Willow Springs Season Finale PAUL WREN

The Fastest Road in the West is an appropriate backdrop for the season finale showdown 2025. Mother Nature gave us a superlative example of fine winter desert weather, with chilly nights (and mornings) in the high 30s but clear sunshine and high 60s during the day, almost perfect weather for unimpeded track performance and decent tire wear.

It’s just amateur gentleman’s (and gentlewoman’s) racing of course but you still have to consider the season championship standings. In the big-three of classes, the winner is already a numerical lock, but the podium is all to play for.

WILLOW SPRINGS 12-25 In 991.2 Spec, it’s no surprise that Mike Monsalve has an unbeatable 219 points heading into this weekend. As a reminder, maximum points for the weekend is 40 in Red, and 60 in Orange with their three races. In the running for the minor places are Garret Wesseling at 105, Ana Predescu at 119, Bob Mueller at 107, Duane Selby at 101, and Eben Benade at 97.

In GT3, an equally dominant performance by Brett Gaviglio sees him sitting on 174 points, with Ryder Liu second at 131 and Jim Salzer third at 117. There could be some change though since Paul Wren sits at 105 with an outside shot at the podium after missing a weekend for a new knee and a new transmission. (This is where the author gets to grumble.)

The largest field, BSR also has a numerical winner in Rob Walker at 302 points, but the next couple spots on the podium are up for grabs with Nigel Maidment at 183 and Murray Walker at 197 but with no Service Points (200 are required). Everyone else is numerically out of the running due to minimum races or points tally unless Murray doesn’t get his Service Points, in which case Larry Haase, Alisha Wray, and Karen Robinson all have a numerical shot at the third step on that podium.

In the smaller fields the podium is certainly determined since there are less than four cars. Darrel Troester leads GT2 but Paul Barnes has a numerical chance if he earns some Service Points. In GT5 Will Durant has a numerical lock on first place, with no challengers. In GT7 Randy Bergum and Mike Porteous are both in the running but neither has any Service Points so we’ll have to wait and see. Spec 2.7 has just two cars, and John Momeyer has a 57-point lead for the victory over Vivek Hazari, but with a theoretical 60 points on offer this is not guaranteed.

But as they say, all the stats and past results don’t mean anything to the racing on the day. We race because there is always the possibility that we can make something happen despite the odds.

Friday practice dawned clear and cold, and most cars had a slow start. The slightly revamped big track has some new tire barriers and some smoother asphalt in T3/4/5 but is otherwise the great big challenge we know and love. Split as usual into Orange and Red run groups, more numbers showed up as the morning warmed.

Saturday brought the real challenge to light with transponders on cars and laps that count. In the warmup it was very chilly, and Red had a red flag to start the day when there was a mechanical just exiting the pits. The restart was uneventful, but times were not representative with near-arctic chill. Practice brought a little more pace as the day warmed up.

With the lock on the season championship Rob Walker did not make an appearance, so the rest of the field moved up a place with pole taken by Matthew Hately at 1:30.789, followed

by Nigel Maidment and John Krylow in Boxster Spec. Steve Town headed the whole Orange field in his GT5 at 1:26.789, narrowly missing that track record.

Red Qualifying brought the familiar names to the fore, with the track records under assault (maybe the last chance before significant changes are made to the track that make the times from the past irrelevant?). For reference, the current track records stand at: GT1:

The track was not that fast apparently as Monsalve took pole at 1:18.833 about a second off that 991.2 track record, with Bob Mueller and Duane Selby rounding out the top three in 991.2. Gaviglio headed the GT3 field with a 1:21.903, closer to the record but still just shy, ahead of Jim Salzer and Ryder Liu. Other fields were not close to their records but followed the pattern for the year, e.g. GT2 with Roland Schmidt besting Paul Barnes and Darrell Troester.

Saturday’s first Orange Cup race saw Steve Town run away off the front solo and lap most of the field. In Boxster Spec, the field strung out in the usual order off the front as per qualifying but there was a lot of two and three-wide racing going on back in the pack, into turn one particularly. The leaders, Siderman and Maidment had a very close battle for several laps, going two-wide into several corners and coming very close to contact. Siderman eventually established a gap. Around lap seven the blue car of Keawn Tandon slowed and stopped on track right of turn seven causing a waving yellow, then a double yellow, leading to some confusion as to whether to slow down, or just not pass, or just pass because someone slowed down? Some subsequent DQ’s scrambled the results on Monday following. In addition, a mechanical-off at the exit of T2 brought out the emergency vehicle, and the double-yellow plus 12

WILLOW SPRINGS 12-25 red cross flags neutralized the race from lap 11 to the finish for the most part. The BSR win was taken by Mateo Siderman, followed by Nigel Maidment and Branimir Kovac.

Saturday’s Red Cup race started a bit eventful, Monsalve in front with Duane Selby passing Bob Mueller to take 2nd, then Mueller sheared a half-shaft in T2 sending him spinning off-track backward, and almost collecting Eben Benade on the way off. Subsequently there were two miniraces between Selby and Monsalve at the front, then Wesseling and Benade for the last podium spot. At the end it was in pretty much qualifying order, with Monsalve winning over Selby and Wesseling to make the podium. In GT3 the qualifying order held, and Brett Gaviglio took the win over Ryder Liu with a very close battle through traffic in the closing laps, with Jim Salzer rounding out the podium in 3rd. All I know of the race I had to get from the replay of the live feed, because I had a fairly lonely run in 4th place for GT3, unable to close on Salzer but well clear of Scott Matz behind. Racing is definitely better when it’s closer.

