And The Race is...ON

It was Friday the 13th, but rather than seeming ominous the weather at Buttonwillow looked spectacular with partly sunny skies on tap and temps over the 70-degree mark. Perfect test and tune day for POC’s March Buttonwillow event. The only problem from my perspective was that once again, I wasn’t there. It’s been nearly a full year since I added yet another herniated disc to my collection and usually I’d have long since been back in the mix and in fact I have raced on three separate occasions since that date. However, admitting this to my new doctors (thanks Anders) in January brought immediate chastisement and orders to absolutely not get back into a race car until either a much improved MRI or surgery. So the waiting game continues at least until May and now perhaps it will extend a bit longer. Regardless of my attendance, it was my turn to write the Velocity article, so I resolved to immerse myself in the experience virtually to the greatest

degree possible. In this day and age of Race Hero and racer social media perhaps I hoped that I could at least recreate something of the thrill of participation vicariously. Test and tune Friday doesn’t show up on any apps, so I was relegated to browsing social media accounts of various POC members. For those of you who don’t do Instagram, you should. There’s a vibrant community of pro and club racers from many different series and many POCers both past and present who share some truly awesome content. Big shout out to Martina Kwan for being early and online Friday showing the Vision Motorsports line-up all parked in good order awaiting the fun of the day. Posted only a couple hours ago, her pics have over 40 likes and a few comments. This is the content people come for. For those of us who aren’t there, it’s very comforting to see the big blue roofed building in the background, the familiar liveries of our friends and foes, and on

occasion the smiling face of someone we wish we were competing with this weekend. Some things cannot be replicated, however, there’s that smell that hits you as soon as you get out of your car, and then the sound as the cars begin to light up across the paddock in preparation for the day. A sound that transforms into something bestial and magnificent when they hit the track, screaming by like something from a dream of flight and battle and glory. Man, I hope someone posts video soon. I’m off to stick my face in the lawnmowers engine bits just to get something of that smell. Saturday came in more overcast, but no rain and the temps were cooler, so perfect for racing. The line-up looked awesome with strong participation across all classes – maybe only PDS a little light – and a full Racer’s Clinic to boot. Race Hero on my phone in front of me, I watched each session as the groups ran through their warm-ups. Racer’s Clinic times are obviously irrelevant as they’re clearly in the midst of the exercises set out by instructors Dwain Dement, Mike Monsalve and Duane Selby. Next up, PDS moves out and here we go. It’s a nice mix ranging from Spec Boxster to GT3 and including a variety of non-Porsche stock and modified cars in the mix. And so it goes, group by group, watching as the driver’s get themselves up to speed running the 1A configuration counter-clockwise. With qualifying you know the gloves are off and the lap times began to be reflective of that. In the first group for the Orange split qualifying, Anders Hainer dropped almost a second off his previous lap record for this configuration with a pretty awesome 2:06.7 with Brian Van Noy putting in a 2:07.5 for second. Feels like Anders has driven this track before. Can anyone compete with that? Oh S*i#!!!, here comes Nigel in the 2nd set with a blistering 2:06.6. Hey, hey, looks like we’ve got the potential for a 6

race!! Of course, in Spec Boxster, there’s always a race and when looking at the entire pack the times were all within 8 seconds of each other – and that on one of the longest tracks (2.9 miles) in the POC rotation. The Red Group was similarly close, which is pretty amazing considering the class range across the top five: GT1, 2 and 3 all within 6 seconds of each other. Meanwhile, back to social media. Hats off to Cali Photo, POC, Alex Hainer, Paul Bolton, and again Martina for keeping me in the loop with pics and commentary. While scrolling through Instagram, it also became evident that perhaps we didn’t escape Friday the 13th at all, as news of the Covid-19 keep intruding in the feed. Formula 1 cancelled not only for this weekend, but out weeks into the future. Similar stories cascading around

the world as racing comes to a halt. So glad that POC managed to get Buttonwillow in under the wire as this is the content we all need. The racing fix to cement in our minds the comradery, passion and excitement that at times we all take for granted. Back to racing, and in the Orange Group Kenneth Waterhouse takes overall in Carrera Spec with Paul Barnes (SCR) and George Meeker (GT5) second and third. In Spec Boxster, Anders pulls it off, but with tight competition from Justin Crickenberger driving Matt Hollander’s BSR in second and Nigel in third. The Red Group saw Kevin Roush (GT1), Loren Beggs and Mike Monsalve (GT2) on the podium with new to the Red Group this year Alex Hainer coming in fourth (second in GT2).

