Wil l o w S p r in g s ... S e a s on ’s G r e e t in g s Darin Moore December at Willow Springs.....seasonable days, VERY cold nights, and a track that might be willing to yield a few track records, especially earlier in the day. What better setting to close out a successful 2021 race year? Some of us arrived Friday morning to test and tune, hoping for a head start on the weekend. It’s funny, no matter how many times we’ve been to a track, no matter how many laps we’ve run, we always have to relearn our shifting, braking and turn in points. Those who arrived on Friday hoped to get that learning out of the way before the event began. Saturday morning brought with it temperatures in the mid 30’s ...positively balmy compared to the 16 degrees we woke up to at this event in 2020. The skies were clear, it was time to go racing! Entering the event, there was only one class (GT4) in which the champion had not been determined. The points chase between Brad Keegan and Ana Predescu was separated by 9 points, in Brad’s favor. Wins by Ana both days would give her the championship. On Saturday Brad set a track record of 1:25.331 in qualifying, then won his battle with Ana in a hard fought race that saw Brad win by less 0.24 of a second. Even at race speeds, that is a very small margin. The Sunday race was another tightly contested affair, roles reversed, as Ana beat Brad by 0.20 of a second! Brad’s weekend results were enough to win the title. It was a great culmination to a year in which both drivers excelled. In other racing action, Mike Monsalve won both of the GT2 races, Eben Benade won both GT3 races, Anders Hainer won two of the three Spec Boxster races, and took second to Nigel Maidment in the other race, after starting from the back of the pack. Mike, Eben and Anders had already wrapped up 8

season championships prior to this event, the six wins between them was more icing on the cake! On the Time Trial side, Bryan Van Noy set the other track record of the weekend, running a 1:25.957 in M2 class, which is crazily fast in a street car. Saturday night was our annual Town Hall meeting, conveniently held at Dwain Demant’s property just outside the track gates. Dwain’s facility has been a huge benefit to the club, as he’s graciously allowed us to hold a number of club events walking distance from the pits and paddock. The Town Hall meeting gives members a chance to voice their thoughts, concerns, ideas and suggestions in an informal and collaborative atmosphere. In addition to the annual discussion regarding the future of the Carrera Spec class, some new and exciting concepts were discussed. Ideas brought up included night sprint races on select Saturdays during race weekends, a number of enduro races during the season, and a few night enduro races, in addition to Tribute to LeMans. Quite a productive result from the membership, considering the colored Solo cups in most hands! Photos: Luis Vivar As always, POC did a great job of running a fun, safe and exciting event and season, despite the continued existence of the pandemic. Hats off to all who generously donate their time and effort to make our club the best Porsche racing club anywhere. On a personal level, I am thankful I get to race with all of you in the red group, to get to watch my son (Ryan Moore) race in spec boxster class, and to have become friends with so many of you. Best wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season. I can’t wait until we get together again, at the POC annual banquet. Until then.....that’s a “wrap”. Happy Holidays! 10

Racing, Anniversaries, Photography and Women Andrew Weyman

The season finale at Willow Springs was a spectacular event for many, many reasons. I achieved my personal best lap time during qualifying on Saturday and racing was a blast. Some things made it even more special for me. When I arrived at the track on Friday morning, Vali Motorsports surprised me with a graphic on the rear window of my car wishing me and my wife, Terry, a happy 42nd anniversary. We got married on December 1st and for the past fifteen years or so, the season finale has been scheduled during the first weekend in December. So, racing at Willow Springs has become part of our anniversary celebration. Lots of congratulations were offered during the weekend. Another year, another milestone. By the way, I’m told the first forty-two years of marriage are the hardest. Something else that made the weekend extra special was a visit by some friends. Rich Reid and his daughter, Riley, came to the track on Sunday. Terry and I first met Rich on a National Geographic adventure in Alaska this past June/July. Rich is an award-winning photographer, filmmaker and instructor who has travelled the world photographing wildlife, oceans and open spaces. You can check out his website at www.richreid.photoshelter.com. Rich is a tremendously talented all-around good guy and wonderful father to his sixteen-year-old daughter, Riley. Before we get to Riley, a little more about Rich. He brought along some camera equipment and started shooting in the paddock, then repositioned on the bleachers for some on-track action. He told me shooting the cars at speed along the front straight was more difficult than shooting a Peregrine Falcon during a dive. This from a guy who has seen it all. Back to Riley. She had expressed interest in motorsports. That’s why I invited her and her dad to our event. A Junior at Nordhoff High School in Ojai, California, Riley’s passions include backpacking, travelling, studying various cultures, writing and painting. She also sports a beautiful smile. I introduced Riley to Alex Hainer, Ana Predescu, Aspasia Zouras and Karen Robinson; all of whom are fantastic female drivers. The women generously shared their knowledge, experience and advice with Riley. Riley listened carefully and asked insightful questions. It was very exciting to see. Riley loved witnessing our POC women in action. “As a young woman who has taken interest in the sport, it was so inspiring to see them out there proving that women are just as capable as men,” Riley said. “In the future, I hope to achieve my goal of being an accomplished female