Saturday’s second Orange Cup race was another great battle all race, and this time without the hassle of flags. Maidment was forced all the way over on the dirt at the start straight passing the green flag as he forced his way up the inside into T1. The whole field again very close four-wide and five-wide racing in the early going, and close battles two-by-two throughout the pack. Maidment and Siderman continued their close contact battle from the first race, and equally close were Kovac and Hately in a battle for 3rd. The race settled in a bit then Bob Chang had a huge spin at speed between eight and nine for a big dust cloud, but no damage done. In the end Maidment took the top spot (after Siderman must have been relegated for contact), followed by Branimir Kovac and John Krylow. Steve Town again ran away with GT5 and the Orange overall win. John Momeyer continued his run with 1st in Spec 2.7 over Vivek Hazari.

Everyone then moved over to Dwain & Martina’s ranch for a club dinner and the club’s Town Hall meeting about the year and the future. Results of the election were shared, which I’m sure you have read about elsewhere. Darin Moore won a seat on the board, and Steve Town is stepping aside due to commitments 14

next year, so Vivek Hazari will fill his seat. Congrats to our new volunteers and thank you incumbents! Track rental costs will be going up, so expect event registration prices to also rise next year. Remember it is a non-profit club, so no one is profiting from you, we’re all just doing this for fun (and the Board Members are volunteers!) The schedule is posted on the website, and rumor has it we might be going back to Laguna on the last weekend in July.

Sunday was another chilly morning but also another spectacular day. The last racing day of the year brought a certain amount of energy but also calm, since the work was all done except the final qualifying and race, and the patterns were pretty clear.

In Sunday’s Red Cup race, Mike Monsalve established an early lead but then with tire conservation and traffic allowed Duane Selby and Bob Mueller to get back in a three-way fight for the lead. Mueller had the advantage of fresher tires after yesterday’s retirement, and his attacks on Selby blunted his attempts on Monsalve. Good clean aggressive racing with some traffic assist but the outcome remained Monsalve, Selby and Mueller. The GT3 field had a close three-wide going into T1 but then settled into basically qualifying order, although Wren in 4th was more aggressive than yesterday and pestered Salzer in 3rd until he made a mistake on gravel left in T1 from Scott Matz’s spin back in the field (and retirement). Second time through the debris and a little too much throttle, and Wren moved up to 3rd for a podium on Sunday behind Ryder Liu and Brett Gaviglio, in the opposite order from yesterday. Salzer ended up in 5th after his spin and still clinched the 3rd place in the overall championship.

In the Orange Cup race, the start was delayed one extra lap under yellow flag to give everyone a good look at all the gravel in T1 from the previous race, and unfortunately in that extra lap Keawn Tandon again parked his blue car in T7, but well off the track this time so that racing could proceed. When the start came, Steve Town had skipped qualifying to start at the back of the first wave, adding a little spice to the first lap and providing some good on-board video for the live feed. In Boxster Spec the battle from yesterday resumed only without Siderman. In the end Nigel Maidment took the win but only barely, with Branimir Kovac 0.679 seconds behind in a photo finish with Matthew Hately just 0.037 seconds behind for 3rd. Steve Town again dominated GT5 and the overall field. Mike Porteous made it three in a row in GT7 over Randy Bergum and Matthew Welch. A late spin by Momeyer set up for a switch in the Spec 2.7 results with Vivek Hazari getting a win in their final race of the year.

Racer’s Clinic Update This December was the last Racer’s Clinic of the year, which was held under a new format at Willow Springs Raceway by Martina Kwan and Chief Driving Instructor, Dwain Dement.

The one-day Saturday clinic consisted of informative classroom discussions and on-track race simulation sessions throughout the day.

The on-track sessions are a great opportunity for drivers to learn how to build trust with each other.

Racer’s Clinic Participants included Osei Appiagyei, Phil Barker, James Bowe, Jerry Cheng, Moze Cowper, Sep Daghighian, Alex Maslov, Vianh Nguyen, Dominic Ong, Calvin Park, Michael Rosenstein, Matthew Welch, and Russ Murdock.

Our new POC Racers that met the requirements and passed the class were Alex Maslov, Vianh Nguyen, Matthew Welch, Dominic Ong and Jerry Cheng. These participants that passed the clinic and fulfilled the racing license requirements were able to race on Sunday. However, in the first four races, these new drivers must start at the back of the field no matter where they qualified. The remaining students that require more training were able to drive in the Open Passing Time Trial group on Sunday. Those with less experience drove in Time Trial Point-By Passing.

As part of the racing license’s minimum requirements, each driver must participate in at least nine open passing events and their consistent lap times must be within nine percent of the fastest lap time in their class.

Besides the on- track performance, each racer must demonstrate a thorough understanding of POC racing rules for passing, 13/13, flags, and racing procedures. At the end of the day, everyone enjoyed the clinic and left with valuable insights.

Martina Kwan: “It was challenging to condense our typically two-day POC Racer’s Clinic into one day with only four 20 minute on-track sessions.

At the end of the day, everyone did great with different experience levels and car classes. I used visual aids such as hot wheel cars and a large track map to explain various concepts, and everyone enjoyed the 13/13 videos.

Congratulations to everyone for doing a good job and to Alex, Vianh, Matthew, Dominic and Jerry for passing the Racer’s Clinic and successfully completing their first race starting from the back without incident. Remember, don’t be a hero.

