A Message from our President

For the last 6 years it’s been my pleasure to serve as your president. During this time I have enjoyed meeting and working with many wonderful people. Together we’ve experienced great things and together we’ve grown. Everyone, especially the Board, should be extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished. This past year, however, has been extremely challenging. With the onslaught of COVID and political unrest, all of our lives have been affected. But, through the grace of God, we managed more than to simply stay afloat – our club maintained an active race schedule and we continued to prosper. Autocross, PDS, Time Trial and our Cup Series continue to grow. For the first time in many years PDS is now split into two groups. And, as we began our second year of Autocross, many of these drivers have moved up the ladder into our Performance Driving Series. I would like to thank several members who have dedicated themselves to making the POC a success: John Momeyer, our Comp Committee chairman, has stepped up tremendously by devoting his time and talents to the club. Scott Craig, as treasurer, has helped us to reorganize our finances. Joe Wiederholt, our Motorsports VP, has been relentless in negotiating for each of the venues on our schedule. His hard work has been greatly appreciated. Mr. Dwain Dement, as always, has been a great mentor and a great source for the club and has been willing to help in every situation. Nathan Johnson, our secretary, has not only handled our insurance issues but also managed to become this year’s GT3 champion. Don Matz has been a great asset. He not only serves as Director for PDS but also designs our graphics and communications which include Velocity magazine and our year-end Coffee Table Book. The board’s latest addition, Matt Hollander started our SIM Racing Series in 2020 when the pandemic

hit. Through Matt’s efforts we have been extremely successful in this venture. All of our SIM events are available for viewing on YouTube and because of this series, our membership has grown considerably. In spite of the pandemic we’ve been able to accomplish great things this year. We finalized our automated registration program in order to facilitate registration at the track and, with the help of MSReg, online documents can now be handled more efficiently. This year we managed to get Porsche Cars North America’s attention when they created their tiered “Pyramid” for racing. The POC was actually included as part of the first and second tier of the Pyramid, the base of which begins with Club Racing and ultimately leads up to Porsche Factory Racing. PCNA now recognizes the Porsche Owners Club as a major force in club racing...a great accomplishment for our club. Videos produced by Digital film tree and SKY 21 have captured the attention of many enthusiasts and our sponsorships continue to grow. I’m very proud to say that without all of you and the hard work of our Board of Directors this would have not been possible. As my term comes to an end, I feel very confident for the future. Our finances are much better than they were 5 years ago. We grew our club from near bankruptcy to having nearly $450,000 in savings. We’re a strong, successful, competitive, professional organization but more than that – we’re a family and you should be very proud. I have the utmost confidence that the POC will continue to thrive under its new leadership and my hope is that 2021 brings happiness, joy and peace to everyone. God-bless. Your president Ron Palmer

Chasing sunrise.

Passing 2020 and giving more than the usual racing room. Growing smaller and smaller in my rearview mirror. Throttle down. More distance. Ahh…there it goes. Out of sight. Sunset falls on 2020. I don’t know about you, but I’m so done with this year. Don’t get me wrong, there has been much to celebrate and to be grateful for. Yet, I’m left feeling the loss of the two things that are most important to me: my family and my friends—and that includes the camaraderie of my POC pals. Luckily, the third thing: racing, wasn’t completely nixed. Lord knows, the universe tried. Porsche Owner’s Club’s 2020 season started off with the usual excitement at Streets at Willow Springs for Time Trial and Performance Driving Series—doing our best to recruit the next group of addicts to our exhilarating sport. Moving on to the normal race season start at Willow Springs in February. By March at Buttonwillow there were concerning noises, you know like the ones emanating from your tired gear box, but even more foreboding. On my way home from Buttonwillow it was clear that we’d hit the tire wall. California was going into a lockdown to deal with rapidly escalating cases of Coronavirus. COVID-19: shorthand, COVID. It became the top word for 2020 with the most citations ever recorded in the 21st century. Great. What now? Figuring track events are mostly socially distanced I thought we could carry on. Nope. April at WSIR: Canceled. Tribute to Le Mans and WSIR in May: Canceled. OK…I was getting more and more bummed out. June at Laguna Seca, my favorite track, was sure to go forward, we’d have this pandemic thing sorted out by then. We agreed to follow social distancing protocols, limiting the attendance, our POC Board went to great lengths to understand the requirements of the new track management at Laguna Seca, not to mention Monterey County. Ummm…no— canceled for racing. Normal, gone again. Not everyone’s normal, but you know, our kind of normal. With my work as a business lender, I’d been putting in 12-14 hour days, 7 days a week since March helping anxious clients navigate the financial nightmares they were living. Yeah, you can forget about the whole “banker’s hours” thing. That normal has been gone for a long time. But dreams of Laguna had kept me going—