Following lunch, the second series of races start off with an Orange group repeat for podiums. That’s right, the top three overall and in Boxster Spec were exactly the same in the exact same order. I had to check twice just to make sure this wasn’t some weird glitch. And here’s the rub with watching without visuals. You don’t know position changes via the app until racer’s cross the finish line, so you’re always waiting with baited breath to see what has happened at the end of each lap. Were there any offs? Heavy battles? Who knows? I can only text people for their reactions and comments or wait until something shows up on social media. Maybe next week, we’ll have race videos up on YouTube, but for the moment, nada. (Note: Another problem with being so removed, it wasn’t until nearly a week later that I learned Anders was DQd for a love tap w/ Nigel. Stay tuned to the POC website for final-final standings.) Sunday results were a little more diverse. The Red Group saw Loren Beggs, Kevin Roush and Vali Predescu on the podium, while the Orange Group saw Justin Crickenberger (BSR) take first, followed by Mark Smith (BSR) and Joe Wiederholt (BSR). And just so you know, that it’s not all about the racers Walter Vazquez dropped a smoking 2:01.3 in Time Trial and Daniel Espinosa a 2:02.1 in Racer’s Clinic. Fast. Fast. Fast. And just like that the weekend was over. The racers packed up and headed home. Back to LA or San Diego or any number of places with the common factor being nervous people, empty grocery stores and uncertain realities about just what the state of California (and the nation) may require from us (the racing community) for the indeterminate future. As I scroll through Instagram I see racers all over the world impacted by cancellations and closures. Even the test and tune days at Willow Springs, while available, are impacted by new social distancing rules. People are nervous, but hey, 10

here’s the thing, POCers: You are drivers. You race cars...Fast, dangerous, amazingly high performance vehicles and you do it with grace, bravery and style. Your competitive spirit and sheer joy of engagement are awesome things to behold. At the heart of it, POCers are leaders both on the track and off, and with this comes the responsibility of sharing your bravery and positivity with those who don’t necessarily carry these as innate qualities. Lead by example. Continue to be heroes. We’re all better for your leadership and inspiration, so keep on pushing in all areas of life and urging those around you to something beyond which they think themselves capable. Until we race again, high spirits and good health to you all.

The VIRTUAL WORLD of RACING by Matt Hollander

It seems that all we hear about today is how we need to distance ourselves from others and to stay in-doors. I’m not sure about you, but I’m becoming bored and consistently looking for something to keep me busy other than work... 20


...Something that gets the adrenaline going while also having a social aspect, hmm.....well, for those of you that havent tried it, get into virtual sim racing. I’ve been sim racing for about 15 years (they tell me it helps on track). With the changing times, pro racers and amateur weekend track stars alike are finding themselves competing against each other in heated battles. Ever wondered how you would stack up against a formula 3 champion from Europe? A Porsche super cup champion? All of these things are happening as you read this article. Even the large racing organizations like F1, IMSA, 21


and NASCAR are being forced to go to the virtual world. So, how hard is it to get into the e-racing world? EASY! There are tons of companies that have come into the marketplace over the past 10 years with technology that is absolutely mind blowing. So, the big question...what does something like this cost? Well, I guess that depends on how fancy you want to go. Put simply, the lower end stuff will cost you about $2k for a full set up and it climbs from there. Things like motion and virtual reality help the prices grow rather quickly. I’ve upgraded my simulator three times now with every update being light years ahead of the last setup. I currently have a set up that is all Porsche. The steering wheel is a direct clone of the wheel you would find in a GT3R. The pedals are inverted to give the Porsche feel, and of course the paddle shifters are carbon. Get this, the pedals even vibrate under your foot when the ABS kicks in! I strongly suggest that if you’re sitting around bored and looking for an escape, this is for you. There are lots of POC members currently racing online too! Anders

Life in the Fast Lane Random Musings of a POC Racer

How is it that the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic, worldwide economic collapse and toilet paper grabbing thugs had no effect on our Buttonwillow event? I mean zero, zilch, nada. How is that? Some of the answer lies in why we race. When we eat chocolate, drink wine, have sex and laugh, endorphins activate our body’s opiate receptors and make us feel happy. When we race, it’s like doing all of the above at the same time. By the way, if you haven’t tried the all-at-the-sametime approach to those other activities, you should. Ask me how I know. It goes to follow that we’re happy at the track. Off track, maybe not so much. That’s why the Racers Clinic was packed with gas guzzling grins. That’s why the PDS Group was flying through the Esses. That’s why the Time Trial Group was executing passes with precision. That’s why the Orange Group had three thrilling races and Nigel Maidment beat the BSR track record by a full second.