Michael Rosenstein: “Martina’s teaching was great. I really thought the classroom training, particularly the videos played before the race starts was particularly educational. I would have preferred the class being 2 days.”

Philip Barker: “Very enjoyable day. Good people and great teachers. The in classroom was well taught with a lot of good examples that made the points clear. The videos really made clear the dangers and how to be defensive. The on track brought it all together. I appreciated the group because they are patient of all classes. I thought Martina did a great job. One day seems enough to give concepts. It would be helpful to have one more day of driving.”

Vianh Nguyen: “Today’s clinic felt like a very natural and free flowing way to learn fairly critical aspects of transition from TT to racing.”

Moze Cowper: “Ruthlessly pragmatic.”

James Bowe: “The Clinic was a blast, it was fun to get more comfortable being close to other cars.

I like discussion format over a lecture. I really enjoyed it.”

2025 Time Trial Championships and MARTINA KWAN

After some long-fought battles during the year, our 2025 Time Trial Champions have been determined.

While Steve Eisler was gallivanting around with his race car “Stan” at Buttonwillow with PCA San Diego, I was at our POC Grand Season Finale at Willow Springs and agreed to provide coverage of our Time Trial event. One of the things that I love about our clubs is that it’s possible to participate with both. There are many PCA San Diego members who also race or time trial with POC. I want to recognize Steve Eisler for all his contributions to POC. He created a database for the Time Trial Group and writes an article for Velocity about it every month. In addition, he has been suggesting having an impound for the Time Trial Group for the past year. I implemented the impound in both our TT Point-By Passing and Open Passing Groups in November at Chuckwalla and it was a huge success.

To become a champion in TT with POC, you need to drive a minimum of nine TT events in one class, have 200 or more Service Points, and earn the most competition points in your class. POC rewards those who contribute and volunteer with service points. Congratulations to the 2025 POC Time Trial Champions!

There were 20 drivers in Time Trial with recorded times on Saturday December 13th. Jae Lee took the TTOD in his GT1 with a 1:23.471, Bob Gartland took second place in GT3 Class with a 1:28.079 and John Armstrong took third place in GT3 with a 1:28.561.

On Sunday, there were 28 drivers, some were Sunday-only drivers, such as Tyler Cheung, Ruben Scheimberg, Major Mirza, while several individuals who were taking the Racer’s Clinic on 46

Saturday joined in the TT-Open Passing mix on Sunday. Jae Lee repeated his TTOD performance in GT1 with a 1:22.627, Osei Appiagyei took second place in GT3 with a 1:26.996 and Bob Gartland took third place with a 1:27.102.

TT TRACK RECORDS BROKEN There were four drivers with an RBIS score of over 100, indicating they had broken the overall track records. Stock 1- Terri Rossi drove a 1:29.559, Stock 2 - Bill Woods scored a lap time of 1:33.468 on Sunday, Stock 6 - Sean Taheri posted a 1:41.165 and in Stock 7 - Michael Gao posted a 1:31.357.

RACE PREPARED CAR CLASSES – BSR, GT1, GT3, GT5 and SPEC 2.7 There’s a difference between someone in a race prepared class driving in TT versus Red or Orange Cup Racing Group, which impacts track records. To drive in TT Open Passing, you require extra safety equipment for yourself but also your car, such as a 5- or 6-point competition harness, properly installed with a harness or roll bar. This applies to any of the classes, whether Stock, Modified, or Race Classes.

Once you’re ready to move to the Red or Orange Cup Racing Group, a proper roll cage needs to be installed, which is a lot more expensive and time consuming. The primary feature of a roll cage is more safety, whereas a secondary feature is to provide more overall stability and thus the ability to go faster. Other things such as aerodynamics and having a proper race suspension enable you to be more competitive in the race classes. When I switched from time trial to racing, it was not until Vision Motorsports replaced my stock suspension for race JRZ

suspension components and my stock small wing to a proper race wing, that I became more competitive in my GT4 race class.

Look at a comparison not only to overall Fastest Time as listed in the RBIS table, but to the TT Fastest Time or TT Track Records.

In BSR, the overall fastest time or overall Track Record is 1:30.153 whereas the TT track record at Willow Springs is 1:32.962 (which Riley Giacomazzi holds). In BSR, the greatest improvement was Walter Kaye who had never driven at WSIR before. On Sunday, he showed an eight second improvement from his Saturday time with an RBIS of 28.67. However, his best time is still 20 seconds from the overall track record and about 17 seconds off the TT track record. Chris Krull had the fastest time in BSR at a 1:36.482 in Time Trial. Note that he is already race licensed.

In GT1, the overall fastest time or overall Track Record is 1:15.862 whereas the TT track record at Willow Springs is 1:18.680 which Chip Romer holds. Jae Lee posted respectable times on both days. Another thing that plays into the equation is driver experience and number of years of seat time. On Sunday, Jae Lee posted a 1:22:627 with an RBIS score of 11.09.

In GT3, the overall fastest time or overall Track Record is 1:21.545 whereas the TT track record at Willow Springs is 1:22.592 which Will Wattanawongkiri holds. One thing to note is that Will has driven professionally in the past.

The third, fourth and fifth fastest times in Time Trial were in the 1:25 range by Paul Wren, David Fabi and Bob Gartland so these times might

be more realistic goals to aspire to. GT3 has traditionally been a very competitive class. The top three drivers in GT3 this weekend were Osei Appiagyei (in Will’s GT3) posting a 1:26.996, Bob Gartland with a 1:27.102 and John Armstrong with a 1:28.197.