28

racer and show young girls that their dreams are not limited because of their gender, just as the ladies at Willow Springs Raceway showed me.” Riley remarked that she loved being in an environment where people shared such a strong passion for what they do. Rich told me that on the way back to Ojai, he and Riley talked non-stop about their day and the dynamic women they met before she fell asleep in the car. It was a great day. The POC is a unique club that has so much to offer. The season finale was a wonderful way to end the 2021 racing season. Club racing at its best!

ross The Grand Finale! By: Dennis Wolfe

As the last car sped across the finish line in Lot 6 at Auto Club Speedway, our final autocross of the year - in fact, our final POC autocross EVER - came to a close. After three seasons with the Porsche Owners Club, the autocross division will be changing its affiliation to the Los Angeles Chapter of PCA in 2022. I know I speak for everyone on the AX Committee when I say that we are very grateful for the support of Ron Palmer and John Momeyer during our tenure here, and we enjoyed the competitive spirit, camaraderie and overall motorsport enthusiasm of the club. I know many of us will continue to run at future POC events (see you at Streets!) and we’ll also have some representatives at the PECLA banquet to close things out in style. Meanwhile, let’s give a shout out to some folks who finished the year strong at Auto Club, as well as some people that kept things going over the past three years. Our Fast Five included Michael Oest (54.316), Chris Humphreys (54.491), Storm Hagen (54.563), Richard Jung (54.935) and Travis Brown (55.102). Be sure to check out porscheclub.com for complete timed results and season Photos: Luis Vivar standings.

Our featured class this month is M2 where Cameron Breault drove his Camaro ZL1 to first place with a smokin’ 55.723. David Reiner edged out Joseph Gambino for 2nd place with a 56.871. Joseph’s 57.404 was good for third, while Jason Flaherty (58.014) and Rick DeHart (59.145) rounded out the M2 class. Special thanks as always go to our Series sponsor, GMG Motorsports and our Event sponsor Autowerkes. Their support helps make these events possible, so please do give them a shout if you want to make your car faster. Bruce Powers from Autowerkes was on hand with lots of free swag and his usual willingness to answer any questions about car setup. As the outgoing Autocross CDI and frequent writer of these recaps, I would like to thank everyone who has attended even one of our events these past three years. Ultimately, the drivers are the reason we do this. But more specifically, there are several folks behind the scenes worth noting who put in LOTS of hours to make these events a reality, and if you run into any of them at a future event, please acknowledge their efforts with a heartfelt thank you.

33

In no particular order, these hard-working and dedicated individuals include: Michael Oest, Karen Guthorn, Brian Cooner, Storm Hagen, Randy Gonzalez, Travis Brown, Thomas Frecentese, Tristan Zafra, Stephen Bennett, all of the instructors and all of the people who chip in to work Start, help with Registration or Tech. It’s been a blast running with you all. Thanks for reading these recaps, and keep chasing those tenths!! Signing off… Dennis Wolfe

Porsche News

A Look at Porsche’s Porsche makes an annual tradition of announcing its racing plans for the next season during its Night of Champions. This year, those announcements were particularly fruitful.

Porsche also revealed the program’s

first two drivers

Most notable are the first photos of the team’s LMDh contender, an as-of-yet unnamed car that will race full time in both IMSA and the FIA World Endurance Championship in partnership with Penske Racing as the team pursues both championships and major endurance wins.

a new GTD Pro challenger in IMSA, and a few executive hires. The fenders are notably rounded, making for a far more natural look than the 919 Hybrid’s boxy and under-designed rear.

40

2023 Le Mans Challenger The photos show only the rear half of the car, but they reveal the pontoonlike fenders and central driver compartment typical of a modern prototype. The fenders are notably rounded, making for a far more natural look than the 919 Hybrid’s boxy and under-designed rear. Unlike the long-tail 919, which ended with a rear wing flush with that bodywork, giant vertical endplates help the car’s rear wing protrude past the length of the car itself. This is more reminiscent of the 919 Evo, the record-chasing variant of the company’s most recent Le Mans winner.

41

The WHALE TAIL Project

THE WHALE TAIL PROJECT IS A PORSCHE RELATED ART WORK A TRIBUTE TO PORSCHE CLASSIC CARS AND THE BRAND´S LEGENDARY RACING HISTORY. Johans Lamic, the artist uses original Porsche parts and colors only, so each Whale Tail comes with its own 40-50-year-old road trip-memories. He reinterprets the iconic 930 turbo spoiler by painting it in the iconic racing liveries, while the idea behind the drops is reminiscent of the original aerodynamical function of the object. As air is a liquid, the drops symbolize fluidity and speed. Every series is strictly limited to 11 pieces, which makes it very exclusive collector´s items.