That’s why Sunday’s Red Race started in Turn 1 with millimeters separating bumpers and ended with door-to-door battles across the finish line. There’s no doubt that there was a lot of good stuff to be had at Buttonwillow. Great weather and breathable air quality offered a refreshing respite from the elbow bumping and hand sanitizing rituals. The racing was extremely competitive and fed all those needy egos when things went right. Good-natured gloating was fun to force on friends. Trading driver insights and sharing race-craft wisdom strengthened our friendships. As of this writing, we still don’t know what the future holds in terms of upcoming events. COVID-19 has thrown a wrench into everything. New government guidelines are limiting gatherings and closing businesses. Let’s hope our upcoming event at Willow Springs can take place as originally planned. Buttonwillow was a blast.

A PDS Experience Musings of a New POC Student

At a highway gas station Saturday morning, I tore through my car for missing documents while mechanics and drivers prepped at the track. Coaches discussed qualifying strategy while I timed if I could make it back to the hotel for essential check-in paperwork. After recovering the folder, I arrived at the track, jumped out of the car and ran to sign in. I masked panic as welcoming faces greeted me. I signed in and realized the important tools for a new driver were the PDS wristband and a few enthusiastic responses. Turns out, the paperwork was unnecessary and I was early for the meeting. I was good to go.

ers navigate the track in a violently graceful dance at a breathtaking pace, and I was hooked. When given the chance, I mingled with experienced drivers. I met some of Vision’s team before, but I did not expect them to be so welcoming. As a complete beginner, I felt extremely grateful to be taken under some of their wings. They were always willing to share tips and invited me to ride in a cup car sometime. Thanks Jim!

After the driver’s meeting, I met Don Matz. We discussed my experience at Streets of Willow and the lap record he held there before “some [expletive] beat it.” I needed an instructor, so Don filled in. As we pulled up to the line for our first session, the novice confidence I gained at Streets took over. I believed there was a chance I could impress Don right away. I don’t know if it’s more frightening to be completely lost on a track, or know your driver is confused coming off a straight into a sharp turn. A couple laps in, I noticed 1A was coming up too fast. All I could do was sigh and roll past the turn in a straight line for the dirt. “Brake. Brake. Brake!.. We’re off.” A quick nervous laugh and we were back on completing the session. Don may have steered the car as much as I did, but the last laps went well. More humbling than going off track was seeing the orange and red groups set off. I watched the driv-

Most of my time spent in the paddock was processing Don’s informative debriefs before quietly absorbing any advice I could get from the incredible drivers, coaches and members within the POC. After session 1, Don gave me a quick classroom lesson that was immensely productive. Session 2 was a completely different experience. As I became more comfortable with my memory of the track, we gained confidence in my abilities. Braking later, accelerating harder and piecing together even one section a lap was exhilarating. After session 3, Don sent me out alone. The rest of the weekend was spent discussing laps, talking with members and enjoying every second. I look forward to quietly absorbing everyone’s advice as I learn new tracks, cut times and grow within the club. Thanks to Don, Vision, Vali and the entire POC for getting me hooked on such an incredible sport. My goal is to make it into a Boxter Spec someday, but for now I’ll start with managing my documents.

The 3.8-liter, twin-turbo, 6-cylinder horizontally opposed engine with VTG produces 640 hp. Breathtaking: acceleration from 0 to 60 mph takes just 2.6 seconds with Launch Control. Ÿ mile is also outstanding: 10.5 seconds. Top track speed: 205 mph.

Letter from the President Hello POC members. I wanted to update you on where we are with regard to COVID-19. As I sit here watching what’s going on in our world, I can’t help but wonder what the immediate future holds for our club. Like all of you, I want to race – but is that the prudent thing to be doing under present conditions? As of now, our April event is still “on” at WSIR, but we are taking this a day-at-a-time. If we need to pull the plug we’ll let you know. Of course, continuing to be a major concern is the number of people allowed to congregate in one place and the amount of safe distance required between them. We’ll wait to see what the powers-to-be say and then proceed accordingly. In my discussions with many of you, I’m hearing that the Virtual World of Racing is becoming more-and-more popular. What a great way to spend time in the comfort and safety of our own homes and “somewhat achieve” that rush we always get at the track. Check out Matt Hollander’s article in this issue of Velocity. Just an FYI. We simply want you to know that the POC is alive and well. We are planning to continue with our events as government restraints are lifted and we will keep you informed. In the meantime, stay healthy and safe. Ron