In GT5, the overall fastest time or overall Track Record is 1:26.651 whereas the TT track record at Willow Springs is 1:30.292 which Steve Vandecar holds (Dwain Dement has driven faster than that in GT5 but it is not officially recorded).

Yasin Almadini really stood out this weekend.

I’ve been watching his progression for a year and a half now. On Saturday, he showed a great improvement over his previous best time from February, and on Sunday he achieved a 1:32.782. What’s not shown here is that he drove a 1:42.954 just a year ago at Willow Springs, our benchmark for lap times, and thus has an incredible 10.172 second improvement over the course of the year. This is a greater improvement than any other driver in TT whose put in 9+ events and 200+ service points in 2025.

In Spec 2.7, the overall fastest time or overall Track Record is 1:31:417 and the TT track record is 1:44.152. Deepak Chandwani holds the TT track record in this new class TT Spec 2.7 at 1:44.152, which he drove on Sunday.

Deepak has been driving most of the year in his stock Cayman class before deciding to invest in a proper race car.

I’ve had the pleasure of taking the Time Trial group under my wing this year. Time Trial (TT) is a competition series for drivers interested in running fast laps but not competing in wheel-to-wheel racing.

Time Trial is divided into two groups: Point-By and Open Passing.

TT Point-By Passing is a natural progression from our entry-level Performance Driving Series (PDS), which is overseen by Vivek Hazari. It’s for drivers who are comfortable being in a car by themselves (but can of course continue requesting a volunteer instructor) and requires a Snell 2020 or newer helmet and full-length pants, long sleeve shirt and closed- toe shoes.

TT Open Passing is the next step after TT Point-By Passing, but requires a lot more safety equipment, which a relative newcomer might not feel comfortable investing in early on. A firerated race suit, driving gloves, driving shoes, Nomex socks, balaclava, and approved 5- or 6-point competition harness, properly installed with a harness or roll bar are all required. Most importantly, driving in Open Passing might be a little intimidating for someone used to the Point-By Group since passing is allowed anywhere on the track, to the right or left of the car being passed.

A great introduction to feeling comfortable in Open Passing and understanding our rules and culture surrounding this being a no contact club, is attending the Racer’s Clinic. Several participants in our December 13th Clinic who were previously in TT Point-By Passing, including James Bowe and Calvin Park, comfortably transitioned to TT Open Passing on Sunday, Dec 14th. Michael Rosenstein and Sepehr Daghighian joined our group on Sunday after taking the Racer’s Clinic on Saturday.

This past weekend, we combined our PDS and TT Point-By Passing groups to accommodate the Racer’s Clinic sessions. We had an impound both days and it was fun seeing all the drivers mingle.

I took a personal interest in the TT group as I felt like the newcomers had a lot of hand holding in PDS and the racer’s get a lot of attention in the Red and Orange race groups, but there seemed to be a little bit of a void mid-level, the future of our club, the Time Trial group.

Porsche Owners Club runs one of the most organized programs in the industry. A first-timer with POC, but with a lot of track days with other organizers, Bill Woods exclaimed, “This was the best and most organized event I’ve ever attended.” What also makes POC so great is the people.

I wanted to get to know the drivers in Time Trial by name and what they drive. We started having TT Point-By Passing zoom meetings before our premiere event at Buttonwillow’s new The Circuit in April. Our next zoom was before Willow Springs in May, Willow Springs in September, Buttonwillow Classic in October, Chuckwalla in November and Willow Springs in December.

Being on zoom is great, but what do people look like in real life and what car do they drive? We started implementing a morning meeting for TT after the all-drivers meeting at Buttonwillow. But what really stood out was having an impound after the first sessions in the TT groups. Every time we meet, I ask everyone to introduce themselves and point to the car they drive.

We started the year with 20 TT Point-By drivers at our first event at WSIR in February and ended with15 at our last event. We’ve had several people move to Open Passing throughout the year.

CALVIN PARK – Calvin started with POC in December of 2022. He drove in the GT7 class until he switched to BSR in 2025. He participated in his first Racer’s Clinic on Saturday December 13th and graduated into TT-Open Passing on Sunday December 14th.

MIKE AVITT – 2025 TT M2 Champion and ANGELA AVITT – 2025 TT M2 2nd Place – I met Mike and Angela Avitt almost nine years ago at a PCA San Diego Event at Chuckwalla. I remember that weekend clearly as I blew my transmission in my then still street legal 997.2 911 named Firehorse. Sadly, Angela and her husband Mike are retiring from the racetrack after this season.

Angela drives a white 2022 992 GT3 in M2. She has been a PCA San Diego Region Member since 1994 and started driving track events in 2005 from Autocross to Time Trial. Her husband Mike 52

drove with the POC in the late 90s to early 2000s and after a break, came back to POC in 2020.

They were doing events with both clubs but more events with POC. She liked everything about the POC, the people and the way they timed events each day. Three chances per day to get your best time are very fun. I love seeing husbands and wives at the racetrack. Mike and Angela achieved the M2 podium for multiple years in a row. Mike has the five fastest times in M2. We wish you both well and hope to see you again soon.

THOMAS KENNA – 2025 TT M3 Champion – Tom joined POC in late 2023 and has been driving his yellow 2015 Porsche GT3 in the competitive M3 class. He won the M3 Championship by 10 points in a battle this weekend at WSIR with Vianh Nguyen. This is his second championship in TT M3.

