Note from the Editor:

Matt Hollander

January’s PDS event was a blast...actually more like a shake-up, as many old records were broken on a newly-paved track. If you weren’t there, you might want to consider paying the Streets a visit when we return in June! Read about the record breakers in this issue along with “Who Got What” at our Annual Awards Banquet. And be sure to check out Season 4 of our SIM Series. The winners of the first two races are already posted. You can watch the action on YouTube by going to our website for the links to all of our SIM races.

One thing we should all know by now when coming to Willow Springs in January, is to expect the unexpected. Usually that means the temperatures or the wind, or both. This time, it meant a new track surface, a few small track adjustments, and beautiful weather. It’s an honor to start the 2022 season with an article about our first event on the calendar. The January 8-9 Streets of Willow event was, as it usually is, a non-race weekend focusing on Performance Driving Series (PDS) and Time Trial Series (TT) run groups. In recent years, on a January and June weekend, we hit the Streets without the race groups and offer more run sessions to the PDS and TT run groups. This doesn’t mean that racers don’t show up, as a number of seasoned racers attended and found the new track to their liking too. We had 60 drivers in total that attended the event, covering car classes from GT2 through several street car classes. The PDS group had 18 drivers for the weekend and the balance was the Time Trialers and the Red run group. Joe Wiederholt started the weekend off with his Saturday morning drivers meeting and along with good information for the drivers, invoked his Exxon Valdez Rule. “Watch out for any signs of oil and get off the track.” Thank you Joe! While the Saturday and Sunday morning temperatures were low, the drivers quickly warmed up to the new track surface and some smoothed out corner sections to find the Streets to be even more fun than before. 8

Eben Benade, POC TT Director had the Time Trial groups out first and while there were a handful of cold tire issues, no major incidents occured. By noon, speeds picked up and lap times were quickly improving. Eben had 3 TT run groups, all with open passing, which included a number of experienced PDS drivers that were new to open passing and TT sessions. Everyone did a great job of dealing with the typical Streets passing challenges and brought home safe and solid sessions. The general consensus during the weekend was that the track is 2 - 3 seconds quicker depending on car class. The lack of wind and the moderate January temperatures helped, but what’s clear is that Streets is better, more fun, and faster. All the good old Streets elements are unchanged, such as the unique and challenging bowl and CW waterfall entry and braking zone (gulp), just a little more refined around the edges and more grip throughout the entire track. As a result the decision was made to create a new track records section for Streets, CW and CCW, in the POC Track Records section of the website. The prior records are now listed as Historic CW and Historic CCW, while the new lap records, during a POC event at Streets, beginning with this event are now listed as Streets of Willow CW and CCW With that backdrop, there were some standout drivers both SatPhotos: Luis Vivar urday CCW and Sunday CW who set new track records, shattering the historic records. In BSR, Scott Craig started off 2022 with a CCW 1:24.016 lap record, pushing the BSR envelope, and getting his car to perform up the CCW waterfall BSR challenge. In GT3, Matt Hollander put down a line in the sand with his new (to him) GT3 Class 911, with a 1:16.145 CCW, then bettered that on Sunday CW with a 1:15.521. I wonder what happens when he gets used to that car! In GT4, Chris MacDuff took the lap record time down to 1:20.442 on Saturday CW. Well done Chris, especially considering Friday night events (no details are being offered). In GT5, John Momeyer jumped into Don Kravig’s car and took it up a notch Sunday CW with a 1:23.211...a new record and bettering the historic as well. That’s a great results especially in a car that wasn’t even his. Check out the POC website track records, updated with all the new Streets times from January, and you’ll see the rest of the CCW and CW records in all the classes that ran for the weekend, from GT3 through Modified and Stock. In addition to drivers already 10