the promise of normality that was so needed in a world that seemed to be devolving by the day. While canceled races are not even close to the heartbreak of loved ones getting COVID or dying from it, nor the exhaustion of our medical first responders who have been stretched beyond what could have ever been imagined, all humans have suffered losses, big and small, and this should not be minimized or dismissed. What now? Photo: CaliPhotography So, it was with gratitude and hope that our season restarted with racing at Sonoma in July and carried through “normally” to the closing event at Willow Springs in December. We chugged through the calendar and found new challengers for top positions in all groups. Turnout was lower than usual, but we sped forward arriving at the last race of the year. It was a (mostly) normal year at the track. How refreshing. At Willow Springs, championships were at stake. Some new contenders had arrived to challenge the podium regulars. Drivers were intent on those final adjustments to get a bit more advantage. Tired cars with a season of being pushed to the limit barfed transmissions (I counted 2 BSR transmission change Branimir contemplating outs from Saturday alone), motors puffed and went silent, the his next run usual electrical gremlins played games, and bearings gave it up. Some of the most popular tools deployed around the pits were Duct Tape and zip ties. But people were smiling – OK you couldn’t actually see their smiles, but their eyes squinted and heads nodded. We were having fun and it felt so normal. No writing about WSIR is complete without a weather report and that can be summed up in one word: COLD. Yeah, really cold. On Friday morning before our open practice day, the outside air temp was 13 degrees. We jokingly debated whether we could put boiling water in our Cool Shirt boxes and tape handwarmers under our Nomex, as I gave thanks for the heater that is the BSR motor behind my head. Daytime temps were in the low 60s and turbos were happy. Tires were another matter and ensuring that they heated from the inside out was the focus of every outlap.

To get us back to normal, our Club Leadership has done an amazing job shifting to virtual driver meetings, streamlining the check-in process, and managing comp committee business all while following health department protocols. Kudos to them for the work behind the scenes keeping us safe on and off the track so that we could enjoy a sport that we love and get to wave to our friends as we vectored to our pre-session personal pit stops. Our PDS and TT drivers and instructors adapted to lead and follow on-track instruction and limited classroom time. This season was probably toughest for these groups due to elimination of in-car instruction. We’re not alone with this challenge and great information is coming out from our motorsports comrades on how to do this more effectively in 2021. Rather than COVID as the word for 2020, I’ve opted for “adaptability.” This is what we have all done in our personal and professional lives this year and it’s what performance drivers and racers do every time we enter the track. Taking in all of the information that we can absorb from every sensory input so we can make quick decisions. Using our vision to see what’s ahead to gauge situations and get the most out of ourselves and our cars. Race car smell is a fragrance only we can fully appreciate and it feeds the decision-making machine. Channeling our inner Nikki Lauda and feeling the drive in our ass, searching for grip and the 10ths of improvement. All of these senses are there to trigger our reaction, change, and adaptation to the “now.” This was my goal for this year and there were gains and mistakes. The good news is that this process is never complete and a new season is upon us so we can once again work to get it perfect. Eyes up, looking ahead to the sunrise of the new year. The sunset of an extremely challenging year is behind us and I find myself filled with gratitude for all of you and for my good fortune to participate in this amazing sport. The Green Flag is lifted. The 2021 POC schedule is inked. Even Auto Club Speedway got a reprieve for another year. I think it’s going to be a good one. 2021 POC schedule 12