JAMES BOWE 2025 – TT M3 3rd Place and PRIYA BOWE – James and Priya Bowe are another husband and wife team and I love seeing another couple at the track, each enjoying their cars and doing well. James drives a green 2022 Porsche 718 GT4 in the M3 class and he was able to secure the 2025 TT M3 3rd Place in the championship this past weekend. He’s always been into cars, and his grandfather was a professional driver and later supported race teams. One of the conditions of buying his GT4 was that he was required (by his wife Priya) to actually go out and use it. He did his first time trial at Willow Springs in 2023 and the rest is history. James told me, “It’s so much fun to drive and we have made some truly great friends through the club.” James attended the POC Racer’s Clinic on December 13th and graduated to TT Open Passing on Sunday. His wife Priya drives a blue 2018 BMW M3 CS in Stock 3. She’s been doing great and set her personal best time this weekend at WSIR, an almost six second improvement over her previous best. I was happy to instruct her this weekend. When she first got her car, it came with a free track day at the BMW performance center. That was the first time she felt like driving was for fun and not just for transport. Priya started joining James at POC events sometime in 2024, after their twins were born.

Priya shared, “I fell in love with the total focus and flow of being on the track. Now it’s a glorious weekend away for us once a month, and we have loved becoming part of the community too.”

STEVE EISLER – 2025 TT GT5 Champion – Steve is a long-time member of PCA San Diego region and joined POC in 2021 at our California Festival of Speed at Auto Club Speedway, one of my favorite tracks (that is now sadly a relic of the past). Steve has been the TT GT5 Champion multiple years in a row and is a regular contributor to Velocity magazine with his TT summary using a database he developed called the RBIS – Record Based Improvement Score. Please see the article in this issue that I wrote on Steve’s behalf as he was competing in his final round of the PCA SDR championships at Buttonwillow this past weekend. We love seeing Steve and his wife Kathy at the track.

YASIN ALMADANI – 2025 TT GT5 2nd Place – Yasin started with DK Precision Driving School last summer and then attended his first POC event at Spring Mountain in September 2024. This year, he competed in TT GT5 and achieved a well-earned 2nd Place with the nine events he attended. He set his personal best this weekend at WSIR with a 10 second improvement from one year ago. He also set the third fastest time overall in TT GT5 Track Records and is on his way to performing well in his class next year.

SEAN TAHERI – Sean started attending POC events last May 2024. He’s done some DK Precision Driving Schools and became very competitive in his silver Cayman in the M3 Class. He bought an S6 Class Boxster late summer and has been driving in S6 for a few events. He just set the track record in TT S6 this weekend at WSIR. DEEPAK CHANDWANI – Deepak has been attending DK Precision Driving Schools for a few years.

We introduced him to POC in February 2025 and he has been driving in Stock 5 most of the year in his street silver Cayman. He recently purchased a Spec 2.7 from Dwain Dement (my husband) at Vision Motorsports and has attended a couple of events in his new race car. You can read Andrew Weyman’s interview with Deepak in this issue of Velocity.

RICHARD DAVE GRIFFITH – New Member December 2025 – Richard drives an orange Datsun 510 in GT3 class. He attended VARA University a year ago and has been racing his Datsun with VARA. He attended DK Racing School on December 4-5 and we were happy to see him attend his first Porsche Owners Club event our Saturday Dec 13th session in TT Point-By Passing.

KRISTOFER KRAVIG – Kris rives a 2003 Boxster S GT5 Class car, which belonged to his dad, the late and great Don Kravig. Don was one of the longest standing members with Porsche Owners Club and it came with great shock to us all that he passed away unexpectedly on June 11th, 2025.

Kris has been coming out to the track since 2004 alongside is dad. Kris owns a Porsche shop in the Redlands area.

BILL WOODS – New Member December 2025 – Bill Woods attended his first event with POC this weekend in his red 2016 Porsche GT4 in M3 class. He has several other track events under his belt.

MAJOR MIRZA – Major drives a 2014 Porsche Cayman S in the Stock 1 Class. He has been a member of POC for a number of years.

KRYSTOF BIANKIEWICZ – Krystof started with DK Racing School in February and attended his first POC event at WSIR in February driving his red 2022 Porsche 911 GTS. He quickly decided the GTS wasn’t fast enough and showed up at our April Buttonwillow event in his new 2022 red GT3 competing in M2 and has been actively involved with both PCA San Diego region and POC ever since.

Rally Driving in the Rain

Rallying is one of motorsport’s oldest and purest expressions of car control. Long before manicured circuits and wind-tunnel aerodynamics defined modern racing, rally drivers were wrestling machines across gravel, mud, snow, and tarmac—often in the same event. The earliest rallies, like the Monte Carlo Rally beginning in 1911, were conceived not as flat-out sprint races, but as tests of endurance, navigation, adaptability, and courage. They rewarded drivers who could read the road, feel the surface under the tires, and dance the car across unpredictable terrain.

If Formula 1 is a scalpel, rallying is a palette knife—messy, expressive, and deeply human. It is perhaps for this reason that many say rally driving is the tai chi of motorsports: a discipline focused on flow, balance, and harmony with forces larger than oneself.

