and Jason being handicapped by starting many seconds after the Boxster’s.

When we finished our last debrief, Martina presented medals to the first three finishers, as she had in the 3 previous sessions, and Dwain presented DK Racing School Certificates of Completion to each of us along with some words of praise and encouragement. We took some group pictures, loaded the cars and headed home.

After each session we debriefed, asked each other questions regarding the passes that had been made and cooled off. Martina and Dwain commented on what they had observed and gave detailed procedures for the next exercise. Since most of us would be driving at Auto Club Speedway in 2 weeks, Martina used a track map to show where the various shops were pitted in the garage area, where to grid, and where to go for impound at the conclusion of a race. Any graduate of the DK Racing School will know what to expect, where to go, and what procedures will be in effect when they go to their first POC race!

I have had several days to reflect on my DK experience and to ponder the question that I could not answer at the beginning of this article, “What am I doing here?”. The answer is, “Having an absolute blast!”. In my first five years of AX and TT participation, I was always asked if I was having fun. I was having fun but it was tempered by checking the timed results to see if there was anyone on the list that was slower than me. At this event it did not matter how many times I was passed or where I finished, because I was working with a small group of great people who were competitive and supportive. The program was carefully planned to use each track session to build new skills that would be used in the future. The excellent instruction, the comfortable setting, and attention to detail made this the best track weekend ever. I can’t wait to get back on the track and apply what I have learned.

If you are a TT driver who wants to improve your skills, or you want to go racing and concerned about the size of the POC Racing Clinic, or want to get a half or full provisional racing dot before the next clinic, I highly recommend the DK Racing School.

DK Racing School welcomes drivers from all shops. During this racing school, there were 2 Vali Banners, 2 Völlig Banners, 1 Hergesheimer Banner, 1 Vision Banner and 1 Grid Life Banner. The next DK Racing School is on November 9-10, in case you can’t make it to the Spring Mountain Racer’s Clinic. If you are a new driver or going to one of the Willow Springs tracks for the first or second time, I recommend the DK Precision Driving Schools held on Friday before PCA or POC club weekends as a great way to learn to drive the tracks properly and get a big jump on your competitors. There will be a DK Precision Driving School on September 16, before the PCA event, and December 2, before the POC Grand Finale at Willow Springs. Both programs and their settings are top-notch, the instruction - superior, and the DK care, camaraderie, and stories -priceless!

My Introduction to the POC By Mack Stevens

Around 3 years ago I started a new job with a well-known Porsche service center that also provided race support to several of its customers. At that time, I was also introduced to the Porsche Owners Club, as most of their race customers were members of this organization. I performed track support on race weekends and quickly realized what an incredible com munity the POC is. I had experience running Time Trials with another organization, so I was familiar with the protocol but never really felt comfortable there. I joined the POC after my first track support weekend and even though I didn’t own a Porsche at that time, I learned that you could drive any car in the club and receive coaching and instruction. I also learned that there is a wealth of knowledge in this club. Club race legends like Dwain Dement, Anders Hainer and Don Kravig are among the many seasoned racers that are open and willing to discuss corners, race lines and strategies to help you get faster and become a better driver. I have also gotten to know Nico Silva, a pro driver and race coach who is a master at analyzing data and providing feedback. So, when you have some free time between run sessions or it’s your first time to the track, take a walk around the paddock and meet the family. You will quickly discover the sense of community found here.