“Friends don’t let friends early apex.” I saw this bumper sticker on a tricked-out Honda back in the day and thought to myself - now there’s a guy who knows the secret to happiness. And friendship. Because you see, early apexing is the enemy of speed, and thus the enemy of happiness. So let me let you in on a little secret: in autocross, the later the apex, the faster the time. Here’s why: cones should almost always be treated as EXIT cones, which means, you want to be on the gas as you’re passing them into the next element, and you can’t be on the gas unless you have completed your turn. By apexing late, you will be unwinding the car (aka reducing steering input) as you straighten out and roll on the throttle. So how do you do this? Simple: set up wide in the opposite direction of the turn you are about to make. If you need to go left, set up wide right. If you need to go right, set up wide left. Get your braking done BEFORE you approach the cone, make your turn-in nice and late, then get on the gas as you unwind the steering wheel. By apexing late, you can carry more speed into the next element, and have the car set up on the straightest possible line to it. If you’ve got 10 elements on an autocross course and can pick up a tenth at the exit of each element, there’s a second off your lap time, and that can easily be the difference between first and second place. So maybe you know me, maybe you don’t, but I’m being your friend here: do not, under any circumstances, early apex. The weekend at Big Willow started with clear skies and a crisp cold morning as cars were starting their engines and lining up to start the day of racing. As a Time Trial driver, I was feeling exhilarated to be in an environment with every level of experienced racers. This was my fifth race weekend in a spec Boxster and I was so excited to be out on the track again spending the weekend with my Dad, Jim McLoughlin and brother, James. Being a junior at TCU (Texas Christian University) it is hard for me to attend races unless I am home visiting. Our family has two spec Boxster’s, so my Dad sat this weekend out and let my brother and I drive. Our family calendar is planned around attending the POC races every month. When I am home, all my family talks about is the correct racing line, who is attending the event and how much fun it is. Apparently, my brother James is rather quick, so it is fun to see my Dad asking my younger brother for all this racing advice- what the fastest racing line is and how to look at all the data from the car. His advice most of the time is “go faster.” This has been a great experience as a young driver, and I have my great coaches to thank for that. My first race weekend, Anna Predescu coached me and pushed me making great stride in my driving and technical skills. Alan Cravello also coached me during the Button Willow event in March. Now having four different coaches I received great feedback from different perspectives. This is what I love about POC and their willingness to help you. Alan Cravello also was so gracious enough to let me drive his GT4 during the most recent Big Willow event. We went out on the track together for the first couple sessions as he gave me pointers. By the end of the day I was even able to take the GT4 out alone. It was a moment I will never forget. 30


It is always exciting attending POC events to see how well my dad and brother do in their races. At the last Big Willow event, it was so fun cheering on James from the side. Watching him battle between first and second place with Anders Hainer is so thrilling yet nerve-racking. James ended up with two second places and one first place from the orange race group that weekend. From a new driver’s perspective, I have learned that you need to deal and adapt with changes, challenges, frustrations, and victory, just like real life. This sport is meditating and exhausting at the same time. I am concentrating so much on driving and technique, that I am therefore not thinking about anything else like school. POC is not just about racing but is a great family affair with my brother and Dad, and therefore my mom comes along as our biggest cheerleader. The friendships that we have made through the POC community puts a smile on my face and I am glad to be a part of it.

The POC Went Virtual and It’s Here to Stay Wow, what a year it has been. From a global pandemic to a historical election, 2020 will surely be one we will all remember (although we may not want to). I personally was a bit worried when this all started in early March that it was surely going to affect some of our races, especially my favorite, our annual “Tribute to Le Mans!� As part of the winning team in the relay class in 2019, I was really looking forward to going out and trying to make it two in a row! Well, as we all know the pandemic had a bit to say about that. With government restrictions and social distancing requirements it just was not in the cards for us in 2020. This was a very tough thing for all of us on the BOD to decide on considering the importance of this race to the club. The annual tribute race, for decades, has always been a time for our members, their families, and even pro racers to come together as one big family. No points, no prize money, just champagne showers and smiles! With as tough of a year it has been, the POC tried to continue to make things exciting for our members. 37


As most of you know by now, with the help of some great members, we took our racing online! With what was originally going to be a 4-race mini-series leading up to our 2020 “Virtual Tribute to Le Mans” we actually just finished round 16 of season 2 at COTA! With Monday night races live-broadcasted on YouTube every other week, this league has been a huge hit! It has brought members from our Autocross series head-to-head with our racers on the track and afterwards maybe even enjoying an adult beverage (or two) together, virtually. Is it the same as being in a real race car? No. Are the fun factor, the adrenaline, and the smiles there? Hell yes! Plus, it was a great way to keep busy during all this darn time off. Heck, I was even able to win the virtual tribute to keep my streak going! Based on the success of the first two seasons, I am happy to report we will be bringing a season 3 where our members will be given a chance to drive globally! While season 1 featured all of our local tracks, with season 2 we went national and even crossed the border into Canada to run Mosport. What a great experience! It not only added to the overall interest and enjoyment but also exemplified what the POC really is...a big family. I’ve been around the club since I was 12 years old playing in the pits and watching my father race. Over the years I’ve watched the club evolve. With the addition of our new SIM league I am now happy to have been a part of this evolution. I want to thank all of the POC for placing me on the BOD so that I am now able to give back and continue to help the club grow. A big shout out to our 6-year president Ron Palmer who has been a great mentor. Also, a big thank you to all of our POC Sim Racing League sponsors: Porsche, Octavio Tequila, Sunset Mortgage, and Century Financial Consultants. Without you this would have not been possible. Another big thank you goes to Porsche factory driver, Patrick Long, for being a part of our virtual tribute race and giving us a memorable lap tour.