That philosophy is alive in the foothills of Washington State, where DirtFish Rally School has become the American home for this ancient, mud-covered art. Located in Snoqualmie, DirtFish sits on the historic site of the old Weyerhaeuser lumber mill, where buildings once used for processing timber now serve as classrooms, garages, and stages for instruction. Nestled below the Cascade Mountains, the campus is surrounded by deep forest, mist that rolls in like something from a movie set, and this week—record rain. Even by Pacific Northwest standards, the downpour was remarkable. Water pooled in ruts, turned gravel into thick slurry, and transformed compact earth into shifting, breathing material. Yet that is exactly why DirtFish exists: to teach drivers how to understand terrain that is constantly changing.

Just a few minutes from the DirtFish campus is one of Washington’s most iconic landmarks: Snoqualmie Falls. The 268-foot waterfall drops in a dramatic plume of mist and thunder, especially powerful after the week’s record-setting rainfall. Perched at the top of the falls is the Salish Lodge, famous for its cedar-infused spa, wood-paneled warmth, and breakfasts that border on myth. The lodge—and the falls themselves—became legendary thanks to David Lynch’s Twin Peaks, which used this setting to create one of television’s most haunting and atmospheric worlds. Standing at the overlook, watching the water churn and roar, it’s easy to see why Lynch chose this place.

Snoqualmie radiates mystery and mood, the same ingredients that make rallying both beautiful and unpredictable.

DirtFish was founded by Steve Rimmer, a British-born entrepreneur with a background in aerospace engineering. His career in high-precision design and manufacturing taught him the value of systems thinking, adaptation, and human-machine integration. When he moved to the Seattle area, he sought a way to bring the spirit of rallying to the United States—something more than a niche hobby, something truly instructive. Aerospace engineering may seem far removed from rallying, but both fields revolve around managing forces, reading conditions, and respecting physics. DirtFish became the manifestation of that intersection: a place where everyday drivers, professional racers, and enthusiasts could immerse themselves in the science and art of car control.

The record rainfall this week made the experience even more profound. Gravel that had felt predictable in the early morning became a slick ribbon by midday. Corners rutted out, straightaways puddled, and the ground showed no consistency for more than a few minutes at a time. As our instructors often repeated, “Understanding the material—and it changes constantly—is the essence of rally.” That became clear the moment we stepped into the car.

Every lap required recalibration, every corner demanded humility.

Over the next few days, I trained alongside three fellow Porsche Owners Club members, Dominic Ong, Michael Gao, and Jerry Chen—all skilled drivers in their own right. Joining us was also Robb Todd, the principal of BR Racing, whose résumé includes multiple wins and championships in the Porsche Sprint Challenge West Series. Rob brought the calm confidence of a man who has lived at the edge of adhesion for decades, and his presence added a layer of professional focus to our group. BR Racing itself is known for crafting race cars with the meticulous detail of a Swiss watchmaker—engineering, setup, alignment, and data translated into speed and consistency. And then there was Greg Sinigiani, a character unlike any other—a blend of Italian restaurant punk and Zen master, a man driven by a deep understanding of energy and numerology as much as throttle and brake. Greg sees patterns where others see chaos, and his approach to driving feels as spiritual as it is mechanical (even if he learned to drive a manual last week). Watching Dom, Jerry, Michael, Rob, and Greg each interpret the same surface differently—analytical precision, natural looseness, race-proven discipline, and energetic intuition— made the experience richer and more multidimensional. Together, we learned that the car wants to dance; not fight.

The most striking lesson, for me, was the importance of vision. On the track, vision is critical—you look ahead, plan your line, anticipate the flow. But when the “material” is ever-changing, vision becomes everything. You cannot rely on muscle memory, because the corner will never be quite the same twice. You cannot trust the surface, because the rain shifts it moment to moment. The only path forward is to widen your view, project your intention, and allow the car to follow. Rally punishes tunnel vision; it rewards awareness.

Another mantra echoed throughout the school: chaos in equals chaos out. If your inputs are frantic—if you stab the brakes, yank the wheel, or mash the throttle—the car will magnify that energy. But if your inputs are calm, composed, economical, the car settles into a rhythm that makes even the slipperiest surface feel manageable. The architect Mies van der Rohe may have created some of the most beautiful mid-century buildings of the last hundred years, but his philosophy of less is more, it turns out, is also a pillar of off-road rally.

In the end, and after only a day and a half of the school, the conditions became so extreme that DirtFish ultimately had to cancel the remainder of the three-day school (only the third time they have cancelled in fifteen years). The DirtFish team decided to cancel not because the driving was unsafe, but because the rain was so relentless that the instructors themselves might not have been able to get home. It was a bittersweet ending, especially because the instructors were exceptional—patient, clear, skilled, and deeply committed to helping us improve, no matter the mud, the weather, or the madness of the surface. Even in the cancellation, they showed genuine care for both our experience and their own team’s safety which is why they invited everyone back for a two-day school in 2026 free of charge.

Despite the rain, and soaked to the bone and grinning like kids, we had touched the real essence of rally driving: a partnership with uncertainty. The rain, the mud, the changing material—these were not obstacles but teachers. In rally, you do not conquer the environment. You harmonize with it. And in that dance, in that tai chi of motorsports, you find not only control but clarity. I cannot wait to go back in 2026.

Deepak Chandwani is a relatively

new POC member who is rising through the ranks rather quickly. He’s the kind of guy you meet for the first time and want to get to know better. He’s the kind of guy you want as a friend. It was great to chat with him at Willow Springs. Here’s what he had to say….

AW: I asked several people if they knew where you were pitted and they weren’t sure. Each one independently told me that you were a real nice guy.

Reputations in the club are established quickly and very important. Congrats to you!