mentioned, congratulations to Time Trial and PDS drivers Brett Lamm, Tom Dobyns, Craig Booth, Brian Cooner, Matt Hollander, Robert Baird, Ethan Bentel, Eric Weirather, and Pamela Susslin. The PDS weekend was a good mix of drivers, mostly with quite a lot of POC PDS track experience. It was great to see many repeat drivers take advantage of a focused PDS and TT weekend and run with more track time. Of particular note, it was nice to see some young faces out there with their fathers, creating a truly special environment. Owen Perkins (Lee Perkins) came out for the first time to get an up close view from the paddock and the track. Owen soaked in all the quick turns and stomach adjustments from the right seat very well. Zachery Beale (Greg Gelson) has attended (I think) two previous PDS events and is really starting to put it together! Zach’s improvement between October and January is a thing of beauty. Georgio Adams (Mark Adams), at 14, made a debut with Jeff Shulem and Matt Hollander instructing from the right seat. By Sunday Georgio was moving around the track comfortably and taking in the whole POC experience. Anytime we see sons and daughters of our drivers taking instruction, gaining confidence, and enjoying the weekend with us old guys is really special. Hopefully, there’s a lot more to come! Looking back to 2021, congratulations to the TT and PDS Season Champions in their car classes. Time Trial champs were, Vivek Hazari in Modified 4, Mike Avitt in Modified 2, and Scott Hatcher in GT3. In PDS, Dave Bent in Modified 4 and Tristan Zafra in Modified 2 were the season champs. Dave, Tristan, Vivek, Mike, and Scott became the 2021 Season Champions in their class by participating in the required number of events and by meeting the service points requirements as well. Well done gentlemen and congratulations. A special thank you is in order for the numerous individuals who helped to organize and participate in this event. This would include our Board Members: Joe Wiederholt, John Momeyer, Eben Benade, Matt Hollander and Scott Craig along with a special thanks to Ron Palmer. A big shout out to Vali Predescu (Vali Motorsports), Dwain Dement (Vision Motorsports) and Dan Aspesi (Speed Gallery) for their involvement in helping so many people as usual. And Dwain, thanks for setting up all those cones, which takes a significant amount of time and track knowledge. We all appreciate it. Last but certainly not least, many thanks to our timing-and-scoring specialists and to our corner worker crews. They all did an excellent job keeping the sessions on time, and keeping the track as safe as possible.

2022 Annual Awards Banquet

Don Matz

At our 66th Annual Awards Banquet Rick Knoop, the guest speaker, told some great stories. Growing up in Southern California and being part of a race family, it was his dad who inspired Rick to get involved in racing. From his hot rod roots Rick went on to become a great driver quickly gaining fame in the world of racing for his multiple achievements. The ultimate for Rick, however, would have been winning the 24hr LeMans in 1978 in a Porsche 935 along with Jim Busby and Chris Cord. For anyone interested in watching, here’s the YouTube link for that ‘78 event featuring Rick and his California buddies: https://youtu.be/Y7g36MSltNc As Rick spoke, I was reminded of all the POC stories I’ve heard over the years then realized that my life would not be nearly as enriched had it not been for that red 911sc with its 7th engine sitting in my garage. Whether it’s through a 935 or a 914 we’re all related and this evening we sit here as one big family. John Momeyer in his second year at the helm did a great job of hosting the evening. Scott Craig, our treasurer reported the financials and the 2022 BOD was announced. They include: Eben Benande, Scott Craig, Matthew Hollander, Nathan Johnson, John Momeyer, Steve Town and Joe Wiederholt As a well-earned gesture Dwain Dement was given a life-time achievement award which included a life-time membership in the club. Both he and Martina Kwan were recognized for DK Racing and their support in bringing new members into the club. In the world of Autocross there were nearly 30 awards handed out to all of the drivers who won their respective classes. And in the virtual world of SIM racing, Matt Hollander recognized the first through third winners in GT1: Travis Brown, Corey Latvala and Michael Johnson along with the first three winners in GT2: Jerry Freckleton, Mark Rondeau and John Momeyer. 27

The 2022 Porsche 911 GT3 Approaches Motoring Perfection

36

2022 911 GT3 There could be only one winner Road and Track collected the contenders including the Porsche 911 GT3, Toyota GR86, Subaru BRZ and the 2022 Bentley Continental GT Speed, the first in the U.S., shipped straight from Europe. Nine of the year’s most significant new performance cars were tested, each making a case to take the top prize. Two days of testing ensued on the challenging 1.9mile North Course at Monticello Motor

Downforce, style, carbon ceramic brakes and six naturally aspirated pistons: The best bits of any 911 GT3 are at the rear.

Performance Car of the Year Club. R&T’s club-racing editor-at-large took three flying laps in each car to set a representative lap time, stressing accessibility, not outright pace. Every editor then took a turn to determine how each one exceeded expectations—or didn’t. There were two days of driving on twisty, forested public roads around the reservoirs of the western Catskills, reassessing the cars in the real world. Every stop saw opinions change and true contenders for the crown emerge. There could only be one winner, the 2022 Performance Car of the Year... the Porsche 911GT3.