DC: Oh, thanks.

AW: When did you join the POC? DC: About a year ago.

AW: What are you driving?

DC: During Covid I bought a base Cayman. It was hard to find cars at the time. I bought the car out of Kentucky. I thought I should probably do some driving stuff with it. I ended up going to DK Racing School and had a ton of fun and learned a lot. Met some wonderful people. I think I maybe did one more that year and then maybe another one. I could only learn so much because I was only going once or twice a year. I couldn’t build on what I learned and develop. Dwain (Dement) and Martina (Kwan) kind of nudged me toward joining POC. I went to a POC event. I was initially apprehensive.

Everyone has been so nice. So supportive. So kind. Now I’m totally committed to coming and it’s been a blast.

AW: So, you started in the Cayman and you’re still in the Cayman?

DC: No. Gateway drug, right?

AW: Big time. Slippery slope.

DC: Dwain approached me last year at Willow Springs. He said, “I’ve got this Spec Boxster. You interested?” I was like, “Sure.” So, I got the Spec Boxster around June, July. It’s Micky’s (Yanoschak) old car. This is my second POC event with it. I did Chuckwalla and now this. It’s a lot of adjusting.

AW: And you’re running in the Yellow Group?

DC: Blue.

AW: What’s your daily driver?

DC: (hesitates) A Tesla.

AW: Which model?

DC: Model Y. And I have a ’97 NSX that I just can’t part with. I’ve gotta tell you I’m sort of itching to get something a little bit more fun as a daily driver.

The carpool lane stickers (on the Tesla) have now expired. That was the whole motivation for getting it in the first place.

AW: Do you have a long drive to work?

DC: I do. I live in Irvine and I commute to San Bernadino.

AW: Ouch. What do you do?

DC: I’m a physician. I’m an E.R. doc.

AW: Is there anything in your professional work that relates to your experiences on the track?

DC: That’s a great question. (long pause) I think the one thing that comes to mind is if I have a critical patient. I have to tune everything out and just focus on the task at hand. It’s like one step, then the next step. In many ways driving is like that. Everything has to be focused on the next turn, the next turn, the next turn, the next turn. Obviously, you have to keep thinking two or three steps ahead keeping the bigger picture (or track) in mind. It’s the same thing with a complex resuscitation.

AW: Wow. DC: That’s a bit of a stretch but that’s the first thing that came to mind.

AW: The idea of being in the zone, staying focused and doing what you need to do with split-second timing… I think the parallel is there.

DC:I think the other thing that comes to mind is that I love where I work. I’m surrounded by amazing people and it’s the same thing here.

AW: What are your current goals when you’re on the track?

DC: To slowly improve. Getting comfortable with the car. I think the idea of driving something without any nannies and really being able to control the car is my goal.

AW: I’ve been doing this a long time. I mean driving, not necessarily interviewing. I keep learning new things every time I’m on the track. About myself. It seems inevitable. Have you learned anything about yourself through your experience on the track that you can share with us?

DC: (very long pause) Oh man, that’s a tough question. (pause) AW: (laugh) I’m known for the tough questions.

DC: Well, that’s a good one. I think, again, this is a stretch. We talked about the ability to focus at work and the ability to focus here at the track. The idea of being able to bring that to other aspects of life. I think about meditation and stuff. I always tell people this is very meditative. It forces you to take everything out of your head and focus on one thing. If I could just bring that to other aspects of my life!

AW: Has it taught you anything in terms of your risk taking, your fears, your willingness to take things to their absolute threshold?

DC: That’s something I have to work on. By nature, I’m not one who will just go all out. One day I came out to the track, and it was all wet and I was just slow. I slowly ramped it up. I think that’s just who I am by nature. I’ve been trying to push a little bit more, and a little bit more. Like today. I’m slow. I was watching someone else’s video, and I have so much room to go. I need to step it up a little bit. Even three miles an hour faster. Slow and steady.

AW: Anything you’d like to add?

DC: I was just taking to a gentleman. I’m blanking on his name (Richard “Dave” Griffith). He’s got the Nissan. The old classic Datsun 510. He was saying the same thing. It’s just such a wonderful group. I think that’s the draw.

Developing friendships. Growing as a driver and a person. It’s an incredible, special environment.

AW: I feel the same way. The camaraderie is unique. As close as you get to people at work, the pressures and all of that, this is a whole different ballgame. It’s more about sharing the fun. Thanks for agreeing to sitting down and chatting with me. It’s easy to see why you already have a such wonderful reputation. I look forward to seeing you at our next event!

Ask Advice to Keep You on Track Dear Dr. Dyno, I had an instructor at a recent event who helped me tremendously. One of the things he suggested was to think about my car as being a beautiful woman and dancing with her.

I’m not much of a dancer. My kids make fun of my moves on the dancefloor. But I got into a rhythm and even though I imagined slow dancing, I was faster and smoother on the track. Have you ever done this?

Carson, California: Porsche Motorsport North America has announced the details of the popular Porsche Junior and Female Driver development programs for the 2026 seasons. The programs support eligible drivers in Porsche Carrera Cup North America, Porsche Sprint Challenge North America, and Porsche Sprint Challenge USA West. Drivers competing in a Porsche who meet eligibility criteria and are participating in open-competition championships in IMSA and SRO may also realize support from these programs.

to continue in North America dating back to 2012, while the Female Driver Program took shape in 2022. From the start, the programs have grown the careers of prominent drivers as they progressed through the Porsche Motorsport Pyramid North America, with many – including Loek Hartog, Elliott Skeer, Seb Priaulx, Parker Thompson and Kay Van Berlo – earning success on the world stage.

Each program focuses on driver development, including performance-based incentives in the form of tires and entry fee support. Seminars during Porsche Carrera Cup North America race weekends cover topics ranging from performance thinking to car setup and communications between drivers and engineers, along with access to Porsche racing legends Richard Westbrook and Patrick Long.

A two-day seminar with in-depth sesisons covering sponsorship activation, social media, physical fitness and mental exercises, and media training will take place for the third year in a row at the Porsche Penske Motorsport shop in Mooresville, North Carolina.

POC SIM RACING It's Monday night, I'm out in the quiet garage with my headset on. Small clicks and clacks can be

heard from the steering wheel and pedals as I begin to settle into lap three of qualifying. My heart rate is increasing steadily as I lean on the tires into turn one. The car is up to temp and it rewards me with a green 0.23 of time at the top of the screen. Snap, snap... snap - goes my paddle shifter and I'm all the way down to second for The Loop. Slowly releasing the brakes, my 718 Cayman GT4 rotates quickly, and I catch the back end with throttle and a quick bit of counter steer. Up about a half of a second now, I know this lap is fast and I fight for concentration. "Faster traffic approaching" my trusty Crew Chief App says into my ear. Jad Duncan in a GT3 RSR is also on a hot lap and I'm going to be fighting to stay ahead or maybe find a way where he can get by on the straight. I now notice my heart rate again as I nail the braking zone into 14. I'll be on the Hamilton Straight before he's out of Club so this lap is in the books.

To my eyes, ears, and brain: I'm at Silverstone. I'm here with 20 or so of my friends, and we're here to race. Sim racing tech has improved incredibly in just the last five years. We've gone from belt driven 'Playskool looking' setups to dedicated cockpit direct drive units that can slap the wheel out of your hands with 20+nm of torque. (Just like in the real car, keep those thumbs out.) For me the game changer was the load cell brake pedal. I learned to left foot brake in a front wheel drive rally car "in real life" participating in championships with NASA Rally Sport 10 years ago. Matching that pedal feel with the sim made immersion and transferable skills happen much quicker.

With the adoption of new technology comes the acceptance that sim racing is not only here to stay, but a vital driver training tool. Max Verstappen said in a recent podcast "Forget the go-kart," and agreed with the host who replied, "Go to the sim." Max explained "The go-kart you always have to slide it, right?

Because you have the axle. So, it always needs to be free, and it always needs to slide. A car is opposite, because the car for me always needs to be stuck on the rear. So, the whole driving dynamic is very different." The F1 champion seems to feel strongly that the simulator is the way forward. While some might argue that he has access to the absolute top of the line gear, his setup is a fixed seat cockpit: triples (three monitors), direct drive wheel, and load cell pedals. The best money can buy for sure, but not some secret unobtainable tech.

Years ago, my friends were over and we were taking turns driving Gran Turismo with controllers - of course. Since I grew up driving in games like this, the synapses are mapped, and my brain sends the same signals to my feet and hands driving a real car as it does with just a PlayStation controller in my hand. Not everyone can do this, and my buddy Andrew was really struggling with the analog controller.

Binary inputs, gas on, gas off, full brake, spin out. He was a mess on track. We got a hold of one the first Logitech wheel and pedal setups and sat him down in a seat from a Pontiac Fiero bolted to a bunch of 2x4's, and immediately he was driving 100x better. Lap times plummeted because Andrew already understood the controls of a real car and how you manipulate them. Immersion is a really important part of the SIM experience.

Pedals that move or vibrate in response to ABS or brake pad fade; seat speakers (Buttkickers) that let you feel those kerbs; fans mounted up front that respond to your speed; motorized seatbelt tensioners that pull when accelerating or braking; lightweight VR headsets; full motion rigs. This is all just here to trick your brain into thinking you are on the absolute limit in a race car on the track. Once this happens - what is real? What is a simulation? What does chicken even taste like?

When that line blurs you start to feel the excitement of starting in a field of 30 cars. You are racing against real people tonight, all of you in your tiny car cockpits with ethernet cords connecting them to the same simulation. The real world drops away and the feeling of danger, the rush of competition, and the fun, begins.

If you've never tried it, or you tried it "a few years ago," I highly suggest you ask one of your POC friends to try theirs or go to a sim racing venue and give it another shot. Consider an entry level direct drive setup from Fanatec, Moza, Logitech, etc. Look at adding the load cell pedal upgrade. A PC that is a few years old with a newer graphics card can get the job done. Settle into a few hours of setup and practice once or twice a week and join us!

My sim rig: Fanatec CSL DD base with upgraded load cell brake pedal. I changed the sponge rubber out for a coil spring. I added the boost power supply for 8nm of torque. I recently added the Porsche Vision GT CSL Elite Steering Wheel. The handbrake is a generic USB add on for rally games. The metal rig itself with seat is an Amazon pickup. You can see I added some threaded rod to lock the wheel stand solid. Windows 10 PC is an older Intel Core i5 with an Nvidia RTX 3080 pushing 1440p to a 42" TV. I had the PC, but you could probably pull this all together from scratch for around $3K. Kris Marciniak is relatively new to the POC. He drives in the POC Sim Racing GT4 class. In real life, he pilots a 2018 Porsche 718 Cayman S and has done three TT events with us since 2022.
